View Full Version : Jean making an impact at Texans camp

Lestar Jean is continuing to impress at Texans training camp.

Jean, an undrafted free agent wide receiver from Florida Atlantic, was signed by the Texans on July 26. He's caught the eyes of fans during public practices and more importantly he's caught the attention of his head coach.

“(Jean is) continuing to (make plays)," said Texans head coach Gary Kubiak after practice this morning. "He’s a big body kid and I’ve had some of the DBs come over to me and say ‘Hey coach, that guy is tough to handle.’ So, he’s got a lot of ability, he’s got that big body, y’all saw that catch he made this morning so there’s going to be two young receivers on this team so it’ll be interesting to see who they are.”

I didn't see the catch that Jean made this morning but I saw one that he made at practice six days ago that earned him "catch of the day" in a previous camp report.

So if you're among those who think pre-season games are meaningless, think again. They mean everything to young players trying to make a NFL roster.

Aside from Jean, Dickerson and Townsel have had strong camps. Maehl has been impressive in the 'David Anderson role.' Toliver hasn't hit his stride yet, and Townsel is the only one in the group that returns kicks.

Dickerson is built like a linebacker and runs like a receiver. Toliver is tall and lean. Townsel and Maehl are smaller guys, so roles will likely play a factor when Kubiak makes his final selections. Kubiak expects his WR4 and WR5 to play special teams - kick coverage teams if not returns.

Last but not least, I'm sorry Trindon Holliday fans, but Holliday is the longest of long shots to make the Texans 53-man roster.

I agree i have never looked forward to pre season games, honestly never really cared if i saw any BUt i will be watching all of this season. We have so much talent at some positions that i want to see what they can do, especially at WR.

i would say toliver, but who knows. i like D.D and would like to see him move up and consistently get starting PT in the regular season, i think its to close to call on which other WR will make the squad, thats what pre seasons for ;)

From what I've heard, Toliver is out.

At this point, I think it's DD, Jean, and either Maehl or Tounsel with the edge going to Tounsel.

Yes, I think we're going heavy at WR this year.

It's gonna be iffy sneaking a couple of these guys through waivers to the PS.

Well, I'd bank on Jean making the 53-man.

I think Toliver is fighting him for that spot. I think Kubiak retains Maehl (sp?) as the little slot guy in the David Anderson role who plays ST, as well.

Andre Johnson, Jacoby Jones, Kevin Walter, Dorin Dickerson, Lestar Jean, and Maehl (sp?). 7 WRs. What have we carried in the past?

TEs: OD, Dreesen, Graham, and James Casey occupies a roster spot for FB or HB/FB and can be a TE if needed. Sound right? I don't see Hill making the roster because of injury issues. We can't hang onto a TE just because he blocks well in the passing game, IMO.

The Texans took five wide receivers into Week 1 last season and there's no reason to believe they'll take more than five this season. (http://www.examiner.com/houston-texans-in-houston/houston-texans-roster-checkup-training-camp-edition-1)

Really? I thought he was playing well in camp and catching everything thrown his way. Was hoping Toliver would make the team, because I wouldn't want another team picking him up. He has talent. Rather have him on the team than Maehl.

Granted, AJ's twice as good as most WR's, but I think he still only counts as one - meaning you've listed six! Six Wide Receivers Ah-ah-ah!

yeah 2 plus Casey if needed will work. Just pray O.D stays healthy but if he goes down i have full confidence in Dressen, he has been a solid contributor in our passing game.

Wr cuts are going to be interesting.

I think that it will come down to how they play in the pre season. From what I'm hearing townsel is the real deal, so at this point I think he makes it. After that, I think Jean probably has the upper hand.

I'm starting to wonder if Dickerson is a shoe in. I heard kubiak say that he knows who his top three are and everyone else is battling to make the team.

Gun held to my pinky toe and I have to pick I'm going with 6 wr's with Dickerson, Jean, and townsel making the cut.

Graham may be the kind of guy who ends up with some seemingly minor/mysterious injury and lands on IR for the year. Any of the UDFA WR's could be in the same boat.

Unfortunately (or maybe not depending on who), the wild-card in all this (both WR & TE's) could be injuries.

Yeah, whoops!

A report said something about a guy battling another for that 5th WR spot.

I could see us keeping 6, maybe even 7.

1. AJ
2. JJ
3. KW
4. DD
5. Jean
6. Maehl
7. Toliver or Townsel

If only 5, then Jean makes the 5th WR spot.

If 6, then it's Jean in the 5th spot and a fight between Maehl/Toliver/Townsel for the 6th spot.

Any injuries in preseason games or remainder of camp can impact this.

This is basically what I'm saying. We went 5 last year but Kubiak was saying that they were considering going 6 because 1 guy was flashing on ST. But then, iirc, he got hurt.

I think we go 1-6 like you've got it there: AJ, KW, JJ, DD, Jean, Maehl. And then we try to sneak Townsel and Toliver onto the PS.

The only iffy part comes from ST. I know DD plays ST. He did last year. It's Maehl's contribution on ST that's questionable. And since Townsel DOES play ST, that's the fight to watch.

