I let OD and most of the FA's walk. Trade MW to Denver for pick # 2 in the NFL draft. Reasoning MW doesn't buy into playing in 3-4, he's due a contrct extention after 2011 and has been injury prone.

FA signings

Ike Taylor CB Pitts, He's a talented younger CB and is good in run support. He's played in a 3-4.

Paul Solari NT Mia, Big space eating run stopper this team has lacked for yrs.

Donte Whitner S Buff, Should come cheap has an injury history but is a good player that would provide a veteran presence. He would be a huge upgrade over Wilson.

Draft

Rd.1 pk # 2 Patrick Patterson CB/S LSU., most talented DB to come out in yrs.

Rd.1 pk 11 Robert Quinn DE North Car., Would've been picked much higher but had to sit out last yr. Just as talented as MW. 275lbs 4.6/4.7 40

Rd.2 Mark Herzlich LB B.C., He was a playmaker this yr coming back from cancer. He should be even better after a yr of regaining strength in his leg. Herzlich seems to always be in the right spot to make plays. Smart

Rd.3 Sione Fua NT Stan. Fua is very a good run stopper that could learn under Solari for a yr or 2.

Rd.4 DeAndre Brown WR Sou.Miss, Brown has all world talent, he had a big freshman yr and has been injured the last 2 yrs. He's a huge upgrade over Jacoby.

Rd.5 Steven Friday OLB. Va Tech. Playmaking OLB, Only reason he's here is because he's an older guy.

Rd.6 Chas Henry P Fla., Best P in the nation, has a huge leg, We never have to see Turk P again.

Rd.7 Eric Hagg SS Neb, Not a fast guy but definitely a playmaker. Reminds me of Jim Lenhard

I used Rob Rang as a guide for which rds these guys might go in.

The Texans would have to be out of character and be agressive. I dont see MW buying in and hopefully the Texans can use him to improve their secondary.

The Defense would look like this

DE A.Smith,Quinn, reserves Okoye,Bulman (who is the perfect 3-4 DE)
NT Solari,Fua, reserves D.Lewis,Mitchell
LB's Cushing,Ryans,Herzlich,Barwin reserves Sharpton,Friday,Bentley,Adibi
CB's Taylor,Quin reserves Allen,McMannis,K.Jackson
SS Whitner,Barber,Hagg
FS Peterson,Nolan

This would be a talented young defense. They would be a much faster defense than they were last yr. The ST's would be much better too.

This offseason is realistic IMHO, and would be cost effective. The Texans just have to be what they haven't been the last 4 yrs in the draft. ( Agressive and willing to take risks)

Ley the critiques begin.

Depends on who the new HC is.

Their defense would probably be better in a 4-3. Their LB's are terrible.

What do you think of the offseason and mock in particular?

I think with the sucess that Dumervil had they will stay in a 2-4, but you're right they may switch back to a 4-3.

In the offseason I would rather have Jonathan Joseph over Ike Taylor.

Other than that, I love it and the mock. Maybe Henery out of Neb. instead of the punter from Fla?

Good Job!

I forgot about Henery.

He would also be great on kickoffs.

Rackers making tackles on kickoffs scares me. He's getting too old for that stuff. LOL

first thing I would do is try & resign OD.

Mario is not going anywhere, I would like to see him adapt to being a 3-4 end. love to add Ike Taylor to secondary. would also love to get Peterson but that's just a pipe dream. Quinn should be gone by 11th pick, check him out @ combine, trust me his stock will rise. too early for Herzlich (someone has a rang crush on him) would consider him no earlier than 3rd, like to get him early 4th? Otherwise I don't like your DE rotation for a 3-4. Need to grap Paea or JJ Watt for other DE. Maybe Texans can trade Smith & Okoye they're the ones who don't fit 3-4 DE profile or OLB role. Good idea on NT position, would prefer Franklin, SF & doubt Fua last's til 3rd.

Overall I like it but have 2 issues with it:

1. Mark Herzlich, 2nd round is way to early for him, I think he falls. Teams will be scared to take him early due to the health issues. If he's still around in the 5th or later maybe I take a chance on him but for the most part I'd stay clear of him.

2. I agree with JB, I'd go after Jonathan Jospeh-CB instead of Taylor.

BL, Why would you re-sign OD. He's too big of a risk to pay alot of $$$$ too and I thought Dreessen and Casey did a good job. Graham may be good too. The OD $$$$ would be better spent in FA on the defense. IMHO

This was just senario for getting Peterson. I've seen mocks that had Peterson drop all the way to #10. What do you think MW's trade value is? If a team that's on the clock and needed a DE and Peterson was still on the board would you offer MW up in a trade I would. It is possible though unlikely.

I agree with you about Quinn, but I was going off the list in this draft forum (Defensive secondary thread) If Quinn isn't available, Then Clayborn might be a better option than Quinn in a 3-4 anyway. Point is a suitable replacement for MW could be found at #11. You could even trade down and get extra picks and select Watt later in the 1st rd.

I do have a man crush on Herzlich. He's a smart tough team 1st kinda guy that the Texans are currenly lacking. He obviously has a big heart and playing football is important to him.

But I will give you that pick and move Fua up to the 2nd rd spot and take the fastest OLB in the draft Moch in the 3rd. What do you think of Moch? He's really good off the edge. Watch the Boise St. game.

I prefer Franklin over Solari too. But after spending big $$$$ on Taylor in FA. Solari will be more affordable than Franklin.

Another guy that might be had on the cheap that would be a good replacement for Jacoby is Buster Davis. He's fast, runs good routes and will do a better job as a KR?PR.

