HOUSTON - FOX 26 Sports has learned Houston Texans receiver Andre Johnson will be fined for his actions Sunday involving Tennessee Titans cornerback Cortland Finnegan, but Johnson will not be suspended.

It is not known what further punishment will be handed down to Finnegan.

Huge news for the Texans because that means their All-Pro receiver will be able to play when Houston takes on the Eagles Thursday night in Philadelphia.

Any further disciplinary action for Johnson and Finnegan will stem from their altercation in the fourth quarter of the Texans 20-0 victory at Reliant Stadium.

Both players were ejected from the game.

Finnegan initiated the fight when he hit Johnson in the facemask seconds after the ball was snapped. Johnson retaliated and both players ripped each other's helmets off.

Johnson would land several punches before the referees intervened.

Multiple sources told FOX 26 Sports prior to the fight Finnegan looked at the Texans sidelines and said, "watch this."

Well there you go.

Had AJ done this to a respected NFL player, he would have been suspended. But since it was Cortland Finnegan, its all cool.

I wonder how many thank you texts AJ has received from other receivers in the league.

JM made a good point this morning. He didn't think the NFL would suspend AJ because of how it would affect their game on Thursday night. They want the Texans player out there since it is an NFL Network game.

I think the other points you guys have mentioned played a role also.

Please let this be true
I thought the loss of control may have warranted a suspension. I love what AJ did, but that was a world class beatdown but the NFL is trying to take this stuff out of the game.

If AJ eludes suspension, it's because of who he is and his huge amount of goodwill he has warned as being an exemplary professional. And I think he deseves but he might be a victim of circumstance

Hopefully the NFL will want this story to go away and just levy a heavy fine

Spot on.

I believe this gif is from Claude Makelele (a renouned defensive midfielder who could barely shoot, never mind score - who had gone 5 years without scoring) scoring on the final day of the 2004/2005 Premiership season, where he took a penalty missed, and scored the rebound.

Here's the first post on that page you link'd to:

"Hopefully this means Finny wont be fined also, i dont see how they can suspend him if AJ only gets a fine"

LOL. Wow. Talk about blind allegiance: "...i dont see how they can suspend him if AJ only gets a fine"

Uh, because "Finny" gets about 4 or 5 fines every season for that sort of stuff. The FACE PUNCHES to "Finny" probably made the NFL and its officials sit up and realize that their inability to ramp up dsicipline on "Finny" is what caused "Finny" to get beat like a ninny.

For his own protection, the league has got to start suspending Innegan. He's going to end up getting mashed some day if they don't.

Houston Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson and Tennessee Titans cornerback Cortland Finnegan have each been fined $25,000 but neither player will be suspended for their fight Sunday, a league source tells NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora.

Johnson and Finnegan engaged in an ugly confrontation toward the end of the Texans 20-0 win Sunday. Finnegan jabbed Johnson in the neck, leading the Texans wideout to rip off Finnegan's helmet and land at least two punches to Finnegan's head and neck him in the head.

Both players were subsequently ejected from the game.

This was Round 2 between Johnson and Finnegan. Last season, Johnson was fined $7,500 for taking Finnegan to the ground by the face mask during a scuffle after a play in a 34-31 Texans win.

"I wish that I could take back what happened, but I can't," Johnson said Sunday. "I'm pretty sure I'll be disciplined for it."

According to Johnson, Finnegan had been getting physical with him all game. The Houston Chronicle reported Monday that prior to the altercation Finnegan grabbed the attention of the Texans' sideline and shouted, "Watch this."

By God I think you're right. I haven't seen PTI in a long time and I forgot how much Wilbon and Kornguy suck. Wilbon went on to say he gives the Falcons a 6 1/2 on the "respect meter." (I'm sure his Bears are a 10). Later he said TCU is crazy for joining the Big East because of the travel.

Question: Since when did the east coast get so much farther away from the west coast?

I hope Asante is out for the game, or at least not his usual self. The Eagles secondary, while having the most interceptions in the league, are also giving up the most touchdowns. Seems like they take some chances, hopefully Schaub and AJ can bait them into some mistakes.

