Interesting....
We told you last week that the nuclear option of Greg Davis staying coupled with Will Muschamp leaving was thought to be unlikely. Today’s conversations with our people now tell us Davis’ departure at this point is a certainty. It’s definitely happening and most likely sooner than later. He had lost approval from other members of the staff a long time ago, Bill Powers and the big money donors had jumped off the train shortly thereafter, but most importantly, Mack Brown has lost confidence in Davis as well. So Davis is done according to what we’re hearing, and now it’s a matter of transition planning.
Here’s what we were told today. If Mack Brown drags his feet and makes a decision without Will Muschamp’s buy-in, Muschamp is gone. Our source claims that would happen before signing day. “He’d be out so fast it would make your head spin. He and Applewhite.”
Where’s the push going to come from if Mack hesitates?
“There are a couple big money donors who have had a no-confidence vote for Davis for some time so there’s that. Also, President Powers is a huge Muschamp fan. He likes the thought of bringing in some energy, but more than anything else, he doesn’t want to be the one to kill the golden goose. We have the TV deal to worry about, and Mack’s already agreed to step down at some point. That right there is leverage enough, but the behind the scenes legal problems give the change-hawks even more leverage. That, plus the miserable season, gives Mack plenty of cover for his ego to make changes.”
What about Mack and the huge buy-out if he decides to balk at making changes?
“That’s the tricky thing. No one is going to force Mack out, but if Mack did refuse to give Muschamp significant input, Will would be gone which would piss off the big money guys as well as Powers. Mack’s savvy enough to know better, but I suppose if he did burn those bridges, we’d know that his ego was indeed getting in the way.”
So what are your thoughts on who goes and stays? Who are the replacements?
“Everyone’s gone except for Applewhite, Giles, and Akina if Will had his druthers. He hates the environment he’s coaching in at this point. Most of the coaches have little energy and none have any fresh ideas on how to right the ship. He’d almost certainly bring in guys that want to make a personal investment and build something instead of resting on their laurels. He wants guys that can recruit and will recruit. Currently, there are precisely two guys on our offensive staff that really hit the recruiting trail. That’s ****ing embarrassing.”
“As for a system, don’t make a lot out of what Muschamp said about desiring a power rushing attack. He’s perfectly willing to be multiple and implement whatever style scores points. He’s not married to a system, he just wants to win. We’ve talked about S&C coaches and defensive coordinators he’d bring in if Mack hung it up, but he’d take Brian Shaw to Gus Malzahn and anyone in between as OC if it meant we’d score 40 every night.”
