ESPN's Chris Mortensen says that Patriots LB Brandon Spikes wasn't placed on the injured reserve just because of his knee. He reports that Spikes was late to team meetings on Friday, during the bye week, and that was the final straw for the coaches and front office. Apparently Mort also reported that this wasn't the first incident for Spikes this season. The Patriots placed him on the injured reserve instead of releasing him.

So Felando pulled off the shoes he was wearing, a pair of flip-flops bearing the Chargers logo. Offering them to the [homeless] man, he said he was sorry they weren’t sturdier footwear and he hoped they would be better than nothing.

“That’d be great,” the fellow said, taking the beach shoes in his hands.

Then his head jerked a little. He said, “Are these Chargers flip-flops?”

Felando nodded and noted that though he moved away from San Diego years and years ago he’s still a fan.

With that, the wanderer handed him back the flip-flips. “I’m good,” he said. And he walked off in his stocking feet.

The fellow blended into the darkness as Felando stood open-mouthed and thinking, “Wow, a new low as a Chargers fan!”

Miami is in a similar situation to us in that they need OL revamp and help at pass rushing positions as well as ILB. What they have over us Ryan Tannehill, which means they're set at QB, they just need to put pieces around him.

Harbaugh saga promises to dominate 49ers' season (http://www.sfgate.com/49ers/article/Harbaugh-saga-promises-to-dominate-49ers-season-5281408.php)
...the friction has gotten worse. And given the events of the past week, it's become public. So there's no pretending that everything is fine.

And from what I've been told, the tension isn't just upstairs in the building. One source with inside knowledge of the team says that Harbaugh's act has worn thin in the locker room, particularly among some key "face of the 49ers" type players. While the team is winning, that's not a problem. But a few losses could expose a widening rift.

The issue isn't how to make the 49ers' brass more cohesive. Plenty of organizations operate amid chaos and hard feelings. As a 49ers source told me, "If Jim and Trent have a beer together, it's not going to make Kap throw the ball 4 inches higher," referring to the final play of the NFC Championship Game...

Yep.

Chron's new Texans beat writer Brian T. Smith confirmed again (on Buffalo radio station) what McClain has quietly admitted but never put onto paper that "they" have zero special knowledge about what's going on at 2 Reliant Park and that any reports of leaks from within the organization... like by "a scout"... are complete b.s.

OB is running a tight ship. Anyone who violates confidentiality will be fired.

For the most part McClain only comes out of his cave to pump Johnny Manziel. Manziel and his people regularly call "prime" media members. He and Gil Brandt speak as much as every other day. It's a new normal -- powerless media/powerful media machines/muddy waters.

I remember he was diagnosed with CTE by a Dr. with questionable reputation some time ago (strange since diagnosis can't be made in vivo), and treated successfully for his symptoms of chronic headache and insomnia by him. But chronic headaches and insomnia are the symptoms of "simple" post concussion syndrome, and have been successfully treated as such. Patients treated for potential CTE symptoms (with later confirmed postmortem diagnosis) have not shown successful treatments thus far.

The CFL is seriously considering allowing pass interference calls to be reviewed and non-calls to be reviewed for a possible penalty. Seeing that not uncommonly some of these instances have changed the end results of games in the NFL, it would be nice to see this change being affected by our own League.

Now I do not think preseason games should cost as much as regular season games... no way. Not even close to the same quality of play.

And the current playoff set up is just fine too. The more teams that are allowed into the tourney the more it starts to feel like "everybody gets a trophy". But that's probably just me.

I don't agree with either.

The problem I have with both QBs is that they haven't played a lot. If they can handle the mental aspects of the game, & they both appear to have it upstairs, then the only real learning they can do is on the field.

I don't mean to start them right away, or even at all in 2014. But if they're in a blow out, throw them out there for a series, working your way up to a qtr, or even a half after you're out of play off contention.

I don't see how anyone can say, "1 year minimum" for any QB, any player. There has to be tangible milestones. I want to see how he makes this decision, that decision... how he handles this situation, that situation. I want to see him improve in how he does this, how he does that.

A lot of this, the coaches can see in practice. But when he's ready, he's ready. There's only so much learning you can do on the sideline. He can come up with all the right answers, but sooner or later, you have to put him in real situations to get real progress.

The bolded is the key.

There needs to be a schedule with milestones and metrics. Some guys might be ready in half a season, some guys might not be ready in two seasons.

But the only significant testing ground is in game. I've heard vet after vet say again and again, "there ain't nothing like game speed".

