Texans have former Bears P Brad Maynard in for a tryout. They need a veteran punter

I know nothing about Maynard.

I know nothing about Maynard.

IIRC, he was better at getting the ball inside the 20 than Turk last year BUT he was 32 in the league for average distance. Weaker leg than Turk, I believe.

Maybe he is the best veteran punter available? Seems like he is really in decline, has been effective for Bears last 10 years before that drafted by Giants 3rd rd. 1997.

Maybe, put I like punters and punting in general. It comes from playing rugby as an underclassmen in high school. I was taught how to kick a rugby ball be a mad Englishman.

Long way to go before the season. I doubt he'll be the only one we look at in camp.

It looks like this time last year he had major surgey, hopefully that was the reason his numbers were down. And he is now fully recovered.

This Football Outsiders writer is not impressed:

#Texans had to work hard to find a punter who wouldn't seem like an upgrade on Turk, but they managed to find one in Maynard

Ya know, I just don't give a rip - I'm happy to see Turk gone, and I honestly think this is one instance where if our UDFA outperforms him in Training camp and pre-season, he could actually win the job.

Maybe they didn't see Turks 7 yard punts at inopportune times. He was awful. He couldn't get the ball downfield until he was kicking from a shorter field. Then he boomed it out of the endzone

If the utube sensation guy wins a spot then more power to him. I just want to make sure he earns the spot against a legit vet.

I am watching the astros night after night get destroyed. And the team is full of guys with upside that are not proven, and typically not ready for the big show. When football season starts I am ready to watch a real contender perform, and I really only want the young rookie if he has an amazing preseason.

Hartmann was kicking 90 yards off a tee , thru the uprights in those video's. He was a kickoff specialist and has since gotten his punting up to NFL standards ..... Dude was booming them. I dont know if he has the accuracy to spot his punts but he has a hell of a leg.

The DisAstro's won in 10 tonight .... Despite an amazing play by the Reds SS that should have saved the winning run ..... but the Reds Catcher dropped the ball.
Bout time that team caught a break ....

Maynard is camp fodder, in case the UDFA kid gets hurt or really sucks.

Think Rackers vs. Brown last training camp. Everyone knew who SHOULD get the job, but you had to have an extra guy there (Brown) juuuust to make sure the better guy (Rackers) knew he had to earn it and be clutch the whole way.

I expect the UDFA kid to win the competition and be our punter and possibly our kickoff guy.

I'm fine with Hartmann ending up as the kickoff guy as long as Rackers is a gunner.

Hartmann did not impress me today with his punting out at camp. He only had one kick that looked good. He struggled with the wind.

Had a few end over end kicks. He is a long shot IMO.

......and he signs for a year.......

Skipper: I haven't the slightest idea of what you are talking about

Maynard: uh....what?

Gillis: It's helpful if you knew.....

Ginger: I'll just do my hair now. Knew what?

Mary Ann: The lockout.

Professer: What lock? I can fix it.

Skipper: The Monkeys!

(older Ginger): What a horrible excuse for a TV show

Maynard: I'm lost.

No chiz...I'll punt the ball more than 7 yards for whatever league minimum is. Put me in coach...I think I can get us 15 or 20 yards every time.
