View Full Version : Antrelle Rolle: Possible Cardinals release

The Cardinals are expected to release FS Antrel Rolle this week. Analysis: The sides have been negotiating a contract extension, but cutting Rolle will allow the Cards to avoid paying his impending $4.1 million roster bonus. It may also very well cost them their starting free safety. Rolle, will become an unrestricted free agent and generate interest because of his play-making ability. The 27-year-old has 10 interceptions over the past three years.

I generally don't like this guy is being released so let's go after him threads. This is one of the few in my mind that makes sense. He is young enough at a position where upgrade can help us greatly and has some connection with the staff: Frank Bush.

This would be a good thing, I think.

Antrel Rolle a Texan? Hell yeah. I wonder if Rolle is close with AJ and/or Winston? Maybe these Canes could do a little politicking? Couldn't hurt, though there are probably ex-Canes on every NFL team.

He's scheduled to earn more than 8 million this year if the Cards choose to pay his bonus. As reported elsewhere, there is also no cap floor this year and the Cards may insist that he takes a cut, not an increase. If he is released, he will be looking for a very nice payday from the next team, especially since the IRS recently caught up with him for fudging on his 2005 and 2006 tax returns...........a cool 2.2 million.

As he enters the final year of his rookie deal, Cardinals safety Antrel Rolle is due to earn a base salary of $8.11 million.

Then there's a $4 million roster bonus due next week.

Based on 2009 wages, the Cardinals already employ the highest-paid safety in the NFL -- Adrian Wilson, who made $7.039 million last season.

So Rolle, who has said he's not taking a pay cut and who has coughed up $2.2 million in back taxes to the IRS, could be hitting the open market in the uncapped year. Darren Urban of the team's official web site predicts that Rolle will be released.

Rolle, who said last month that he'd like to play for the Dolphins, was the eighth overall pick in the 2005 draft, three selections before DeMarcus Ware.

Meanwhile, Rolle is the second top-ten pick of the Cardinals during the three-year Denny Green era to unlock high-end escalators that eventually forced the team into a corner. Two years ago, 2004 first-rounder Larry Fitzgerald parlayed a huge cap number into a four-year, $40 million deal. This time around, a good-but-not-great career from Rolle has put him in line for $12 million, an amount that's unheard of for a safety.

So Rolle undoubtedly won't be back in Arizona absent a major pay cut, and he'll ultimately make a lot less than $12.11 million this year, and likely in any future year of his career. profootballtalk.com

Of course it's early, but there are rumors of Arizona's Rolle bieng released:

http://blog.azcardinals.com/2010/02/21/two-weeks-of-decisions-set-offseasons-course/

If the Texans were to pick up Rolle that would free up a draft choice to go DT or CB in the first.

If I'm Rick Smith I'd get a check ready to go. If we could get a top notch FS to go with the "Piss Knocker" we'd get another 10 sacks easy!!!!!!

Although there aren't a whole lot of big name FA's out there I have a feeling that this could get interesting!!!!!!!!!!

The Cardnials were dissappointed with Rolle and moved him around from CB to S as far as I remember. He had one good season so I'm not sure if that was a fluke or if he finally gets it. Expect to pay up if you want him.

Pollard and Rolle will make a great safety tandem
draft a corner and pair them up with Glover Quin and we have a good secondary

Depends on for how much. I see him in the same mold as a Reeves FA pickup.

I would imagine that the success rate of the FS depends mostly on the pressure created by the front seven. Arizona has a decent D-line, so 3.3 interceptions per year on that team isn't astronomical. Still, he's probably an upgrade to what we have, unless Barber or Ferguson mature and take a huge leap forward.

Didn't Frank Bush have a couple of years with this guy too? I would imagine his opinion matters most on this option.

Mature? Ferguson has been in the league 10+ seasons. If he hasn't matured by now, it's way too late. I'm not sure he will even be on the team at the start of TC.

