I'm guessing we lost our 4th.

nfl.com still has 1, 22, 33, 4, 5, 66, 7

Eisen says we keep our two 3rd rounders and give up a 5th?

So we gained an extra 3rd rounder? I'm cool with that.

That other post was out of anger, I apologize. If not Gerhart, then Tate was my target in the mid rounds. I am ok with this pick, but it still hurts. The pick gets an A-, but the trade down weird shit gets a D.

NM, we traded the 62nd pick to NE, I'm guessing a 5th round since we only move up 4 spot. Maybe a pick next year? Hopefully it's Bennett instead.

Worked out alright, didn`t it? Several guys had Tate over gerhart, and now we also gained another 3d and only had to give up a 5th. Ill take that! O-Line, D-Line and FS still needs an upgrade - or we could go with a bpa now like Shipley.

Biggest needs before the draft:

CB - Check!
HB - Check!

Not sure he is even the best WR at the moment.

"he comes into a crowded backfield in Houston..."

No he doesn't! It's an open position. Nobody has won it.

If he blows up and holds down the job, we will forget Foster AND Slaton's jersey number(s). That's how the NFL works.

Fine, let us wait to see what they do with that pick. It is just that I believe that you dont pass on franchise caliber backs in the second. You just dont.

You have fallen in love with Toby and need to relax a little.

Last time I checked, we could use MORE early-round draft picks.

We just took an extra 3rd rounder by letting Gerhart slip to the Vikings, and we still picked up a running back in the 2nd round that a lot of people think is a very solid and logical pick for us.

Lance Z (last night) said he thinks the Texans don't know how to work the draft board, but it appears we just did in THIS round.

I like multiple 3rd rounders a lot better than multiple 4th rounders, and I sure as heck like multiple 3rd rounders vs. a 5th rounder. And we still got a good RB prospect in Ben Tate.

I give this a B+, at worst. Maybe an A if Ben Tate starts sustaining drives and scoring TDs in the red zone.

I dont think Gerhart is a franchise calibur back .... I think he will be good in short yardage situations but I dont see him as an every down back - He and Tate are very similar in that .... and Tate is a bit quicker. Ive said a few times that I would be happy with either but that Tate was my choice given both.

Getting the 93 pick from Minn and Tate was a nice move by the FO. Now if they could get Asamoah somehow .....

Gerhart fan here, but Tate was my 2nd choice. I think the team got a little cute and almost lost their target because of it. Overall, though, I'm OK with the move if the extra 3rd yields a starter.

Golden Tate and Shipley will play similiar roles for a team and Tate just went off the board......

Anyway, my disapproval of the Shipley suggestion is that you are talking a mega luxury pick when there are glaring needs to be met on the Texans.

I guess the judgement is that Gerhart is not a franchise back.

I think he's a guy you throw out there when you know the defense is going to blitz and you want a safety-valve to toss the ball to.

Because he will get the ball out in space and will eat up DBs trying to run up to stop him. Dallas Clark'ish, IMO.

Ok, ok. I have cooled down a little. If the third is a good pick, then I will be perfectly happy. As I have said a couple times now, I give the pick an A-. I did not like the trade back, but as someone pointed out, I lost objectivity. I believe I have regained that (somewhat, it is hard to due in the blink of an eye, but I am working on it), and can move on.

But that's how Vikings will use him, because he ain't running the ball with Peterson back there.

They are going to use him as a FB-type or H-back type of player. Watch and see.

No, I think you are entitled to your position. Don't apologize for it, by any means. And I wasn't trying to bust your chops.

I have been 100% uninvolved in studying the run-up to the draft. I participated in ZERO mocks, and I didn't do all the hours of research and watch all the coverage.

You obviously did. And I think you see something in him that we could have used. Kaiser Toro saw something in Cody that we could have used. Smithiak must have had Tate on their brain the whole way!

Toby might do better in Minny than he would have here. I don't think Michael Irvin would have prospered on a multitude of other teams had he been on any team other than the Cowboys. So perhaps Smithiak felt that Tate is what's needed and Toby (while a nice player) would not provide the specifics that they desire, considering what we currently have to work with.

rmartin65
04-23-2010, 07:25 PM
Good man, who do you want with that third?

I want to build the trenches. A guard or a center. FS is also a need, but the only one worth a 3rd (in my opinion) is Burnett.

