alright so who's everybody semi-realistic dream pick at 20. after cushing last year, ive learnt to not be too down on anybody until we see them on the field in a texans uni but i thought it would be fun to see.

for me right now, its a near dead heat between thomas & spiller and im currently giving thomas the edge

You need to put Wilson in the mix too.

Earl Thomas but they are all pretty close imo.

Of the players listed I'd prefer Earl Thomas but I think its likely he's gone before the Texans pick - In that case its Kyle Wilson.

I'd like them to get Wilson or Thomas. Problem is, the closer we get to Draft Day the more I think both of them will be gone, as well as Dan Williams. If that's the case, I hope they can trade back a little and maybe get Mathews or McCourty and pick up an extra draft pick.

Of the players listed Dan Williams is the best value but is most likely gone at #20 and CB is now our biggest need so I chose Kyle Wilson.

Assuming that our major needs are CB, FS, DT, OG, and RB, it's starting to look increasingly obvious to me that Ryan Matthews is our #1 target.

Given our pursuit of Bodden, the contract of Eugene Wilson, the surprisingly sufficient play of Shaun Cody and our DT last season, and the probably value we place on OG, it's looking to me like we're targeting Matthews.

I'm making a number of assumptions here. First of all, I'm assuming we sign Bodden or make a subsequent move for a starting CB. I'm assuming that we're relatively happy with out DT play. And, I'm assuming that we don't value OG enough to take one at twenty,

If these assumptions hold true, I think Matthews is the obvious target.

I'm really hoping Texans just stick to their board & take bpa. When we talk about their board it will reflect needs & how well they feel he fits with what they're trying to do, upgrades always appreciated. that being said Earl would be amazing but N/A :)

There are so many variables. If we could sign Leigh Bodden (to a non Dunta-like deal) then we can go elsewhere with our 1st round pick. I think this is possible because word is his contract demands have lowered slightly.

Also, I really think we should give O.J. Atogwe (FS, Rams) a good look. He got a non-pick designated tender so as long as we give him a deal that the Rams won't match then we can get him, without giving up picks/compensation. It will probably take a contract similar to that of Antrel Rolle's though to persuade the Rams not to match the offer. He is better than Rolle though. He would be a multiple time Pro-Bowler if voters were not so ignorant.

If we can sign Bodden and Atogwe then we add two very good secondary players without losing picks. Then I say we draft Ryan Mathews in the 1st and Mike Johnson in the 2nd. Go DT in the 3rd or 4th and CB in the 3rd, 4th, or 5th. Take a WR in the 4th or 5th and grab an OLB and DE late. Maybe draft a K or P late too.

If Earl Thomas falls to us, it'll probably be him. But I'm always in favor of drafting linemen (either side) in the first round. I think if we do draft a lineman in the first round this year, it'll be a DT, and not C/G.

Drafts get kind of crazy though when other teams ahead of you start reaching or trading down. If they get a starter that makes a difference (at any position) I'll be very happy with it.

same for me, with dan williams and ryan matthews in the mix if neither thomas or spiller are available. kyle wilson too, but only if we don't sign bodden.

I am torn between Earl Thomas and Upati. But leaning towards Thomas.

Kyle Wilson is way down on my list.

Earl Thomas
Mike Upati
Ryan Matthews
Taylor Mays
Dan Williams
CJ Spiller
Patrick Robinson
Kyle Wilson

Upati does absolutly nothig for me. He is too stiff for our system, me thinks. The rest of the list is close, though I would out WIlson a little higher. Swap he and Mayes, who isn't a FS IMO, and we're good.

I'm going to have to rethink this if we actually sign Bodden. I hope we can b/c that would open up the draft significantly.

Assuming we sign Bodden, I still wouldn't be opposed to taking a CB early if they think that guy is special. No way do I want to pass on a special playmaker for the sake of addressing another need, no way.

I might lien towards Brian Price, a penetrating DT that fits what the staff wants in a DT. With that said there's some interesting prospects at DT in rounds 2-4 but then again that can be said for just about any position.

Ryan Matthews /CJ Spiller would have to be possibilities for me, although I may like a Ben Tate in the 2nd (or 3rd).

I still can't get my hands around Iupati (no pun intended). If Kubiak/Dennison think he would be an elite Guard (preferably LG) on THIS team then I would LOVE the pick... with a big RB like Tate in the 2nd. But if they don't think he's going to be anything more than A. Caldwell then I would pass. I defer the x's and o's and scouting to the staff.

Earl Thomas would definitely be nice.

I would love to trade down to pick up an extra 3rd if no special guy is at 20.

With all that said and no trade down available... I might just hold my nose on another DT pick in the 1st and take Brian Price. Then look at Mike Johnson for LG in the 2nd or 3rd and Ben Tate for RB in the 2nd or 3rd.

Last mock I looked at (Walter Football 3/7/10) was pretty interesting. They had Bradford going 1 and Okung going 2 to protect Stafford. Domino effect time with Suh going 3 and McCoy slipping to 6... which means Berry slipped but still the first DB taken which means who slips (partly because of his slow 40 which means he can't play football)... Joe Haden right to the Texans at #20.

Sign Bodden and if Haden is there at #20 I have the card in Goodell's hand before the ink dries. Give us CB's of Haden #1, Bodden #2, Quin/Reeves as #3/4 where I think they would excel instead of being pushed into starter roles. Wilson as our FS and Pollard as our SS and finally our secondary is a strength. With Demeco and Cushing as great as they are.... just think about the coverage sacks that Mario, Amobi, et al would get.

Earl Thomas with a VERY close second choice of Kyle Wilson.

As it stands right now, we have to go DB in the first round, and probably in the second round as well. So these are the guys IŽd take if available:

1. Joe Haden
2. Earl Thomas
3. Kyle Wilson
4. Best CB available <-> best player available at another need position

My list with scenarios:

@20 Take Joe Haden if available, else
@20 Take Earl Thomas if available, else
@20 Take CJ Spiller if available, else
Trade back 4-8 spots - (Eagles may want to move up for Mays, Arizona may want a DT, Chargers may want a DT or a CB)
Then
@24-28 take Ryan Matthews if available, else
@24-28 take Kyle Wilson if available, else
@24-28 take Devin McCourty if available, else
@24-28 take Maurkice Pouncey if available, else
@24-28 take Dan Williams if available, else
Trade down again? Someone has to be there.

I try to push my wants out of the picture and think like Smithiac if possible.
DT: We need one but over all our line shut down the run & Smith + LBs look pretty good. That + a better year from a hopefully healthy Mario pushed DT down to round 3 (Linval Joseph).

FS: Big on Thomas and had on earlier mocks but E Wilson backed by Barber probably will move FS down to 5th on my mock (Robert Johnson Utah 6'2" 197 4.52 13 INTs 3 years).

LG: Studdard starter per Kubes with CHester Pitts in the mix maybe and Pouncey C/OG on my board 2nd round.

CB: No Bodden but while solid, many think he is way below DR's skills. Only two CBs have a chance at starting IMO Haden & Kyle Wilson. Haden not there and maybe not Wilson. I go with Akwasi Owusu-Ansah 4th round CB/FS/KR 6' 207 4.47 link http://www.iupathletics.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/010810aaa.html
Starters will be Reeves and Quin.

RB: Most know RMARTIN 65 & I have pushed Toby Gerhart for a long time. I have to now say I doubt Smithiac will draft a large power back especially with a 5'11" 220 lb 4.45 Ryan Mathews who screams ZBS player available at # 20. We might be able to trade back a few spots but not sure I would take that chance.

Good list.

I don't particularly care for Dan Williams because the DT position is very deep in this draft. I feel that if we were able to trade back 4-8 spots and pick up an extra 3rd or 4th in the process, we will end up getting another DT with that pick. Also, Dan Williams may be the trade bait needed at 20 to go back and get the extra pick :)

Ryan Matthews isn't worth the 20th pick, and I doubt he will go in the first round, but I can see Detroit picking him as early as 34. However, the need is there, and for the right price the Texans could trade back and still get him while acquiring another pick. I would love to see them trade back with even the Rams/Lions/Bucs for a pair of mid-round picks as well. There could be some great value and they should still be able to get Matthews either way.

I disagree on Mathews. I've graded him as a first rounder since before the season even began. I know I'm definitely in the minority on that one but I've been watching him for years now and I feel like I have a good read on him. I think he is the best back in this draft and the only real question about him was his long speed. Now that that's been answered I think he has a real shot to fly up in the draft.

I agree he is a first round talent, I just don't think he will go in the first round. I think he will be right at the front of the second round though, there are quite a few teams that need a RB in that group. The earliest I think he will go is 28 to the Chargers, but they may prefer Javid Best or Dwyer over Matthews. I think Detroit will take a RB at 34 too. After that the Redskins, Raiders, Seahawks and Browns will all be looking for RBs too.

I really just want to see the Texans get the most out of their picks. If that means taking Matthews at 20, then so be it. I would rather they at least pick up a couple extra picks in the process, even if that means missing out on Matthews. Dexter McCluster could be their second round target instead.

Ok I will give you Matthews, but I think there is a good chance he goes in the 20's.

But Dan Williams would be a very good pick for us. Agree or not, we need help in the middle of our Dline. Dan is a big man who can collapse the pocket or stuff the run while getting to the QB.

The main reason why I'm concerned about taking Williams at 20 (if he's there at all) is that some have reported he has 'effort issues'. I really don't want to see them draft a guy that only plays at full speed when he feels like it. He also had weight issues in college and that could be a problem during the off-seasons. He looked great in the Senior Bowl though, so I'm split on him.

In all honesty, I really hope Earl Thomas drops to the Texans at 20. Even moreso than Joe Haden. I think our CB's suffered a bit from not having a fast DB to help them cover the long throws and that getting ET to play FS will upgrade two positions at once. He will be an upgrade at FS and increase the effectiveness of our CBs.

PS, I'm an Aggie hoping we draft a longhorn :D

I hear ya. I think everyone is concerned about a player taking plays off when you draft dlinemen. But elite DT's dont grow on trees, and dont hit the open market very often. Something to think about.

Again, im not saying take Williams over Thomas, but if Thomas, and Upati are gone, Williams would have to be considered for me.

I voted for Wilson but I'm really hoping for a trade down scenario where we pick up Wilson, Pouncey, Mathews, Tate, McCourty or Hardesty.

I'm actually excited that we didn't get Bodden. I think one of the DB's will end up being a better long term selection that will benefit us in the next 2 years (when there's no football :( of course...) But getting a guy like Pouncey I think actually benefits the team the most as far as need and depth are concerned.

first all good riddens of Dunta! I think we should trade up and get E. Thomas. He is a starter right our of the gate. He has good value and he is a playmaker. Yes, we may loose some picks but. A draft pick like that is hard to come by. I think you can draft a CB in later rounds.

I would love to get Dan Williams at 20. If they pass on him in the 1st I wonder if they would take Terrance Cody if he fell to them in the 2nd.

I have a feeling this year that if the Texans pass on rb in the first that they will try and trade up because of the amount of teams needing rbs and because of how they got burned in a few rounds last year. They need a good set of fresh legs this year and Matthews looks like a perfect fit here in Houston.

Well first you have to figure out who will target Earl Thomas, and then one-up them. The mocks that I have seen Thomas not going to the Texans have had him being grabbed by Jaxsonville, Miami and Denver. That would be picks 10, 11 or 12, which would mean you would have to jump up about 10 spots. That would cost a 1st, 2nd and possibly 5/6th. That's really expensive considering there is a chance he will drop to 20 and they have lots of needs to fill. If he's there at 20, I fully expect the Texans to take him, if not, well then they have a lot of options.

Personally, I would love to see the Texans use the 20 on Thomas or Wilson, then trade away a 2011 1st for a late first round pick this year to grab a Ryan Matthews, Brian Price or Maurkice Pouncey. Get it now while the gettin's good!
