And Jerry Jones is talking again

Garrett puts tight leash on Romo down stretch

“When you get in a situation like that, you’ve got to go for the kill,” Jones told Y! Sports shortly before leaving the Cowboys’ locker room. “I felt like we could’ve been more aggressive. Our defense had been good all day, but you knew Brady had a length-of-the-field drive in him – so it didn’t surprise me at all when he took them down at the end.”

If Garrett, who has been a head coach for less than a year, was scared that Romo would blow this game, he made a major miscalculation. By treating his quarterback like an irresponsible teenager lobbying to take the family car on a road trip, Garrett – and not Romo – was the one who gagged under pressure.

That’s because while many critics bash Romo as a second-tier quarterback whose penchant for making brutal mistakes at key moments is an insuperable flaw, Jones still believes the 31-year-old passer possesses greatness. The owner demonstrated his commitment four years ago with a six-year, $67.4 million contract extension through the 2013 season. He reaffirmed that faith on Sunday evening, just two weeks removed from Romo’s miserable second half against the Detroit Lions that resulted in the biggest collapse in franchise history.

“I do have complete confidence in him making throws at the end of a ballgame,” Jones said. “We’ve been burned a couple of times this year, but I still like his chances in those situations.”

That was entirely the Dolphins fault imo. You can't honor Florida's national title season when Tebow comes to town and not expect to have some fans cheer him on. I would have been pissed if Houston honored The Longhorns title season when Vince Young visited.

Johnson's struggles remind Hasselbeck of 2005 MVP Alexander

“I definitely see a lot of similarity in (Johnson and Alexander), in terms of when you’re so successful and produce in such a major way -- with fantasy football and all that stuff -- people are just expecting it to happen,” Hasselbeck said, according to The Tennessean. “There’s a lot that goes into it. It’s hard to be that elite all the time."

"People got on (Alexander) real quick, real easy," he said. "It was a thing where he probably got a little too much credit when things were good and too much blame when things were bad."

You don't burn the Motor City without a fight.

When Gunther Cunningham caught wind of Jared Allen's Thursday rip session on the city of Detroit, the Lions defensive coordinator made one thing clear:

Unlock HQ Video

We don't want you here.

"He's not good enough to live here," Cunningham said Friday of the Vikings defensive end. "This is too tough of a town for him."

In an impressive push to become the least-popular human to ever step foot inside Ford Field on Sunday, Allen told the world: "If I had to live in Detroit, I think I'd just drown myself in the river that was across the way."

Cunningham didn't support that idea, but with the Allen nonsense cleared aside, he continued his frolic down the warpath with strong words for the talking heads critiquing his aggressive defense:

Listen to the 2011 NFL season LIVE -- hear all the action online in premium sound quality with NFL Audio Pass. Sign up now!

"There's some ex-coaches on television, in the media, making statements," Cunningham said. "Why don't they come and talk to me about it? ... Don't tell me how to coach. They were in high school and maybe not even born when I started in this business.http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d824e4682/article/cunningham-detroit-too-tough-of-a-town-for-vikings-allen?module=HP11_headline_stack

Sources told the radio station that players shared their concerns about the play-calling from the outset.

Wow. Denver just benefitted from a call that could have been a NE touchdown. Regardless of the call, this is where the automatic review on TD's rule is a bit unfair. If they call it a TD it is reviewed, since this catch/no-catch, made in the endzone, was ruled a no-catch there is no auto-review. Not right.

NE never challenged and settled for the go-ahead FG. 17-16 Pats.

EDIT: Haha, God just fumbled the ball away.

Every "Tebow" Uttered On ESPN’s "TebowCenter" Today

In what was either a rare act of self-awareness or a complete lack thereof on behalf of the Worldwide Leader, ESPN dedicated an entire hour of SportsCenter today to Tim Tebow, managing to mention the Denver quarterback's name no fewer than 88 times in the process—all of which were painstakingly edited together for your pleasure above.

The tally would have been more than 100, but an Ed Werder segment about "Winning The Tebow Way" was cut from the rundown to make room for the breaking news on Jerry Sandusky's arrest on new charges. ESPN still managed to squeeze in a discussion of Tebow's impact on fantasy football, a Skip Bayless debate, and a Tebow-centric Top Plays. But now that you've gotten your last big fix, ESPN, I think it's time we head to Tebowrehab.

