On 610 they said the Texans did something (around 7:45) and would come to it after break. Then they had someone on the phone about the Rockets.

Did anyone hear what the news was?

However, don't tease something after the break and then end up having an interview about a different sport.

No No, since they cant win or make it to the play-offs they are gonna start serving free beer to everyone who attends the game. McNair says this is to better the texans total experience  that way you wont know if they lost or not.

Due to the amount of beer that you've already consumed this morning, that's bound to happen anyway...

Why are we calling him a D-Bag? He was spot on last year and I can't argue with anything he said - he said Wade is good at what he does, we don't have the players and we will suck until we have the proper players. He also questions how Mario would truly fit into a 3-4.

He said our owner is happy with being mediocre and until change is made at the top (couldn't tell if he meant Smith or McNair), we'll remain mediocre.

I was just reading that thread yesterday (it was the last Vinny sighting). Matter-of-fact, if you click the link in my sig you can see it.

I found it interesting to read everyone's thoughts a year later. Many of the same folks defending Kubiak last year seem to be doing the same this year. Much of the criticism is the same, just with more vitriol and disgust now.

It's funny about Baldinger. He was one of the few national media analysts that praised the Schaub deal when it happened, and he just crucified HWWNBN, much to the chagrin of his loyalists. Baldinger was right the entire time. Schaub ended up being a fantastic QB, and we all know the fate of HWWNBN.

I liked Vinny's last significant post. People get all worked in a tizzy because the national media looks at our franchise as a bottom dwelling mediocre team, but it's the truth. There is absolutely NOTHING in the past 9 seasons to support anything but the fact that this franchise is mired in perpetual mediocrity.

I can only imagine a year from now and the same old song and dance. I hope not. I want Kubiak to succeed, for AJ and the entire team, for all of us as fans, and for the city of Houston. But, that being said, the fact that this team ended up 6-10 and the owner did jack squat about it with the exception of hiring Wade. One year later and not much has changed.

The reality is that McNair should have forced a change years ago, especially regarding hiring PROVEN coaches instead of FOGs that have proven to be inept and incompetent. This franchise gets no respect simply because it has never earned any respect.

According to Texans' Marketing, the team has the best medical staff
and facilites in the NFL. In 2011, we're gonna have Demeco, Cushing, and
Barwin playing as they did in their respective rookie seasons. Although
they'll start the season 5-7, at least they'll be the "most exciting" team

What do we base this on?

I know it's difficult for you guys to see me or anything I say as anything other than the most wish-washy fan. One minute I'm on the Gary-Train, next minute I'm on the Get-him-the-Fck-out-Train.

But I've seen this argument before, I've argued against it before, yet it still pops up, still gets repeated, and people still believe it.

Gary hires his friends, so the fck what. They all do. Every coach in the NFL, when given the opportunity will hire their friends.

& in the case of Frank Bush, you're saying that he's been proven inept & incompetent.

When? When did you figure out that Frank Bush was inept & incompetent?

Was it after the 2009 season, when we fileded the best defense this team has ever had? Is that when you would have fired Bush for being inept & incompetent?

That defense was as good as the defense Greg Williams (who everyone here recognizes as a defensive genius) fielded in 2009. Statistically Frank Bush's defense bested or equaled Greg Williams defense in every category except turnovers. & while that very well may be the "only" stat that matters, it isn't enough (IMO) to consider Frank Bush inept. & damn sure doesn't justify firing Frank Bush.

2010, he had shown to not be able to handle the difficulties & obstacles thrown his way. Surely he deserved to have been fired. If you wish to argue he should have been fired at the bye week, I won't argue with that, but anything else would have been premature.

Let me give you an example. Pete Caroll hired his buddy a year ago to run his offense in Seattle. Pete just fired his buddy after a year.

The news is here Houston team wins tailgating championship

FORT WORTH — Hundreds of fans crowded into Sundance Square to watch America's best parking lot chefs compete in the Bing National Tailgating Championship.

Or maybe they were just trying to stay warm.

Tailgating contestants started cooking at 5 a.m. Thursday and fans began gathering around 10 a.m. The temperature was 26 degrees at eatin' time.

When the smoke cleared, the Bull's Eye Tailgaters from Houston won the top prize of $15,000 and a gold-colored, fully functional gas barbecue grill.

It's a little glitzy.

The event was hosted by New Orleans Saints star Reggie Bush and Joe Cahn, the "Commish" of the Tailgating Institute of America.

The Bull's Eye team won the Houston semifinals back in November. The judges were former Texans lineman Steve McKinney, H-E-B president Scott McClelland and me. Ah, we remember those pork ribs well.

The Houston cookers defeated tailgate teams from Denver, New York, Phoenix, New Orleans and Seattle.

Do they even know what barbecue is in those cities? From now on, the winner of the Houston event should be given the national trophy to save everybody time and trouble.

