This team has Let go quite a bit of LAST season starters. Grant it we weren't that good anyways :tiphat: BUT. For example Zach Diles he was a hell of a Gem at LB, I think he made Cushing and Ryans Better. Now we have to get another caliber LB that equals our surpasses Diles. Draft/FA

Pollard and Wilson, now i know wilson sucked i think everyone does. But not only now do u need a CB our 2, but now u need 2 Safties, Our u risk putting Quinn Back their, and that could turn out to be worse than having Wilson back there. Sounds like a lot of gambling except even more than last season. I Like Nolan but i'm not sure on his coverage skills either. So Now You have to find 1-2 CBs, a Couple of Safties. via Draft/FA

You Fail To Sign Leach, Now he was the Main Reason for success last season in the running game. So u find Someone who can open the gap for Foster like leach Does. Draft/FA

If u Dont Get Jacoby Jones back, U have to give Dorin Dickerson a shot, and draft a late guy. But if D.D don't work out, then where are we at. Maybe a Wr via Draft/FA

Last but least Mark Anderson was easily one of our best DE last season. He has good feet and a nose for the ball u tender him and will likely lose him after a CBA is signed. You let him go and then put all hope into Barwin coming off a serious injury. I guess if Barwin goes down we can always try to sigh Schobel again.

Now that is a lot of spots to fill and a lot of IF's. I'm not trying to be negative just honest. I hope the texans do fill all their needs with Superstars, but have they texans ever done that before ?!?!?!?!?

Losing Diles, Pollard, and Wilson have put the Texans in a tough spot? The Texans were 6-10 with one of the worst defenses in the NFL with those guys. How can it get tougher than that?

A case can be made that transitioning to the 3-4 will be tough. But even that's hard to argue after watching them fail in the 4-3. The Texans are in a tough spot because they haven't figured out how to build or coach any type of defense. Wade Phillips is supposed to come in and erase the cluelessness of Smithiak. We'll see if that's possible. IMO, Wade Phillips is the one in the tough spot.

i was hoping last season when we were out of contention they would of give Dickerson a Shot. the only time he was on the field was if it was a running play.

And my whole point is, we have a lot of positions to feel. How good do you feel that knowing a majority of our starters will likely be from the draft our from what we have right now.

There's two different issues here - letting them go, and replacing them. Letting them go doesn't concern me a bit. Being smart enough to craft a defense rather than just a roster of defensive players does - but you don't say "Let's keep some sub-par guys around because we are too incompetent to replace them with guys who are better".

The Texans aren't very good and if you hold on to average players to long , you stay average . The problem is the offense is above average but they stink in drafting defensive talent .

I'm not convinced that drafting was necessarily the problem. I think it was the defensive coaching combined with the drafting.

If you could sign anyone you want, would you be signing A.Green, Eric Moulds, Ron Dayne?

Do you think...... maybe, these "free agents" would also have to want to come here?

& try to remember, there have been FAs who have taken less money to play elsewhere.

Orlando Pace, David Givens.

We signed Anthony Weaver & Antonio Smith to big money. Schaub got a pretty sweet deal. Sage & DanO got big money (for back-up QBs). We signed Jordan Black to starter money. Jaques Reeves wasn't cheap.

I don't think money has been the issue. We give it to scrubs.

I think the problem has been that no one wants to play for a loser.

IMO, Smith has to do a better job of selling the Texans as the team of the future.

Big name players do not like to be one of the only big name players being pursued. Ego may be massaged initially. But smart big names know that they need support to peddle their maximum skills, and that if you're bumping elbows with mostly scrubs, the ego trip of being the big fish in the pond quickly fades to reality.

I think about things this way the vets might be past their primes and the time for them to leave has now come but if they are all replaced by rookies then this team will probably be just as bad.

Just because they didn't get a deal done before the deadline doesn't mean those players won't be with the Texans at camp next season. They are considered low priority at best, which means someone like Diles may be re-signed for depth behind Cushing/Ryans. I could see that as I think he's a good guy and passes Bob's character test, but if he is signed it won't be for much.