The true pass/fail tests have to be in real, meaningful games. And the kid has to earn the right to get into meaningful games by shining in practice.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday that Kaepernick and the San Francisco 49ers have signed a six-year extension through 2020, according to a source close to the situation. Kaepernick will earn up to $126 million, with $61 million guaranteed, per Rapoport. Kaepernick was entering the final year of his rookie contract, which was set to pay him under $1 million. The deal was completed in only one day of negotiations, and the team later announced the deal.

Florio explains Kap's contract. Amazing what an creative organization can do to be able to keep signing players and accomplish good things.....and still avoid cap Hell.

Kaepernick’s deal helps sign other guys in one way: It doesn’t pay market value
Posted by Mike Florio on June 5, 2014, 10:07 AM EDT
Kaepernick

After signing, with an old-old-school quill pen, his new contract, 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick explained to the media that he agreed to the deal as designed in order to help the team sign and keep other players.

“Part of the way the contract is written and the way it was negotiated was so they would be able to sign other players,” Kaepernick said. “That was something that my agents and the organization worked out and they felt like this was something they would be able to get other players with.”

So how does the deal accomplish that objective? Based on the full numbers we obtained late Wednesday night, Kaepernick’s paltry (relative to other franchise quarterbacks) signing bonus of $12.328 million results in only $2.05 million per year in cap space through 2019 being devoted to the up front payment. Coupled with his base salary of $645,000 and workout bonus of $100,000, Kaepernick’s cap number for 2014 stands at a very manageable $2.795 million.

Next year, when his salary moves to $12.4 million with a $2 million per-game roster bonus and a $400,000 workout bonus, the cap number spikes to $16.85 million. Which is roughly what his cap number would have been if the team had used the franchise tag on Kaepernick next year. Of that amount, $2 million goes away if Kaepernick doesn’t take at least 80 percent of the snaps or if he fails to lead the team to the Super Bowl or to be named first-team or second-team AP All-Pro. So the cap number could be as low as $14.85 million.

For 2016, the salary moves to $13.9 million with another $2 million in per-game roster bonuses and $400,000 workout bonus. That’s a cap number of $18.35 million, which will drop to $16.35 million if he doesn’t take at least 80 percent of the snaps or if he fails to lead the team to the Super Bowl or to be named first-team or second-team AP All-Pro in 2014 and 2015.

The cap numbers, subject to the annual $2 million de-escalator, for the rest of the deal are $20.95 million in 2017, $21.45 million in 2018, $23.25 million in 2019, and $23.4 million in 2020.

The deal allows cap space to be created in any given year via a restructuring that converts base salary to bonus money. However, that reality applies in all long-term, big-money deals. There’s nothing unique to the structure of the Kaepernick deal that makes it any easier to sign other players — other than the fact that the contract represents less than the current market value for franchise quarterbacks.

Over time, Kaepernick’s contract will reflect less and less of the current market value for franchise quarterbacks. If the top of the market was a true $20 million per year when the cap was $123 million per team, what will the top of the market become when the cap spikes above $140 million in 2015? By 2016, it could surpass $160 million. If the top quarterbacks received 16.26 percent of the available cap when the per-team limit was $123 million, the top of the market will be $26 million by the time the cap moves to $160 million.

Kaepernick, with a deal that pays out $13 million in 2014, as much as $14.8 million but as little as $10.4 million in 2015, as much as $16.3 million but as little as $11.9 million in 2016, as much as $18.9 million but as little as $14.5 million in 2017, as much as $19.4 million but as little as $15 million in 2018, as much as $21.2 million but as little as $16.8 million in 2019, and as much as $23.4 million but as little as $19 million in 2020, quickly will find himself well below the going rate for true franchise quarterbacks — no matter how well he plays as he adds to a career that consists for now of only 23 regular-season starts but several memorable postseason performances.

Pete Carroll on Jim Harbaugh: Great coach, we love beating him

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/06/05/pete-carroll-on-jim-harbaugh-great-coach-we-love-beating-him/#comments

The rivalry between the Seahawks and 49ers extends to their coaches. In fact, it begins with their coaches.

Although most football coaches are tight-lipped types who say nothing more about their rival coaches than that they share mutual respect, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll and 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh have always had a barely concealed contempt for each other. They didn’t like each other when Carroll coached USC and Harbaugh coached Stanford, and they don’t like each other now, either.

The latest salvo comes from Carroll, who, according to the Seattle Times, said at an event for Seahawks fans that Harbaugh is “a great coach and we love beating him.”

I expect some Texans interest if Flowers will play for incentive laden(cheap) contract...

Chiefs release cornerback Brandon Flowers (http://www.kansascity.com/sports/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/article547173/Chiefs-release-cornerback-Brandon-Flowers.html)
Flowers, 28, made the Pro Bowl last season, when he had 68 tackles and an interception. But Dorsey prefers bigger corners, and prior to his release, Flowers, who is 5 feet 9, was one of only three of the 11 cornerbacks on the roster shorter than 6 feet.

