He looks like a good prospect with the Texans 3rd round pick if he is still around. What does everyone think? Here are his stats from ESPN:

Stanford Routt (Houston)

Vital statistics: 6-foot-1 3/8, 192 pounds, 4.31 in the 40.

Numbers game: A high school All-American in track and also starred for Houston in that sport for two seasons. In 2003, was an NCAA qualifier in the 60- and 200-meter sprints. In 42 appearances, 27 starts, had 136 tackles, three tackles for loss, seven interceptions, 23 passes defensed and one fumble recovery. Returned three kickoffs for 36 yards.

Upside: Outstanding build for the position. Terrific speed and can mirror even the swiftest wide receivers deep down the field. Good break and recovery. Nice hands and usually does a solid job reading the quarterback.

Downside: For all his size, doesn't play very physically, and doesn't muscle receivers off the ball. Gives ground way too easily. Footwork needs a ton of work. Takes poor angles and, worse, gets tangled up and looks awkward in change of direction situations. Very raw and too often looks like a track guy trying to play football. Does not play with discipline and, because he's so anxious to make a play, gets out of the framework out of the coverage. Not a sure tackler.

The dish: There's a lot with which to work and, frankly, he'll need to get to a team that will display patience with him. On the flip side, his size and brilliant speed make him too hard to ignore. Probably a third-rounder.

Stanford Routt is a hometown kid and a freakishly fast CB, but he is a project. First, a third round selection is way to high for him. He will be available in the fourth or fifth round with the amount of CBs that are out there. Second, he has a lot to learn. Look for us to pick him (I hope we do unless we get C. rogers) in the fifth or sixth round

Routt's stock has risen since he ran a 4.29 40 at the combine. Mainly a track star at UH, his speed and size will be hard to ignore on draft day. Could be a 3rd or 4th rounder.

How many pics do we have in the 3rd and 4th? I can see us picking him up, getting him in the system for an immediate impact next year. You can never have enough big corners running legit sub 4.4 speed in my opinion.

There is a good chance we take him in the 3rd. IMO. Many of the "value boards" have him listed in the 3rd. He would be a good project for Glenn and Hoke to work with.

I wouldn't take him before the 4th...He has good speed, but just isn't a good CB right now...If he has a year to learn from John Hoke I think he could develop into a solid CB in the NFL...He's mainly a track guy trying to play football right now, but that can change...

This guy's speed is intriguing, but you can't take a guy just for that. Corners rarely run a straight line for 40 yards (maybe once per game?). The ESPN review says he's terrible at change of direction... that's real bad. But I must say he has great size and speed. I would agree with the above posts that a fifth/sixth may be worth it.

I agree Ruttiger, 40 is an over-rated stat. Acceleration is more important for a football player.
