View Full Version : San Francisco & Texans trade?

NFL Total Access last night reviewed 49ers and suggested SF trade out of #13 which leaves them #17. A second round this year and a first from next was the trade & it was mentioned that a 1st round next year would be much cheaper under a new CBA with proposed salary caps for rookies as incentative.

Would you do that deal? #13 would probably get you Haden CB, Kyle Wilson (some supposedly like him more) or Earl Thomas FS. All three have been mocked at maybe gone by our #20.

Texans would still have # 20 to draft or trade down. Or do you go with what we have and hope you can get a starter at # 20 or trade down?

I am never inclined to give up draft picks.

For a franchise changing player I might but I'm talking Franchise QB type player not a CB or FS.

I'd do it and draft Spiller.

What about giving our 2nd and next season 1st and drafting Thomas? You could then use # 20 if Wilson is there or trade with Chargers and get either their 2nd to replace ours sent to SF or aforementioned trade of swapping 2nds and getting their 3rd. Thomas may drop to us at #20 but everything points to him being an elite FS. One of the radio guys mentioned last week we could draft him and cut Eugene Wilson whom the radio guy said had been signed to a ridiculously over paid deal. I believe Thomas would strengthen Quin or a Haden.

Why trade up when a great player will be available for us @ #20 at a cheaper price?

Why trade up when a great player will be available for us @ #20 at a cheaper price? This is where I'm at right now. If the Texans only had one hole to fill and the marquee replacement will require moving up, then fine, pull the trigger. As is stands, the Texans will certainly have a good player available at a position of need.

Usually I'm very hesitant about trading up but I'd have to give this one serious thought. We'd essentially be getting next year 1st round pick this year and since next years 1st round pick figures to be much lower than #13 then the trade is in our favor. Also the talent level in next years draft figures to be lower because so many quality underclassmen are coming out this year. We'd be giving up this years 2nd round pick which would hurt since the talent level in this draft is so high but for a franchise CB (Haden) it might be worth it.

Why trade up when a great player will be available for us @ #20 at a cheaper price?Who is this great player? As I noted all players we all like have been posted at one time or another to be drafted already. If we can get a great player @ #20 but you can get a possibly even greater player @13 for a 2nd & a late first next season?

If we could get Haden at 13 and Thomas at #20 & maybe Tate or Gerhart in 3rd, I'd probably do that. Even better if we could do a trade down.

My mistake. I didnt read the trade correctly. I though it said trade our first and 2nd this year for the #13 pick.

Personally I think it would take more than our #2 this year, and #1 next year since picks from the next year are generally worth less value wise.

I would do it if we were sure that we could also pull the trade with SD and get some of those picks back.

If we did trade 2010's 2nd and 2011's first round pick, it would have to be to get Earl Thomas at #13. That makes sense, you're talking about one of the best Free Safety prospects to come out in years, and he would give the Texans more marketability around the state. Use that 20th pick on CB Wilson or Haden if they are there, if not try to trade back 4-9 spots and get McCourty. The could sell Ryan Matthews to the Chargers for a swap of our 3rd and their 2nd. Now that would be a bold set of moves on the Front Office's part.

This team is in Win Now mode - That said , having two #1's wouldnt be a bad way to fill some holes - They could fix two of three big needs with premium picks - Those being CB , S and RB.

If those players step in and contribute like you would expect from a #1 this team would be playoff bound.

Then again - I hate to give up picks ..... Couldnt we just give them a case of Shiner for that #1 ?

Hold up one moment. Do not go overboard with the hyperbole. Thomas is a great player but to call him one of the best FS prospects to come out in years is a stretch. Eric Berry is the best FS prospect to come out in years.

I put Berry, Sean Taylor(2004), LaRon Landry(2007), Brandon Merriweather(2007) and Michael Huff(2006) as the best Free Safety prospects in the last 6 drafts. I am not sure where I would put Thomas, but he is not in the top 5 of basically the past 6 years.

He is a very good prospect, but he is not one of the best FS prospects to come out in years. And this is coming not only from a guy who pays attention to the draft, but a HUGE Longhorns fan.

