View Full Version : Let's say that you're Charley Casserly . . .

. . . and you are going to stick to your promise that you're going to take the BPA on your board.

San Diego has made it's pick at #12, and now you're on the clock. You look up at your big board, and you see that Pac-Man Jones is the highest rated player left on your board.

What do you do?

I would imagine Casserly is busy moving all the corners down 15 slots on the board right about now.

What would I do?

I would go ahead and take Pac-Man and kiss Aaron Glenn good-bye on June 1st.

Let's see now. What was Sharper's ....errr, I mean Glenn's cap hit for this year?

I seriously doubt they will cut Glenn... I think they will keep him for at least one more year so he can teach DROB and PB more.

Well it depend on if Merriman, Ware or Spears are on the board, if they aren't I'd trade down.

This may be a little of point but does anyone else think that Casserly wears a wig?

Glenn's cap hit of $5.12 mil this season. If cut now he would count about $3.5 mil in dead space. IMO it is unlikely they cut Glenn prior to this season because the cap savings is not significant and while the Texans feel Buchanon still has the potential to justify his original draft position, they are likely to want to see him pick up the system and new attitude before sticking him in as a starter.

Trade down and pick up Matt Jones or David Baas late in the first and think about who I want with the extra 2nd or 3rd I pick up.

aaron glenn will be the first real texan to retire as a texan...boselli doesn't count in my book...we will only pick at the 13th pick if benson, merriman, or williamson is still there otherwise i see us trading down for clayton or pollack

I hope the Texans don't stay at 13 to pick Williamson. I haven't watched much of him, but my impression is that he's a speedster, but has questionable hands. They resigned Bradford who is the Texans legitimate deep threat with so-so hands. Do they need someone else like that?

Anyone know more about Williamson?

I also believe this has a very good chance of happening. Glenn is from this area, he's had his big last contract and he's made it most of the way through that contract. He's getting up in years and he seems like a very smart and reasonable player. He's an original Texan from the expansion draft and I think he's going to sign another deal after this one to be a backup for a short time before probably heading for retirement.

I would not be surprised to see Glenn associated with the Texans after that in some capacity as well.

And Marcus, If I were Casserly I'd have to pass on Pac Man and go for the next best guy on the board. I just don't need him now.

The philosophy since Carr has been "BPA except QB" now it would be "BPA except QB & CB." I would trade down or draft the next talent, depending on who else is available.

If Pac-man is still on the board at 13, there will be some strong interest from teams wanting to trade up and take him. The Texans could accept a trade, move down a handfull of spots, pick up an additional pick in the 2nd or 3rd (depending on how far down they move), and select a quality player suck as Clayton or T. Davis.

The more I hear/read about Davis, the more he grabs my attention. Wong's in his last year (and makes a ton), grooming a replacement can't hurt.

Well, it looks like a lot of people are going to wig out if CC drafts another CB.

Considering that we're in a division that plays Indianpolis twice a year, and we haven't won a game against them yet, you can't have too many cornerbacks.

And . . . would you put it past Charley to want certain people to believe that he's no longer interested in drafting one?

I think I recall Vinny saying Williamson won the WR compitition handily. I think he said he tore it up actually. So I think the questionable hands is a myth.

Here it is.

Williamson tore up the WR skills competition. He beat out Clayton and Edwards to win it and some say he dominated the event like nobody else since Javon Walker.

the questinable hands is not a myth. You just need to watch tape, and he drops a good deal of passes, not because of his hands but because of his concentration. The kid is a stud no doubt about it but he is not the pick. I would look at the board and if I see. Merrimen, Ware, Spears, Williamson, Davis, even Pollack on the board I dont take Jones. He is the third best corner in the draft why take him. Hopefully I look at the board and make a call to Philly and say do you like Willamson here he is on a silver platter for the low low price of your first and both seconds or first, highest second, and third.

Williamson won two plasma televisions in the WR skills competition, where he whooped up on Michael Clayton and Braylon Edwards. I have someone very close to the team that tells me the Texans are enamoured with him.

well thanks, but I'm not really that close :heh:

seriously why resign Bradford then? one of the major reasons to draft Williamson was his speed to stretch the field with Bradford we still have that speed even though we could not take advantage of it enough because Carr had no time to sit in the pocket. I know I don't have to tell you that but why when WR now along with CB are already the strengths of the team use our 1st round pick on another WR, just because the Texans feel he is the bpa?

The way I see it.. if we grab Williamson, then Bradford was just an insurance policy.

After all, there is no garauntee that Williamson will fall to us. If Williamson and Johnson cements our WRs for the next 10 years though.. that could be a really nice move for us.

I still think that OLB is just as high on our list, but with our improved secondary now, I wonder if we couldnt be moving towards making Peek the starter, and blitzing a whole lot more.

seriously why resign Bradford then?Do you have the psychic ability to know for sure that Williams falls to us? Bradford singed a one year contract. Thta is not exactly a sign of long term stability.

