I've been listening to this cat for a while now, and he's the ONLY host
on our local airwaves to tell it like it is. He's on 790 from 10 till noon.

If you've heard this guy's show, let me know what you think about it.

He's the anti-Vandermeer of Houston. I like to listen to both sides, but
for the longest time, we've only got the HOMER side. In the afternoons
you get Lord and Mccain, but we didn't get the other side until now.

Gwynn's not a Texan's hater, he's just doesn't suck up to Texans' brass
like those other guys do.

Charlie Palillo goes without saying, and I'm only mentioning Gwynn because
he's new. 790 now has local talk from 6 am all the way to 10 pm. Good
radio, here.

I still turn on 610 sometimes but they are so silly on there. I mean stupid silly. It's hard to listen to.

I actually enjoy sports talk most when they take alot of fan phone calls..that peaks my interest most..I don't really care so much for the host's opinion but I do like hearing what the average Joe has to say. The guys that go to the games and spend the bucks. I'd rather hear that then listen to Marc Vandermeer talk about "Vanderkid".

The loss of Andre Ware killed that show, in my opinion.
And the loss of the "Sunday Block Party" killed the station.

They fired most of the good talk guys on there..and kept the others. Marc just annoys me for some reason; he's football smart but he's just so silly. And the new guy with him hasn't struck a chord with me.

IF I listen to them it's on Monday after a game usually because I enjoy the phone calls they take.

Actually a new guy just started yesterday. I didn't get to listen much, but he's worked here before and seems like a tell it like it is guy. Anyways it's local now.

As far as 610 goes yeah they lost it. I mean I don't mind them being homers, but man sometimes it was just hard to stomach. Sometimes they would just gloss over good stuff or give inadequate answers and just meh. BTW John Lopez is being called J-Lo.... really... thats sad.

I got tired of hearing about the "Vanderkid." Then, a few weeks ago, I was listening in the car and he told listeners to go to the "Vanderblog" and check it out.

I love listening to Palillo, but it sucks that he's more about Baseball and college hoops than he is about pro football :(

But yeah the guy from 10 till noon is pretty decent. 790 was going through a bunch of static periods for awhile and they had some real buffoons on (I think it was syndicated guys from whatever network 790 is apart of), about 4 or 5 months ago. Nice to see they've hammered it out better.

Charlie is such a dorky nerd..he's sure stat smart and he's always, always on top of names and what they did and when they did it.

It's funny how when you hear these guys on the radio and you try to imagine in your mind what they look like (I do anyway)...anyway Charlie was just as I pictured and so was Rich Lord.

I never thought Vandermeer would be as dorky looking as he is..I didn't expect a Cary Grant type..but he's not what I expected. He looks like a scrawny Chris Collingsworth to me.

Guinn and Matt Thomas are no nonsense guys that seem to be fair. They aren't homers.

They take alot of calls.

I'm glad that a sports talk station has finally decided to go all local.

They give callers priority over talking about there personal lives or trying to be stand up comedians.

It seem as though the station GM has finally gotten sports talk right.

The one thing I don't like about Guinn's show is that he tells you about 100 times during his show that he isn't like other shows. That makes him come off as a sensationalist to me, but his show is fun to listen to.

If you're in the cubicle crowd (sheep following along with the herd) he's great.

It's stoopid to say everyone is satisfied with this year's results. But it is what it is...

I said 9-7 before the year started and thats what we got. There are too many voids in the Texans roster to sit here and constantly suck your thumb crying about how YOU could do any better.

You couldn't...you can't with the Texans and you can't do better than those you report to at your job. Thats why they da bosses and you punch a clock.

Even John McClain said as much in his column today and by now I would venture to guess that the bloggers out there are puking back up what was written by him again.

Lol. Well, to be honest, not everyone who is promoted to the boss is smarter than the people they bypassed. I have worked for people who were CLEARLY promoted based on their politicing and butt kissing skills. They knew how to chit chat, but didn't have the full competency to supervise.

I once worked for someone who wasn't as smart as I was and it was the most mentally draining experience I ever had.

