View Full Version : Grade the offense and defense

OilerTexan

Each week I give the offense and defense a grade. (I usually grade too hard after a loss and too soft after a win.) Then I record the results on my weekly schedule print-out that is posted on my cube wall: http://skrovan.com/joe/texans It's not a heavily followed posting, but it seems very important to me. 8)

My grades for last week's game:
Offense:B+ Good run game. Did not put the game away well.
Defense:B- A few good stops in the second half.

If there is any interest, I'll start recording the average grades from this post. Thanks for your help.

I'm hopefull the return of Cushing will improve our defense, 'cause right now it sucks.

I laugh at the 9 idiots giving the offense a B. The offense gets an A and it's not even hard to grade. No AJ/JJ/DBrown and they still run with all 3 backs, make Joel Dreesen look like a probowler, no sacks, no turnovers, dominated a good defense. I mean seriously, I DARE YOU to come up with something they could've done better. Tarded ass B grade giving muffler huggers.

I gave the D a C. Average performance. This was a lot closer to D than to B as well. Played containment and pretty much got everyone except TE Miller. Decent pressure, Nolan with a few heads up picks but DAMNIT they get beat short over and freaking over again.

I gave the offense a B only because when they had a chance to put the game away in the 4th - on multiple occaisions they couldn't. Some of it may have been overly conservative play calling, but the execution was less than desirable. Otherwise, yes a solild A considering the guys that were out.

B and C, Offense was good but not great, and defense was better but still has a long ways to go to be good.

defense - d - only b/c we've managed to come up with the big defensive plays when we need them.....except for that cowboys debacle.

That's 15 (as of now) Idiots mister!

Sure, there weren't any sacks, but there was constant penetrataion into the Offensive backfield. When Schaub spends his day scrambling, it isn't because the O-Line is dominating. Our running game was outstanding most of the day, but still hard a hard time getting 1st downs in the 4th quarter. Matt Turk needs to have <6 punts for an "A" grade in my book.

The Defense? They had some great plays, but we're still making every opposing QB look like Elway/Mariono/Montana against us. Let's hope Cushing impoves this somewhat.

I give the offense a B . The running game was stellar as was the pass protection but the Raiders secondary did a hell of a job limiting the damage.
Had the Texans been able to convert on 3rd down at a rate higher than 46% I would have given them an A. Much of the Texans troubles on 3rd down was the due to the Raiders coverage scheme's. Have to give them some credit.

The secondary held the Raiders WR's to 4 catches for a total of 38 yards.
Held McFadden to 12 carries and 47 yards , take away his long of 23 and he had 11 for 24 yards , a 2.18 average.

The LB's - especially Diles were poor in coverage tho. Their TE had a real nice game and McFadden had 6 catches for 82 yards incliding a big gain of 43.

Considering the players who were out of this game , AJ , Cushing , Brown and JJ I'm satisfied with the W.

Kubiak managed the team well - even if the challenge on the fumble was upheld. That was a chance you take in that spot. Win and you get the ball at the 20 , lose and nothing changes.

don't know how to judge this fairly. Neither O or D played consistantly through out the game. Only good thing was when one was down the other came along and picked them up. Offense did well in the 3rd quarter and D in the end of the 4th.

I have to dispute that DB , I place most of the blame for the passing yardage allowed on the LB's ..... It was the TE and Backs that did the majority of the damage.

4 catches 38 yards from the Raiders WR's ? They may as well have taken the day off.

Offense - B

The running game was great but our WRs could have played better. Especially Jacoby who dropped a couple of passes that we really needed. In the 4th quarter, we needed 1 more time consuming drive and we couldn't get it.

Defense - C

In the end, they got done what they needed to get done. But they gave up 24 points. That's too much.

I completely agree with you, but I will add in the fact that the WRs dropped a couple of very catchable balls too. Nonetheless, our secondary looked much better then it did the first 3 weeks.

Offense a C...? Really...? 3-1 with a sieve of a defense and you grade the offense a C...? Lame my friend. You can't do much more than the O has done, even if Schaub is shaky. He is still on pace for 4000 yards and more importantly 3-1.

Defense: C - Only because it has done enough for us to win 3 games. If I could I would give it a C-

I gave the offense a B...... But I didn't know we were just grading this game. I thought we were grading the first Qtr of the season. Still don't know if I would give the Offense a B for the Raider game.... The Points were good, I like 31 points, the run game looked good.... everybody was going off... but we couldn't run the ball when we needed to & our receiving game suffered. Legit excuses for the passing game, I'm not saying there aren't.... but if I'm not grading on a curve I'd have to give it a high B, low A.

Defensively, too many points whether we are talking about this game, or the month of September. Too many points. I gave them a D.

This needs to be split up into different facets of the offense and defense.

