Raging Bull Tailgaters are repeat winners.

Basically, HEB Tailgater of the Year is not real tailgating. You have a specified amount of space for your tailgate. You need to fill that space with some sort of theme, lots of HEB signage done in a tasteful advertising way, and Texany stuff.

You will be asked to make food plates for the judges. Ken Hoffman is often a judge and doesn't like seeing whole pigs.

Be prepared to spend a ton of jack on it.

Not real tailgating?!?! Absurd. It IS tailgating. It may not be the premiere event that you're used to attending and I recognize that it has tacky requirements such as 'HEB products only' but come on... not real tailgating?!?! I'd be proud to win HEB tailgator of the game one day no matter how many times they give it out (and they give it out a lot). Tailgating's all a labor of love.

:chef:

Congratulations to norg for winning.

It is certainly an honor.

To clarify, what I am meaning to say is to win the Tailgater of the Year, you have to do things differently than a normal tailgate.

It is like those tailgater shows on the TV--where they plate up all this foo foo food. That's not normal tailgating.

Tailgating is about hanging with your friends. It's not about going broke to impress the judges, or moving your tailgate away from your buddies for a week.

If you intend to win, you need to put on a show. A theme. Crazily over the top food and a good setup that fits the prescribed space. Remember, most of the judges are old, so don't do things that offend old people, like having the music too loud.

I appreciate the clarification. It really wasn't the best choice of words.

One may feel that competition waters it down some but cooking/warming food up outside at Reliant on GAMEDAY... is tailgating anyway you look at it. Who's to say that the group who won aren't hanging out doing what they do best. The pinata wouldn't be the same if it wasn't Joe Texan hosting now would it? Heck! I know plenty of tailgates that don't have a lick of food... just loads and loads of alcohol.

Tailgate Warriors is a silly show but it definitely has piqued my palette selection. I believe that Raging Bull did a Chocolate Penalty cake from that show for their tailgator competition in yellow lot a few weeks ago.

HA! HEB tried to talk Texan Mojo in taking their lame ass award many times. We've told them to buzz off so many times since 2002 that I've lost count. By now, the people in the little HEB golf carts know better than to even ask. On top of that, even if we won, the last thing we would EVER do is abandon all our friends in the Yellow Lot and move to the Blue Lot for the last game of the year.

It is real tailgating. The competition for Tailgater of the Game...of the Year, however, has nothing to do with tailgating and is all about sponsor signage and sucking up to those sponsors. Period. We were invited to participate in the Tailgater of the Game contest once, even though we had no signage or anything of that nature. They let us participate. They go around and pick out 3 teams to judge each game. It was one of our best, most fun, most memorable tailgates we've ever had. Put on a great show for the sponsors, one with much more enthusiasm and spirit than the team that eventually won, but because we didn't have HEB and KILT signs hanging up everywhere, we lost out.

I've never been to the finals but I've heard that it is crazy ridiculous. Ice sculpting, cigar rollers, among the things you can expect to see at these things, not to mention food you'd be more likely to find on a cruise ship or fine dining restaurant.

If you're into that, more power to you. I'm certainly not here to tell people how to tailgate. Burgers, steaks, brats, cheesesteak and the like, a cooler of beer, and spending the day with family and friends. To me, that's tailgating just fine.

The little Tailgater of the Game contest they do, no, has nothing to do with the best tailgater. It's who can kiss up to the sponsors the most.

And again, I'm not trying to say there's anything wrong with that if that's what you do. I'm just saying that's what the contest is.

Oughta get invited to the tailgater of the year event then show up in a casual (standard / common man) setup the grill and cooler o' beer along with an "EZ-UP" along with Kroger items and "The Eagle" or "Arrow" playing. Would probably get the voter's choice... if there was one.

Damn the establishment, torpedos, and Texans marketing!

HEB can kiss the Blue Crews backside, we won third place two years ago and HEB gave us a 25 dollar gift card. Academy gave one too, HEBs card was blank and the stores told me tough its a blank card. It is all a political compitition for tailgater of the year and we already know we are tops in tailgating, Just ask the commish, Joe Cahn. I do believe he told me he will see us in January if the Bing competition did not disrupt his schedule.

When did this happen Joe? I didn't know anything about winning third place in a competition I didn't know we even entered!! Sure would appreciate an explanation!

Sounds like good advertisement for HEB and the tailgaters pay for it by spending big bucks to impress the judges.

I go there to have fun and spend time with my Texan friends... I don't care to have all the stress and spend my hard earned money to promote a company that clearly has a hell of a lot more cash than I do. We don't have companies who sponsor us and throw money our way, and I am completely fine about that fact.

Tailgating = fun and friends - not stress and work

And I am curious about that too Joe, I never heard about anyone over there getting into the competition and winning anything.

It was a couple of years ago and they came by and judged us, II think it was when I had the little HEB man. after the game the guy came up to me and said here id a 50 dollar HEB gift card for Yall participating I asked what place we got and he said he thought 3rd. He then said thanks for participating and left. I went to HEB and bought 50 dollars worth of food and went to pay for it and it was a blank card, no value. I still bought the food and cooked it up for our enjoyment. HEB can Kiss my backside I shop at fiesta.
