I don't see a thread on it anywhere (unless it's buried somewhere in the training camp thread), but what happened to Ben Tate?

I saw a brief statement on Chron.com that Tate was sidelined again, but no mention of what happened. Can someone shed some light on that, please?

Tate left both todays and yesterdays morning practice with a tight hamstring. Nothing that serious.

If Tate has injuries all throughout camp that could be a very big problem for him.

He is recovering still. From the reports he looks good when he is out there. But has to shut it down after a period of time. He will be fine in his role of 5-10 carries a game.

No way they just release Tate, who was the teams second round pick in last years Draft. If they would somehow get a 4th round, maybe even 5th round pick for him then maybe they'd trade him, but that's also problematic since they'd have to get somebody to assume his contract.

Tate isn't going anywhere.

To answer my own question, Ben Tate did NOT have a significant injury in college. In fact most anything you can read about him is toughness and durability. So I'll call somebody falling on his ankle a freak accident...and a hammy "a hammy", as Foster would put it. I think Tate will be fine, he will need to buck it up and practice if he wants to see gametime in the preseason though.

Foster, Ward, Tate. Foster 20(+) carries, Ward 5, Tate 5. How many yards would you guess that is? Foster averages 4.9 yards per attempt, Ward has 6.3 ypa, Tate as a featured senior averaged 5.1 ypa. That would put Foster at 99 yards, Ward at 31, Tate at 25. 155 yards on the ground, with everyone getting a piece of the pie? Delicious.

Except against Indy, when it will be 300 yards on the ground. :fans:

I remember reading that Tate had some hamstring problems in college. He also missed OTA's last year because of a hamstring. Around that time, I remember reading a post by CND about how a hamstring can be a chronic issue for a player.

Followed up by 100 yards the 2nd game against Indy. :strangle:

Broke his ankle on his second run (which was nice) in his first pre-season game against the Cardinals and went on the IR early.

So, yeah. He missed most of camp last year.

What the hell is the matter with our trainer?? Foster and now Tate! Does he know how to make these guys STRETCH before they practice? Geeeezzzzz!

I'm really pulling for this guy. For one thing he was a second round pic, but hes seems determined and you can tell he wants to succeed and loves the game. I hope he can overcome the injury thing and turn into a quality player.

Unfortunately, his hamstring seems to really be pulling for him, too.

This is why it makes sense to draft a running back late and/or sign a couple of PS guys. Foster hurt, Ward and Tate get carries. Tate hurt, Ogbonaya(sp) takes his carries. Always need to have an extra back or two stashed away that can step in.

Yeah, but that wasn't what I was referring to; I thought he missed OTAs and some of training camp before the ankle injury...

He had two rushes in a pre-season game and then his season was over, but I dont remember him missing time before that.

:heh:

I just wonder if the heat (here in Houston) and not training as usual this off season may have had something to do with our squad, and many other camps experiencing injuries throughout the league.

post-OTA quotes
from Kubiak (May 17, 2010 )... (on if RB Ben Tate had an injury) “You know what, he had a problem with his hamstring Friday back home. Came in here, we’re not comfortable with just turning him loose, so we’ll evaluate him for a couple of days and go from there. He’s going to miss a little time.”

from Kubiak (June 8, 2010)... (on rookie RB Ben Tate) “Well, he’s faster than everybody else, so obviously he’s fresh, and it’s his first day out here doing all of the full work. Things I was impressed with: Obviously, he was paying attention and knew what he was doing. We were actually doing some tough stuff on him today as far as no scripting, just calling stuff and seeing how guys react and turning the noise on. It was good to see him out here and get going.”
(on if he was impressed on how far along Tate looked on the field) “I was impressed with the fact that I know he’s been paying attention because he didn’t get out there and all of the sudden get lost. That’s what you’re looking for in guys. The guys are going to miss time and are going to have issues, but you can stay involved with the game, and obviously he’s been doing his homework so that’s good.”

going back thru the ht.com archives looks like Tate missed the first 2-3 weeks of OTAs last year with a hammy issue.

I was just curious

Other than stretching, hydration is key to avoiding hammy's. Super hot and not drinking enough for RBs can be a problem.
