I'm going to a 3-4 and need a NG .

1. Mount Cody other possibility CB Haden from Florida if we totally stink it up .

2. Brandon Ghee other choice will be Dan Williams if we draft Haden .

3. Toby Gerhart other Anthony Dixon or Charles Scott .

Or one of these .

Mount Cody is being labeled as a 2-down DT in the NFL. I dont like using a 1st rounder on someone who won't be a full time player. Joe Haden is someone I really hope we target

On a serious note .

“I’m pretty ticked off about the whole thing. The offensive line is costing this whole team right now, so we got to stop. (Ryan) Mallett’s back there, standing there, getting hit every play and that’s on us. It’s not one player; it’s a reflection of all of us. That’s gotta change. That’s unacceptable. This crap happened last year. It’s gotta stop. You got to make up your mind what you’re going to put into it. Our guys are going to get it right. We got some young guys in there playing. We got (Anthony) Oden in there playing right now, but he’s playing hard. We got to eliminate the mental mistakes.”

You better hope your linebackers can impact the QB because Cody will never touch him. Dan Williams on the other hand is 6'2" 327, often takes on two blockers and actually gets into the QB's personal space occasionally. Hope your guy does not explode into a marshmallow. How do you project your defensive line and backers in your 3-4?

I highly doubt that Gerhart falls out of the first round. Drafnicks' thoughts on him remind me of when Larry Johnson came out. Johnson was a highly productive back in college (2,000 yards in a season) but was thought to be "too slow" to be a franchise back. This caused him to drop out of the top 10 but he got picked up in the late first round.

I think Gerhart will also be picked in the late 1st round, and I hope its the Texans who end up getting him!!!

I think Spiller and Jonathan Dwyer may go ahead of him. I hope so if we draft later. It is still early, but I have him projected to us in 3rd. Hard runners with stats sometimes fall. He has moved up to 3rd on NFLdraftscout.com behind Spiller and Anthony Dixon. This list does not include juniors.

I wouldn't take him in the first two rounds because there's a bunch of good backs in the 3rd and 4th rounds . Besides RBs tend to have a short shelf life .

Here's some backs picked in the 4th rd , one was a 5th .

Le'Ron McClain
Leon Washington
Marion Barber
Tashard Choice
Brandon Jacobs
Darren Sproles
MeWelde Moore
Michael Turner

I really dislike when people pull out lists like this. There are dozens of busts from these rounds too. Fact is, good players from all positions get drafted in all rounds. Yes you can find quality RB's in the middle of the draft, but you can find quality players at other positions as well. It all depends on who you think fills a need best.

If Toby runs in the mid 4.5's, I think he will last to the second round. Times between 4.55 and 4.57 get him in the second. If he miraculously runs in the 4.4s, he is a first rounder.

People just see his size and assume he is a straight line back. He has very good agility, he is going to impress at the combine and pro day.

That's true but a RBs value is based so much on his 40 time . He could be really good in college but run a 4.65 and he drops . The thing you can't account for is vision and toughness .

Haha, let me know if the guy needs any more funds. I would be willing to cough up some money to get Toby on the team.

I see what you are saying, but I still think speed is a deciding factor. For some teams more than others. That said, I think Gerhart is a first round talent. A team is going to get a huge boost next year, I hope it is the Texans.

If Kubiac is going to insist on having a running game & I agree it is important, then fix the Oline and get a quality back that moves the pile and can punch it in from within the 5yard line. I think Caldwell can settle in at starter for RG. We need a huge upgrade at left guard. Myers will remain the center if Kubes is back and the ZBS is the offense unless we get a center that can call the plays for Oline. We need to draft a starter for these two position in first three rounds. Yeah you might get a player that will eventually start but players go in higher rounds because they are thought to be heads and shoulder above those in later day 2 rounds. You can come up with all sorts of "exceptions", but I don't want to go into next year hoping the medical alert alarm around our power backs neck goes off or hope that guy from Bodunk University may have a Steve Slaton rookie year. Don't worry about reaching for a player. If the guy you want to be a starter is there, draft him. Someone else may like him also and draft him higher than your "later" round. Glenn Coffee?

If it means signing Gerhart or Dwyer with your first do it. I think it goes down easier to give high rookie money to a running back or cover corner drafted in round one than a guard but do it.

My after Christmas mock .

1. Taylor Mays ... if he can't be a FS , he can be the fastest OLB on the planet . Besides if Cushing says he's the real deal ... I'll take him .
2. Dan Williams ... DT ... 6'2 and 330 lbs . Played in the SEC trenches .
3. Ryan Mathews ... 5'11 and 220 lbs . Why ... cause Fresno State owes us .

My after Christmas mock part deaux .

1. Mike Iupati ... OG ... the guy is 6'5 340 and moves like he weighs 290 . He plays in the ZBS at Idaho and pulls better than anything we have . He is also strong and could really help the running game which I see as the most pressing issue . He is the offensive version of Haloti Ngata .
2. Dan Williams ... DT ... 6'2 and 330 lbs . Played in the SEC trenches .
3. Ryan Mathews ... 5'11 and 220 lbs . Why ... cause Fresno State owes us .

Badboy ... The best CBs and Safetys will be long gone at this point . I think the biggest issue with this team is lack of a running game . It's no mistake that the Texans sent three defenders to the pro bowl . I think they rank 12th in the NFL now and that's after really stinking the first three games .

This is kinda like a fantasy mock . They would be real lucky to get 2 out of the three . I think if Williams has a good combine he'll be long gone because 330 lb guys who can move don't seem to last long . Mike Iupati just looked like a man amongst boys last night and got me thinking about it .

My point of interest in rounds 1 through 3 .

FS/CB ... Mays , Berry , Haden , Ghee
RB ... Spiller , Best , Dixon , Matthews , Scott , Gerhart
G/C ... Mike Iupati
DL ... Mount Cody , Williams .

Rd. 4 Scott (he falls due to injury and slow 40 time at the combine.)

Ghee Lindley in 1/2 rd or Wilson/Verner in rd 3/4 ?Excellent question and one Smith needs to address immediately and no game playing. Fans are on his side and if DR needs to go pull the trigger quick. I really think Reeves/ QUin can be the starters, but we have the Bennett melt down on our collective minds. A poster said Bennett had a personal issue leading to problems but he did nothing to recover. If he or Moulds (who?) could step up, I'd take CB off my mock. ALthough I am redoing my mock as things are a bit more settled, I am targeting Wilson Boise State in round three, but that is subject to change. I will offer a thread later on some players I wanted to evaluate last week. May have a surprise comment ot two. For now and picking at 19 or 20, I am looking at a left guard and power back in first two rounds.

Agreed. It was nice to dream. I don't think Iupati makes it out of the top fifteen now with the performance of the OLT candidates at the combine. The stink you now smell is all of the pro personnel guys who figured out if you don't have a top five pick, you're not getting a locked and loaded OLT this draft. Duane Brown isn't Ryan Clady. But after watching the combine this week I'm delighted we have him on the squad. Oh the smell, they've figured out they're not just smelling in it they and their QBs are sitting in it for '10. They'll be some reaching and panic going on at the end of April.

Switch three and four and I'm with you all the way there Earl on the second one. I believe it is a bit of a reach to expect Mathews to be there at the fifty two. I think San Diego will be picking runing backs early and often. they'll come away with at least two early, the first four picks.
