Safety Eric Weddle, the San Diego Chargers' top free-agent priority, has reached agreement on a five-year, $40 million contract, sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

The deal includes $19 million in guaranteed money.

The contract is the highest ever given to a safety.

Anybody still want to go for the safety/corner combo instead of going full bore on aso?

Go full bore on both.

I think they had also signed Bob Sanders before the lockout so they have a nice pair of safeties who will compliment one another.

A tweet from Ryan Clark of the Steelers:

Interesting ... RT @RealRClark25: Congrats to Eric Weddle! He just signed a deal for what the steelers got @tpolamalu & I for combined! Wow!

If Bobby can stay injury free.

If so, excellent signings that will tremendously bolster their back end.

Considering this is the guy I wanted most, it's quite a blow.

Exactly.

Can't believe how many ppl were saying pass on aso as if the second tier guys were a given.

If you have a chance to sign a premiere talent in the position we are in you don't tell him no thanks.

We may have a situation right now where we've got both Aso and Joseph prepared to say 'Yes.'

Considering the contract he was given, I'm quite relieved.

Rivers McCown (Football Outsiders): Weddle will combine with Bob Sanders to form one of the best safety combos in the NFL for the 30 minutes of game action that Sanders plays next season. San Diego will still need to tinker a little more with it's front seven, but a back four of Weddle, Antoine Cason, Quentin Jammer and (when healthy) Sanders should be a stout secondary capable of repeating last season's fourth-ranked pass defense by DVOA.

Barring insane terms, it's hard to find anything negative about this deal from a San Diego perspective, particularly since it helps vanquish the stigma that the Chargers don't take care of their own.

Now thats funny (Bolded)