He also wasn’t a great fit in new defensive coordinator Bob Sutton’s scheme, which relies a great deal on press-man coverage, and Flowers struggled both outside and inside. He had a Pro Football Focus grade of minus-5.9, which was his worst since 2008.

But even after a rough 2013 season, his coverage grade of 35.5 ranks the fifth-highest of any cornerback over the last five seasons.

He also played through a knee injury last year and showed improvement toward the end of the season, when he had an interception as a nickel corner in the Chiefs’ playoff loss to Indianapolis....

Greg Hardy found guilty of assaulting girlfriend

Carolina Panthers v San Diego Chargers Getty Images

Greg Hardy didn’t get a contract today, but he did get a conviction.

According Bill Voth of Black and Blue Review, Hardy was found guilty on both counts of assault on a female and communicating threats.

Judge Becky Thorne Tin sided with the testimony provided by Hardy’s accuser during the 10-hour trial, even though Nicole Holder admitted cocaine use the night of the incident.

He was given a 60-day suspended sentence, and 18 months of probation. He’ll appeal to get to a jury trial.

The Panthers defensive end will be subject to punishment from the league under the personal conduct policy.

The Panthers used the franchise tag on him, and are hooked to his $13.1 million salary. But they obviously weren’t working on a long-term extension prior to today’s deadline, since agent Drew Rosenhaus sat with Hardy throughout the day’s proceedings.

Didn't Kosar have some problems with alcohol in the past and fairly recently? He came in drunk to do his commentary on several occasions. And I can't remember if it was him, but didn't he hand a policeman a credit card instead of his license when he was stopped for DUI last year?

Yeah I've read that he was "drunk", but not sure that's all it is.
New book "Blood Sport" alleges Bernie Kosar's slurred speech resulted from painkillers Browns gave him -- Bill Livingston (http://www.cleveland.com/livingston/index.ssf/2014/07/new_book_blood_sport_says_bern.html)
Among them was Kosar. "After a twelve-season pro career," say the authors in a sad summary of the Browns' legend, "Kosar has stumbled through a sometimes-incoherent retirement, marred by batty behavior, bankruptcy and drunk-driving arrests."

Bosch's records indicate that Kosar was a patient and that at least one shipment of drugs was made, for which Kosar paid $600.

The authors paraphrase Cortes' view this way: "Compared to the highly addictive painkillers that NFL teams shovel at players, Cortes says Bosch's treatments were a healthier alternative."

In a direct quote, Cortes said, "We can either do this or get back on the oxy. You read the papers about Kosar, and he's a mess. He's slurring his words from the medication, from the oxy that the Browns gave him."

Withdrawal from oxycodone is considered one of the most painful ordeals a drug addict faces, with body aches much worse than the flu and a sensation of pins and needles stabbing his muscles...

Colts get hit again. Looks like G Donald Thomas has re-torn his quad tendon, an injury that cost him the season last year. Last year he underwent surgery for a quad tendon rupture. These latest reports call his recent injury a "torn quad," not distinguishing between muscle vs. tendon. However, tendon is most likely. Any player that has torn his quad tendon is expected to typically lose anywhere from 25-65% muscle strength, even after full rehab. Back-to-back tendon tears to the same quad tendon could very well spell the end of Thomas' career.

8yrs, $97.6MM extension, so he's got 10 more years with them.

OVER THE CAP (http://www.overthecap.com/cap.php?Name=Tyron%20Smith&Position=LT&Team=Cowboys)

Smith, who had two years remaining on his rookie contract, received a $10 million signing bonus. His 2014 and 2015 salaries are fully guaranteed to bring the full guarantee of the contract to $22.118 million. Smith's 2016 salary can also become fully guaranteed. $500,000 in yearly salary is tied to participation in workouts.

Yearly salaries of the contract are
$10,000,000(2016), $10,000,000(2017), $10,000,000(2018), $10,000,000(2019), $10,000,000(2020), $10,500,000(2021), $13,500,000(2022), and $13,600,000(2023).

Given his age and quality, sounds like a pretty good deal for the Cowboys. Not sure what happens if he gets hurt in the next couple of years.

Aaron Rodgers: Refs will boost passing offenses this year
Posted by Michael David Smith on August 3, 2014, 6:21 AM EDT

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers expects passing offenses around the NFL to be even more productive this season than they were last season, thanks to a stricter emphasis on illegal contact, pass interference and defensive holding.

Rodgers said after officials worked a Packers practice that the way the officials are calling those penalties this year, it can only help quarterbacks and wide receivers.

“I think you’re going to see the passing game reffed a little more tightly this year,” Rodgers said.

