If Jon Gruden indeed leaves ESPNís Monday Night Football booth, it may not be for an NFL head coaching job after all.

According to Lake Lewis of Sports Journey Broadcast Network on his Twitter page, the former Oakland Raiders and Tampa Bay Bucs head coach will take over for the dismissed Randy Shannon at Miami.

The reported deal would be worth roughly $3 million per season.

Lewis cited a credible source for the news in another Tweet:

My scoop on Gruden to UM is from a credible source I respect who is a former ESPN radio guy and also another scoop is a UM great. No lies here...

Whether or not the report is true, thereís no question that Miamiís administration is looking to make a splash with this hire, and Gruden would give the Hurricanes a fiery, offensive leader ó essentially the opposite of the ousted Shannon.

It obviously seems to be too soon for Miami to have a replacement for Shannon set in stone, and the 'Canes are expected to have a thorough national search. But at the very least, could Gruden be the top contender for the opening?

I don't think the Gruden bandwagon is going to get a whole lot of steam this offseason. Of course, it might all be moot if Kubiak saved his job on sunday :spit:

I like Gruden a lot, to be honest, but I don't want him to be HC in Houston. I just don't see it. Interesting move to The U... I could see him being a great recruiter.

Jerry Jones said a couple weeks ago that he already had Super Bowl winning coaches calling him about the HC gig. Did it ever come out that it was Gruden? I'd be betting my money that it was JG calling and asking. lol

ESPN football analyst Jon Gruden said Sunday night that he isn't leaving ESPN.

"I am committed to Monday Night Football and to ESPN," Gruden said in a statement. "I enjoy working with Mike, Jaws and our entire crew and am just trying to get better at this job."

Earlier Sunday, the South Florida Sun Sentinel, citing a University of Miami source, said Gruden initiated talks for the Hurricanes' open coaching position.

Miami fired Randy Shannon on Saturday night, hours after Miami lost to South Florida in its regular-season finale. The Hurricanes fell to 7-5, still have yet to play for an Atlantic Coast Conference title and lured only 26,369 fans -- many of them rooting for the visitors -- to Sun Life Stadium on Saturday, the smallest home crowd since Larry Coker's last home game in 2006.

The Associated Press, citing an anonymous source, reported that Gruden, the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach, is atop Miami's wish list to fill the position and that Gruden received "parameters" of an offer from the Hurricanes.

But really the important information here is that Peter King is a dog.

I remember being a kid, watching college football, and I thought Miami was going to rule college football forever.

They were bigger, stronger, faster, meaner, and hungrier than anybody else. And as a college kid, you were playing in MIAMI. Beaches. Cool city with a party-type vibe. And a virtual gateway to the NFL once you finished.

Now? They are a shell of their former self. The stadium once held its full capacity of rowdy fans on gameday. Now? Virtually empty.

Kinda' weird. You'd think that after the big run they had so long ago, they'd somehow manage to get back there again. It's been a loooong time.

I think Gruden should have taken the Miami $3million if offered.

Yep. Also, think about how many current and former NFL players are Miami graduates. It's mind-boggling. And, a lot of former Miami players ended up being flat-out NFL superstars.

They need to get that program back on track.

If Gruden becomes the HC at the U, they just got themselves a Texas fan right here...

I would LOVE to see Gruden coaching the U and get them back to where they once were...

Not me. Miami has typically breeded out some of the most obnoxious and jerk off players for years. That's a big reason why Coker couldn't keep that program in check. To many scumbags on that team and in the 90's when Johnson was there they were living like rock stars far beyond what a college athlete is supposed to. They breeded out some quality guys like Ray Lewis, AJ, Ed Reed, Reggie Wayne and a few others, but for the most part Miami has always had some most of the scummiest guys playing for them. I could care less if this school ever gets back on track honestly. They will though. They just need the right guy to go in there and bring back their glory. Gruden would have been perfect for that, and I'm glad he turned that down. I'd rather him take a HC gig again and at least be around when the Texans hire again if they ever do.

For this reason only, do I want Gruden to go to Miami and put King in his place.
