I love Dareus at the top.
Best choice for the Panthers.
Why do you think the Texans would take Smith in the first round as opposed to Bowers, Jordan or Watt?

Bowers looks like a 4-3 DE to me. I think the others all rate out at about the same area. 15 or so. Even though 5 techs are coveted for the 3-4 defense, pass rushers are more valuable. Especially to a team that has Mario Williams, Antonio Smith and a couple others that might be able to play DE. I am assuming they will put Aldon at pass rush OLB.
I would rather have Quinn but I think he will go higher than 11.

I am not the biggest Smith fan, but I dont think he is a Maybin clone. Smith is a little heavier, and I think Buffalo stinted his growth by putting him at DE.

I think at least three qb's will be taken ahead of us.

If three are selected before Texans two of those will under achieve expectations. Not based just off sheer talent but fit & complimentry pieces around them.

11. Houston Texans-Aldon Smith
No offense intended but I sure hope your wrong. Smith is a great athlete but he's 2 yrs. away from being a good/great 4-3 DE, he is not a 3-4 OLB.
Bowers and Suh as starters for the Lions. Yikes.

quite different actually. maybin was/is an undersized 4-3 de that relies nearly totally on his speed and was a 20 yr old, 1 season wonder who turned that in a top 15 pick.
smith is a prototypically sized 3-4 olb. he's the same size as demarcus ware & is a very good athlete also who had quite a bit of success rushing from inside also (where hand speed & violence are needed more)
in fact, if your looking for a player w/ some similarities to maybin, von miller would be alot closer

how'd you figure that? as above, hes a perfect sized 3-4 olb
my hope for the #11 pick is that we will get robert quinn but im gonna be good if its aldon smith also. its a pretty logical pick tahts quite likely to happen so prepare yourselves for it

Look, I'm not a big Von Miller fan like everyone else. He's good enough, but not top 3 talent. However, he produced multiple years in a row and played with his hand off the ground. That isn't Maybin at all. I don't think Smith will be quite as much of a bust as Everett Brown and Maybin (and God did I hate those picks in their draft classes) but I think he'll be in the Jason Babin group. He's got NFL size unlike the other two guys everyone on this board loved. He isn't a DeMarcus Ware talent. Not even close. I've been able to see a lot of his games/reviews due to my location. He's not a football player. I don't think Cam Jordan is going to be anything special at all, and I'd reach for him (IMO) at #11 before I even thought about taking Smith.

I think it is real hard to pass up Quinn or Julio Jones at that point.

Cam 1st to Carolina(yuck)
Gabbert to Buffalo
Locker to Tenn.
I wouldn't do these, but I think it will happen. Mallet to Minnesota. Or swap Mallet with Locker.

I am thinking we are a good trade up partner for anyone who wants Locker or Mallet ahead of Minnesota. If either are left.

Yeah. I think we'll somehow screw it up though.

HAPPY DRAFT DAY!!!
I still hear the rumors of Newton #1 to the Panthers but I will believe it when I see it.
#1 They drafted Jimmy Claussen last year with a 2nd round pick.
#2 They dont have a 2nd round pick this year meaning this pick must contribute immediately. They cant just sit on the bench learning for 2 years.
#3 The owner is frugal, and wont want to spend #1 QB money. Especially on a project QB.
#4 Steve Smith isnt happy in Carolina, and is a liability to assume will be there next year.
#5 Gave up over 123 rushing yards per game. Good for 22nd.
If the Panthers cant trade out of the #1 spot they will take Marcell Dareus or A.J. Green.
That being said, I know this is a QB driven league, and certain teams can become drunk on a players physical talents, it is at least possible that the Panthers take Newton and tell their fans not to expect playoffs for at least 3 years as they rebuild around Newton.

Newton, Dareus, Peterson and Green are said to be in the mix but Newton is the favourite from what I have read/listened to.
I still think Dareus is the smart move.

If they had the same coach that picked Clausen, I would agree, but Rivera wants to make this his team.

And they will be his team when he puts his stamp on their defense. Spags is a recent example of a defensive minded coach skipping the QB's in 2008 and 2009, getting a tackle and D end. In 2010, 2 years into his HC job he got his franchise QB from Oklahoma.
