With all this trade, cut talk of linebackers, who do you think should be the starting 4 this season. Im all for babin-the dolphin-Sharper/Wong-Peek. I think that Dom is hopefully going to be going to a speed attack, much like the ravens have had with their LBs. I think with Seth in the middle and healthy and hopefully some DE help this season, we would see Peek and even Babin in double digit sacks. The speed of that combination would be scary.

I also heard a RUMOR from another message board from a restaurant owner saying he overheard talk of trading Sharper to Seattle? He said it sounded imminent???

This is a RUMOR mind you and he hasnt replied to me yet.

Glenn can't play Safety... He's too small! Rolle could play FS, especially in nickel and dime defenses. However, neither Rolle nor Marcus Coleman are big enough to play SS- that will have to be Glenn Earl/Ramon Walker.

Hopefully we can come to a agreement with Sharper and have him stay. Then Greenwood would be the top back up at all the positions.

Greenwood has Foremans spot for sure, babin will start, its who the other two will be. Shaper/Peek/Wong. Thats the choices right now. This team is going to have some speed this season with Sharper maybe leaving and having wong and peek in there.

I have a feeling our future inside linebacker to pair with Greenwood is coming from the draft. Hopefully Peek can show enough in practice to start this year. We need to increase our linebacker speed and Peek, Greenwood and Babin all have great speed for guys their size.

I think our lineup should be Peek/Wong/Greenwood/Babin.

There is no point in keeping Sharper and Wong. Wong deserves some credit, he is a good solid player. Why sign a new ILB and not start Wong at all? We must trade Sharper and give this lineup a chance.

Vinny,

Do you think that this fiasco with Sharper could be an extension ploy?Yeah, very much so. Casserly is a fair guy and apparently Sharper and Casserly were far apart in worth. I'm sure CC told him to go out and see what he is worth on the open market. If the Texans feel that the market is overvalued and Sharper can get that kind of money I think they would trade him if the deal is fair. If we cannot resign him he is just going to walk next year anyway. Why not get something now if you cannot agree on worth? Now, if Sharper comes back with lower figures and CC thinks that there is good value in the dollar figure that the market sets he will likely come back here. The variable in this entire equation is the speculation that Sharper may not want to be here and his comments last year may be an indication of that when he was critical of either David Carr or the Coaches (whatever speculation you want to believe).

But the dream team:

They can all be converted to LBs.

i hope sharper reworks his contract and stays, i like his leadership on the field, and we can use his veteran leadership in the LB core, and for the defense entirely.... im sure the comments he made about either Carr or the coaching staff were just frustration after a game, and should be taken with a grain of salt

Trade Sharper for draft picks!

Here's a LB combination I haven't seen mentioned :

Babin... Cheatwood.... Greenwood.....Wong/Peek.

At the time of the Cheatwood signing, the Texans said the decision had not been made whether he would be playing inside or outside. I took this to mean exactly as implied - he was capable of playing either way.

My thoughts exactly, as I looked at a couple of those lineups. This LB corps could get a very inexperienced set of starters if some scenarios play out.

We need SOME accomplished veterans to start at LB. Greenwood is far from accomplished.

Accomplished is over rated. Look at how the ravens defensive dynasty started at LB. Ray Lewis came in as a youngester and tore it up, our boy sharper was rather young too. Now you got other young guys from there like hartwell that this team would die for. Sometimes letting the young and inexperienced guys have a shot turns out to be a god-send. Thats why you draft players, so they can play and show what they have.

I know this isn't directed at me, but I couldn't resist the chance to go off topic again. :thumbup

The more I hear about this the more I think it's a ploy to get him to extend his contract. Just look at what the Rams did to Pace up in St. Louis. They apparently were talking of trading him to the Giants because they were tired of having to give him the franchise tender year after year since he'd never sign a long term contract. Once rumors about the trade started to leak it appeared that negotiations between the Rams and Pace sped up. I'm not sure if they've gotten him to agree to a long term deal or not, but they've at least gotten the negotiations to be serious once again. Let's hope the same is going on with Sharper and the Texans.

We need to draft Kevin Burnett(LB Tennessee) have him learn the ropes and be Wongs successor in the middle, and have wong be the top backup since he can play inside or outside.

