with the blockbuster trade of pb soon to be official who would improve the Texans the most both in the short & long term? the Texans defensive corners are set, good talent & depth at safety, solid front line when healthly & LB's with some upside and deep. on offense QB and WR have star power. TE is a question mark till BJ plays, line is a mix of young, middle (Wade) and old while the RB position is a combination of late round to underperforming (Hollings) draft picks.

my choice would be Ware @ OLB if not available-

2nd choice Cedric Benson, franchise back

3rd choice trade down & add depth/future picks

I like that prioritization...we'll just have to see how it plays out.

i dont think there will be a way that we stay at 13 now. i believe their will only be 1% chance that we stay there. ```johnson or merriman are the only 2 i think we would sta there for. We do need to add some picks bc we have lost some. To add more depth

The Texans have lost one pick/draftee with this deal. Two picks that normally would acquire two players to get one player. One less guy. That does not necessitate trading down. May happen, but sheesh some of you draftniks are more rapped up in how many times you get to look at your draft board than what makes sense for the development of the team.

Right now i am in london and i havent heard the specifics. I heard we gave up our 47 and 73 to get him. Maybe its just 1 i dont know. I think we can get more value for trading down and gettting the 2nd rounder back or even adding an xtra 3rd.

I dont understand all this talk about a running back. We have DD, he is one of the most productive backs in the league. I can understand adding depth there especially in the later rounds. I just hope Cass has called the eagles and said our 1st and 4th for your first and and two 2nd rounders. That is one hell of a deal and we come out smellin like roses afterward. We can add tremendous depth and grab likely two superstars.

With the Redskins now looking at QB in the draft.. it increases the chances of either Merriman or Williamson falling to us.

my priorities go something like this

Benson
Merriman or Pollack (I cant say which I like more.. not sure.. both are good)
Williamson

Grid explain the Benson pick to me, and why Merrimen or Pollack. Merrimen is much more athletic and has played in a system similar to ours before so why do you put them so close together.

Redskins are looking at Jason Campbell at Pick #25, not #9. I suppose they might take an Aaron Rodgers or some such at #9, but probably not.

Benson because he is one of the best LBs to come out in a long time. he is of EQUAL value to Brown and Williams IMO. The only question is his motivation.. so if our FO beleives his motivation wont be an issue.. then I could see him being at the top of our list if he falls. He would provide some power running and durability to our running game. We want to be a running team, so that would be a good grab for us.

Merriman and Pollack are so close because .. well.. they are equally talented. Pollack gets a bad rap because he isnt some incredible athletic specimen.. but you cannot deny his abilities. He is the QUICKEST LB in this draft, and quickness can get you to the QB better than speed, IMO. He seems to have exactly the kind of attitude we like, and he plays with ALOT of fire. he has that non-stop motor that Capers is so partial too, and the perfect size to play OLB in the 3-4. Actually the only reason that I rate Merriman on the same level as Pollack is because Merriman is a better athletic specimen.. I think Pollack is the more talented football player.

If Alex Smith or Aaron Rogers falls to them at #9.. and they consider QB to be a need for them.. I think they would be fools to not SERIOUSLY consider it.

Ok Grid I see were you are going with it, but we have a 1000+ yrd running attack right now. Merrimen is a stud and so is Pollack, but Merriemen is definately better. at least 10 picks and a couple of million better. I have no problem with either of them though, I am glad that you dont want Williamson though since he is best used as trade bait for us. Think about it Carolina and the Eagles both wanting him and knowing that we are willing to trade for more picks. I think the Eagles offers us alot of options. We can take their seconds and first and use it to get back higher into the first to get Pollack, Ware, or Davis or we can add some studs and depth.

I would be fine with trading down with the Saints, Bengals, Vikings, or Rams and getting another 2nd or 3rd. Grab Pollack and go from there.

I, actually, would not mind the Williamson pick at all :) Not anymore anyway. i was totally against it.. but trading for Buchanan has changed everything and we could afford to grab great WR to play opposite of Johnson now.

Wow its funny bc i wanted Williamson and i still do dont get me wrong. I would be happy with him and i am sure Carr would be too having another target. It does make sense but i am sure we will listen to offers before we run the card up to the poduim.

You are allowed to bring back a certain amount--something like 4 bottles of wine or 2 gallons of beer duty free. Ask at any duty free shop or even a concierge.

sorry guys sometimes I forget when I use beer verbage that is uncommon to most lite beer drinkers, no pun intended. barleywine is considered one of the strongest styles in the world and its heritage dates to around 1903 in London by a Bass brew called #1 Barleywine. these fine beers are usually in excess of 10% alcohol and are rich, thick and very complex in character but balanced by generous hop additions that add a bitter edge to the sweet malt. think of a budweiser on steroids 4:1

bump.

back to topic.

what can the Texans do now to improve the team via the draft?

two glaring needs that have yet to be addressed are pass rusher and pass protector. I really don't care what order you put them in as long as they're addressed. Ware/Spears @ 13 for the rusher or Barron as the protector.

I think the only way we go O-Line in the first is if we trade down...If we stay put at 13, I could see us targeting Williamson, Cadillac, Benson, Ware, Merriman, and DJ...

if we trade down (hope we do) i'm all about a bulldog becoming a texan...wether it be pollack or thomas davis :thumbup

and if pollack isn't the athlete merriam is, then he is at least a superior 'work out warrior'. pollack squated 700lbs (strong base), cleaned 360 lbs (explosion)and to top it all off scored a 23 on the wonderlick (intelligence/quicker transition to LB), on top of his excellent quickness. info from cbs sportsline bio (http://cbs.sportsline.com/nfl/players/draft/418837).