Not sure but the short week won't be helping Samuel recover.

Samuel was a limited participant in practice today and his status for Thursday is still up in the air. With Texans receiver Andre Johnson dodging a suspension for his fight with Cortland Finnegan, having Samuel in the line-up would definitely be a huge advantage.

Ditka was saying they fought all the time in the past and no one would even get ejected, and Carter was saying that Innegan deserved what he got because he did a big no-no and that was jamming the WR in the face.

All these other guys went on and on about how the NFL needs to set an example and suspend Andre and I remember Mike Greeny even saying that Innegan won the war because Andre will be suspended and that basically eliminates the Texans chances at beating the Eagles.

IDK...I'm just saying ESPN seems to always have a bias with me. No doubt in my mind they are all rooting for the Eagles to win so they can continue slurping on this Vick story.

Gonna be some fireworks at LP Field in a couple weeks... too much bad bad blood.

Not looking forward to it.

I'm looking forward to it, I'll be there...maybe it's me that will take care of him.

No doubt. ESPN's east coast bias isn't even hidden anymore. [Watch Steve Levy]

I have a fantasy ESPN gets competition one day so they will have to become credible.

Unbelievable. Michael Wilbon from PTI just said AJ should be suspended for at least two games. To add to his insanity he said AJ deserves more than the ***** irishman.

Me thinks, AJ should rip Michael Wilbon's helmet off, throwing to the ground like a little b*tch, and beat the crap out of him.

Me also thinks Michael Wilbon should shut the ***k Up!!!

So let's see -- guys who played the game are standing up for AJ and those who haven't are critical. Having NFL experience isn't the end-all-be-all for credible commentary and analysis, but on this particular issue, I'll take the opinions of the guys who played the game.

Notice, no one's heard of any apologies coming from Finnegan for the incident...............even to his own team.

The question that has to be answered is "How long will it take Goodell to wake up and start fining TEAMS with truly continual instigator machines?"

"On Monday, Fisher pushed for Johnson to be punished with a suspension because of his punches thrown. The league could possibly view both players as repeat offenders of their conduct policy."

Why? The NFL basically gave Finnegan the green light for bullying. You better believe he will be trying to injure Andre in the worst way. Just another fine for him. Expensive hobby but it's how he gets his jollies off. We all got our own thing where price has little weight upon...

I'm kinda with you Nitro. It's not that I'm NOT looking forward to it... bc I am, but I am really nervous about what might happen. I just hope there's no cheap shots and no fights. I don't want any of our guys getting hurt, suspended or earning a bad reputation. Let's go there and serve them a beat down, another 20-0 victory for the good guys. The Texans won the game and the fight... I just hope the Titans don't want to try and settle any scores.

<------- trying to live up to my user name.

The Tits play the Jags and the Colts before facing us again. Innegan is going to do something stupid in one of those 2 games and be suspended for our rematch.

You heard it here first.

I base my opinion that ESPN is east coast bias on 30 years of viewing displeasure. You said it's a tired argument, there's a reason for that.

I've seen effed up opinions on this board before, but if you really don't think ESPN is east coast biased your opinion tops every single one of them :spit:

No I don't think they are after AJ, in fact I think they love the guy also. In fact if there were rumors that AJ was going to be traded this offseason to say the Steelers, Eagles, Redskins they would be drooling all over the possiblity.

All I said was, it seemed like some of the guys (Greeney this morning...) was calling for Andre to be suspended.

Great point! If the league wants to put a stop to this they'll give the instigators double the punishment of the retaliator. I would think that would put a stop to Finnegans crap in no time

I watched First and Take and most of the people sided with Andre (I think all of them). Jim Rome and Trent Dilfer also did.

Yeah, agreed. I saw everybody on that panel side with him. Hell, even Skip Bayless said moderately intelligent things about it. (Cue the frogs and locusts.) I later listened to ESPN Radio and heard Van Pelt just lay waste to Innegan as the worst kind of player in sports, and more or less say any fine issued to anybody should be double for Innegan.

