Wonder where he will end up. If the bulging disc isn't a further concern he would be a nice vet with attitude for a contender out there.

The New York Giants have released middle linebacker Antonio Pierce after five seasons, Pierce confirmed in an e-mail to the Newark Star-Ledger on Thursday.

"I'm doing great, feeling great," Pierce wrote in the e-mail. "Looking forward to endless possibilities. Loved every moment as a NY GIANT."

Pierce, who was placed on injured reserve Nov. 30 with a bulging disk, had one season left on the contract he signed as a free agent in 2005.

Pierce had 55 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble in nine games last season. He led the Giants in tackles the previous three seasons and missed only four regular-season games since leaving the Washington Redskins to join the Giants.

Wow, that's kind of a surprise. After an abysmal year defensively, I reckon the Giants are going to make some changes.

Jaguars released OT William "Tra" Thomas, as expected.

The Jags released three players with a combined 33 years of experience Thursday. Thomas, a three-time Pro Bowler and mainstay at left tackle in Philly for 11 years, had little left in the tank by the time he got to Jacksonville. He spent most of the season as a part-time player behind rookies Eugene Monroe and Eben Britton. The 35-year-old wants to keep playing in 2010.

Jaguars released WR Torry Holt, as expected.

Holt, who turns 34 in June, hasn't been the same player since knee surgery robbed him of his explosiveness three years ago. After not scoring a single touchdown in 2009, he'll struggled to land a starting job on the open market. Mike Thomas is the favorite to ascend to Holt's role, though the team could look to free agency or the draft and keep Thomas in the slot.
