View Full Version : Are the Texans Soft?

HOU-TEX

I used to think Michael Lombardi was nothing but moron.....well, I still do, but he called the Texans soft last season. He began climbing on our bandwagon up until this past week. He's calling us soft again and can't beleive he was thinking otherwise.

Lombardi's a dork, but I'm kinda beginning to agree with the "soft" title.

I thought the Giants-Texans game could define both teams one way or another. The Giants have to prove they can handle a team with speed and a great passing game. Meanwhile, the Texans need to show they can handle success and play physical. This verdict was quicker than the Tyson-Spinks fight as the Giants proved they can run, dominate defensively and that receiver Hakeem Nicks is a big-time player. All this was accomplished while proving all over again that the Texans are soft and not ready for primetime. Why did I fall for them three weeks ago? I should have known better. I hate soft teams and the Texans are soft with a capital S.

YES, the Texans are soft on the O-line (Myers) and D-line (Okoye and Cody) though we've got good LB's. Kubiak has elected to go with lighter weight players on both lines with the idea that they'll be quicker, he's forgotten that big guys can be quick as well.

I would say no since we did go into Maryland and pull out the W against the Skins. But the Giants smacked us in the mouth, and we thanked them for it.

This team isnt soft. They are just bi-polar.

I really enjoyed watching the Jets defense last night. I wish the Texans would be that aggressive. :kingkong:

This defense is going to be soft as long as our interior d-line sux like it has. I mean seriously, that is the core of our defense, Cody and Okoye. Give me a couple of beasts in the middle of the line please.

Here I go again all on my own, swimming against the tide. No! This team is not soft. They have no self esteem which is a different thing and have few good games in recent history to fall back on when they need a gut check. They rarely have a full team to play together with although some individuals are very good; some are not. The O line is a weak area and are applauded when they keep Matt from getting killed. Schaub seems a bit gun shy after being hit hard and frequently, and is off a bit on his throws. AJ should be much better with another week of healing. Same for OD and D. Brown will be back against Colts. Two of our three CBs Jackson and McCain are not very good so far. That is a lot of things but not "softness". We have two pile drivers at RB who will get most of the reps the rest of season and hopefully Kubes will decide to use Slaton in a role more suited for the RB. We need a win against KC and the two weeks due to the bye and then we surprise the heck out of Indy and the world.

That's why we're taken to the woodshed by those guys. If we had a couple of beasts in the middle things would be different.

There have been games where we look soft. Jets last year, Ravens and Steelers the year before. Then against the Tacks in Nashville they tried to intimidate us and we punched those ****ers right back. I just think this team doesn't respond well when it gets down early to a good team.

That's why we're taken to the woodshed by those guys. If we had a couple of beasts in the middle things would be different.

My first instinct is to answer this with a sarcastic "But we can't have any beasts in the middle because they might misbehave and rub off on all the good kids Gary has brought in" but that's just not right.

We've been trying to find an answer to both the O and D lines since the day Seth Payne and Gary Brown got hurt and headed to the glue factory. We can't find that guy. The O line has never even had the "wealth" of players like that.

The O line is pretty easy I think. We need an OL beast as you say and Gary/Rick won't draft one because they think they need a very special guy who can be had later in the draft because he's small. What they seem to fail to grasp is that we need a guy who's reflective of that "Not the size of the dog in the fight but the fight in the dog that matters" philosophy and THOSE GUYS are snapped up early just like the physical specimens because you can't coach that shit. They need to get in there and BUILD THE LINES and not with late round sleepers or teen phenoms but with real men who have a ****ing animal inside them and who want to hurt guys wearing the wrong color that day. One or two of them and we'll be in business. Eric Winston isn't that guy. He's another quiet guy. Duane Brown isn't that guy. He doesn't have the temperment either. Too many guys are smiling on our line. Too many guys are happy no matter what happens in some games.

The defense is harder.

We passed on Julius Peppers for crying out loud. With our very first #1 draft pick we went style over substance and no amount of attempted do-overs seems to ever help. Mario isn't the guy. He's a talented follower and a part-time one at that.

Remember how the word was that once we surrounded David Carr with all the talent we needed he would be fine? Remember how we all kind of went "But if we have to put the perfect team around one guy why do we need him? Can't we just put Texan Bill in there at that point and win?"