I think if he had stayed one more year at Texas he would have been a Top 10 pick & in discussion with those names submitted. remember Earl is only a redshirt sophomore :rollbaby:

I still would not call him one of the best ever to come out. His body of work is to small, and his frame is on the small size to go with those guys already mentioned as top guys.

the problem is we will never know, until he actually plays in the NFL because there is not enough evidence to support this claim based off only two years of College. In large part this is the reason why we (rmartin65/badboy) projected him #20, that is until his pro-day when he ran a sub 4.4

Here is the question, what players available at #13 would be worth our 2nd round this season and our theoretically low first next season? I think several. We then should net a starter with #20 or even better trading with Chargers to get someone like McCourty. Even Nate Allen FS @#28 is not too big a reach.

Spiller Rb @ #13, CB McCourty at #28 and in 2nd use Chargers #40 on RBs Ben Tate or Gerhart or DT Lamarr Houston or FS Burnett and our 3rd for FS Major Wright or C/OG JD Walton 4th LG MArshall Newhouse, Jordan Shipley WR

I like: 1st #13 Spiller RB 1st #28 (S.Diego) McCourty CB 2nd #40 (S.D.) L.Houston D.T. 3rd. Major Wright FS 4th. Newhouse LG 5th Joique Bell RB 6'1"233 http://nfldraft.rivals.com/cviewplayer.asp?Player=423695&PT=7&PR=2&type=scouting#scouting

So Slaton is Not coming back next year ? Or or you going to trade SS after or during draft day for two six packs and a ham sandwich ( a forth round or lower pick) ? Inquiring minds wish to know.

With our line backers I don't believe Earl Thomas will have a lot of exposure. I'd move up for Thomas or Iupati. Every thing else I could find in rounds two through four. So could a lot of others on the board. We've been doing it for weeks. The two biggest holes are the interior of the o-line and the back four. Up to you to figure out which is the best way to slay those two dragons.

I think you have a better chance finding a starting OG in the middle of the draft than you do finding a starting FS. If it came down to Thomas or Iupati, I would take Thomas 100% of the time.

That said, I would not like the trade up. This draft is too talented, if anything the Texans should try to trade out of the first and get a couple 2nds and 3rds.

As of today, we have nothing that says SS will or will not be back. We have more to go on that Eugen Wilson will be back and that Quin/Reeves will be starters but we discuss drafting corners and safeties in the first round..

If I had Spiller in first and knew I could get a 4th for Slaton, I think that would be a done deal. Thanks for the suggestion.

Many of us have disagreed with you on the Oline needing to be addressed in first or even 2nd rounds. Most sites I review say CB and RB first two rounds.

Well we'll get to see how many no holes Spiller can run through as opposed to Steve Slaton I guess ? Don't give him a number just paint an "S" on his chest. We're done for 2010 as soon as they draft a corner or a speed scat back in the first. JMHO. Waited eight years guess I can wait another eight.

Mike Mayock disagrees with you. He came out and said" He is the best free ranging safety to come out in six years. " He does this for a living. I would be OK with the move up and the loss of the two. We do not know for sure if he can or can not play corner. But next to Pollard, he could cover up all the warts with all the CBs and DBs we currently have on the roster. Further, if we're moving up to nine I would expect it would be to get Thomas or Iupati, and not the under sized Spiller. They both solve major holes on the team . And each elevates his side of the ball to the point it would raise the team as a whole.

Pick your left guard. the only question if they are holding the line is if Briseil is coming back. If they hit on Newhouse and he can transition

Brown Newhouse Myers Brisiel Winston. everyone is all over the board on who the interior o-linman pick will be. rumor that we're moving up to nine, gives me hope someone on Kirby is coming to their senses.

Brown Iupati Myers Briseil Winston.

Won't matter who the GD back is.

I really like Iupati as a prospect but he's just too raw for me to think he'll be a major impact for the 2010 season. I may trade down and select him and play the waiting game on a potential dominant guard but I don't give away picks to move up for him. Him being Iupati

Spiller and Thomas are guys it looks like we'd have to move up for to get. The more and more I think about Spiller, the more I'm convinced he's going to be the real deal in the NFL. I just don't think I want to give any draft picks in this deep of a draft..... however

Now... I might be interested in trading some of our picks for Nnamdi Asomugha and Albert Haynsworth. Aso if the Raiders want to dump his contract; give up our 1st and maybe a mid-late rd pick depending on Oakland's need. And Haynsworth if we can get him for a decent price; I think Kubiak and Shanahan might have each others phone numbers but not quite sure. It would take a lot to get done and is really just for fantasy speculation but I think it'd be the quickest way for us to get to the playoffs.