Why the hell does Ryan Leaf still have a publicist

Ex-NFL QB Leaf arrested for 2nd time in Montana

HELENA, Mont. (AP)—Former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf was arrested again Monday, just days after he posted bail on similar charges that he burglarized a home and stole prescription drugs, authorities said.

Leaf was first arrested on Friday after police found oxycodone pills in his golf bag that an acquaintance later said Leaf stole from his home. Then early Monday, three days after posting a $76,000 bond, he was arrested again on accusations that he broke into another home outside Great Falls, Central Montana Drug Task Force Commander Chris Hickman said.

The owners walked into the home Sunday afternoon to find a “tall man with an athletic build” inside, Hickman said. The man told the owners he had the wrong address and left.

The Bills announced Monday that they have signed Dickerson. The club reportedly envisions Dickerson as an “off the line tight end/H-back prospect,” and is listing him as a fullback for the time being.

Cards' coach Ken Whisenhunt has a tendency to not play rookies off the bat, and Floyd apparently came into offseason workouts a bit heavy, according to Somers. We expect Floyd to eventually take over a starting role, but that may not be until late in this season, or even next season. (from Yahoo News)

The NFL re-issued the suspensions to players involved in the bounty scandal, and it has changed from the original ruling. New Orleans Saints LB Jonathan Vilma will be suspended for a full season but will still get game checks from his time on the physically unable to perform list; Cleveland Browns LB Scott Fujita had his suspension reduced from three games to one; New Orleans Saints DE Will Smith will still be suspended three games and free-agent DE Anthony Hargrove had his suspension reduced from eight games to seven. All players will have the opportunity to appeal the suspensions.

The surprising part of the current rosters is that 77 undrafted rookies made teams. Normally, there are about 50

In the cutdown to 53, 201 draft choices made the roster.

With the Bills cutting down to 50 players, they will make several moves today. So will Jax, Oak and maybe KC

The Vikings, Packers and Bengals made the fewest changes to the 53 man roster. They added only 11 new players. The Steelers were next (12))

The Chiefs led the league with 26 changes to their 53-man roster. Arizona was second with 24.

Fourteen teams kept only two QBs but Buffalo and Green Bay, who each kept two, could still be in market for a backup.

The Packers have NO backup on their 53 in that they just released Coleman, and Tolzien (ex 49) was placed on their practice squad. Doubt that Tolzien with no experience in the system (more likely a move made to pump him for the 49er playbook, since the Packers lay the 49ers Week 1) would be brought up from the PS to be Rodgers' BU.

If the Lisfranc is of any substance, a "few" weeks is unlikely to change anything. The Broncos are entertaining putting him on IR designated to return. Even so, as a huge LT, even at a few months treated nonoperatively, pushing off that foot will be a monumental accomplishment, and his risk for re-injury very high once put out there again........and if the Lisfranc with Grade 2 (> or = to 2 mm separation of joint) or more, up to 90% may eventually require surgery. Peyton should be worried........very worried.

Two thoughts about tonight's Chiefs at Eagles game that have little to nothing to do with the actual game.

First, they cut away so we could hear an ESPN International call of one of the touchdowns. The commentator was named Roberto Abramowitz.

Secondly, did anyone watching at halftime sort of half-expect the Philadelphia faithful to boo Donovan McNabb during the jersey number retiring ceremony? Even just a smattering? I did. Glad I didn't hear anything, though.

Two random thoughts......

CBS never finishes their replays (showing a crucial part of the play) and jump around too damned much. By 'jump around' I mean there's a play on the field. Time for a quick in-house commercial for a program on CBS. There's a ply on the field, let's go the the worthless sideline reporter. A play on the field, now let's show a QB comparison brought to you by Budweiser - Grab some Bud's......etc....etc. Fox does it too, actually. Even during baseball games. I miss watching between plays, you can catch very telling things in between plays you might not catch during the play.

Second random thought. That NFL/sports thing where players jump up and hit bodies in mid-air -- gayest thing since Liberace. Always has been, always will be.

I hate hearing that rationalization. There is almost five feet of target below the head and above the knee on Gronk.

i want a head coach that studies the new orleans offensive strategy. they run the same plays everyone does, but they run all of them all the time. what i mean by that is they dont need 3rd and long to run a draw, or try to blitz break with a screen, or run only on early and short downs, or pass on long downs. they do everything at any given time. 2nd and short against a 4 man front? screen. 1st down at mid field? draw. play actions, runs from every formation, passes all over the field ... the defense cant key on any one area because the next play could be anything. that kind of chaos allows them to have big play after big play, instead of playing a more situational style of offense.

