My thoughts exactly. Every year Smith tries to get smart in the later rounds with DB's. Just take the BPA Smith you *****. You havent picked a diamond in the rough yet. :toropalm:

03/25/2011 - Virginia Tech Pro day: Every team was represented at Virginia Tech's March 17 pro day, where 17 players worked out. CB Rashad Carmichael (5 10 1/4, 189) ran 4.43 and 4.45 in the 40, had a 4.15 short shuttle, 33 vertical and 10-1 broad jump. - Gil Brandt, NFL.com

•Full Rashad Carmichael News Wire
Overview
Carmichael possesses the instincts and awareness to be an effective contributor in a zone defensive scheme, but thus far has not shown the physicality and aggressiveness at the line of scrimmage necessary to succeed as an every-down press coverage corner at the next level.

Despite shortcomings in man coverage, his sub-4.4 speed and ability to play the ball make him a legitimate mid-round candidate who can provide nickel support and solid depth in a Cover 2-type of zone scheme, while bringing some explosive big-play ability to the field.

Analysis
Positives: Explosive, rangy athlete with nice acceleration and top-end speed. Lanky and slender, but isn't afraid to go for the big hit. Fearless tackler willing to engage bigger backs and receivers head-on. Gets his head around in coverage and adjusts his body nicely to the ball in the air. Has a second gear that allows him to correctively close gaps between himself and receivers who have gained separation. Light-footed, smooth backpedal maintaining still head and upper body. Displays good awareness of both the quarterback's eyes and receiver location when playing off in zone coverage. Gets his hands up quickly to make plays on balls that he may get his head around late on. Keeps his eyes in the backfield and shows good zone discipline when defending the run.

Negatives: Struggles to get his hands on opposing receivers and create disruptive contact at the line of scrimmage when playing press. Doesn't crowd receivers enough in man coverage, often leaving an unnecessary cushion of space both off the line and downfield, thus allowing the receiver room to maintain balance and keep route accuracy. Tends to slow up when turning out of his backpedal and running upfield, often leaving himself in a "catch up" situation with his assigned receiver. When reacting to slant routes underneath in zone coverage, doesn't get a quick enough first step to consistently meet the ball at the receiver. Puts himself in good position to make tackles against the run, but tends to wait on the ballcarrier rather than drive through him, thus leaving him vulnerable to jukes and cutbacks. Displays very poor tackling technique when engaging

I assume we will make a big push to sign Ike Taylor. However, thus far, here are our DB options.

CBs: Jackson, Allen, Harris, Carmichael, Paymah
S: Nolan, Quinn, McManis, Williams, Baker

There is talent there but the secondary is incredibly young. I doubt Kubiak makes the same mistake he did last year in going with a young secondary. Sign Ike Taylor or another vet and let the young guys develop

From what I am reading, Carmichael is a bit of a roll of the dice here. A bit inconsistent, but high on INTs and is said to be a playmaker. Makes sense with an all round CB Harris already in the door.

I'm just guessing that if they're serious about acquiring a vet CB, that adding the vet and B. Harris would be enough addition to the CB corps. Drafting another CB kida made it seem like they're not too confident on signing a vet, just an assumption

It gives them a glimmer of hope if they can't lure a capable veteran CB./!?,

For an example of a Millen grade see Seattle.

"25. James Carpenter, OT, Alabama
What the hell is this? James Carpenter is a second-round prospect at best, and if the Seahawks wanted to improve the line, Gabe Carimi and Derek Sherrod were both there. Vikings and Eagles fans have to be thrilled, because this selection passes both of theirs as the strangest in the 2011 NFL Draft. Sorry, Seattle fans. (Pick Grade: Millen on Crystal Meth) "

Hmmm...Idk how I feel about that. Kind of wish they had gone somewhere else with the trade down/CB pick tactic. I think it's him sticking to his board.

Whether the board is right is up to interpretation but each team rates players differently so he's picking who he thinks is best.

Whether they turn out successful is up to the coaches and the player.

Can he be the player he once was? I will never doubt him. I would love his presence as much as his ability on this defense.

I think Chris Carter could be the guy for us. Herring said he likes to have 6 active LBs during games, 3 inside and 3 outside all rotating to stay fresh (have fun telling Meco and Cushing to leave the field). Carter would be a nice situational guy and could probably play solid on special teams.

Or we could go offense for the first time.

Redskins, Cowboys, Eagles, Texans all vying for Asomugha according to these guys on ESPN

We have no chance.

Those other three teams are all heavy hitters in free agency.

If I am Aso, why in the heck would I come to Houston instead of those other three teams? I mean, I can see not wanting to go to Washington where things have been pretty jacked up for a long time (and seeing how Shanahan treated McNabb).

But Dallas and Philly are two teams constantly finding themselves somewhere "in the mix" in the NFC East. We can't offer that.

Maybe the reason we're drafting so heavy on defense is that it's (A) filling true needs, obviously, and (B) it's a gesture to show Aso we're dead dog serious about having a top-rated defense here.

