He runs a 3-4. But a good defensive coach is a good defensive coach. It wouldn't take much turnaround in the offseason to convert us to a 3-4. We'd need to find a big NT and another linebacker or two. Mario can stand up or drop into a 3-pt. Cushing would excel.

Don't think he does, but does it really matter? I know we'd have to change a lot of guys roles and draft towards it but it really cannot get much worse at this point.

Yeah it matters...

If Kubes is still the coach, then it matters...

He came in and immediately switched us from a 3-4 to a 4-3...

Don't see him going back to a 3-4 anytime soon.

But hey...stranger things have happened...

Considering that Demeco is out for the season, would it really be too far outside the box to consider converting to a 3-4? It's not like we are getting much pass rush with 4 guys on the line anyhow.

yeah, it matters big time.
we don't have a massive DT to anchor the middle.
we don't have speed rushers at DE like you need in a 3-4.
our OLBs aren't suited for a 3-4.

and as bad as we're playing D now, do you reeeeeally want to bring in a new philosophy and have them THINKING instead of reacting.

oh yeah, it can get much worse.

News flash. The Texans defense is 32nd in the league out of 32 teams. So no. It really can't get much worse. It really can't.

Yeah it can get worse. Instead of being the worse team by a big margin, we could become the worse team by a huge margin.

Right now we are able to do enough defensively to allowus to win when our offense lights up the scoreboard.

I'd hate to see a defense that we can't win with even when we score 28+.

Wade freakin' Phillips ? Have you ever noticed a person that just exudes "loser" ? I know, I left myself wide open. Wade is NOT the answer and I cannot BELIEVE one would not read into his pysche, were he let go by the Girlz. We need a broken man, like we need to get rid of Mario. YES, there are coaches in the NFL that are GREAT assistants, or co-ordinators, but seriously.....

Yeah I know the differences between a 3-4 and a 4-3.

I really meant after the season though. Does anyone believe Wade Phillips or Frank Bush going to get fired in the middle of the season? Jerruh isn't one to fire guys in the middle of a season and the Texans FO has been the same.

But if this continues and the Texans get into the playoffs they REALLY need to get a new DC. Even if Wade is available and he only wants to run a 3-4 I say you let him do it.

The only guy I'd be worried about not adjusting is Mario, can he drop back consistently? I'm not worried about Cush or Meco adapting to that...especially Cush. In fact I think Cush would benefit from it.

As far as the DTs that's the one big thing we are missing, hopefully that would be addressed though.

wade's a proven commodity with a winning pedigree, i dont think you can say no if he wants to come here as a coordinator. that being said, i'm willing to bet he'll have a head coaching offer.

as for personnel, wade can coach the 43 regardless (especially in a 43/over) and we arent that far from a 34 defense anyways. we actually run 34 at times already. obviously a nose tackle would be the key component, but otherwise we're versatile enough to handle the formation. the biggest hurdle IMO would be convincing mario to play DE in a richard seymor type role. sure he can stand up and rush, but i honestly think moving inside will be an improvement for him while guys like barwin & cushing are better suited to play rush OLB. mario and okoye are double teamed as is and can generate pressure, okam's already a backup nose, smith's better on inside gaps, and cody can slide around. pollard would be better off with more aggressive assignments, diles would be better protected at inside weak, and ryans is plenty capable to shed blocks at inside strong. with bigger tackle oriented cornerbacks, we're actually more suited for the 34 defense in our backfield (in my opinion).

to be honest, and i've been working on this analytical process for a few weeks now, i think we may be better off switching to a 34 fairly soon - as early as next season.

A 3-4 requires much more depth at lb than we have. With Demeco out we are short for even a 4-3. We only had 4 active lb's today.

So, you are saying that if the team makes the playoffs,at THAT moment you are willing to completely change the philosophy for the team Defense?! Really? You do realize that the Texans are probably not going to be a top 2 seed and it will likely come down to the last week or two of the season to clinch a playoff berth. So, you would be willing to give our team between 1-2 weeks to completely switch philosophies?!