As for Rolle, he probably would be an upgrade over Wilson, but it will probably come down to how much money, as usual. If we did get him though, it sure would change a lot of Mock Drafts. :D

Didn't this guy used to be a CB ? I haven't kept up with him, What's the situation with that ? If he was only moved to Saftey because of depth issues then would he be a capeable replacement for Dunta ? Or was he moved to Saftey due to lack of speed ?

Depends how Eugene Wilson is recovering. You can't afford to have both. Wilson is a pretty good FS in his own right and Rolle will be commanding twice what we're paying him. If the FO doesn't like how Wilson is rehabbing and they decide to cut him and sign Rolle, I'll be onboard and excited. At the same time if Wilson is rehabbing nicely... I'll be excited to get him back on the field! We just signed EW last year to a 3 year deal, not sure he gets cut unless the FO thinks he lost a major step.

CB Kyle Wilson, FS Antrelle Rolle, SS Bernard Pollard, CB Glover Quin. Woo that looks nice!!

Yeah, I hope Wilson comes back fine. I know these stats dont mean everything... but according to Pro Football Focus Eugene is rated fairly higher than Rolle, who in turn is actually well below Dominique Barber.

http://profootballfocus.com/by_position.php?tab=by_position&season=2009&pos=S&stype=r&runpass=&teamid=-1&numsnaps=25&numgames=1

And after seeing Darren Sharper was not tagged today.... I was a tad surprised to see him rated so well in this same site at his age. Though he was big for NO this year. I bet he is going to be expensive as well.

I just can't really get too excited about a CB duo of Sophmore Quin playing across from a rookie btw.... I mean the last time I got excited for a late drafted Sophmore CB.... Fred Bennett happened.

32 teams X 2 typical safetys per scheme says you want to be in the top 64( ie that means you are starting material).
Quartile 1:1-17
Quartile 2: 18-34
Quartile 3: 33-49
Quartile 4: 50-64

Pollard is #16: Quartile 1
Wilson is #41: Quartile 3
Barber is #50: Quartile 4
Busing is #75: outside top 64, #11 depth

Among all the FAs available this year, this is one of most intriguing news. If the price is right, we should persue and solve FS position(strong upgrade over Wilson) which allow us to focus on CB or DT in coming draft.(I am not sure if we make an effort to sign DR) Personally, I want us to look into CB in the first rd. and DT from FA(for short term solution). Should we sign Rolle, we can trade our 1st and obtain extra picks.

2a CB
2b C/OG or RB
3a RB or C/ OG
3b DT

Why the Bears may deviate from the norm and why Rolle may not be a good fit

The Bears may depart from their standard approach and become a major player in free agency.
But based on conversations with half a dozen NFL executives, the Bears don't really have any other choice.
Bears coach Lovie Smith and general manager Jerry Angelo head into a crucial 2010 season without a first- and second-round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.
One league vice president projected that the Bears would sign at least one of the most coveted unrestricted free agents available, a list that could expand before free agency commences on March 5.
The Bears could make a strong push to sign either Julius Peppers or Aaron Kampman, two defensive ends who are expected to receive deals with an annual average of $12 and $11 million, respectively.
In addition, Smith and Angelo haven't masked their desire to upgrade their depth at safety, and they appear primed to make an upgrade at running back and along the offensive line, too.
Safety, though, maybe a priority, and accomplished safeties could become available because of high roster bonuses and base salaries.
But one NFC general manager questioned whether Arizona Cardinals safety Antrel Rolle would be a good fit in Chicago. While he is one of the top-playmaking safeties in the league, Rolle thrives in a scheme that affords him plenty of opportunities to roam and make plays.
The general manager likened Rolle to former Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings Pro Bowl safety Darren Sharper. After intercepting nine passes for the Vikings in 2005, Sharper's numbers dramatically declined from 2006 to 2008, when new head coach Brad Childress implemented the Tampa Two defense. Sharper had eight interceptions over those three seasons but rebounded in 2009 with nine because the New Orleans Saints empowered him to play a style he prefers.
So unless the Bears are willing to make Rolle the league's highest-paid safety (Bob Sanders of the Indianapolis Colts currently holds that distinction with a five-year, $37.5 million contract that included $20 million in guarantees), then they may not be able to lure him to play in Lovie Smith's Tampa Two.
In Smith's scheme, the safeties often split the field in half. And given the struggles of the Bears current safeties, opposing teams would like pick on whoever is starting with Rolle, a Pro Bowl selection in 2009.
The other prominent safety that could be available is Kerry Rhodes, a 2006 all-pro who 15 career interceptions and six forced fumbles. Rhodes is a well-balanced player who has shown versatility in Rex Ryan's defense, which demands versatility from its players. But Rhodes fell out of favor with coaches in November - he got into a shouting match with his secondary coach - and he was benched for two games.