I would hope they would be thinking this. OLB is not the biggest need on this team. Peek is in his 3rd year and showed at the end of last year he can do some things. Half the problem last year was the short amount of time the OLBs had to get to the QB, and thats why peek and babin were so close many times but couldnt get the sack. Now that this team has more speed in the ILBs to cover over the middle and three good corners to stop the receivers, Peek will show he can start and will be able to blitz more, with the help of more than a 4 or 5 man rush sometimes. This team needs to draft some DLine to plug the middle and give some depth and a good rotation. THe LB they need is someone to learn the middle for next season. There are already some prospects at OLB in Anderson and Cheatwood that have some promise, so maybe another later round pick at OLB would be good but there are other areas that still need to be addressed first

Here's how Casserly answers this question:
“Are you going to acquire a player as talented as Phillip Buchanon in the second round of the draft?” Casserly asked. “The answer is no.”

And now Casserly will have to slightly amend his plans for Saturday. But he doesn’t mind.

“I guess I have to add something to what I said before today,” Casserly said. “We’re going to take any position in the first round except quarterback…and now cornerback.”

You are talking like we already drafted someone. You asked why sign Bradford. I think it is obvious why. He knows the system, he is cheap, he singed for one year and he is a good character person. Gaffney and Armstrong are the slot guys. Unless you start Starling we don't have anyone behind Bradford.

no it seemed like you are with this Quote-

I have someone very close to the team that tells me the Texans are enamoured with him.

Bradford gives the Texans enough at the WR position that its not essential to draft a Williamson with the 1st round pick. I agree with this statement-
He knows the system, he is cheap, he singed for one year and he is a good character person.

Gaffney and Armstrong are the slot guys. so we are set at the #2 position?

Unless you start Starling we don't have anyone behind Bradford. yes but do we HAVE to spend the 1st pick to address this need? I'm on record that Bradford might remain a Texan, one more year if he produces could mean another year etc..he is under utilized & if David Carr gets better protection he will see the ball more often.

Vinny
04-20-2005, 04:49 PM
the slot is not the WR2. Thats where Bradford generally plays.

Beats me what we HAVE to do.

Saying that we like the prospect is a bit different than saying we will certainly draft him.

Well i am not seeing anyone arguing with me when i say i think we are definitely trading down minus a Derrick Johnson or Shawne Merriman fall. I think Ware or Blackstock, maybe Burnett could be the pick but i think that depends on who we trade with and what part of the 1st round it is. Late teens in Ware area, early 20's is Blackstock and late 20's in Burnett area so it depends on who ends up where.

TheOgre

Bradford is primarily on the team because he wasn't wanted anywhere else. We got him at a bargin. If we don't draft a WR in the 1st, I think Bradford may start this season and let the mid-round rookie "learn the ropes". If we do take a WR with our 1st, I think Bradford provides us with depth on the outside.

I would like Williamson very much. He is prob one of my favorite players in this draft. I do think we will entertain offers before we run the card up there. I think if the price is right... I think there are about 3 teams out there that would offer it. Lets say Seattle offers its #23 (i think) and 2nd rounder to move up and Benson would you turn that down. Or Philly wants Williamson bc they believe he is their man to take them to the next step and they offer #31 and #35 would you turn that down? We could get some really good talent #23 we could get Blackstock then we have a 2nd rounder to go WR or OL. Same with the Philly deal we go Jones and Burnett to do a what if off the top of my head

If the Eagles give us 31 and 35, i would like Baas at 31 and Hawthorne at 35.
It will inject youth in the trenches.

How great is it that if we take a WR or OLB in the first, it won't be because of need. The only pick at #13 that could possibly indicate drafting out of need would be Barron, and I don't expect that to happen. On Monday, we are going to have talent and depth at most of our postions. What is that going to feel like?!!!

YES, BABY! Bring on the COLTS!!!!

If that happens Baas will replace McKinny within a year and hawthorne brings youth and a mean streak to the D-Line and then in the third you go with a possible big play WR like Mathis to learn the ropes from Bradford.
SUPER BOWL AROUND THE CORNER!!

TexanBacker93

If they could make a deal with the Eagles I wouldn't mind seeing Roddy White and David Baas. White's another solid speedy WR that isn't rated much lower than Williamson.

I think the Texans can get better value trading down a little and getting some added depth at 2 positions that need it. Plus it would give the Texans a starting center to take over when they release McKinney next season. That's just a guess, but he's scheduled to be a big cap number and not worth it in my opinion.

I don't think Barron is going to be the choice. It doesn't sound like he would be a definite starter over Wand and at #13 if you can't get a guy that will start you might as well move down.

royce1054
04-21-2005, 07:33 AM
Yes the Philly trade is a good one. The chances of that actually happening arent that good. I do however believe a trade will likely happen. I do think we should get into the teams that might want to trade up and add an xtra player. Even with the Jets tradeing #26 to Raiders for Jolley and #2 (prob one got from us) might look to trade back up. Also Seattle, KC, i know there are a few more teams. I do think we should look at those other teams and their what if trades too.
