The Texans have signed veteran guard Tutan Reyes to the active roster and placed starting right guard Mike Brisiel on injured reserve with a Lisfranc [Marcus] injury to his left foot. They also added linebacker Darnell Bing to the practice squad and released linebacker Buster Davis.

Reyes, a 10-year veteran who played with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2007-08, helps to shore up a young offensive line that has been decimated by injuries at the guard positions. Season-ending injuries to Brisiel and starting left guard Chester Pitts left the Texans with Kasey Studdard, Chris White and Antoine Caldwell as their only healthy guards.

"Until we signed (Reyes), we had seven active offensive linemen, and that won't cut it in this league; it's scary," head coach Gary Kubiak said. "Tutan has played some football in this league, so that's a good thing."

The Texans are the seventh NFL team for Reyes, a 2000 fifth-round draft pick by the Saints out of Ole Miss.

"Some of the terminology is pretty similar to what I've seen in the past in the league," Reyes said. "I'll learn the offense, get in there and provide depth. If they need me to step in there and play, that's what I'm here for."

Brisiel started 25 consecutive games at right guard after being called up from the Texans' practice squad in 2007. White and Caldwell will compete for his spot in the starting lineup.

Bing was a first-team All-American safety at USC in 2005. He moved to outside linebacker after being drafted by the Raiders in the fourth round in 2006. Bing played in four games with the Detroit Lions earlier this season, recording four special teams tackles and a fumble recovery, and was released on Oct. 6.

...and in a related story (http://www.houstontexans.com/news/Story.asp?story_id=5692)...

With Mike Brisielhttp://assets.houstontexans.com/images/relatedicon.gif (http://www.houstontexans.com/news/Story.asp?story_id=5692&e=samuel.e.jones@nasa.gov#) out with a season-ending left foot injury, Chris Whitehttp://assets.houstontexans.com/images/relatedicon.gif (http://www.houstontexans.com/news/Story.asp?story_id=5692&e=samuel.e.jones@nasa.gov#) and Antoine Caldwellhttp://assets.houstontexans.com/images/relatedicon.gif (http://www.houstontexans.com/news/Story.asp?story_id=5692&e=samuel.e.jones@nasa.gov#) will compete for the Texans' starting right guard position.
White is a fifth-year player in his third season with the Texans. He started two games at center in the preseason and shared snaps with left guard Kasey Studdardhttp://assets.houstontexans.com/images/relatedicon.gif (http://www.houstontexans.com/news/Story.asp?story_id=5692&e=samuel.e.jones@nasa.gov#) against the Cardinals.
Caldwell is a rookie out of Alabama who was drafted in the third round. He has been inactive for all five games this season.
"Right now, I think Chris will start the game (at Cincinnati), from an experience standpoint," head coach Gary Kubiakhttp://assets.houstontexans.com/images/relatedicon.gif (http://www.houstontexans.com/news/Story.asp?story_id=5692&e=samuel.e.jones@nasa.gov#) said. "But they're going to both play. They're going to share duties, and as we get going, whoever's playing the best football is going to probably settle down and be the guy."
In five seasons, White has played in 15 games, 14 with the Texans and one with the Packers. He's filled in for injured players at various spots on the line and he's taken snaps on special teams, but he's never had a chance to start.
"He's seen a lot of football and played in a lot of games, so it shouldn't be too big for Chris, the first time out," Kubiak said. "And it's an opportunity that Chris has never had in his career. If he goes out there and lights it up and plays his tail off, Chris has got a chance for a good, long career. That's what players ask for."

Well damn... just how "far away" is Caldwell???
I don't think signing Reyes is indicative of how close or far away Caldwell is. The Texans had to have a body. And that's what Reyes is.

There's a decent chance that White and Caldwell both play well enough that the coaches put one at Center. I can hope, right?
