Captains Named
Posted by nickscurfield (http://blog.houstontexans.com/category/nick-scurfield/)on September 10, 2010 – 12:52 pm

The Texans’ captains for the 2010 season were named on Friday. Texans coach Gary Kubiak announced them to the team after practice, eliciting a spirited cheer from the huddle of players around him inside the Methodist Training Center.

A few minutes later, Kubiak listed off the captains, which are determined by player votes, to the media. They are as follows:

Offense
WR Andre Johnson (4th year as captain)
QB Matt Schaub (3rd year as captain)

Defense
LB DeMeco Ryans (4th year as captain)
DE Mario Williams (3rd year as captain)
SS Bernard Pollard (1st year as captain)
DE Antonio Smith (1st year as captain)

Special Teams
LB Kevin Bentley (2nd year as captain)

The Texans normally have two captains per side of the ball, but they wound up with four on defense because there was a three-way tie in voting after Ryans.

I was just repeating what he said. I don't even have much room to talk seeing as I went to high school for 2 years in the town that had the big sinkhole and the other 2 years went to a high school with kids from a town called Hoop and Holler.

Four defensive captains? Sounds like watered down leadership to me. Not a fan.

Man, I even watched all of the Saints/Vikes game. Good thing I don't smoke. Plenty of good beer laid in though.

I wonder if Cushing would have been voted one if he didn't get suspended...

They voted and there was a tie for second place. Demeco had the most votes. Everyone else tied for second.

I don't know why the suspension would have prevented the players from voting him captain.

I don't think it prevents him from being voted captain, but he's not gonna be on the field for 4 games, so it is hard to look at him in the leadership role.

If i was a player, i wouldn't have voted him. You want your captains out there for every game. Same reason big ben didn't get voted as a captain

I can't remember the name of it, but they owned a big furniture store there for years.

I don't think this has anything to do with "watered down leadership". It is clear cut that Demeco is THE leader of the defense, i don't see this as a problem, in fact i see it as a good thing that we have 4 players on our defense that have the ability to lead(5 if you include Cush)

DexmanC

Kubiak did say that Demeco was unanimously chosen as the first captain.
The tie occurred when they voted for the SECOND captain.