I like an open forum, so you'll hear Titan Rick and Lamont right after him.

He made a bet with Lance before the '08 season that the Titans would sweep the series with the Texans. If T-Rick won, John and Lance would have to buy him a lunch or dinner or something. If Lance won, Rick had to get Toro tattooed on his ass.

He called up after the Texans beat the Titans and said that he wasn't getting the tattoo because the Texans didn't beat the Titans, the Titans beat themselves. So, he got banned from the show.

He's the second person to get banned from the show for welching. I can't remember the other guy's name, but he was supposed to shave his head and wouldn't do it. He eventually acquiesced and was allowed back on the show.

Before the '08 season, TR called in and bet JHohn and Lance that the Titans would sweep the Texans. The bet was if the Texans won just 1 game he had to get a tattoo of the Texans' logo on his @$$. After the first game when they beat us he called in and went on and on about it. After the second game when we won he called in and refused to do it stating the Titans didn't actually lose the game. They banned him until he can man up on the bet. A bet is a bet.

What really gets to me is what he said about a successful business man achieve their mission and if not it is a failure. But I think, uncle Bob seems to me more successful business man than Gwinn and if Bob thinks Kubiak is worth awhile to keep with team as HC, would you believe Gwinn's opinion over Bob's as a successful business decision maker stand point?

I am not protecting Kubiak at all. It is just what Gwinn said about things that gets to me. He sure sounded like he is a successful business man and knows what he is talking about which I do not agree with.

There's so many way to make your company a success. For example, 5 year company project that is completed about 80% after 5 years and you see that this project can be completed in another year, would you quit and start with new manament to take over? Yes, some company may complete project in lesser time table and some takes more. This is strictly Bob's decision and currently he thinks this project can be completed with current management. Only time will tell if this decision was good or not. But Gwinn to question Bob about company decision? To me, it is very weak argument.

Although Gwinn seems like telling his honest opinion, you gotta realize that Gwinn is in media business and you can get more attention by criticizing the Texans and with perhaps higher ratings. So for Gwinn, it is a win win situation.

I feel ya on this, Samurai, but I'd like you to consider that football is
a two-headed business. On the one hand, you have to be profitable.
On the other, you have to WIN. Mcnair has been extraordinarily successful
at the money-making part, but has failed at the winning part. The
Texans are one of the five most-profitable franchises in the NFL, but
are the only franchise still without a playoff appearance. If this team
is to maintain credibility with its fanbase, next year MUST deliver a playoff
appearance NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS. Five years in, you must ride
with what you got, and there will be NO EXCUSE for missing the playoffs.

If they gotta win 12 games to get in, they better make DAMN SURE they
win that 12th game. If they gotta win the division to get in, they better
make DAMN SURE they split with the Colts and sweep the VY Titans and
the Tebo Jags.

2010, they have to get into the playoffs, EVEN IF they lose half their roster
to injury. EVERY PLAYER on the squad is now a Smithiak decision. Five
year plan, time to roll into the playoffs with NO EXCUSES.

got a link to back up your "one of the five most-profitable franchises in the NFL" claim? I've seen them listed as #6 on the most valuable list, but I can't recall reading anything that listed profitability by each team. Hell, I don't even think those numbers would be accurate as why would a privately held company ever have to open their accounting books to public scrutiny. Could be wrong though...

Also...I believe they made the most valuable top 5 list a couple years ago due to the new Reliant Stadium, and it's value to the franchise.

So if I understand your post correctly, they could lose AJ, Schaub, Slaton, Cushing, Ryans, Pollard, and Mario all to injuries in training camp, and you would still expect a playoff spot? That's just 7 players...well short of your half roster declaration.

I used a little hyperbole to illustrate my overall point, which is four
years with this regime without a playoff appearance have exhausted
any margin for error for them. Wholesale changes must occur in the
coaching and front office ranks if year five is much like years 1 thru 4.

This regime is all Excused-Out.