I think everybody here ought to prepare themselves for the very real likelihood that even though we're mentioned as being after Aso...we're going to have to settle for something else.

That's my advice. Better to be pleasantly surprised than supremely pissed off.

Yes. Exactly. Take the BPA and just add football players. Its all about depth at this point. If you get a starter from this point on, either you have major problems on your team, or hit a homerun.

There you going using sound draft logic on a MB full of emotional fans! I love it that most of the posters here who all know the secondary was horrible last year think its a bad thing for our veteran DC who has watched tape on all these guys to load up at DB and let the best survive and the rest walk. If Wade wanted another DB and Carmichael was his pick then I like it until proven otherwise,

If that was Smith Pick it would have been a pick that would have been harder to justify. Something like a TE who isnt the BPA.

Nope, I see him as a box safety. Good hips, but slow feet.

Completely erroneous, again.

Shiloh Keo-SS-Idaho...Overlook 5-11 ht, 4.7 40 due to heady play, bit hits, very quick ft, hands (11 car INT), PR ability.

Oh, and Maycock was just praising him for his footwork just now in NFLN. 'He's a good PR, you have to have good footwork as a PR. Just watch his footwork when returning kicks in game tapes' *

Another armchair QB speaking on the prospects as if he been following him for years, or even seen 20 minutes of their gamefilm.

*paraphrasing.

As far as the Shiloh Keo goes, I love drafting players with unique names! |See him strictly as special team players though, and Carmichael competing with Nolan/FA for the other S spot beside Quin.

It's shaping up just like I wanted it to: Defense, defense, defense, and on and on and on...just going to make every single secondary player EARN their spot instead of this freaking "tenure/seniority philosophy" that was killing our defense for five years.

It's like an open audition for secondary at Reliant. All we need is a camera crew, the FOX network, and some judges and viewers to help make this thing legit as a talent search.

If you play secondary in Houston, you better bring it during camp. If there is a camp. A delay and possibly a late start to the reg season MIGHT be the only saving grace for Texans secondary players--Couldn't just throw rookie CBs and a rookie SS out there if there isn't any prep time beforehand. That's the only way I see a Texans secondary player (currently on the roster) breathing a sigh of relief.

This was a thin draft for safeties in all rounds let alone the 5th round. I think its a long shot at best you find a "serious safety prospect" with the 152 pick. I wasnt look for a developmental QB with the pick but I would say a kid with most of the tools with bad technique tutored under Kubiak has a better chance of panning out for the Texans than a long shot safety.

Quinn is going to be moved to safety and if Free Agency ever begins I bet Wade finds a no name guys who plays the position the way he likes it.

Plus it takes balls for this staff that needs to produce this season to take a developmental QB.

Could this also make Leinart or Orlovsky trade bait this year when the lockout ends?

Draft grades thus far-

JJ Watt- A+
Brooks Reed- A
Brandon Harris- A
Rashad Carmichael- C
Shiloh Keo- B-
TJ Yates- B-

Assigning grades like in college (A worth 4, B+ 3.3, B- 2.7, etc) and we get- 3.23333 = B

I am bumping it up to a B+ due to hitting on the early picks

If somebody needs a QB who can run out of the endzone Im sure we'll take no less than a 2nd round pick.

But it is going to happen though.

Yeah, but then he's available to all 32 teams as well. And likely at the same time as veteran FA if they like the guy, you take now go give yourself less to do when FA starts.

I am not talking like a 2 round draft pick for them. I am thinking like middle round picks for teams who need some decent back-ups.

If they are decent backups, why would we want to get rid of them? ;) I dont think either of those guys have much value. Perhaps a 6th or 7th round pick.

I would normally agree with you, but look at the way the draft has gone. Qbs are being taken earlier than we thought. If you want your guy you gotta grab him. I mean, Newton,
Locker, Gabbert, and Ponder went in the top 12, whereas Dalton and Kaepernick went 35/36.

Plus, if we got say Chris neild or Anthony Gray in the 7th, would you still be disappointed?

North Carolina has been full of NFL talent the past couple years but what have they done? its a great College environment I get that, love watching their home games too so I have followed their program. He does have decent ball velocity but he has had great targets to throw to who have the ability to adjust to his throws, Greg Little this past season & two years ago had Hakeem Nicks & Brandon Tate. I do like both his 5 & 7 step drops but I don't recall too may three step, quick decision type of throws. I like Kubiak to develop a QB, seems kinda of silly not to take advantage of his mentoring abilities.

Yes they have.

Giants 1

Eagles 1

So that is 5 Huskers not 4.

We are a NFC east type of team obviously.

They aren't decent back ups for us, why would they be decent back ups for someone else?

Point taken but I don't want to carry 4 quarterbacks on the roster heading into the season. Why not try to get something instead of cutting one?

There are still some good players on the board.

Need MOAR picks.
