While what you are doing is a degree different, it really could have been combined with this thread.

http://www.texanstalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=80270

I will leave it as is.

A more important point is that the Texans generally keep these visits quiet and the Chronicle's "insider," John McClain does not leak the information. Long story shorter, unless the player or his agent talks about the Texans visit it won't get published.

I think the Texans rely alot more on game film for assessing players and don't put alot of importance on the Combine and workouts.

I believe you are correct.

So far this method that Gary and Rick have used has led to a complete failure in the war room over the last 4 yrs.

The proof is in the pudding the Texans draft record = FAIL. Rick and Gary need to learn from this and change their ways. Right Kubiak in all of his hard headedness is going to change his ways. LOL

There needs to be a balance though. Bring in guys to scrutinize them even further, but dont make it the base of your scouting operations.

Priorities:

1) Game Film
2) All Star Games
3) Team Workouts
4) Combine
5) Pro Days

At least, that is how I do it.

Since when?

Mario - workout warrior
Molden - workout warrior
Barwin - workout warrior
Tate - workout warrior

Let me say that I'm acknowledging that Williams has played at a high level at times. And that Barwin & Tate could become good players. Just saying that there is zero evidence the Texans discount combine and workout performances. That puts them with the majority of NFL teams.

Ont thing to consider is that Wade Phillips was a coach at the East West game this year. So, he got a lot of individual work with his West D players and probably scouted the East ones. I am sure he does not need to bring any of them in for additional interviews/walk through. Plus, he may have had a chance to observe some of the North/South and non seniors at their pro days/combine.

I am sure they will bring in players, but they will likely divulge later round prospects from Texas Universities rather than the ones they are really gunning.

Kubiak said last year just before the 2010 Combine when he was explaining to the media why he was missing the Combine due to surgery for snoring that the Texans put more importance on game film and not so much on the Combine and workouts.

Come on, man.

I'll give you Molden as a workout warrior since I don't know his college stats offhand. But the other guys?

Mario was on SI's All American team. He was a 3 year starter and came out as a Junior. In his last season in 12 games, he had 24 tfl, 14.5 sacks, 15 hurries, a safety, and a blocked kick. The guy was a MONSTER in college.

Connor Barwin was a TE for most of his college career but his one season as a DE, he had 12 sacks, 20 pressures, 8 pass deflections, 3 fumble recoveries, and 3 blocked kicks. The guy had tremendous upside.

Ben Tate finished 5th on the all time Auburn rushing list even though he wasn't a highlighted rusher for most of his time there until his senior season.

These guys were not workout warriors that were just products of the combine. They had some good tape.

If Smithiak has a drafting problem, it's because they seem to take "project" guys and then don't seem to develop them to their potential. Barwin only had 1 year playing the position they drafted him for. Jacoby Jones was a small school guy that they knew would take time to develop. Antwan Molden was another small school guy with a ton of talent but who would need to be developed. Amobi Okoye was young and talented and was going to need some time to develop.

If this is true it tells me that the Texans already have the top of their big board figured out and know who they want, and second choices, and are now just looking at late round picks and UDFA's. I sure hope that Phillips will be in charge of this draft cause Smithiak is an ***** when it comes to the draft.

On Houstontexans.com, they reported that the Texans are set with their big board.

Thanks Srono for the update.
I have Culliver on my radar now.
(Got quite a bit of game tapes on him).
He was a 5-star recruit out of HS as a safety.
No idea why they played him at WR in his freshman year, moved him back to safety in his sophomore year; asked him to play CB toward the end of his junior year (probably because of his nagging shoulder injury - don't know if the injury he suffered in 2010 had anything to do with this injury, which was in 09 and didn't seem to be as significant; don't know if he did switch to Cb at the end of 09 or not but will find out.)
Excellent straight line speed, that's for sure.
Sounds like he's going to work out for quite a few teams though.

South Carolina cornerback-safety Chris Culliver is a fast-rising draft prospect who's scheduled to conduct private workouts for the Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Ravens and the Kansas City Chiefs, according to NFL sources with knowledge of the situation. Culliver is also slated to take an official visit with the Minnesota Vikings. The Houston Texans are also expected to meet with Culliver. Originally projected as a fourth-round draft pick, Culliver has also drawn third-round grades from several teams. A 6-foot, 200-pound cornerback who has also played safety, Culliver ran the 40-yard dash in 4.36 seconds at the NFL scouting combine.

South Carollina cornerback-safety Chris Culliver is a fast-rising draft prospect who's scheduled to conduct private workouts for the Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Ravens and the Kansas City Chiefs, according to NFL sources with knowledge of the situation.

He registered a 1.50 10-yard split and a 38 1/2 inch vertical leap, a 10-03 broad jump. He also posted a 4.08 20-yard shuttle and a 6.08 three-cone drill.

Culliver is the Gamecocks' all-time kick return leader with 2,476 yards.

Culliver dealt with a torn pectoral last season, but has recovered from his injury.

He was moved from safety to cornerback prior to last season.

As a junior, Culliver was a second-team All-Southeastern Conference selection when he recorded 52 tackles and returned 26 kickoffs for 585 yards.

As a sophomore, he intercepted three passes with 60 tackles and forced two fumbles.

Culliver signed with South Carolina as a wide receiver before moving to free safety.
