I think he could be a quality veteran backup for the Texans defense. He is very familiar with Wade's system and he can still play at a serviceable level.

I say sign him if we can. Do we have the cap space to make him a decent offer?

With all the cuts coming up, I'm not sure what we've got anymore.

With all the cuts coming up, I'm not sure what we've got anymore.Maybe he'll be overwhelmed with all of our potential and a burning desire to play for Phillips and will sign for the league minimum. :dancer:

This is probably the biggest reason for moving Mario to OLB. The only thing that makes sense, I think.

We drafted JJ Watt....... he's a 5 tech. It would have made sense to put Mario at the other DE spot. But if Wade was sure the Cowboys would be letting Igor go (a guy Wade drafted)........ he might have been hedging his bets in the event the Texans took him.

I personally like the move (if we get him) Watt, Smith, Olshansky, Jamison... that's a stout defensive line rotation right there.

He's being cut from the Cowboy's D...... I don't anyone is going to be thinking of him as a lock at starter, unless they were familiar with him from the Chargers D a while back.

I don't know about league minimum, but he'll be competing for a starting spot where ever he goes. & with a first round pick on one end & Antonio making the most of his opportunities so far, chances of Igor winning a starting role here is slim.

If there is a team out there that is going to let him walk on as a starter (SF (maybe are they still trying the 3-4) Buffalo (??)) let them have him.

We'll see Mario move to DE more often than what we thought.

The biggest reason to move Mario was the chance that Olshansky would be cut and the Texans would sign him? You can't be serious.

So you don't think the Texans will sign Olshansky? Are two people posting on the same account?

I would think we'd make him a decent offer if we have the cap space. With the way DL's are rotated, being a "starter" doesn't necessarily mean most of the playing time at a certain position.

So in a nutshell, Wade moved Mario to LB in order to make room for someone we won't sign, and most likely won't start if we do.

I am going to bother, because I can't let this type of illogic go unchecked.

So you are going to move your highest paid player on the basis of waiting for another team to cut a player who is not good enough to start for a defense that was worse than your in 2010?

OK.

RE-SET.

I don't think Olshansky is going to be looking for a starting spot. Here in Dallas, he's not seen as that good a player anymore. He's on the downside of his career but he's still OK.

I'm pretty sure he's an upgrade over Bulman, though, and I think he'd improve our rotation and be a nice backup.

Cut Slaton and use his 1.2 or whatever million to sign Igor. I can only assume Igor is better than our #4 DE.

Depends on who you believe - Rotoworld has him at the $1.2 Million posted earlier.

http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/4651/steve-slaton

Edit: Actually it doesn't depend on who you believe, it depends on who's right. What is indeniable is that if one source is reporting Slaton's 2012 base salary at $550K and another at $1.2 Million, at least one of them is incorrect.

I think Wade's would have saw him as a starter when he made the decision to move Mario to OLB.

But I believe Antonio Smith has changed Wade's mind about his need at DE.

Had Antonio Smith not had the camp that he has had, I think it would be a lock for us to sign Igor & start him.

So, the day after the draft, my thought is Wade was thinking Watt, Cody, Igor

Now that we've had training camp & he's had a chance to see Igor may not be an upgrade over Antonio at all, the importance of signing Igor has dropped. He'd still make an excellent addition to our rotation, but if Igor insists on starting, he's going to have to go somewhere else.

I'm not saying he won't start here, just that it isn't cut & dried. He won't take Watt's spot, so he'll be competing with Antonio who has so far shown he deserves the start.

DL gets rotated more than any other position. Starting is just an ego thing. I would think that winning would be more important than starting. There's a much better chance of that in Houston or San Diego than in SF or Buffalo. I just see many more plusses for him, as a player, to come here than anywhere else. He knows the system inside out and knows the DC inside out.

Nothing for to me actually respond to. All based on speculation about what Wade had his head and said nothing publically about. I can't debate on things that are not provable.

What I can prove is that after JJ Watt was drafted that's when Mario to OLB talk ensued and was excuted. That's what happened.

I think I'd be surprised if Wade jumps at him.

Seems like he was a disappointment last year in Wade's scheme.

From a coaches stand point yes... But Igor is on the down hill side of his career, he'll most likely chase the money. I doubt he sees Houston or the Chargers as Super Bowl contenders.

Of course it's speculation. All of this is speculation. My post was describing my logic...... if it still doesn't make sense to you, c'est la vie

I dont know about that , Jamison had a hell of a camp and Bulman was all over the place making plays.

Maybe they didn't want to tip their hand in the draft.

Announce Mario is going to olb and teams know you are targeting a de. Say he is going to be a de and folks assume you are targeting olb.

Maybe things worked out how they wanted?

Just remember up until this point, the 51 highest paid players on the team had to be under the cap. Now that the cuts have been made, all 53 of your players have to be under crap. Just something to remember.

I know the pre-draft stuff is a great game of liar's poker, but I'm not sure how much of it matters. If a team needs/wants a certain player what I would hope the primary concern is getting our guy, not stopping the Texans from getting their guy.

On Mario, we talked about great deal on this board about at his current size/playing style that Mario is not really a true fit at either 3-4 end or OLB. The best answer as to why he went to OLB was getting he and Watt on the field. If the Texans love Aldon Smith a bunch rumors were true and that was the guy, would Mario be a starting end? I don't know and will let others do the guess work on that.

Not to mention those on IR, and while I'm not positive, I think the practice squad salaries will count against the cap when the Texans start adding those later today.

I'm not saying you're wrong, just throwing other possibilities out there. I have no idea what went on with their draft board.

But as far as the draft goes, I think that a team uses smoke and mirrors to keep teams from jumping up ahead of them.

Fair points...Guess we have to get back to if Igor is going to show up in a Texans' uniform.

No thanks to Olshansky. I think Bulman is better anyway. Watch some Cowgirls stuff on youtube, pick him out (it's easy, he's pretty big) and see how he barely reacts at all until the play is good and under way. I said before and I'll say it here too, the only way I'm taking Olshansky is if he's gained 30 pounds and will play the "bigfatguy" role in the middle. I'm serious it's like he doesn't know the play started ever....