I'm not sure what happened to Diles last season. He played very well in '08 and '09. Last year was ugly, though. I think the reason he won't have an opportunity to redeem himself is because Wade realizes they need more athleticism at LB. Especially given Demeco's limited athleticism, whomever lines up next to Demeco needs to have good speed and the ability to drop effectively in coverage. Sharpton and Adibi both qualify in that regard. And, it appears that Wade is pretty high of Sharpton. We don't want two linebackers that both run a 40 yd dash on the wrong side of 4.8 lined up next to one another. That's probably one reason why the pass defense has struggled so much.

If they look only to the draft to improve the secondary then we will defiantly be in a tough spot. We shouldnt even be considering the draft as a way to improve the secondary next year. It should be done primarily with FA. Go and get a quality vet S and CB and use the draft to build our front 7. This draft is loaded with front 7 talent.

But alas this is the Texans were talking about so we might as well prepare ourselves for moronic moves that will still be holding this team back way after Kubiak and Smith are gone.

I can see it now, we reach and draft a CB first then a safety in the second round, then a TE in the 3rd, going into next year our starting secondary will consist of 2 rookies and 2 second year players and we'll have another potential great TE that never see's the field.

After 6 games and on pace to set an all-time record for ineptitude on defense, Kubiak is let go and Phillips is hired as the new HC.

I've said this in another thread but I simply can't imagine that we draft another CB and go into this season with kiddie corners again. I fully expect us to be fairly active going after experienced corner backs and possibly safeties. And that doesn't mean just via FA, I think we could see us make some trades to get guys we want. I don't even expect us to start the season with Glover and Kareem as our corners, although with good safeties, they probably wouldn't seem as bad as they did last year.

Even though Prince Amukamara will probably fall to us at 11, I just can't see us drafting him.

I think we either go OLB or WR and I think it's 90% probably that it's OLB. I think that NT would be in the mix but none of the 1st round NTs that we'd want are going to fall to us at 11.

Kevin Walter lost what little speed he had last season. I'm not sure why. Maybe he can get it back. But, I agree that the Texans need to bolster the WR position. Fortunately, the free agent market is ridiculously strong in every area where we need help. Check out this list of probable free agent WRs:

Santonio Holmes
Sidney Rice
Braylon Edwards
Steve Smith NYG
Malcolm Floyd
James Jones
Lance Moore
Brad Smith
Jacoby Jones
Mike Sims-Walker
Santana Moss
Steve Breaston
T.O.
Legadu Naanee
Mark Clayton
Randy Moss
Sam Hurd

and others...

While there are some on the list that I wouldn't want the Texans pursuing, you can see that the market will be quite flooded. Grabbing quality depth or even a #2 WR won't break the bank. As bad as last year's free agent class was, that's how good this one's is.

yeah we will see. i mean i think Dickerson could be something special especially if he watchs and learns from AJ. BUT we need some help now so a cheaper FA WR wouldnt hurt. On the other hand we really need to worry about Defense in the FA market, Our offense is still more than capable as is IMO.

i'm sorry but with as many BIG holes we have in on the defense Ziles would of done just fine for us. That would be one less guy we'd HAVE to get and enable us to pursue MAJOR pieces like CB, FS, SS, WR, FB if we dont sign Leach. DT, DE Just other major things like that.

Just because Diles wasn't tendered, or signed, doesn't mean he's gone. It basically means the Texans think they are not in any big risk of "losing" him. We can still come to terms with him, and have him compete for a job in camp..... if there is a camp. It would make sense to me, to cut him at some point during the off-season, when we've got something better.

Sharpton may be that something better...... I don't see how they can think Adibi or Bentley would be...... but you never know.

Dude , use spell check ..... this post made my head hurt reading it. :headhurts:

As for those players let go or left unsigned to this point , there is only one I want to see wearing a Texans uniform in the future - Vonta Leach.

Pollard and Wilson were pathetic in coverage. They were worse than horrible.

Jacoby Jones .... How many does he have to drop to prove that he isnt up to the challenge of being an NFL #2. Between he and Wilson , they cost the team the Jets game - One drops a gimmie TD the other one takes the worst possible angle on a play that set up the Jets final score. Jones still scares the shit outa me every time he carries the ball .... Just waiting for a fumble.

Diles had a piss poor season - he got what he deserved. How many times did we see delay and mis-direction plays give the Texans problems - too many. How about someone cover a TE or RB ? Diles and Cushing failed that test miserably.