No. The players will be completely confused have have no clue where to go. There is a reason it takes an off season to get everyone on the same page.

And Romeo now in Cleveland (excluding his recent game of course) most if not all Head Coaches were very good coordinators.

I sure hope it happens personally (That's if Kubiak fails to make playoffs and is fired before...) Yeah the players will take their lumps learning and adjusting to it but at this rate the Bush led defense has been horrible...and it's shown no signs of progress in fact it seems to get worse every week.

No, you misread what I said. Right before that I said "I really meant after the season though." The only reason I mentioned the playoffs because if we miss the playoffs there is a chance Kubiak may be fired and so hiring a new DC won't matter because we'd need to hire a new coach first.

I thought this discussion was about after the season not during. Both the Cowboys and Texans are unlikely to fire anyone in the middle of the season, their franchise histories show that.

I am glad you mean after the season though. Next year, its worth considering. Not now.

Every single time this subject comes up I see the same argument which basically comes down to "We don't have the players to convert to a 3-4 and do you really want to risk getting worse while we take the time to acquire them".

It's a legitimate concern but I think it's short sighted and overlooks one simple fact.

When a defensive coordinator is hired who is capable of doing the job well and who understands what he's trying to do then changes like this are not multi-year projects that blow up in the teams collective faces. Stop sitting there predicting gloom and doom about a change because it takes Gary Kubiak/Richard Smith/Frank Bush 5 damn years to implement a 4-3 that works and realize that Mike Nolan can go to a team and have them playing competent defense in one off-season. Romeo Crennel can go to a team and have them stopping people in a year or two. Dom Capers can build a defense in one year as can Wade Phillips. Gregg Williams can do this.

Quit thinking "We don't have the parts" because a competent defensive coordinator (who we haven't seen in 8 ****ing years I might add) can make chicken salad out of chicken ****.

Pantherstang84 is absolutely right. We are the worst defense in the NFL. Changing what we are doing can't produce worse results. You know how it can get worse? It can get worse if we stay like this another 4-5 years because the powers that be are scared of hiring a DC who could be a viable alternative to their pet HC.

Unfortunately it takes parts to assemble a winning defense. Either big contracts, draft picks, or trades.

It took Denver trading a singificant portion of their team to get the personnel to run a 3-4

We also have pieces that are perfectly suited to the 4-3 (IE MWilliams). Converting your entire defense is not to be taken lightly

Yeah, should have been clearer with that.

Right now nothing can be done with it. We just have to roll with what we have barring some trade (which I doubt).

Thing is, I like Kubiak. I hope we sneak into the playoffs and he gets to stay around. He's done a great job with the offense, but we can't rely on scoring 30 points every game to win obviously.

The thing about Bush is our guys are never in position to make the right plays. Well to say never is too cruel, but most of the time, especially passing...no one is around the ball to even make the play. They looked confused and lost out there right now.

Also I will admit to not watching tape or being an expert when it comes to defense...but it looks like our defensive gameplan is the exact same thing for every team, not only that it almost seems our defense seems to play not to lose instead of playing aggressive and looking for the big plays on defense. Our defense reacts to what the opponent does instead of forcing the opponent to play one way or another.

Who said changes wouldn't be necessary?

Converting your defense isn't to be taken lightly but then neither is hiring a defensive coordinator. Go cheap at your own peril. Hire a promising newb and you see what happens. I would not advocate changing a defense with a Richard Smith or a Frank Bush at the reigns but neither would I be afraid to hire a proven defensive coordinator (and a number of them have become available while we dicked around with Gary's pals) and it is a fact that these men can find the players they need and install the defense that they run in less time than it's taken to prove that Gary Kubiak can't choose a DC to save his life.

Sitting here for another few years while Frank learns how to assemble our 4-3 pieces into an effective defense without any real guidance doesn't sound to me like "a plan". Hiring the best man you can possibly get for the job and then letting him do what he was hired to does.