The Bull's Eye team cooked (take a deep breath) brisket, jalapeño cheddar sausage, bacon-wrapped beef tenderloin, smoked Cajun sausage, beef ribs, pork ribs, Cajun pork tenderloin and chicken. Plus all the fixin's.

"We're a Southern state so we wanted to impress the judges with our volume of beef and other meats," said Jason Saldivar, who founded the Bull's Eye Tailgaters with his brothers Troy and Ray.

"This was definitely the coldest weather we ever cooked in. We were prepared with propane heaters, though. The biggest hurdle we had was timing everything so it would be hot off the grill when we served the judges. That's what we do: timing and execution."

But if you want anti-Kubiak Ammo, three teams with more difficult schedules made the AFC playoffs, one won our division, the other (Jets) beat us on tie breakers.

No, Gary didn't fire Frank.

McNair fired him, whether he did so directly or MADE Gary fire him (via the threat of being fired himself unless he [Gary] did so on McNair's behalf) is the question.

But to assert that Gary up and fired Bush is comical, TK.

And that "best Texans defense ever" was ranked what, TK? Top 10? Top 15? Or lower than that?

In each defensive stat category, in 2009, the best the Texans finished was a few stat categories near the Top 10, a lot between 10 and 20, and a few categories had us between spots 20 and 32. Not nearly good enough to be celebrating it as "Best Texans defense ever," but hey...a 9-7 record was celebrated by many on here last year at this time. So it goes with the territory, I suppose.

It doesn't matter that Gary fired him or not. Not for this discussion. The point is the 2009 defense bought Frank Bush another year. If you think not, I don't know what to tell you.

You're saying Frank should have been fired after 2009. That's just haterade & hindsight.

And that "best Texans defense ever" was ranked what, TK? Top 10? Top 15? Or lower than that?

Which Texans defense was better?

I'm using the Saints defense as a "standard" if the 2009 defense wasn't good enough for us, by your logic, Greg Williams should have got fired.

I celebrated the 9-7 season, our first winning season. I celebrated Matt's 4,770 yards. I celebrated AJ's 1,500 yards. I celebrated our top 10 run defense. I celebrated 4 Texans going to the pro bowl.
I'll celebrate it again if we can get to 9-7 next year, our second winning season.

I celebrated Gary's contract extension.

The first time we go to the play-offs, I'll celebrate. The first time we win a play-off game, I'll celebrate..... even if they don't happen in the same season.

& just because I say the 2009 Texans defense was the best defense the Texans ever had, it's not celebrating.

Frank Bush had no business being hired in the first place
and last year the defense was bad, just not historically bad like this year was

They also had Dunta last year and losing your #1 corner is never going to work out well for ya...don't bother telling the Houston 'braintrust' that though.

they are on the right track

Go screw yourself, McNair

So how is it that Bush was the same guy who fixed a broken defense last year making them more than respectable and now all the sudden he had no business being hired in the first place ?

How quickly we forget in the Not For Long League.

Im not going to make excuses for Bush .... that defense was horrible. We'll find out soon enough if it was talent or scheme.

It doesn't matter that Gary fired him or not. Not for this discussion. The point is the 2009 defense bought Frank Bush another year. If you think not, I don't know what to tell you.

You're saying Frank should have been fired after 2009. That's just haterade & hindsight.

You're right...almost. He should have been fired the day Wade Phillips was available.

Tell me if it would have been worse, TK, to have Phillips in here ASAP or during this enormously hyperactive time that we're living in right now (the period of time known as "Texans offseason," where all the hot action's at).

True to form, Bob is a gentleman and completely incapable of allowing anything more than a GLACIAL pace. I wonder why we start games so slow? I wonder why we're slow to acquire free agents, often losing them to other teams? Why are we so slow to let go of players who are not having success, often releasing them wayyyy later than we should have? Why do so many people in this organization get so many chances for so long of a period of time, in regards to NFL standards?

Maybe because there's a snail's pace elsewhere in the organization (as in BOB himself and his personality)? Yes, organizational cultures work their way into the fabric of many of the organization's departments and operations. It soaks in, especially over time and with enough influence from the boss man.

I like people who make their own luck, rather than those who think a check is going to magically come in the mail one day and solve all their problems. My dad got that government check all the time. The old joke says "Why is a farmer's baseball cap got a rounded bill on the front? From looking inside his mailbox for that government check." Bob has got a section of fan base out there that aligns with his way of thinking. I'm not one of them.

Guess what? I already know the outcome. Just because I "hang around to watch and see" is totally different than thinking there's the chance it ends any other way than the way it is. And how is that "puffing my chest out" anyways?

And what is so sacred about coaches that they can't be fired until the end of the season? I keep saying this, and it keeps getting ignored. Here I go, one more time: The NFL is THE shortest season in all of pro sports. 16 games. If you are an owner and you think your d-coord or o-coord is costing your team a chance at playoffs, why wouldn't you consider making a move? WHY NOT?