I thought I read somewhere that he WASN'T playing that well, that he was dropping balls. I think it was in one of AJ's reports. Could have been somewhere else.

That's why I've dropped him down in my mental depth chart.

Over in the training camp thread, I posted a revised depth chart based on something Obsiwan posted about Kubiak saying he has 5 WR spots open....

Here was my revision, based on that info:

Wow, obsi.

So Kubiak is saying AJ at 1, JJ and KW at 2 and 3 (regardless of "order").

And that leaves Dorin Dickerson who just has GOT to be at spot 4.

Meaning one last spot for either Jean, Toliver, Townsel, or Maehl.

Yikes.

Jean at spot 5, and maybe Townsel on Special Teams returning kicks?

I just find it hard to let Townsel go, and almost feel the same about Toliver.

Very tough competition going at WR position. I want keep all of them. Put some WR on PS.

I really liked Lester Jean in college, he was always a playmaker. I made a point for people not to underestimate him in the UDFA thread when we signed him.

I think he will make the team based on what I have read in camp reports.

I agree with your first statement, all in.

To the bolded and I'm not trying to be facetious here. I recall alot of folks leaning to drafting another JJ in the 1st if he was still there. We all know how that went. Would it be cautiously safe to think that Rick Smith has grown somewhat as a talent evaluator/getter? Seems like we're going to have to cut a couple of WRs that are capable of playing on Sunday, or is that too optomistic?

Also, there have been a few good reports about Bryan Braman, the UDFA ILB. Kubiak chewed him out last week for fighting but I've heard that name talked positively on several other occasions.

I'm like a few other folks, I'm looking forward to PS.

Sounds like a sickness. :D

I think that Smith has grown over the years but I think a huge part of his talent evaluation has to do with the coaches and the position coaches. His first draft was rough.

I think some of the more questionable picks (like KJ and all the DBs over the years) came from bad input from the positional coaches about what they wanted in a DB. And also they've taken several "project" picks that have taken some time and may or may not develop (Barwin, Jones, Dickerson).

It's easy to forget that Smith did pick a Rookie of the Year. He also went out and made sure to get both Arian Foster and Jeremiah Johnson as UDFAs that year. And this year -- I can't argue with anything he's done this year.

And this WR crop? And the ILBs, which I've been really worried about, actually might turn out OK with Dobbins, Braman, and Sharpton having a battle to make the 53 behind Demeco and Cush.

THIS ^^^^^

Teams want to retain their own cuts. Why go after another team's cut WRs when it could end up not being a good fit? By bringing back your own guys, and refusing the temptation to go after other teams' cuts, you bring back guys who (a) know your system, (b) know your coaches and what they expect of said player, (c) know the playcall system, (d) made bonds with other teammates, and (e) pose a lesser risk overall than acquiring some foreigner who might fit and might end up costing you a spot on the PS that could have gone to one of your own guys.

It's not a 100% guarantee, but still--Most teams cut and PS-assign their own guys out of familiarity and ease of transition.

You might get a rogue team or two trying to grab a guy from the waiver wire that fits a need they had a deficiency in, but most times a team is retaining the position guys they feel they need for depth in case of injuries at that position.

Therefore, I think it's possible for this to happen:

1. AJ'
2. KW
3. JJ
4. DD
5. Jean

Townsel kept on active 53-man roster as a ST guy and 6th WR, if needed due to injuries to one or two guys on the WR squad.

Toliver and Maehl to the PS after clearing waivers.

The wild card is Maehl and if Kubiak has a thing for small guys (slants and curls). He might get sentimental and want Maehl to learn the String Dance.

it's possible to fit 6 wrs, keep both fbs and maybe even 4 rb's (though it's more likely that somebody gets cut and they go with 3) but someone has to play special teams to take the weight off of backup LBers/DBs.

Rey

I wish we didn't have to keep a damn long snapper.

On another note, I could see them only carrying two qb's. I think Yates would make it to the practice squad. I couldn't see a team picking him up and putting him on their active roster.

That's also a factor with other players that we may want to get onto the practice squad. When teams pick them up they have to put then onto their 53. If I'm a coach unless I'm extremely weak at a position I'd rather go to battle with the guys who already know my system.

All that said, I expect toliver to come up with some mysterious injury and be placed on ir. I can see that happening with a couple other players as well.

On the lower end of the roster, do we go best player available or positional need to round out the numbers?

That's really the question. There are several ways to approach this.

DD gets points because he's been playing well and it sounds like he's improved as a WR. He was also drafted instead of FA, which might count for something. AND he plays ST as a gunner and on kick offs.

Maehl gets a vote because he becomes that DA slot guy, hopefully an upgraded version of that. But I don't think he contributes to ST unless he starts returning.

Townsel has the special teams behind him. But I've only heard of him as a returner. We'll have to see if he's running down the field trying to tackle someone tonight.

Jean is the guy that's sounding like he's tearing it up as a WR but he doesn't play ST.

Gonna be interesting to watch these guys in preseason and see who flashes.