Arizona's eventful offseason will continue this week when the Cardinals release former first-round pick Antrel Rolle, an NFL source said Sunday.

Rolle's release will follow Kurt Warner's retirement and the Cardinals decision not to use their franchise tag on linebacker Karlos Dansby.

Rolle will become the premier safety in this year's free-agent class, but it is still possible the safety will return to the Cardinals.

Arizona would like to have Rolle back, and the two sides continue to talk about a potential return.

With less than a week until the start of the March 5 free-agent signing period, Rolle wants to see what he's worth at a time when the Cardinals are reluctant to pay him more than the $12 million that would be owed to him this season.

Rolle had four interception and was a Pro Bowl alternate this season. A starter on the Cardinals' Super Bowl team, Rolle moved to free safety in 2008 after playing cornerback for his first three seasons. He has 12 interceptions and four touchdowns in his career

I'd love to bring Rolle here and if he becomes available on the market and the Texans don't try to get him, well that will just show that the Texans management clearly will not be aggressive in free agency. We
ve had problems at safety since this team started and we didn't ever even take a stab at Dawkins or Sharper in last year's off season and both of them helped their teams out a lot. Rolle is young still and could help this defense a lot. There is no excuse for the Texans management not to be all over a player who is young like Rolle that fills a major need on our team.

Yeah, I was a little suprised we didn't look at Dawkins or Sharper last year, though I get being hesitant to sign a safty over 35ish. No reason not to make a stab at Rolle though. Same with Peppers. I get we just signed Smith, and I think Smith played well last year, but Peppers and Mario as bookends sounds exciting to me. Just my :twocents:

Considering how bad the FA market's going to be this year there's probably going to be big money paid out to average to just above avaerage players that will be out there. So yeah, there is an excuse for the Texans to not be major players in FA. I have no doubt the Texans will do their due diligence on practically every player in FA, but I highly doubt they're going to be big spenders.

They've basically come out and stated they won't be huge players in FA, so a few of y'all might be setting yourselves up for disappointment.

I won't be setting myself up for disappointment, because I won't be expecting the Texans to do much any way. They hardly do squat in free agency unless it involves an aging RB. We've had problems at safety for years and we ignore that every off season, so I wouldn't expect that to change at this point. Once ANtrel Rolle is available though and we don't even make a crack at him knowing how badly we've been at that position, that will show once again exactly what Rick Smith is about. I'll be really happy the day that we get a GM that will actually go out and address some needs in free agency for a change.

So you'd want us to spend stupid money on FA's? Sounds like bad business to me. Let's say we go out and dump an ass load of money on a FA. What are we going to do when a new CBA and salary cap is in place? We still have several of our own big named players to sign too. Mario's just around the corner as well.

If we went out and got top tier FA's 2-3 years in a row we'd be back in cap hell like the Casserly era. This regime has slowly gotten us out of the last cap situation by doing good business and building through the draft.

So call me crazy, but I'll pass on the Haynesworths, Peppers', Winslows, etc. that would screw us in the long run.

We are talking about Antrel Rolle aren't we?? Well at least that's who I thought we were talking about. I never mentioned these other guys you're talking about so I don't know why those guys were even mentioned.