Number19
04-23-2010, 07:26 PM
The thing about Tate, from everything I've read, he has some issues with fumbling. You can really get in Kubiak's doghouse not holding onto the ball, so I'm a little surprised with the pick.

I was not apologizing for my opinions on Gerhart and Tate, because I still think I was right, but for my gross overreaction.

You were right to say I lost objectivity, I needed to read it.

Fine, let us wait to see what they do with that pick. It is just that I believe that you dont pass on franchise caliber backs in the second. You just dont.

If Gerhart was a franchise caliber RB he would've gone in the first. He's not. Not saying he's a bad player.

Other thing I think is he doesn't fit well with what we're looking for from our RBs. He's not known for decent hands out of the backfield, don't think he blocked well or had to at Stanford. Also he doesn't have great initial burst.

I think he's going to fit well in Minnesota. The line there can open up holes for him to run through and they likely won't ask him to be a major target out of the backfield. The move makes a lot of sense especially if Favre decides to not come back. No matter who the QB is he's going to have a pounding run game to fall back on.

You can get in Kubiak's doghouse with fumbling, but you can also get away with it if you're the guy, evidently. Slaton was allowed to fumble a lot more than Jacoby, for instance. I'm not sure JJ has 7 career fumbles lost (maybe he does, dunno), but Slaton had 7 in half a season.

I've been reading some scouting reports on Ben Tate, and it would seem most of them agree he's a good fit for a ZBS or one-cut and go systems. The most consistent knock on him I've found is he doesn't always show up for all his games.

Wait... WHAT!?!

LOL. :pissed:

I am pleased with this draft so far. I really am.

I'm just one fan, but it sure is nice to see Smithiak take a running back in the 2nd. And take one that has some legitimate credentials. I think they raised their game a notch this year because the pressure is ON after missing the playoffs by one game.

I do NOT like our free agency activity, however. But that's been balanced out by locking up DeMeco and retaining Pollard.

If we manage to grab two 3rd rounders who make a meaningful difference on our team this year, this draft is a home-run IMO. Four picks, in the early rounds, who make an impact on our team.

My pink soap is locked away in a safety deposit box for the moment.

Pass rush: At least moderate initial quickness and can get skinny to slide through the gap and disrupt the play immediately. Quick, active hands to battle inside. Flashes a good swim and rip move, but needs to use each more often. Relies too much on a marginally effective bull rush. Has a second burst to close when he has a lane, but tires quickly. Struggles to change direction and too often can be eluded for a defensive tackle with his size and relative athleticism.

Run defense: Flashes a quick burst laterally to penetrate. Good balance in tight quarters and feel to handle the trap block. Plays stouter than his frame would indicate due to good use of leverage and leg drive, but is never going to be a true run-stuffer. Hustles laterally in pursuit.

Explosion: Can surprise the guard with his initial burst to slip through the gap. Quick, active hands and good upper body strength to knock the offensive lineman back off the snap.

Strength: Good leg drive to lock out and anchor, though he lacks the bulk to hold up to double-teams. Can push offensive guards into the pocket to create a disruption in the running game. Good strength for the drag-down tackle while still engaged with the blocker.

Tackling: Classic catch and drag-down tackler. Has a burst to close and flashes some pop when given space to gain momentum. Provides good effort laterally, but isnt able to stalk the ball-carrier, showing only marginal body control.

Intangibles: Caught 13 passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns in 2006-07 as a part-time starting H-back. Missed the 2009 game against Washington due to a freak injury to his eye after it was hit by the corner of a door. Highly respected by fans, teammates and the coaching staff. Voted a 2009 team captain. Struggled with academics early in his career, but was named a winner of the National Academic Momentum Award which is presented by the Scholar-Baller Program in conjunction with the National Consortium for Academics and Sports. High-effort player with some legitimate upside as a relative neophyte at the position.

Did our FO really think that he wouldn't drop a few more spots to our next 3rd round pick?

atlanta just took another nobody at DT. our guy got a 5.9 rating off nfl.coms scouting service which is decent. atlantas guy was 2.5 :choke:

So that means possible OL with our next selection. Still some good ones on the board.

Mike Johnson at OG or Matt Tennant to OC would be solid choices if available.

who is the front office going to pick next or are we going to trade down for a couple of late 7th rounders. the brain trust is definitely bargain shopping.

McCoy's was the first pick of 9 straight picks that were acquired in trades from other teams.

Teams have been busy.