Well, here we are and Mario needs help. Mario always needs help. Mario needs someone to take away the double teams and to provide some more pressure. Now of course he does need somebody on the line other than the shopping carts we usually line up next to him but Antonio Smith isn't chopped liver. He's a capable DE who can get to the QB. He should be doing much better than he is what with "Super Mario" Williams on the other side getting double teamed right? But he isn't. Maybe Mario takes too many plays off. Maybe Mario take too many games off.

Maybe if you have to build the kind of line it will take to get Mario enough "help" you'll have to ask yourself "Well then why do we need Mario?"

It's always tricky trying to say that one of your most talented players might be a big part of the problem but there, I'm saying it. Mario is overrated (we all kind of know that already) and if I had any faith that the Texans could do something with the picks they'd get in return I'd come out and advocate that they try to get as much as possible for him now, while he is still widely overrated by other teams.

Blow it up, start over. Bring in an established defensive coordinator who can and has built a defense that can get it done and give him complete control over that side of the ball as well as input into what players we target for him.

What are we really dealing with here? What are we holding on to that's so valuable?

DL Starters: Mario Williams, Amobi Okoye, Shaun Cody, and Antonio Smith.

Mario has trade value (but only trade if you can get value, I'm just saying he's not untouchable), Okoye has almost no value, a player just like Cody can be had every year in free agency for very little (in fact Amobi Okoye is on his way to being another Cody), Antonio Smith can probably stay and be built around. He's no Anthony Weaver.

LB Starters: Zach Diles, DeMeco Ryans, Brian Cushing

No real issue with these guys. If we can stay in a 4-3 then try to get the ihgh level of play they're capable of out of them consistently and only replace if you can't.

DB Starters: Kareem Jackson, Glover Quin, Bernard Pollard, Troy Nolan

Bring in a QUALITY veteran to pair with the better of Quin and Jackson and start drafting safeties before the second day for a change.

Our defense is broken and there's no point in getting all sentimental about what we never really had to begin with. Frank Bush was a mistake, in fact giving Gary any kind of control over who he has running the defense was a mistake. The guy running the defense needs to be someone Gary can work with but who could potentially take Gary's job if this guys defense performs so well that Gary's offense hold us back. Maybe then Gary would start coaching his side of the ball with a little urgency and the offense wouldn't come out flat as often.

But the only time they ever do this is when they've been humiliated and bullied and even then it's not like they have a history of turning it around against physical teams. The Titans are a physical team but the Titans team we punched back was without Fat Albert tearing up the middle. They were a bit of a shadow of their former self.

They seem to have rectified some of that this year. Lets see how hard we punch them back this time.

This next game against the Chiefs could be indicative as to how the rest of season will go if a team that lacks outside weapons at WR and a mediocre Qb lights the secondary up.

We just absolutely cannot let the Chiefs beat us next Sunday. Two losses in a row and the upheaval it will cause could very well spiral into three losses in a row after the bye week. We need this game badly and we need to upset the Colts in Indy too. We need to reach 5-2 and we've squandered our best opportunity to do it by losing to the Cowboys and then the Giants both at home.

Coulda done without the picture of the lardass guy, but the other pictures are classic!

I've tried to remain neutral when it came to Kubiak and Bush, but when I watch games like last night time after time it aggravates the hell out of me. The physicality of last nights game was awe-inspiring! The closest thing we've ever had to that might've been in Tennessee last year, but still not even close, IMO.

If we fail yet again this season I will shift from neutral into new 'coach over-drive'. Kubiak was extended, but McNair would have to realize how many fans will bail if he was brought back after another 'average' season.

All that said, I'm still holding out hope that we miraculously grow a pair and become consistent enough to win. With teams like the Jets, Ravens, Colts, titans and Chargers that have typically pasted us in the past....it's becoming harder for me to believe...

I think they are soft and arrogant. I wish we didn't have all the guaranteed sellouts and some blackouts. The Texans management has their money upfront so they don't really seem to care about what the fans think. I like Kubiak and Smith but they didn't do what I feel was best for the team by not tagging Dunta for one more year. Kareem would have benefitted from having him here. Even though I didn't think Jaque Reeves was a shutdown corner he is better than the 3 youngsters we have out there now.

I think the Titans are the exception to the rule. That's a case of "familiarity breeds contempt." We're more familiar with them than any other physical team because we have to plan for them twice a year.

Any physical team outside of our division is gonna kick our ass. It's been that way since Kubiak took the job.

Can't wait to play the Ravens and Jets this season.

What happened to all that talk and play the team had the first two weeks? Why is it so easy for them to lose so much spark and come out flat? I think it's time for AJ to start leading the huddles.