I agree with that.

But if I'm the size of T.J. Ward and I've got a guy the size of Gronk coming at me, I'm hitting him low too so I don't get trucked. Nothing to do with fines.

I don't think it was a malicious hit, just an unfortunate result.

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap2000000295541/article/tj-ward-hit-on-patriots-rob-gronkowski-was-legal

"When they set the rule, everyone knew what was going to happen," Ward said, per The Plain Dealer. "This can happen if you have those types of situations. It's pretty much inevitable and they forced our hand with this one.

"I've been fined three times, and I don't like playing for free. If you go ask anybody in this league would they like to play for free? No. Repeat offenders, they're starting to suspend people for the year. I can't risk that. I won't risk that. And, I've got to play within the rules, point blank."

I think that small guys have a tough time getting run over trying to hit big dudes like this in the trunk...just watch Earl run over Isiah Robertson as a guide. I think this injury is at the hands of the overofficious legal department giving smaller players little option than to go low with dangerous hits or take on the possibility of getting embarrassed. Getting embarrassed doesn't pay well...unless you are Keo. Donno how that guy kept his job bouncing off rb's at the goal line

The small guy rationale doesn't work as a criticism for this rule. He was always going to go low for exactly the reason you state. Also, not in the helmet doesn't mean only in the trunk - there is a lot of room between the waist and knee as well. The rule being criticized here is about head hunting which involves being up even higher and and often off your feet losing all leverage.

As an aside, expect Von Miller to get a hefty fine if not a suspension for an unpenalized play yesterday. He launched himself, lowered his crown and went full on into the side of Fitzpatrick's helmet (after the ball was gone) yesterday .

Vinny
12-09-2013, 12:39 PM
I get your point about going low previously, but I think it's not that cut and dry though. They may still have gone low before the added penalties and the fines, but he could have hit Gronk in the shoulder pads but you risk accidentally hitting the helmet, so you just about have to go low instead of it being an option to go low. I heard that this year had more knee injuries than in previous years. I'd like to see some real data on this.

Totally agree with that. Also fully understand it is a fast interaction and you don't always hit what you mean to. People hate no discretion nowadays but I think there should be incidental/unintended discretion given to the refs for something like Reed getting flagged against the Patriots.

One final note on the knee injuries. I think a lot of the players saying they had to go low because of the rules is excuse making after an injury happens. Watching the plays they never had an option to go high. They weren't avoiding a head hit, they were too far away and diving to make any tackle at all. Matt Stevens didn't choose to take Ricky Williams' shoe off - it was all he could get.

Seahawks shutout costs car dealer $420,000 (http://www.komonews.com/sports/Seahawks-shutout-costs-car-dealer-420000-235958391.html)FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - When the Seahawks win, you win!"

Pizza, beef jerky, cheeseburgers, haircuts, Slurpees and donuts.

Those are just a few of the free promotional gifts the gods of football can grant lucky fans when the Seahawks dominate.

Add a cool $35,000 to that list.

The Seahawks clobbered the New York Giants 23-0 in MetLife Stadium Sunday afternoon. Most of Washington likely cheered and chanted "SEA--HAWKS" after each of the game's five interceptions. But Jet Chevrolet in Federal Way is now obligated to pay out $35,000 to twelve contestant winners as part of a "Seattle shutout" promotion.
Under the rules, anyone was allowed a free entry to the contest by filling out a form, but if someone bought a new or used car at Jet they were given 100 entries. Per the rules, each winner will get $35,000 for a total payout of $420,000.

Sunday's was only the 4th worst...

Tony Romo's 10 most heartbreaking losses (http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap2000000299491/article/tony-romos-10-most-heartbreaking-losses)
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones called Sunday's insane loss to the Green Bay Packers one of the "hardest losses that I've experienced."

He has plenty of options to choose from. The Jason Garrett-Tony Romo era has produced a string of ridiculous losses, each one seemingly more excruciating than the one before. The Cowboys don't just blow big leads; they blow 23-point leads to Matt Flynn on five successive touchdown drives, with two Tony Romo interceptions in the final four minutes mixed in.

Sunday's meltdown got us thinking about where this game would rank on the list of the most heartbreaking losses of Romo's career. Here are ten that come to mind, with a lot of help from our video department...
