Throw in Elton Brown from Virgina. Big Guard with a little attitude. I would love to see him in a Texans uniform, to play RG in a year or two.

Just offhand, how about Morency or Fason at RB, Henry, Gibson, or Savoy at WR, Smith at TE, Munoz or Britt at Tackle, Elton Brown at guard, Wilkerson at C, Hawthorone or Tuck on the dline, Lance Mitchell or Daryl Blackstock at LB, or Pool or Shazor at Safety. He can take it to the house at any given point. Do not compare him to DD. He has alot more burst and great open field speed. Thanks. He is a 3rd round pick so i don't need to be too critical of the team. He is 25 now and a "raw" talent. So he should be ready to start when he is say 27 maybe 28. On average, we would get 4 productive years from him. Maybe that Tuck guy the Giants blazed to the podium to get would have been a better choice?

04-23-2005, 08:51 PM
Was one of the top backs in the nation I don't know why he fell.

Negatives: Needs to learn to secure the ball better, as he leaves it exposed enough to cough it up Carries the ball with the wrong hand at times when breaking toward the perimeter While he can reach and pluck for the pass, he prefers to cradle catch the ball Not used much in the passing game, outside of swing routes, as he does not have the natural, easy hands to guide the ball in Has a good feel when running inside, but does not show the speed to consistently reach the outside or the second gear to maintain top speed when he gets into the open Age could be somewhat of an issue (25) While he has good lateral quickness, he is really not a nifty avoid-type of runner Character and background need further review.

Do not compare him to DD.

Heh...true, no comparison. He's slower than DD and according to the profile he's not as good of a receiver out of the backfield. Does apparently have a problem securing the football, says the profile, so at least they have THAT in common. :heh:

Seriously, I actually like the pick. This means Hollings is done by the end of camp, finally, and between the two of these guys Houston can piece together a starting RB for a whole season. And he sounds like a strong guy despite his size. Curious to know how his possible lack of receiving ability will affect Carr--maybe he'll look downfield more often!

DD has a nice burst, but I really think this guy has a burst that is even better then DD, and has much more accelration once free. I am telling you he can run a 4.45 fourty or close to it. What's DD, around 4.6-4.7 range? Doesn't sound like much difference, but it can make all the difference in the world when being chased by fast DB's. Morency is a much better big play threat. He is a threat to take it to the house on any given play. He is a bit raw, but the nice side of that is he is low milage. That's why he is still available now. How many of you Benson bashers didn't want him because he had carried the ball so much? Here you have a guy without much milage, and some of you complain because he doesn't have as much experience. You can't have it both ways. Some of you would complain if we drafted God.

It just strikes me as being kind of odd...I realize DD isn't the sturdiest back, but if we would've gotten a bigger RB to split time with DD, I think we would've had a nice "thunder and lightning" backfield as opposed to a "lightning and lightning" backfield...

Because there are a lot of guys in the third round still who can make our teams as backups and push for the starter's role. We won't get anyone in the 4th who can make our team as a backup unless we hit a homerun like we did with DD, which rarely happens.

Really? I never read a post of yours that detailed that...I would much obliged if you would break it down for me :) ...

Because there are a lot of guys in the third round still who can make our teams as backups and push for the starter's role. We won't get anyone in the 4th who can make our team as a backup unless we hit a homerun like we did with DD, which rarely happens.

Faggins, R.Walker, Earl, Davis were all 4th round or later and are expected to play large roles on the Texans next year... A 4th round pick can certainly provide depth and perhaps more eventually.

Really? I never read a post of yours that detailed that...I would much obliged if you would break it down for me :) ...Here was the last time I said it in March... Keep in history in mind when thinking along these lines. When Dom Capers had a choice between the explosive Tim Biakabutuka, and the big power back Eddie George, he chose the speed guy in Biakabutuka. In addition, we passed on other more powerful backs when we took Dom Davis also. We left power backs such as his running mate LaBrandon Toefield, Jeremi Johnson, and Justin Griffith on the board. All 3 of those backs fit what I commonly see the fans perceiving as the kind of back we would pursue. http://www.houstonprofootball.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=41017&highlight=biakabutka#post41017

Fason is explosive but a straight line runner without much wiggle and is easy to put a helmet on.

Morency. Sweet! I thought he would go in the 2nd round. This is excellent value! He was one of the guys that was on my short list. He has 4.45 speed guys. He can take it to the house at any given point. Do not compare him to DD. He has alot more burst and great open field speed. This guy is our feature back by 2006, and will see the field a bunch this year as well. Very happy camper. :thumbup

most profiles have him closer to 4.67 and around that. many say that some cons are open field speed and his lack of ability to hit a 2nd gear. i think after getting a recking-ball of a nose we should have shifted to beefing up the o-line to protect Carr and open holes for DD. if nothing else we should have gotten a line backer to replace Jaime Sharper.