Offense

Passing - B

The passing this year, to me, seems a little bit off. The routes don't seem quite as crisp and the QB does not seem to get rid of the ball quite as quick. Also only one big play over 40 yards thus far. But can't complain much.

Running - A+

Need I explain?

O-Line C+

Superb run blocking but very shaky on the pass protection. (11 sacks)

Defense

D-Line A

Besides the Dallas game, the front 4 has been more active than I have ever seen it. We are getting to the QB and stopping the run. Cannot complain at all. We should only get better there as the year progresses with Earl Mitchell progressing and (hey maybe Ogunyele gets used to the system and returns to somewhat of his old self)

Linebackers - C+

Linebackers are terrible in coverage this year. Every TE has a field day against us. But we seem to be pretty solid against the run. No turnovers. But the addition of Cushing SHOULD help this group out tremendously.

Secondary - D-

I think we've talked about the secondary enough to know why it sucks.

EDIT: didn't realize this was just for the raiders game.

I think this says more about the Raiders' WRs than it does about our secondary. WRs dropped way too many easy catches that would have burned our coverage.

Plus, with the RBs and TEs being so wide open, the WRs were not targeted as much. But watching the game again revealed quite a few blown coverages that could have been exploited by a better QB.

I'll upgrade my D to a D+, but I still feel confident in my grade.

Offense: B

The offense did surprisingly well without the presence of Andre Johnson and Jacoby Jones. We ran the ball effectively against the Raiders; however, the play-action pass doesn't seem to be there anymore. Is it because other teams are catching on? Maybe it was just due to the absence of Andre Johnson? Who knows...I sure miss those long bombs down the field to Andre for a TD!

Defense: C/D

We've consistently been giving away 24+ points every game. That needs to change; hopefully, Cushing's addition will offer a vicissitude to the defense that we so desperately need.

You are correct and they were at their normal conversion percentage in this game , I just felt like they could have converted on a few more of those opportunities.

Raiders game 46%

Season 47%

The New England Brady's lead the league in 3rd down percentage at 55% with the Miami Dolphins second at 51%. Thats a bit of a surprise to me.

First quarter grades.

No unit is going to come out and play lights out every week. If they all did that we would never lose or even be in danger of losing.

With the leading rusher in the NFL and with an offense that has consistently put up points had to go A there. Not to mention Dre being out for the last game, Brown being suspended and OD not being himself. They've been an A- or B+ IMHO.

Gave the Defense a C. They've been missing some players as well. But I like how the D-line has played overall. The pass coverage has been my biggest concern. They've made some stops when they've needed to and have come up with some big plays. I think they've been about a C to a C+.

The best thing about the offense Sunday, was the run game. But when it came time, when push came to shove, we couldn't pick up the first down, we couldn't run out the clock.

When the Raiders had to play honest, we were able to run on them, "impose our will."

But when they knew we were running... we didn't.

Same thing with the passing game, I know we were missing some folks.. but you don't pick up points, if you forgot to bring a #2 pencil, or didn't have one, or whatever. The point is you didn't have your #2 pencil, so you gets no score.

That's just my opinion by the way.

The Pencil Neck

Why not?

First off, remember this was just about the Raider's game.

To me, an A game means that very little could be improved. And in this game, we won but there was a lot that could have been improved.

Jacoby Jones dropped passes and in general, our WRs couldn't do much of anything against that Raider secondary.

In the 4th quarter, we had 2 opportunities to have drives to salt the victory away and we didn't do it. And on one of those opportunites, we went 3 and out, throwing 2 incomplete passes, and only eating a minute of clock.

We were only 46% on third down conversions and only 2/3 Red Zone conversions. We had a couple of mental mistakes with false starts and illegal formations.

So offensively, we played well but we could have played a lot better.

So... B.

Only thing I'd add is that 46% is on the high end of 3rd down conversion percentages...

And if we play a darn near mistake free game we'd probably score 50+ points on offense. They are gonna make mistakes every game. IMO, the only game that I'd give us less than an B+ offensively would be the cowboys...

But I do understand your points and the concerns.

Let's see compared to the league:

Total yards 441 yds - 10 short of 1st place.
Scoring 31 points - 1.8 points short of 1st place.
Passing 192 yds - 23rd place (but obviously the rushing must be considered)
Rushing 248 yds - 1st place (over ourselves) by a mile.

Sure mistakes were made and hopefully they always want to improve but I'm having a hard time seeing how folks are being so ticky tacky that a top of the league level performance is not an A (especially with the best WR in the league out and the #3 WR going down).

The thing is... as good as we did, we could have performed better.

The Patriots are at 55% on 3rd down conversions for the year and 46% is below our own average (granted only by a point.) But we needed a few more first downs at the end of the game to take the stress off our defense.