2. I read somewhere Joseph is going to get franchised by the Bengals.

Owen Daniels has developed chemistry with Schaub that I do not want to throw away. to me he is our franchise TE & a Top 5 TE overall in the league playing in Kubiak system, which last heard has another year to make the playoffs, we need him. Dallas Clark always gets banged up too but the Colts are a far more dangerous team with him than Tamme.

Don't beleive something just cause you read it online in a nationally followed mock draft. Peterson is elite talent, elite athlete & is a big playmaking cover cornerback plus special team returner extroidinare. He should be Top 5, along with Luck, Marcell Dareus & AJ Green (left final position open, but Quinn would be in the running for that group too).

If Texans confrom to a Wade Phillips 3-4 scheme there are three things they need to aquire. A nose tacke, DE/DT (Antonio Smith/Amobi Okoye don't fit) & 3-4 OLB. Houston we have a problem. Picking 11th the top DT's to replace our 4-3 guys are gone, except as I projected correctly Stephen Paea who could be a whopper end in the 3-4 scheme or rotate depending on packages inside to nose. The one team we gotta look out for is Buffalo, they pick in front of the Texans & need the same thing. I'm really hoping JJ Watt comes out early, that way Texans would have the option of one or the other & Wade has his 3-4 DE.

The second round pick depends alot on who you can sign via free agency? If they can't sign a top rated NT they need to pull the best one off the board here, can't pass on such an important need regardless of bpa on the board. 3rd rd. on look for OLB like you mentioned. then we can breathe & address secondary, LB, #2 WR etc.etc. etc....

I also believe the Texans must & will sign a CB with experience. McNair needs to pull out his checkbook & write the damn check this time, regardless if he is overpaying or not. The team, both players & coaches not to mention us fans deserve it.

not to totally dismiss media mock drafts but here is a classic example I just looked up that came out today from Bleacher Report - http://bleacherreport.com/articles/561606-2011-nfl-mock-draft-complete-first-and-second-round-picks#page/37

Love their first pick Stephen Paea, but then they have Texans selecting JJ Watt with their second pick (44). Would love it, but cmon lets get real! Watts could wind up being either the one or two 3-4 DE/DT in the draft so all those teams will be looking to uprgrade that position, hell New England has two first round picks & they need a DE/DT, no way he gets by them.

Would not surprise me if Belichick calls up Rick Smith draft day & trades up for Watt, Texans move back to 32 plus selection 33 in return. would you do it?

Agreed about Daniels. But I wouldn't pay too much for a guy that has had ACL surgeries on both knees.

Also I agree with you on Peterson being top 5. He's an elite talent.

I would trade MW and a 3rd to move into the top 5 to get Peterson. Then sign a Vet FA CB and the secondary would be better than its ever been.

If you were to do that and then use #11 to trade down for picks 32 & 33 that would be the optimum position.

I've got to go, but when I get back I will play with that senario.

The Patriots get a potential pro-bowl DE/DT in Watt plus a franchise LT in Solder/Sherrod. Belichick might just go for that :polevault:

we need to revist the potential NT prospects. I've always liked Ole' Miss Powel too

I liked Powe coming into the season.

He lost weight and wasn't as dominant this yr.

He moves pretty good for a big man though.

I guess he most likely would regain weight as his body matures.

Baylor, Phillip Taylor, 6-4 340 has NT size. lot of people are saying Hampton NT Kenrick Ellis, 6-5 340 is rising up boards but I've never seen him play. anyone watch Hampton football? thoughts on Taylor?

I saw Taylor play in person at the Texas Bowl. He was a little better than OK. He didn't play up to his 2/3rd rd draft projection.

The DT that impressed me and was a man among boys in that game was Corey Liguet. He was dominant. There was no running the ball inside due to Liguet.

Liguet is 6'1-6'2 310 lbs but he has a real solid base. He could be a 5thrd pick. Texans Ratliff if the Texans get lucky. Phillips will find a good NT. He's found one everywhere he's been.

So take comfort in that.

I disagree with you and BL on Daniels. He's had to many injuries and Dreesen has proven that he can handle the TE duties for a much cheaper price with Casey and Graham backing him up. I agree on Peterson, he is a great talent. I still think he might make a better FS than CB but I'd try him at CB first and give him the chance to succeed. Do you really think it would cost MW and a 3rd round pick to move up into the top 5, that seems quite high? I think MW alone would be enough and they might still owe us a later round pick. I like your trade idea though along with the #11 for #32 and #33. The #11 pick should give us alot of trade down options. This years draft seems to suck in terms of traditional 3-4 NT's but I like Sione Fua, and Jerrell Powe.

While I do agree with BL on the chemistry between OD and Schaub. If I resigned OD it would be to a cheaper contract than what he will probably get on the open market.

Who do you like better Fua or Powe and why? For me it's Fua.

MW and a 3rd maybe alot to move up to get Peterson. But Peterson is just as special as MW and you have to over pay to move up into the top 5. Would you do the trades?

Peterson will be a very good CB. The best thats been on this team since Glenn.

Peterson would be an all world FS. He has great hands, speed and would be a big intimidating FS. If he was playing FS for the Texans this yr. They would've won the Jag/Jet games. All of the times that you saw Wilson being a step slow to provide help over the top Peterson would've been there.

Peterson would be the best FS since Sean Taylor. IMHO

As I've stated above Peterson is well worth MW and a 3rd.

What worries me though is Phillips defenses dont seem to put much of an emphasis on having true ballhawks at the S position.

So if DeMeco comes back slow, has a set-back, misses more games & doesn't resemble the same player until end of next season you would rip that new contract up if you could?

Please, this is football its a contact game & injurys are a part of that game. Both these guys are worth their weight in gold, without them the Texans look like the 6-10 team witnessed in 2010 :kubepalm::wadepalm::toropalm:
