I couldn't catch it. What'd he say?

It was pretty good. Talked about how we need to learn how to close out games because that's what good teams do. Also talked about how nice it is to play with Andre Johnson and that Matt showed everyone how tough he really was this year (Jacksonville game).

As far as the contract situation, he said his agent and management have talked and it has been positive. He appreciates the high tender the Texans put on him, because to him, that says that they want him here. He said he wants to be here also. Loves the fans and the city.

He also didn't directly answer the question about whether he'll be at OTAs or training camp but he didn't sound like he was planning a hold out either

I thin Kubiak wants to hold him out of OTA's and TC as much as possible so he can be ready to go opening day. At least I hope so.

The thing about loving the fans and the city is standard op procedure.
What I don't get is why the Texans slaped the max tender on OD ? It's
puzzling why they wouldn't let him go for a first round pick (if given the chance), and surely OD can't be worth a 1st & 3rd to anybody ?
He's strictly a systems player who now has a hisotry 3 blown knees with
a lot of uncertainty about the recovery from this one and even more about when the 4th one occurs ?

I've seen him referred to in sources that aren't Texans focused as the best tight end in football.

How much the knee injuries are an issue will be revealed in time, but he is a good one.

Agreed. You aren't going to replace him with just a 1.

i think OD is the most in danger of not getting re signed

maybe kubes thinks Dressen is a good fall back on guy

THat casey will improve year 2

and that when dressen is not in Hill can be a solid TE blocker

who knows

LOL, a healthy Owen Daniels could play in any system.

i would let Owens go for two 2nds right now if i was in charge

We got depth in TE

and we could play around with thoes 3 2nd round picks to move up

o free money space to go into FApart 3 better

After OD went down last year, I was one who thought there would be little drop off with Dreessen and Casey filling in..

OD... First 7.5 games:
40 receptions, 519 yards and 5 TD's

Dreesen for the entire season (starting 11 games according to NFL.com):
26 receptions, 320 yards and 1 TD

James Casey:
6 receptions, 64 yards and No TD's

That my friend is a huge drop-off in production from the TE position.

Again, when the injury happened I was sure that there would be no drop-off. Obviously (and I have no problem admitting it), I was waaaaay wrong.

Daniels says he wants to be a Texan
By Nick Scurfield - Today, 5:13 PM Topic: Team news

One day after discussing his rehab with HoustonTexans.com, Texans tight end Owen Daniels said that he hopes to remain with the team in a Wednesday afternoon appearance on “Jim Rome is Burning” on ESPN.

A restricted free agent, Daniels was tendered by the Texans in March but has yet to sign with the team. He is hoping to receive a long-term contract.

“They had some real positive talks between my agent and management at the combine,” Daniels said during a lengthy interview with Rome in Los Angeles. “They say they want to get something done. I’m assuming they’re going to have to wait ‘til I get (medically) cleared and can do everything, but I looked at the high tender that they put on me, the max tender, as a really positive thing. If they didn’t want me around, they could’ve tendered me at a lower amount. That’s saying that they want me around, they want me to be their guy, so I’m looking at it as positively as I can.

“I want to be in Houston. I love playing there, love the city, love playing for Coach (Gary) Kubiak. That’s where I want to be.”

Daniels, a 2008 Pro Bowler, is coming off of a season-ending injury to his right ACL. Rome asked him if he thinks he’ll have a long-term deal in place before the 2010 season.

“I hope so; I hope before the year starts,” Daniels said. “But I can totally understand if they have to wait ‘til I can play some games, preseason games, whatever it may be. I understand the business. I’m just trying to be as positive as possible with all of this.”

In February, ProFootballTalk.com reported that Daniels could skip training camp in the absence of a long-term deal. Daniels sat out OTAs last offseason because of a contract dispute.

He indicated to Rome that he wants no part of another holdout.

“I don’t want it to (come to that); I really don’t want it to,” he said. “It got a little messy last year. I’m not the type of guy that likes to sit out when everyone else is working, because I like to be around the guys. So any way to avoid that is what I want to do, but if things get ugly, you never know. Like I’ve said, I’ll never say never to holding out, but it’s definitely something that I don’t want to do or be a part of.”

I see the high tender as a good faith "we are going to sign you just be patient" deal more than this is what we want type of thing. If a team was entirely interested in Owen Daniels for a first, I'm sure Smith would've listened to the offer.

Also, OD is pretty much an elite TE in the league in terms of receptions and yards. He's a 1st down machine and a great security blanket for Schaub to have in case of trouble. I don't think you're going to find many people on these boards who will poo-poo the idea that Daniels is a pretty important piece in our offense.

Yeah, a player that has been tendered with a 1st and 3rd is definitely in danger of not getting re-signed.