As an East Coast resident I totally agree about the East Coast bias. No doubt in my mind. But I was actually shocked (in a good way) at the positive comments about AJ in national media outlets yesterday. I saw NFLN, ESPN TV, and ESPN Radio at various points in the day and I don't think they were unreasonable about the situation.

Had it been anybody other than Innegan, maybe it would've been different, but this was so obvious that only the most perennially annoying talkers were the ones who thought AJ deserved more than Innegan. At least that's what I saw throughout the day.

To all those like Wilbon who are shocked and surprised that no suspensions were handed down by the league office, I say this: you are confusing your sports! This is the NFL, not MLB or the NBA.

I can't wait to drop the "I-Told-You-Sos" on my co-workers today, all of whom scoffed at me and disagreed mightily when I expressed my doubt that AJ would get suspended. Where they were all "Oh, he's definitely out at least one game and could get two or three....you just can't throw punches like that these days!"

"Oh, really?" I said. "Do y'all even watch football? Fights happen all the time but they don't get suspended because each game is so important in a 16-game season...."

Seriously, I don't understand where this uniform opinion came from that suspensions were likely. Can anyone think of a fight or on-field behavior (outside of the helmet-to-helmet types of hits) that resulted in a suspension? The notable ones I remember are the five games Haynesworth got for facestomping Andre Gurode with his cleats, requiring thirty stitches to Gurode's face, and the famous Charles Martin one-game suspension for body slamming Jim McMahon to the ground well after a play had ended.

But for a simple fist fight? This was not the first time fists have been thrown, nor will it be the last, and I cannot find any example of a suspension for said behavior between players in the competitive heat of a game. The Wilbons of the world need a reality check. Fighting is bound to happen in a game that involves guys pummeling each other for sixty minutes.

Probably from college football - A punch is a game suspension.

The one point of discussion that really brings my eye roll is the "think of the children/it sends xx message" from the overly dramatic NFL fan chipmunks.

Give me a break. Nobody anywhere will take what happened between AJ and Finnegan and the ensuing NFL discipline as an instructive life moment. It was a simple fist fight between two well-paid athletes, with one of them administering a well-deserved beatdown of the other. Nobody got hurt, and everyone was entertained. Much laughter was had at the bully's expense, and nothing else.

Just like Nolan Ryan and Robin Ventura, we fans will remember this one because it was so one-sided and funny, not because <fakeoutrage>the NFL did not send a message that such violence will not be tolerated</fakeoutrage>. Don't make it bigger than it really was. End of story.

I kind of agree with this. I will say though that when the video clips back to AJ and finnegan it is right when AJ is landing a huge punch and it even startles me. I think if you want to look at it as a 'protect our kids' side... it's a perfect teaching opportunity. I know that can be overused for a lot of situations but I think this AJ/finnegan fight is the perfect opportunity.

Teach your kids that fighting is not okay. These players are going to get fined because that's not allowed. There are consequences for your actions. But at the same time you have to stand up for yourself and then accept whatever consequences are associated with that. You don't go around being a bully picking on people or being rude or hateful. You don't punch someone the first chance you get. But if a bully is constantly harrassing you and this is the umpteenth occurrance of that, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. I don't have a son but I have a feeling that's what I'd be telling him. Don't start fights, don't get in fights, give him warnings, tell the teachers... but if the punk kid keeps messing with you then put the fool in his place. punch him square in the nose, tell the teachers your sorry and that you're ready to serve your punishment. But that kid will never mess with you again and chances are no one else will either.

Sometimes we just need to man up and quit puh-cee-fying society.

I am back to the optimistic outlook on the outcome of this incident. Plus I wanted to see how many words I could start with vowels in the last sentence.

I figure Innegan will either be suspended for our game, due to shenanigans during one of his next two games, or he will be very closely supervised when we meet them again. If he plays us, I would bet the refs will be watching him VERY closely.