Jets get Pouha the DT from Utah. It will be tough for anyone to run inside on them with Robertson and Pouha in there. Robertson gets good penetration, and Pouha clogs up the middle. Nice pick.

Makes a lot of sense...I think most people assume Capers wants power backs because of his statement that he wanted our offense to be more like Pittsburgh's...It's easy to misconstrue that as meaning that he wants a runner who will run 4 yards straight ahead every down, but what he really meant was that he wanted a team that had good ball control...Good point, Vinny...

It's true about big backs. I really think Wells bulked up and improved enough last year to be that guy for this team when one's needed. I can't see Capers worrying about getting another big RB.

By the way, PIT picks Trai Essex? Lose a Plaxico, gain a Trai. These names are great. (Like we should talk, with a Vernand now.)

Yeah I know Cheeks doesn't play for them anymore, but we still did get the 7th Rounder for him I believe. I think Cheeks either signed with the Panthers or Giants recently. The Panters signed Tom Rouen, and are likely to dump their "all star" punter Sauerbrun.

The reason most profiles show his in that range is because they are using his combine time, and he had a hammy. Tell me this time next year that Dom Davis is a faster runner than Morency. :heh:

Here are some parts from some profiles on the web. I think they back up my assertion that this guy will eventually be our feature back. Time will tell, but I am juiced about this pick myself.

Morency has feature back potential, he has outstanding explosiveness and speed and his receiving ability will raise his stock as well. If he improves his lower body strength and starts to run better between the tackles, he'll be one of the better backs in the league. He should go sometime in the 2nd Round.
link (http://www.draftshowcase.com/VernandMorency.htm)

Morency has less than 500 carries in his career, which is about 700 less than Cedric Benson of Texas. He has good size and the enough speed to make him a threat to score anytime he touches the football. He became the first OSU running back to rush for more than 200 yards in consecutive games since 1996. He displays good vision, hits the hole hard, and is extremely elusive in the open field.

Giants got Tuck

Now I know how all the Horns fans feel about us passing on Johnson. This Irish fan really wanted us to get Tuck. Guess Cass. and Dom decided we already had enough 'tweener' linebackers. Hopefully we can find someone tomorrow that we can groom to play center.
I hear that Clev. is dissappointed with Faine? Maybe we can arrange to take him off of their hands. :woot

Probably reviewing his gameplan for Day 2 of the draft. Some people may not like his picks, but the guy pours his heart and soul into this team.

gotta question him after todays picks.. I'll take their word on Travis Johnson but it really better work out with him.... I like the Morency pick a very good back, but there were other people we could have used too.. Marion Barber might have been better..

although they threw us a curve ball we did pick 2 decent players and will have an extra pick next year. we basically got 2 solid starters on defense (buchanon and johnson) and another back to compete with DD.

I think the 4th round we look at elton brown, i had him as the number 1 guard cause Baas would move to center. if he is there in the 4th our offensive line will be improved.

Oh no, a running back? ok, now I'm a little worried. True all teams can use a few good running backs, but that was not our weakest point. In fact, we are fairly set at running back. What about left tackle? what about a line backer? what about our D-line? Come on now guys. YEs, we have a very strong secondary, but we can't pressure the pass. We can't protect Carr. What's going on here?!?!?

T-Bolt by any chance? I have a close family member who spent several years in VMFA-251. In fact, I may have 'spoken' to you before but I just don't recognize the handle.

Anyway, the Texans were in a precarious position at RB. DD is a good RB but there's nothing behind him if he goes down. Hollings is not a between the tackles guy and Wells will give you one Raider like game a year among a dizzying array of 2-3 yard carries. I like the Morency pick.

The Texans are in a precarious position at offensive tackle as well. Behind Wand and Wade we have Garrick Jones and <drumroll please> Chad Beasley. Who? Moving Pitts back to tackle if Wand is injured is not an ideal chain of personnel move events I would like to see started.

As far as Travis Johnson, I was surprised like most people but the fact that we just got one of the top rated interior defensive linemen in the draft is a very good thing. That's another unit that desperately needed an infusion of youth.

I guess the front office didnt have LB as a pressing need in the draft this year which makes me think that Peek will be starting opposite Babin. To leave DJ on the board for a 3rd next year and to leave Blackstock on the board when they could have maybe gotten Ciatrick Fason later on makes me even wonder if they may just want LB depth. A lot of comments on here were aimes towards the Texans getting an OLB/DE Tweener. Seems wierd and no WR either.... I guess the jury will be out on these selections :hmmm:

I'm sorry but morrency was the weirdest pick of the day....even more so than tj. He's like 25 already. Character issues....but then again they are tossing around that phrase like salad these days.

We still are pressed at OL, S, ILB.....why are we drafting for DEPTH?

I'm not happy with the draft at all but then again i dont scoutn 365 so we'll see when the season starts.
