The Houston Texans will pick up the $10 million option bonus payment in the contract of Pro Bowl MVP quarterback Matt Schaub, according to a league source.

The option will be picked up as early as Thursday and no later than Friday. Once the Texans officially notify Schaub of this with a letter, the quarterback will be obligated to Houston for the next three seasons at roughly $28 million.

The move comes in the same week they extended head coach Gary Kubiak's contract through 2012.

We knew this would happen, but at least it may be official in a few days. With a few additions, the Texans offense could very well be the best in the league next year. Glad to see ole Schaubby boy will be with us for a while. :)

Great. Way to lock up the foundation of the team. Matt deserves this new contract by far.

The "source" must be Bob McNair in the Chronicle the day after the Patriots game. He himself said they were doing it. This is one rare time where the local guys had it before the national guys... like, a MONTH before.

The Texans must pick up the option, it is a no brainer.

I am about 90% sure we had a thread on it before, but I m not going to go supermod and find it just to merge it.

Once we get the interior OL fixed, the running game will emerge and Schaub will take the next step in his development by cementing himself in the top tier of NFL QBs (Manning, Brady, Brees, Rivers)

I can't believe they did this! Don't they know Schaub is a looser!?!

It doesn't matter how good of a job he does if he can't win. You don't pay a looser like Schaub big bucks like that!

Bob McNair should just sell the team.

The deadline for when his extension must be complete is Feb 13.

Just an FYI. :)

Just think how much better he would be if he was able to step-up in the pocket.

What? . . . no more purposely mispelling his name?

Pro Bowl MVP season of almost 5,000 yards, glad we have him signed for next three seasons. Next up is to give him a line and a running back to go with Slaton. BTW, I understand Slaton's surgery went well and he is on target to return healthy (maybe back at his original weight and awesomness.)

That is good to hear. I hope they post an article on that soon.

Hopefully this is a subject that ALL Texans fans agree upon. Finally. :shades:

This was an absolute no brainer for the Texans.

I cant see Slaton being 100% coming off of this surgery until maybe mid-season (I'd expect later). He likely wont be able to workout at anywhere near his presurgery capabilities for a while and in this day and age fittness is a year round job for professional athlete's.

Taking any extended time off is hard to make up ....