Back to Rolle, he is a safety. A very good one that is fairly young and that's a position that's a very strong need on the Texans and has been since this team came into the league practically. The situation in our secondary is really bad right now with Dunta leaving. Reeves will basically be our best CB now so color me as "very worried." Our secondary was pretty bad throughout most of last season with Dunta as well. We have to find some guys in free agency to to help out our secondary. Rolle is a guy that could possibly play here for a very long time with as young as he is and he addresses a major need for this team. That would give us more freedom in the first round of the draft to pick the best player available. Paying Rolle to a nice contract wouldn't be some horrible idea when it's a major need on your team. Pollard's impact was pretty major last season and if we could get another really good safety who is young especially than that would help a lot.

We had chances to get Dawkins and Sharper both last off season and did nothing while other teams got themfor rather cheap and they both helped those teams out a lot. Sharper was one of their biggest impacts on not just their defense but their entire team and they just won a SB. We've got to fill these holes on the defense. I have no idea how you could call spending money on Rolle as stupid money unless he's looking to be paid as the highest paid safety in the entire league or something.

Once again, you're missing the point. My point is this; there's going to be less FA's this year, correct? So, in turn, that'll make average to above average players like Dunta, Bodden, Rolle, etc a hot commodity, right? What happens in the NFL FA market when those hot commodities become available? Teams over pay, which means the return on the investment will likely not pay out.

Short version = I don't think Rolle will be worth what it'd take to bring him in.

I might be wrong and it wouldn't be the first time, but that's the way I can see it going down this year.

I hear what you're saying, and you may be right that some players may end up getting more money than what they should. Rolle to me would be worth it though even if we have to spend a little extra on him. You're not going to get every FA or player at a great market value. Some guys, you'll have to over pay to in some situations. He's very young though and could still get even better and he fills a huge hole on this team. If we could sign him, then we could cross off drafting a safety in the first round and possibly consider drafting a DT or CB since we'll be losing Dunta and our CB situation currently looks terrible. There aren't many situations though where a young player like Rolle becomes available like this. I'd love to see Rolle and Pollard at safety together.

It's likely moot anyway. The Cardinals want to re-sign him after they release him. They're just trying to get out of the 12 mill he'll be owed this season. So, unless he truly bones the Cards, he'll be back in Arizona

I heard last night on ESPN that he is going to test the market. I also heard that he'd like to return to Florida if he could get the opportunity. It is a strong chance that he'll return to Arizona, but once tests the market (If that does end up being the case) it will be up to the teams to try and sway him.

Probably to some degree. But like I said, if it's a major need on your team and he's a young player that's really good and should be for quite a few years than he's worth it most likely. You can't expect to get every player on your roster for a cheap bargain. NFL teams that try that don't go anywhere. You have to pay for a few players on your roster at some point.Let me ask you this? If Demeco wasn't on the Texans but would come here if we paid him around the same amount of money that it will probably take us to extend him would you want to sign him if we had that big gaping hole at MLB? The Texans aren't out there signing free agents like crazy or anything. Going out and getting a young safety of his caliber and paying his market value wouldn't be anything stupid or crazy. Paying for a very productive player that should help your defense for years isn't hurting your team.

Rolle wants $8 million-per-season

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on March 3, 2010 10:09 PM ET
Conventional wisdom says that the Cardinals will make a strong push to keep safety Antrel Rolle, but they don't want to give him equal money to teammate Adrian Wilson.

Well, something has to give because Rolle wants Wilson money. More, actually. Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune writes that Rolle is expecting a deal that averages $8 million-per-season.

That's more than Wilson, Troy Polamalu, and Ed Reed earn on average.

Rolle clearly isn't in the same class as those players. It will say a lot about the uncapped year and odd inequities of NFL free agency if Rolle gets the money he wants.

I don't think that anyone in the league other than Snyder or possibly Jerry Jones will give him that much. I'd love to have that guy over here, but not at that price. Pass.

He's been released...........for now.

For now, Antrel Rolle is no longer a Cardinal.

As expected, the franchise released their starting free safety Thursday to avoid the $4 million roster bonus he was due had he been on the team as of 10 p.m. Thursday night and the additional $8.1 million salary due in the final year of his rookie contract.

The Chicago Tribune reported Rolle is seeking a contract worth $8 million a season, which would make him the highest-paid safety in the NFL. That same report said the Cards' offer was for an everage of $6 million a season.
