View Full Version : the Offense

We got a lot of stuff going on what with the Defense mucking up the game but truthfully Kubiak is an Offensive Guru right? If that is the case why can we not score in the first half, why do we make so many mistakes on offense. This team is just no good all the way around and with that being said it has to be the Coaching. The coaches never have the team ready to play, we must always warm up in the first half just to try to catch up in the second half. It has been said before that we lack a sense of ergency, the fire that burns inside a winner is not even smoldering. That to me spells COACH and Kubiak is the head coach. I know the Defense is the worst in the league but I am willing to bet the Offense is the worst in the league in the first half. Just trying to throw around the reason for the serious decline of our football team.

I think Gary is allowing his OC to run the first half and by the half , Kubes has to step in with adjustments. I could easily be wrong on this, but let's see if scoring goes up in first two quarters.

I think a lot of what we do in the first half is so we find success later in the game. All the misdirection runs and bootlegs only work if we are constant in our approach. I think that's a big reason why we may be "slow" to start and then we capitalize later on the defense overpursuing.

I do wish we would run more in the beginning of the game. Our run blocking is doing a very good job and Foster is amazing.

I agree to a point but if the Jets mantain gap integrity and take away the cut back lanes we'll see Arian getting stuffed, much like we've seen before. If they do overpursue then he's game on. IMO

I think what we are seeing is a coach trying to "fix" his offense. Last year, our biggest problem was running the ball & red zone scoring. We moved the ball with ease, regardless what Qtr it was, between the 20's. When we got to the red zone, our offense would become the bumbling bears.

I think he may have deduced a level of anxiety on our team, that leads to the mistakes we always seemed to make. It's a quality of a young team.

This year, the bumbling has been greatly reduced, & we've become much better in the red zone. But we're much more deliberate & slow to "start."

That pass to Dressen at the end of the game is a prime example of that anxiety. Schaub is a smart QB, but we were too far away for a field goal attempt & that 8 yards wasn't going to do squat for us. He should have threw it away, & let Turk (who had a bad game) punt it away. I think it was a mental lapse on his part. Dressen is a smart football player. He's trying to get more yards, thinks he is going to win the game....... relaxes just a little, ball on the ground.

We're halfway through year 5, so don't take this as any kind of defense for Kubiak, we should be through most of this already, especially on offense - the more mature half of the team.

Shaub hasn't been terrible but he hasn't been good either. You would think Kubiak would know that by now and try to establish the run first instead of coming out pass pass pass.

 Joe, Joe, Joe.... *sigh* Thats BS!!! It really doesn't matter when the Texans score. Many teams don't reel off 3 drives of 80 yards in a game let alone a half.

The Texans rank 10th in points per game offensively, period..... What's offensive is the defense. They are ranked #2 (meaning 2nd worst) with regards to points allowed per game @ 28.6. That's horrible.

Like I said in another post, the offense is far from perfect, but the least of this teams worries at this point.

It is a culture problem at 1 Reliant Park and it starts at the top and filters down. I was listening to Charlie Pallilo and he made a good point about the next hire(s).

Either you have an experienced proven GM and rookie HC or you have an inexperienced GM with a proven HC. You never should hire first timers for both.

I didn't hear that, but you know what? That completely makes sense. Don't have rooks in both positions.. Pallilo pulls one out of his ass once in awhile. :fingergun:

Our defense has just been offensive.

A failed offense puts up 0 points in the first half. A failed defense allows 21 points in the first half.

That same offense can put up 21 in the second half, & all is forgotten. That defense can only allow 10 points.... & they're still a failure.

I'm really not seeing a difference, IMO, they both failed.

Yep, the reason why people are talking about the offense more now is because they're tired of talking about how bad the defense is, because basically everybody already excepts that nothing is going to change and there aren't any answers on the horizon. While the offense, hasn't been as big of a problem......the offense has still been a problem. Despite the great stats......alot of that great offensive production was put up against teams that went into prevent defense when they were already up well more than multiple scores.

Our stats are empty, we can completely disappear for entire halfs (and there was no bigger example than last Sunday....and the Jags defense has been just about as bad as ours) and the offense seems forced, there's not a hole lot of rhythm.

The second WORST defense in points allowed, averages giving up 28.6 (which is worse than the 3rd ranked 2-7 Cowboys).

The TOP scoring offense in the league averages 28.7 points per game

Read above....they put up those #s late in games when teams are playing with big leads.

I'm tired of stats....I can see with my eyes that theres something wrong with the offense and can tell Schaub has not adjusted well to his new O coordinator.

Good offensive teams are not NEARLY as bad as the Texans have been in the first half of games.....this just isn't about stats, sometimes stats don't tell the entire story. Now don't get me wrong, the offense isn't what is causing this team to lose games, but they have played a part. With the best running back in the league, they were still better on offense last season.

Exactly. There's no way the 29th ranked defense should be able to force a 3 & out on a top 5 ranked offense. We should be able to run the ball at will, not when they allow us to. We should be able to play pitch & catch with Andre & Schaub. With the leading rusher & the best receiver in the game, we should score at will.

