Texans receiver Andre Johnson found out today that the NFL has fined him $25,000 but will not suspend him for his role in the fight with Tennessee cornerback Cortland Finnegan on Sunday.

Johnson and Finnegan, both of whom were ejected for their fourth-quarter fight in the Texans’ 20-0 victory, could have been fined and suspended.

The NFL made a quick decision because the Texans play at Philadelphia on Thursday.

Note to AJ: No more fighting. It's over and done with. You stood your ground and made a statement. Now just go about the business of abusing him with your on-field performance from now on.

That is all. Carry on.

Wait!!! See second half of article:

The NFL has suspended Texans receiver Andre Johnson and Tennessee cornerback Cortland Finnegan for their fight in the fourth quarter of the 20-0 victory over the Titans on Sunday at Reliant Stadium.

Johnson will miss Thursday’s nationally televised game at Philadelphia.

The Texans, who defeated the Titans 20-0, were hoping Johnson wouldn’t be suspended, only fined. They reasoned that the league might go easy on Johnson because he has not been a troublemaker and because he apologized after the game.

Did they accidentally post BOTH stories they had ready to send out after the league ruling???

Nothing on espn.com and nothing on nfl.com yet.

I would think those two sites, especially nfl.com would have posted the information first.

I think two articles were composed, and both got sent. And somehow, the official release of the verdict (by the league office) has yet to be 100% officially published/released. The Chron has sketchy info and posted the stuff out of confusion and haste. Trying to scoop the story.

I hope he isn't suspended.

Mr. White
11-29-2010, 12:43 PM
The Chron is the only outlet reporting on it. I'm not buying until I see confirmation.

PFT usually breaks these stories and it sounds like they're still in deliberations. Here's (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/11/29/cortland-finnegan-told-texans-andre-johnson-hit-was-coming/) their latest.

A moment before Titans cornerback Cortland Finnegan and Texans receiver Andre Johnson fought on the field Sunday, Finnegan told the Texans’ sideline to get ready.

According to Richard Justice of the Houston Chronicle, Finnegan looked toward the Texans’ sideline and yelled, “Watch this,” right before the ball was snapped, and then proceeded to smack Johnson at the start of the play.

Although Johnson was the one who was really landing punches in the ensuing fight, Finnegan’s reputation as a dirty player precedes him, while Johnson’s reputation as a good player and good guy will probably earn him some points.

And the news that Finnegan told the Texans something was coming before the fight indicates that Finnegan knew exactly what he was starting. Which means Finnegan may be the one who gets hit harder by the league office, even though Johnson was hitting harder on the field.

EGGSZACTLY!!!

Premeditated instigation and history should land him some bench time. I hope that the NFL really looks below the surface on this one.

Not Mclain’s fault on this…clearly what every writer does in down time is to prepare each possible story and then fill in the specifics later. I didn’t see the “DON’T POST” message…guess I could work for the Cronicle too!

Fisher, Finnegan make their case to leaguePosted by Gregg Rosenthal on November 29, 2010, 2:03 PM EST

Titans coach Jeff Fisher and cornerback Cortland Finnegan pleaded their case to the NFL on Monday morning regarding why Finnegan should avoid a suspension, a league source confirmed.

Fisher’s argument was simple: Finnegan didn’t throw punches, while Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson did. Fisher made the the case that Finnegan would have drawn an illegal hands to the face penalty at worst if Johnson hadn’t ripped Finnegan’s helmet off.

The entire sequence can be viewed at NFL.com, including the play before in which Johnson and Finnegan really started to battle. The two men shoved and jawed at one another, with Johnson eventually pushing Finnegan in the back after knocking his helmet off.

A league source says Johnson started to amp up the trash talking during that sequence, taunting that Fisher was going to leave the Titans soon, among other things. The source says Finnegan denies saying “Watch this” before the fight happened, as reports have indicated.

Frankly, what was said between the men is irrelevant.

It’s more important for the league to view what else happened throughout the game. Johnson said in his post-game comments that a culmination of events led to his explosion.

The baggage both players bring to the fight is significant. Finnegan has been fined repeatedly this year. As MDS pointed out, Finnegan’s reputation precedes him. He’s been warned that his next infraction could result in a suspension.

Johnson, meanwhile, was fined $7,500 last season for taking Finnegan to the ground by the facemask in a scuffle. On Monday, Fisher pushed for Johnson to be punished with a suspension because of his punches thrown. The league could possibly view both players as repeat offenders of their conduct policy.

With the Texans set to play again Thursday, we should find out what the league thinks soon enough.

PFT reports

Fisher is blind as hell if he thinks Fine-again didn't throw any punches. He threw 2 before AJ even got any off.

The jam to the face & then right before he rips AJ's helmet off he gets a little love tap in. AJ shouldn't be suspended b/c the little pee-on took the brunt of the punishment. He asked for it & AJ gave it to him.

Sorry if posted........

NFL Network's Steve Wyche predicts that Andre Johnson will not be suspended for fighting Cortland Finnegan late in Sunday's win over the Titans.

Wyche is speculating, but works for the league and should have a good feel for the way the NFL is thinking. Appearing on ESPN 101 St. Louis Monday, Wyche said he believes Finnegan has been "labeled" and "got some street justice" from Johnson. Finnegan is often among the players fined by the NFL on a weekly basis. Wyche predicts that Johnson will only be fined.

Well, that's all AJ had as well - illegals hands to the face.... about 3 times. He just chose to do it without the helmet on - wanted to avoid Courty getting a cut from the chin strap. That's some proactive thinking there.