Fill all their needs with superstars ? Give me a break. Thats asking just a bit too much when you need 2 CB 2 S at least 1 LB and a DT. How many teams have that many superstars total much less sign them all on one side of the ball in a single offseason ?

We are going to be in a tough spot no matter what we do. We have a 6-10 team and major decisions and improvements need to be made. That is a tough spot to be in.

So, I would rather go in to next season with some fresh faces and the D and have them fail, then to bring back the old guys who we know will fail. This thing can't be built over night.

If we can bring in a couple of quality signing, a couple fringe starter type players, and make a good draft choice or two, then we will have a legitimate shot at making playoffs. If free agency happens before the draft and we are able to sign a veteran OLB, S and CB, then things will be looking a lot better. Not re-signing some of our own players at these positions shows we are going to add some new players.

Not re-signing some of our own players at these positions shows we are going to add some new players.

yes but how new. like rookie new ???? That just don't thrill me to think about.

And for that, I wouldn't mind us taking a WR in the first round if Julio Jones fell to us. At least for next year, the best way we are going to win games is to be able to put up alot of points on offense.

Spell Check ! Bad gramar and spelling make for impossible reading.

That post wasnt even good for its entertainment value.

oh and buddy that is the whole point of the thread. Talk about calling the kettle black !!!! You said what my Opening post said. Well Done.:bravo:

would love some Julio down in the schoolyard but he is currently the 7th ranked player on our Big Board (just had successful surgery by Dr. Andrews on his broken foot so he is expected to make a full recovery in 6-8 weeks) but I don't want my  to get broken, a little different issue to insert a pin & call it good in a few weeks :mariopalm:

I clearly said in my post that we need to make a couple of quality FA signings along with some fringe starter signings. I even used the word "veteran".

I think you are stuck in the same mindset as Kubiak and McNair: Afraid of trying new things in case of failure. I really don't understand the mindset at all, especially when all of our past decisions have led to failure anyway.

I think I would rather sign one of the many veteran FA WRs out there. I'd be as excited as anyone if we did end up choosing Jones, but I'm not sure it would be a wise choice for us at this moment. I guess this will be largely dependent on what FA signings we make, and if they happen before the draft or not.

I'm good with this, but I would like to see a long string of players ready to go. If one fails, kick him out, move the next guy up.

i'm sorry but with as many BIG holes we have in on the defense Ziles would of done just fine for us. That would be one less guy we'd HAVE to get and enable us to pursue MAJOR pieces like CB, FS, SS, WR, FB if we dont sign Leach. DT, DE Just other major things like that.

He was a gaping hole last year. He missed alot of tackles and couldn't cover anybody. He is a guy that was more a apart of the problem than a part of the solution.

Yes. I would hope that we could find a couple of quality players who we know can do an adequate job, and then for the other spots, like you said, get some competition going. This will mean more cuts will be needed, and players such as Moulden will be removed. No more free passes on this roster.

but you don't say "Let's keep some sub-par guys around because we are too incompetent to replace them with guys who are better".

I'm sorry, are you new to being a fan of the Texans? (lol)

Note, no one player is the reason this team sucked last season not even three players but they still had to go.

Steak? I don't think so. We have trimmed the rotten meat off of our slightly less rotten meat.

How much do you think Pollard and Wilson contributed to the utter failure that was the Texans pass defense last season ? They both suck - Obama calibur suck - in pass coverage.

You wanna stick the same turds back there and expect them not to stink the joint up ?

oh no doubt. but the 10+ long receptions most that resulted in TDs. Where he was chasing behind his WR, after getting just flat out beat has nothing to do with Pollard are Wilson. Grant you that the plays probably wouldn't have been as long our maybe not happened at all if Pollard and Wilson weren't back there, but it was Jackson's man and he blew it. You can blame the Gas {wilson, Pollard}, But its not the cause of the fire {Jackson} :cutthroat:

hmmm. I do seem to get this alot. Maybe its all my knowledge that confuses people :kingkong:.

I'm Saying Pollard and Wilson WERE part of the problem, But not the source of it. Kind of like the last play of the season when Nolan Picked off that pass against the Jags. That was Man Coverage by Jackson and he was CLEARLY beat. If Nolan hadnt been there it was an easy TD. If it had been Pollard/Wilson instead of Nolan it would of been a sure TD.