The only way a paper tiger-like offense can put up top 5 stats, is if they've had to play from behind an aweful lot, like 8 out of 10 games.

This is it. Any fan with just a little football intelligence can tell something is just "off" with the team in all phases. It's like a V-8 engine trying to run on 6 cylinders. Yeah it runs. It may run half way decent on 6 cylinders but you just know something is wrong with it.

I think it's a little different. They are both equally offensive if you ask me. The offense has the ability to make it not look so bad, by waking up & playing in the second half, playing against a prevent D. The defense not so much, can't take points off the board, can't take yards gained away (at least not in the same chunks it was put up).

Unless we all of a sudden got good at forcing turnovers..... then a great second half can "hide" an offensive defense.

Just because we're scoring 28 points to me, doesn't say we have a great offense to me. Especially not when you know we've been playing from behind in the majority of our games.

Indy comes out throwing the ball, a bad D can't stop them. Jacksonville comes out running the ball, a bad D can't stop them.

We can't throw on Oakland..... doesn't stop Denver, doesn't stop San Diego, doesn't stop Indy. When we played them, their TE was the games leading receiver, Gradkowski the leading passer.

We can't run the ball against the Giants..... they didn't stop Jacksonville, they didn't stop Tennessee. Garrard & VY looked like Steve Young against both the Giants & the Cowboys...... Schaub looked like David Freak'n Carr.

Something is wrong.

Whatever homes! My point remains the same. The defense sucks!
It matters not when they score, what matters is the defense can't stop Gilbert "anyway" from scoring. Don't put it on the offense as some folks have, when the defense can't stop a common cold.

I've mentioned several times, that offense is far from perfect.

WAY bigger problems than the offense, defense not withstanding. How did you like Matt Turk's act last Sunday?

The whole team is playing at a sub par level.

Offense, Defense and special teams.

The offense sucks, but I just cannot agree that they suck as much as the defense. I cannot agree that they are more of a problem than the defense.

Not with all that we have invested on that side of the ball. All of the changes we made 'to get better' over there.

The defense makes me want to spit every time I see them play.

I think the defense becoming a competent unit is a lot further away than the offense. I think the offense is pretty close.

There is not one consistent performer on defense. They all have sucked for a majority of the season.

Whoa Bill.....I'm not saying "The offense is the problem".....I agree with you that our defense is the #1 problem (by far) and the STs suck (where's all the big plays that we've been spoiled by over the years), I'm just saying that our offense has also regressed and is "part" of the problem...and they are. I'd love to see what our defense would look like if we could start a game with a 2 score lead...... We had opportunities to do that against Oakland, Kansas City, Dallas, Colts (Wk 1), almost every game we played this year, except Washington & the Giants.

Bill put the scotch down, I am saying that it is the Coach and not the offense, It takes a coach to screw up an offense what with his scripted plays. we go 3 and out almost the whole 1st half so it takes us 5 times on offense to get past the scripted part.

First, this is without Cushing & the Rookies first game...

The Colts first half possessions from Week 1
1 punt
2 punt
3 punt
4 punt
5 Touchdown
6 Field goal

Texans first half possessions
1 Field Goal 3-0 Texans
2 Field Goal 6-0 Texans
3 Touchdown 13-0 Texans
4 Interception 13-7 Texans
5 Punt 13-7 Texans
6 End of half 13-10 Texans

Second half-----------
Colts:
7 punt
8 Fumble
9 TD
10 TD

Texans:
7 Touchdown 20-10 Texans
8 punt 20-10 Texans
9 Touchdown 27-10 Texans
10 Touchdown 34-24

We allowed 24 points and over 400 yards of offense. But in reality, that wasn't a bad game against the Colts.

What I'd love to see is what our offense would look like if the defense forced more turnovers....

In The Giants game, we forced a punt, & two INTs in back to back to back possessions.

We needed the points, because we were down 24-3. Our offense got 7 points off those 3 series, and that's only because our defense put them on the 17 yard line.

Offense is what we do, no one should be able to stop us. We got Andre, Owen, Walter, JJ, Foster, Dressen, Casey.... Ward, Slaton...... Schaub.

But we couldn't cross midfield against the Giants or the Cowboys. Jacksonville & KC had us stymied for big portions of the game. Washington's defense is right there with us at the bottom of the league...... how did that game go for us????

We are way, way overrating our offense, or there are some major problems, major growing pains, something.

If we had last years offense, this defense would look much better.

Maybe someone else heard this, but on 790AM around 10 AM it was mentioned that the 2010 Texans currently are ranked 28th in points scored in the first half. It was also mentioned the Texans have the honor of owning the 3rd worst defense in the last 40 years.

A couple of things that come to mind.

- The 15 scripted plays Kubiak sticks to at the start of each game needs to be switched up or, preferably, dumped altogether.

- Kareem Jackson might look bad out there, but he doesn't look like the 3rd worst defense in the last 40 years all on his own.

This team is beyond needing just coaching changes. We need some cultural changes most of all.