Haynsworth may (who knows his motivation now) want to be a part of, actually help make, the most dominant DL in the league. Okoye would instantly be successful. Mario would have 20+ sacks. Smith and Barwin would be productive. There's just too many quality pass rushers to block on the front 4 and Fat Al would take advantage of the 1on1 matchups he occasionally gets. Our LB's are freaking stout with Demeco, Cushing and Diles. No need to upgrade Diles b/c any of our WLBs would come out on passing downs. Our secondary see immediate improvement from the front 4's pressure, Pollard is an enforcer and we're getting Wilson back for coverage. Aso is a Top 1-3 CB in the league and would shut down his side of the field, Quin/Reeves man the other side with Wilson over the top. That's a Top 5 Defense easy.

Then you get to the offense. We manage to keep our 2nd round pick (have to give away say a 1st and 4th for Aso and a 3rd and 6th for Fat Al). Pick up our RB in the 2nd like Tate, Dwyer, Gerhart or Hardesty. Pick up OL in the 5th and/or 6th. I like Adam Ulatoski to be a LG and swing tackle. Our TEs and WRs are set and Schaub leads us to the promised land.

Okay, let's pause for station identification while Ole Miss Texan turns off the Madden fantasy GM application :gamer:

I guess this is the way I look at it.

The FO isn't going to make a major move in FA for a player. We're close to the playoffs, I don't think the coaching staff can afford another 8-8 or 9-7 campaign and miss the playoffs. I'm not usually sold on moving up but I think the timing might be right to take a shot.

If we landed Thomas and Wilson. That'd totally remake our secondary. Spend the third on a back that slips down. Fourth on a guard or center. The team would be ready to face a brutal schedule.

Highly unlikely after paying Smith the contract they did he sits on the bench. Brisiel is likely the odd man out this year.

Anyone who thinks we are drafting a guard in round one is on crack, with the slight caveat that every other highly coveted player is gone and we sure as hell aren't moving up for one. We draft a Guard between 3rd-6th rd.

I would do this deal to move up for Thomas. He's special imo and solidifies the back 4. Unlike someone else, I would definetely keep Wilson here as very soild depth and a guy who can play pretty darn well as a starter if you need him. I don't get why you would release a guy that is starter worthy? In the course of 12 months, we would take the weakest position on the field (S) to perhaps competing with LB as the strongest group on the field. Start Pollard the hitter, and Thomas the rangy free safety with mad coverage skills, and you have a dynamic duo that I can put out there against any other safety duo in the league and be right at the top.

I love Spiller, but I don't think I would move up for him. To me, he is a combo of Reggie Bush, Marshall Faulk, and Brian Westbrook. Imagine what you could do with a healthy Spiller and Slaton. I could see a lot of creative packages and defenses wouldn't know which way is up.

My first choice is Thomas if by some miracle we can get him. Second is Spiller, but unlikely to fall. Third choice is Mathews. Fourth is a corner. Take your pick, McCourty or Wilson. I think I might lean McCourty since he is a more phyiscal type, but either is fine. I want to come out of the 1st with one of these players.

If what we have can't run be hind the holes provided by six hundred and fifty pounds of beef on the left side cutting back the backside, well then we weren't gong anywhere anyway. And it's true speed kills. But what's also true is Manning can't beat you if he's standing on the sidelines watching twelve play eight minute drives. And our HC loves those twelve play eight minute drives. American Somoans have to work for a living....just to eat. The holes in Iupati's game are fixable. just go rewatch him run his three cone drill. I'm more impressed with Iupatis 5.2 @ 330 than I am with Spiller's 4.37 at 195. the first thing spiller has to have is hole. You want ten and six or eleven and five and have a shot at the AFC championship game ...better move up and take Thomas or Iupati.
