View Full Version : How do we get better in our division?

Its as simple as upgrading the running game and either find a new kicker or bring some legit competition to rid Kris Brown of the yips :)

All five of our losses were close but they were still losses. We didn't have the running game to keep the Colts off the field late in the game the first time we played them. Then the second game we inexplicably abandoned the running game despite averaging 5 YPC in the 2nd half. If we can't drain the clock on the Colts then we're playing Peyton on his terms.

The Titans will require a pocket collapsing presence at NT to disrupt CJ and VY before they can get going with their option attack. This will be difficult because the Titans have arguably the best OL in the league.

The Jags... well both of those losses were surprising to me imo. Make sure Schaub stays in the game and we can stop MJD? haha

Have Pollard knock the PISS out of MJD, CJ, and Manning. Problem solved.

When Peyton retires the Texans will own the AFC South

Not so concerned about the Faguars or that other team

We get better by getting bigger, tougher, and meaner on the O-line and D-line. We need to fix the interior O-line which will make our running game much better and give us a more physical presence. We also have need for a full time DT to play along side Okoye to give us a more physical presence against the run in the middle of the D-line. We need more of the tough guy mentality that Cushing and Pollard bring to the team and get away from this finesse team image.

Wait until 2011 maybe?

That's my best guess.

1.Fix the o-line
2.DL
3.Secondary
4. Get a RB that can convert 3rd and 1's and doesn't fumble.

Unfortunately with Peytons ability to avoid hits and injury he might last longer than Farve.

It's quite simple how we've been getting "pwned" in this divison.
Here's how each team has destroyed us over the years. See if you can
figure out the common thread.

Indy: Freeney, Mathis, and Brackett rape us while we're on
defense. Peyton, with his false counts, gets our defense to constantly
show its hand. Saturday and his linemates never get pushed back by our
D-line.

Tennessee: Their defensive line is 6-deep, and uses Chris Myers
as a doorway to Schaub. When we attempt to run the ball, they use
Myers as a battering ram smack dab into our backfield. Kevin Mawae's squad
never get pushed back by our D-line.

Jacksonville: Before this year, we could actually hang with
Jacksonville. Unless we get a certain element of our team fixed, FOR REAL
THIS TIME, they'll continue to beat us with their young O-line, which just
mauls our d-line back whenever they want a first down. The reason we
were swept by them this year, is because they now have credible receivers.
You give that linebacker they call a quarterback the ability to playaction, and
we're toast.

Here's the key to the common thread: "The shortest distance between the
two points of starting the game, to beating the Texans is....."

Each one of those teams, including Indy, have the ability to get physical
whenever they need to. We don't have such ability. Jacksonville ran
the ball down our throats to ice the game when they needed to. Joseph
Addai could run 10 yards for a touchdown when he needed to. Vince Young
could run for 1st downs whenever he needed them. As it stands now, and it has
always stood under the watch of Kubiak,we simply aren't physical when the
situation needs us to be. Most teams in the league are not aware of this,
and they get destroyed by the precision of our finesse game. Our divisional
rivals, however, are NOT fooled.

They simply smack our pretty little offense in the mouth, and we don't have
the bite to match our bark. This has to change. Kubiak's got one year to
do what he hasn't done in four...

Make us a PHYSICAL football team!

crap, took the words right out my mouth. till we can control the line of scrimmage on both sides we are doomed. by control i mean get one yard when everyone knows you need it and get consistent pressue without blitzing.

I like this thread because it's a very important subject. A lot of us ignore the division games, but those games are VERY important.

In thinking back on the second Indy game, we kept Peyton on the bench for quite a bit in the first half. That's pretty much the only way to beat them. I think our strategy for Indy has to be to force turnovers and keep the ball out of their hands. I really think this could come down to Pollard and our secondary, with Cushing playing a MAJOR role.

I think our secondary still has holes, but I think it could be fixed. In my opinion, that's going to be the key to hanging in there with Indy.

As for the other two teams, well, we're better than they are, for the most part. We just don't think we are.

Jax kind of scares me a little, because Jack DelRio believes in big, physical football players. His linemen tend to be huge.

Tennessee doesn't bother me that much. I think once we get our secondary fixed, we'll be able to rein in Chris Johnson.

I'm still not convinced the Texans have an answer for VY. On paper, sure.
Every time he takes the field against us though, he eats our lunch. That
option play he runs with Johnson against us is just SICK.

Ummm ... Vince eats our lunch by running . How many running QBs are in the playoffs ? Don't worry about the battle , win the war .

Yeah, I have to agree with this.

I know this is going to sound like a weak answer, but I think our issue with Vince is mental. He does his Mr. Cool act and our players are simply intimidated by him when he comes here.

It's not about how many "Running QB's" are in the playoffs, it's about
Vince Young keeping US out of the playoffs. We have yet to beat him,
and he seems to be in our players' heads like Peyton is.

When the games are close, they game is LITERALLY on the LINES. It comes
down to ONE yard. We get the stop, or we get the push. We have FAILED
every time a physical team NEEDS THAT YARD. Finesse gets you far
against less physical teams, because they get confused by all
the noise we do in the backfield of our formations. Most of the
teams we'll see in 2010 will just blow us up via the doorway known
as Chris Myers (I have NO faith in this regime to replace this cat in 2010,
until they prove me wrong.)

That's what people who say "Well, we'll always do good against teams
out of our division" don't understand. The NFC East, ALL FOUR OF THEM,
play like the teams we have trouble beating in SIX GAMES EVERY YEAR.
In 2010, we'll be playing the AFC South-style teams in 10 games. Not to
mention, we have the Chargers, Jets, and Ravens. That 13!!

We get physical on the lines during this offseason, or it's gonna be a
LOOOONNGG year. Schaub could be killed next year, and I don't want
that to be used as an excuse to keep this regime here. Finesse looks
pretty, until somebody gives it a shiner.

Getting beat by VY running options is a horrible example of physical team play. It is a containment/assignment issue not a physicality issue.

Yeah, I thought we defended the Titans horribly. Thought our design was stupid. You want to run zone, spy him, and keep him contained. May mean less pressure, but he wont hurt you if you run zone and make him throw. Also put 8 in the box to stop CJ. As I watched that game, I knew what we were doing wrong and we never adjusted to it.

I think Colt proved why you don't want your QB running .

The division is diverse that's for sure . If you build for the Colts , it may not stack up so well against the Jags and Titans .

The Jags and the Titans want to run the ball to shorten the game , keep it close , and win it at the end . That's why they won with VY , he moved the chains and kept the clock going . Bironas comes in and kicks a field goal and voila . The Titans aren't designed to be on the field that long on defense and as San Diego proved , you get up on them ... their toast ... like scoring on 6 out of 7 drives .

The Colts want to get a lead so they can unleash their speed . They want to put you in 3rd and longs . The don't do anything fancy , they execute .

If you get rid of the turnovers , make your field goals , put them on their heels or make them stay on the field , you go 5-1 .