The best pass defense in the NFL last year was in Seattle, where opposing teams often complained that the Seahawks’ defensive backs got away with grabbing and holding receivers. Rodgers said he hopes penalties are called just as strictly in the Packers’ season opener at Seattle as they were when officials visited the Packers’ practice.

“I was joking with this crew that we might want them to head up to the Pacific Northwest in about a month,” Rodgers said.

If the NFL is serious about its officials getting strict with defensive backs, that will be bad news for teams like the Seahawks with physical pass defenses, and good news for teams like the Packers who rely on their passing offenses.

I don't know. I thought Seattle was over the line last year even though I wanted them to win. The bigger issue to me is consistency. The rules stay the same regardless of the teams and throughout the game. Seattle would take a couple calls because they gambled the refs wouldn't keep throwing flags slowing the game and pissing off the fans and the refs complied. Then somewhere else on Sunday another team is playing and gets a ticky tack call at a crucial time like they had to meet a minimum quota. Pick the rule and enforce it whether that means 20 flags or 0.

Agreed. The problem will be consistency from crew to crew. Whatever is a flag in the eyes of Jerome Booger's crew ought to be a flag in Hochuli's crew and every crew around the league; no matter the teams, no matter the high profile QB. But we all know all games aren't called equally and therein lies the problem.

I've seen a lot of "hands to the face" penalties called on the OL's through the 1st week of preseason and at least one tonight (JAX-CHI). They're saying it's a point of emphasis for this year. It's not a new rule, but I'm guessing it's an attempt to at least appear as if the league is trying to limit the advantage the offense has due to the changes in the rules regarding secondary. This might lead to a few more sacks for DL's, but more than anything it will lead to more penalties and longer games. A part of me knows that safety is important, the game is changing and will never be what it once was. But the other part of me just misses the way football used to be and wished they'd let they knock the $hit out of each other.

If this was something g negotiated by the players union I wonder why the players went along with it... unless one of them ratted him out that is.

It must be hard for players to reconcile the conflict of being a "player" and a "team member" considering that these two entities are on opposite sides of NFL labor issues.

James Harrison @jharrison9292
I have made the difficult decision to retire as of today. My love for my family and the need to be there for them outweighs my desire to play the game. I have missed too many experiences with them because I devoted SO much time to my career. My love for the game isn't strong enough to make up for missing one more birthday or first day of school. I am retiring as a man who is truly grateful for all of his blessings. I am sincerely thankful to the people who have supported me over the years, first and foremost my family, the Rooney family and my Steeler family, also Mr. Brown, the Bengals organization and fans, and last but FAR from least, Steeler Nation. Thank you.

Sounded phony to me too. I could see it being genuine if he were to retire day 5 years ago when he was still good. Either way guy did a lot as an unheralded player. I'm sure his eye sockets' retirement statement would have read like this

'I am just glad we never have to get out face broken Duane brown.'

Even if it wasn't, why not make the money?

If I were JJ, another reason I would have signed SAM (apart from being a decent prospect & the market he opens... actually I'm pretty sure the Cowboys have always been in that market) is that he'll take quite a bit of attention off Tony Romo. He's scrutinized way too much.

This should help Romo focus more on his craft than the media.

Or they could just have one of the worst defensive rosters EVER and a desperate for talent on that side of the ball.

From Grantland.com: This, impossibly, is who the Cowboys are likely to start in their base defense against the 49ers in Week 1:

DE George Selvie
DT Nick Hayden
DT Henry Melton
DE Jeremy Mincey
LB Bruce Carter
LB Rolando McClain
LB Justin Durant
CB Brandon Carr
CB Morris Claiborne
S Barry Church
S J.J. Wilcox

I see maybe 3 NFL quality players in that list.

**WARNING: MATH**

Are divisional games statistically closer?

The short answer: Depends on your definition of "closer".

The following stats are from the 2012 and 2013 regular seasons combined, according to Pro Football Reference. All ties were included (2 in-division, 0 other).

In division games (192 total):
Average difference: 10.85 points/game
Games decided by <= 3 points: 39 (20.31%)
Games decided by <= 7 points: 94 (48.96%)
Games decided by <= 14 points: 143 (74.48%)

Out-of-division games (320 total):
Average difference: 12.24 points/game
Games decided by <= 3 points: 83 (25.94%)
Games decided by <= 7 points: 149 (46.56%)
Games decided by <= 14 points: 207 (64.68%)

More 3-point-or-fewer games happened in out-of-division games, but they also had 10% more blowouts.

The percentages would make more sense - to me anyway - if you split the point differential thusly:
0-3
4-7
8-14
15 or greater

I'm too lazy right now to do it myself