I'm not really sure of any time frame, but I would imagine that if they can't get something worked out around draft time they might begin to get a little frustrated with Sharper and his agent. It seems this sort of ploy is becoming a trend in the NFL. I read in an ESPN article that there were somewhere around half a dozen veteran players given permission to seek trades. That same article said that the Jaguars gave permission to Donovan Darrius to seek a trade as well. Apparently Detroit was interested in him, but after signing Kennoy Kennedy I assume that interest isn't as strong. I wouldn't rule out the possibility that Jamie might get traded if he really wants out of Houston, but I think he's got a very good chance of being with this team on opening day.

*edit* Here's a link to that ESPN article.ESPN (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=pasquarelli_len&id=2004952) It's a good read.

"Assuming the Texans don't add another linebacker through free agency or invest a high draft pick on the position, the most likely possibility for a starting four, based on players currently on the roster, would have Greenwood and Kailee Wong at the inside positions and Peek and Jason Babin outside."
http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/sports/3075853

Looks like Charlton Thompson agrees with my most likely scenario. I also found this an intriguing possibility (based upon the article) :
We draft a DE that converts to OLB and start Babin, Wong, Greenwood, Erasmus James/Shawne Merriman.

I'm convinced that Foreman is 99% likely to be cut/traded. Sharper is a different matter. I don't think he plans on coming back next year. If that is the case, we might as well get some value for him and trade him.

If Wong moves inside and Greenwood starts next to him, we will have 3 guys starting for the first time in their positions and a 2nd year starter in Babin. A bit green to say the least.

I dont know what yall think but i love it when I see Peek out there getting all in somebodys @$$! I dont know why some guys are like," He is too immature, he needs to be under control" and i agree to a short extent but I love it when a player has a fire burning inside and they play with everything they got. Like after they get a tackle, they dont just stand up(Jamie Sharper) and walk back to the huddle, They get up clapping and hoopin and hollerin. I just think we shouldnt always try to control Peek, I think we should UNLEASH him. He has Terrel Suggs-Type ability, all we need to do is see it.

you know i must admitt the longer you look at this sharper issue the more obvious it is to me that he will not be with the team going into the preseason...the man sadly wants out of houston because he and capers are not agreeing on most things...on the bright side of this it would more than likely get peek on the field as a starter something i think everyone here would agree he should have been last season...although going into this offseason i was hoping for a lineup of peek wong sharper babin i know do not see that happening...if sharper is traded i see us drafting an ILB on the first day but not in the first round...potential guys would be ruud from nebraska, mitchell from oklahoma, and burnett from tennessee...out of those three potential second rounders i think mitchell could be the best...as for the third round your looking at guys like mccune from louisville and morrison from san diego state...mccune is super fast but morrison has the size and the strength...personally i'd go with mccune to continue upgrading the speed of the position

The thing I live about Peek is that he forces teams to have to adjust to compensate for his speed. Tarik Glenn is a good LT and he got 2 consecutive penalties because he was so concerned about Peek's speed. How many times can we say that about a Texan defender?

Yeah! thats the stuff Peek can do for us that no other texan defender can. And he was all in that dudes ear yappin and getting in Glenns head, making him think too much. We have to have Peek play, or it wont matter how good D rob & aaron glenn are, they cant cover WR forever. To get to the playoffs, we gotta get to the QB.

Peek also immediately forced the Titans to double him up when he came in for Babin. Can't remember but on his first play in he knocked the ball out or made a big play, when he came in after that the RT always had help. There is something there but it has to be harnessed.

I've been trying to do some research on Cheatwood. Who is this guy?
I haven't found a lot on this guy. But he graduated from Ohio State in 2001/2002. He had quite a bit of playing time but was never was a permanent starter, never finding a permanent position. I believe he started out as a safety, moved to LB and ended up at DE (over a four year period). He was not invited to the combine, but ProFootball Weekly had his speed estimated at 4.85 and gave him a final grade, just prior to the draft, of 4.78. He was not drafted and ended up in Canada with the Hamilton Wildcats. There he played DE and developed into a good "sack artist". Search this forum for Cheatwood threads. Quite a few Hamilton Wildcat fans had comments on what a good - and popular - player he was for their team.

Your obsession has nothing to do with my take on him. I like the guy's raw speed and coverage ability. He forces teams to think about him on passing downs. If we can harness that talent, he can be a star.

However, there is a reason that he hasn't started yet. He drives the coaches crazy for a reason. In preseason last year he got a chance to start. He kept losing his outside containment and it resulted in several big rushing plays. That lack of either discipline or knowledge has cost him. They wouldn't be looking at drafting an OLB if there wasn't an issue with that.