Because it's not enough time to make a difference? Whatever. It's never too late to show your players and your fans that you're TRULY committed to doing whatever it takes. And it would make some other coaches in the organization sit up and pay attention. However, the opposite happens: Coaches know they got all year. Players know there'll be no change until after the season is over. What a waste of time and money, IMO.

"Has it EVER been done in the NFL like that?" I don't know, but it couldn't hurt to try it one time. Spice of life and all that jazz.

I'm just saying that's not the way it is in the NFL. It's just not done that way, not bringing someone else in anyway. Fire Bush at week 7.... I'm good with that. Kick Rhodes in the arse & make him man up... I'm good with that. If that were your argument, I'd be agreeing with you.

Saying to bring Wade in mid-season... not very intelligent IMO.

Uh huh. There was a time, TK, when the forward pass wasn't allowed.

Mike Leach went into Lubbock, and for a decade he took his unconventional approach to offense and almost won the Big 12 and damn near got to Number 1 in the nation after beating the Longhorns in Lubbock. My college, WTAMU, modeled its program after Leach and has turned the Lone Star Conference upside down and inside out with similar success.

There are lots of things people can do. Was it Edison who said, "i know a thousand things that won't work!" meaning his few successes came only after thousands of failures?

"It's not done that way" is sad. It's terminal. Hopeless. And it angers the hell out of this fan. Washington D.C., too, does things a certain way. "We just don't it that way" sucks.

Being preconditioned to accept a fate is, at the core of life, "obscene" and contrary to what life should be like. I think this is one reason for the passion and zeal that is misread as being "blind hate" on here. What Bob has done, for 9 years, just angers and offends the senses of some. Not saying it's "the truth," just saying "some are offended by it." Different personality styles, etc.

Divergent thinking is what made America great, btw. There was a time when innovation was revered as being a pretty iconic representation of American values. We're losing that. We're accepting mediocrity. Status quo. Farming it out others. So when I hear someone say "It's just not done that way," I can't accept that. This country and its people are, IMO, built for doing things differently. So if that's the case, in this instance of why he could or could not fire a d-coord and bring in Wade the next day, then I can't accept "It's just not done that way." Because the way it's being done is not working, either.

The story of how the JEEP came into existence is a great lesson in divergent thinking, as well. It was an issue of NOT doing things the way things are usually done.

Is that all you have? Come on, Wolf. Bring the good stuff next time. Like I said, "It's just not done that way in the NFL" is not a good argument.

You can't switch to 3-4 during season and expect that to work.

They should have fired Bush after the Tebow game though if for no other reason than to show some accountability. Then they should have fired Kubiak the day after their season ended but by then the McNair-Bum-Wade-Pastorini PR assault was in full effect.

But we are on the right track at 6-10...whatever

Do you not recall that Wade Phillips said he has worked with all styles of defenses and that he can do whichever one he needs to do?

He could have used our 4-3 for the rest of the season. It's not like Wade Phillips only knows the 3-4 and is incapable of doing anything BUT the 3-4.

I envision him as being someone who the defensive players would have openly received in the midst of what I perceive to have been a disconnected and disillusioned environment there at Reliant day in and day out. To have had a legitimate d-coord come in, such as Phillips, would have been at least a great starting point.

If I were one of those much maligned secondary players...I would have been grateful that a person with real credentials was my coach the rest of the 2010 reg season. It would have been like, "Finally! Someone who can teach us and coach us and put us into better positions."

Maybe I just have too much faith in paths least taken.

Wow. Small world indeed.

I went to the WT-MSU game about three years ago, and it was Military Night there at the MSU stadium. I was VERY impressed with the pageantry that night. It was cool. The best "away game" environment in the LSC, for sure.

I just can't understand how Abilene Christian University continues to field a good football team every single year. Something smells fishy there, to me. Do you ever get that feeling? I mean, (a) why would anyone want to play football in Abilene, and (b) how can they have WT's number so often? Maybe the coaching is just off-the-charts awesome, and they are retaining a lot of Abilene-area talent?

That's the one team I can't stand to lose to.

I feel the same way. We may beat ACU in the regular season every so often, but they will always beat us in the postseason if we do. Abilene is kid of blah, so I don't get it either.

We are a military town (Shephard Air Force Base is just outside of town) and so the military is a big deal around here. An interesting tidbit for you: Our stadium is actually owned by the school district (WFISD) and leased by Midwestern. Awesome stadium though, the best seats are at the very top, perfect for watching all the action develop. Did you know that Dominic Rhodes (who ran for 100 yards in the Colts' Super Bowl win) went to MSU? Yeah...that's about the only success story we have. ACU has a ton. They're like the megapowerhouse of D2.