Totally disagree. I mean I don't mind hearing differing opinions on stuff but when they get these "glorified" callers calling in, the Titan Rick, the Longhorn Scott, the Collie's, the Brad in Spring Branch, etc. etc. I have no interested at all hearing what these morons have to say and it makes for bad BAD radio. Nothing at all entertaining about ignorance and callers like those have the market cornered on ignorance.

I know a couple of Texas exes that want to punch Longhorn Scott in the face.

got a link to back up your "one of the five most-profitable franchises in the NFL" claim?

Correct and correct. The Texans are ranked 6th, however in other years they were ranked 4th as you mentioned. The Jets and Giants surpassed the Texans with their impending new stadium value.

I understand your frustration DexmanC and I am certain that we as fan want our Texans to have an ultimate prize in the future.

What I am getting at is about what Gwinn said. To me, this guy's argument is so weak and not even worth listening to. You see, more we talk about his show, more people may listen to his show. Currently, we are doing free PR for him. He is good at talking(may not be so intelligent) and this is why he is in media business. It is individual choice to listen whatever we please and I won't waste my time listening to his show and that is all I'm saying.

It sounds like your argument is that Gwinn is in the wrong because he questioned Bob's decision. I dunno about wrong or right, but you mentioned yourself that there are many ways to make a company successful. McNair is in the business of football now and that is a business of inches. This isn't some project that will be complete. A project is undertaken every yr. if you fail to meet your goals each yr. and are okay without making changes that sends a strange signal.

Another thing a poster brought up. McNair is making a ton of money without putting a good product on the field. It doesn't really behoove him to have a sense of urgency.

Look at Mara, his team went 8-8 and he fired the defensive coordinator and line coach, Coughlin knows he's on a short leash to perform. I respect McNair for bringing football here, but honestly I'm not gonna agree with the guy simply because he's a successful businessman.

I listened to this ass hat for about 5 minutes this morning. I have no problem with a guy who has different opinions than mine but all he did was scream and talk loudly. Itís like he was telling me that he had nothing of value to say but b/c he was the loudest one in the room he must be right.

Even his argument was ignorant. He tried to compare the Texans to the Giants and how we should be just as disappointed in the Texans as the NY owner was disappointed in his team.

Dumbass.

First off we had a winning record and they didnít. They have a team that just won a super bowl. How do you compare that to a team that is coming off consecutive 8-8 seasons?

I felt like I was listening to Glenn Beck. I was waiting for him to stop shouting and burst into tears. Maybe he did. I donít know. I flipped the station. I will never make that mistake to listen to him again.

My point is when Gwinn brought up business example about how fulfill their mission. I believe Bob's has more credential as successful business man.
If I was in must situation in investing money between the two, I would take Bob over Gwinn. Is this more clear to you? Because to me Gwinn is nothing near successful as a business person.

When business project not met 100% within time table and may able to achieve in another year, I do not call that is a compete failure. When you talk about Sending a strange signal? Isn't this is why you manage company. This where management skills comes in IMO.

I hope you read my post again, I am comparing Gwinn and Bob since Gwinn brought up successful business man. And, I am simply saying I would listen to Bob over Gwinn and I am not trying to convince anyone else. It is my opinion of things since DexmanC asked about how we feel about Gwinn.

To me, Gwinn' show is not worth listening to and I would like to stop talk about this Gwinn guy. Because, I do not wish to do free PR for him period.

John and Lance Rule 1560 the game

610 screwed the pooch when they got rid of John only to see lance go too.

What did he welch on? It doesn't surprise me John and Lance would ban
somebody. Way back in the day, when they were on 610, they banned
another hilariously controversial caller named Collie. If ya'll ever heard
that cat, he makes Larry in Stafford sound "layed back."

We had to ban Collie for a little bit because he cussed out our female intern and called her a stupid, white b*tch amongst other things. He was way, way out of line. She was just a phone screener.

Cowboy Bill got banned for life for his blatant racism on the air. Titan Rick got banned for making a bet and talking about it non-stop all year long and then backing out saying he was never going to honor the bet anyway once the Titans lost to the Texans. Weak as tissue.

Thanks Lance for addressing that. I had always wondered about those
bans. Good luck over at 1560.