I trading with STL would br a great move. We can pick up their 2nd and third pick if we do.

With 19 we pick up David Pollack and with the Ram 2rounder we get Reggie Brown to compliment AJ. In the Third we could take Elton brown if he was still there, or Center Chris Spencer, or Center Ben Wilkerson. These would be moves which would address three key positions and would be very doable if we traded with STL.

I'm with you AWT on the trade down with stl for the 2nd and 3rd round pick up. Though I'd prefer David Baas or Jerome Mathis in the 2nd. Or Donte Nicholason or Brown in the 3rd.

While DD is very good, he's not a franchise back. I could see us go after one of the big 3, with Cedric Benson being the most likely to drop to us.

If we trade down, I could see us trading for a low 20's pick this year & their #1 pick next year.

Heck, we might even trade out of the 1st round for a high 2nd round pick, a 3rd or 4th round pick, & a #1 pick next year.

Next year is the year to have two #1 picks.

I don't agree with Trading down unless we get a later 1 plus a 2 and a 3. This won't happen, but the first round is one of the deepest in talent in years. We could get a great player at 21-32 and then add depth in round 2 and 3 (we might even be able to steal a starter). I just think dropping completely out of round 1 would cost us Barron for sure (even though I know everyone on these boards seem to hate him - I saw him play 3 time this last year and he was awesome IMO), Jamaal Brown, Khalif Barnes, Troy Williamson, Mark Clayton, and any shot at Ware or Merriman.

We need a 1st round pick or we're stuck with a bunch of backups and one possible starter from an early 2nd rounder.

Coming into the offseason I felt the biggest area we needed to improve was the overall talent in the front seven. We didn't necessarily have one or two specific holes to fill, just that the production (pass rush) out of the front seven was not where it needed to be.

So far the significant changes we've made were to drop Sharper and Foreman and add Greenwood. Over last season I moved slowly into the "Peek needs to see more PT" camp but it is still hard to argue that Peek (not enough time on the field to make a true judgement) and Greenwood (switching systems) will be a signficant upgrade in overall talent level and we now have even less depth than before. I think we absolutely must add some Day 1 talent in the front seven.
At 13 that points towards someone in the "Tweener Crew" - Ware/Merriman/Pollack, Spears on the line, or perhaps Davis (I assume DJ is gonna be gone). Of that group its hard to say who the Texans are highest on and I don't watch enough college football to have a clue, but the more I read about him the more I like Pollack. 13 may be a bit high for him but he just seems to be a flat out football player and you can never have enough of those (...or QB's...or CB's... :) )

That being said I wouldn't mind seeing us pick up one of those top 3 RBs if available. If they are going to insist on a pound-pound-pound offense lets at least get a stable of RBs to do it with. I'm not as down on our WRs as others seem to be. I think the problems in our passing game (which it seem came mostly against cover 2) were more matters of scheme and pass blocking than the relative skill of our WRs.

y'all have some very good ideas & players listed, for instance Pollack will be a dominant 3-4 OLB in the right system, just imagine plugging him right into the three time defending Superbowl champion New England Patriots :shocked

he also would address the lack of Texans pass rush, I would be extremley carefull trading down to far and still expecting him to be on the board. any trade would have to made in a matter of minuets while he was still available with that teams pick, so if it happens it will happen quick.

a trade down would also help address the Center position and there are some good ones, Baas, Spencer, Incognito, Wilkerson and my sleeper Scott Mruczkowskie out of Bowling Green. he is 6' 4 1/2" 323 the same size as Baas, a little slower but could still be on the board in the 4th round.

I still remember the night after last seasons game final game against Cleveland and the Texans show on local TV where McClain matter of factly stated that the #1 priority would be to get some protection for David Carr. his input cannot be discounted and probably had a lot to do with driving negoiations to sign free agent Pace from the Rams. so don't be shocked if the Texans select Alex Barron if they stay put @ #13.

so for now it would seem the big three in any order you like would be-

Alex Barron
Troy Williamson
Demarcus Ware

if a trade down a statement like this could mean david pollack-

“I think there is more of a possibility than ever before that we’ll entertain offers to move back,” Casserly said. “The reason is one scenario that we face is there could be a number of players that we like in a group, and then we can move back. Like any other team in the league, you have an elite group of players you might trade up for, but again, we’re not going to be jumping up very far (if we do).”

If one of the big three RBs, M. Williams, B. Edwards isn't there @ 13, look for us to trade down for pretty cheap. Like maybe just a second rounder to make up for the one given up for Buchanan.
We all know Williams and Edwards won't be there, so I think we trade down.
I know that many people say that trading down is easier said than done, since you need a willing trade partner, but I think we will be willing to do it cheaply enough to make it worthwhile (sp?) for a team.

Baas/Spencer and Roddie White maybe?

I have come around to the conclusion that I only want to see two picks from the Texans at this point. I want them to trade up (they won't) and nab either DJ or Benson. With whatever they have left after engineering the trade up I trust in Casserly to find someone far more valuable than the round they were chosen in. He's done a good job of that so far.

Either one works for me but I'm leaning more towards Benson because I like big running backs from UT like most Houstonians who grew up watching Earl.

Not that Benson is Earl of course, nobody's Earl but Earl.

honestly i don't think we're drafting a OLB in the first round...i think capers likes peeks ability to start and he'll be our starting ROLB...that being said here's my board

1. DJ (trade up but only if he falls to san diego)
2. Benson
3. M. Williams
after that i think we trade down
4. M. Clayton
5. Spears
6. Barron
7. Pollack
8. White
9. J. Brown
10. H. Miller (last option)
