Play by play analysis 1st half Offense vs. Jets

II don't have time to break down all the formation, and it's Friday already.
I'm just gonna send in what I have.
Everybody can chime in and add their inputs.
If I have time I will incorporate all the opinions and edit the post.

1st Qtr

Houston Texans at 15:00, (1st play from scrimmage 14:52)

1-10-HST 20 (14:52) S.Slaton left tackle to HST 22 for 2 yards.

TXN Offset left, TE Strong right, AJ wide left,
A.D. right, motioned left, settled between Brown & Pitts

Jets 4-3 Under, SAM outside OD, double safeties.
Jets walked safety up weak side, LCB followed AD in to make it 9 in the box.

Pitts started well and was under the defender #91 Pouha, but somehow got pushed back a little and let Pouha get ahead of him to the playside.
Pouha pulled on Slaton and stopped his progress.
2 yd gain

Actually Pouha put a hand up and grab Pitts' face mask to get disengaged.
That should have been a penalty.
Without that, I'm pretty sure Slaton would at least make the first down.

Remember they have 9 in the box.
The RCB had followed AJ deep and the safety played back to help.
AD and D.Brown had excellent blockings on the outside.

2-8-HST 22 (14:10) M.Schaub pass short middle to A.Johnson to HST 29 for 7 yards (D.Harris; D.Revis) [B.Scott].

TXN straight I, strong left, split wides.
Jets 4-3 Under, SAM outside OD, dbl sft

Leach motioned to offset right and released, LDE followed (getting off Winston)
OD released, SAM followed.
MLB also dropped back, Myers turned to help Pitts on Jenkins.
WILL came up inside Brisiel to put a hit on Schaub.
Winston couldn't pick him up. (Since the LDE had dropped back to follow Leach, the WILL now became Winston's responsibility).
Schaub managed to complete a pass to AJ for 7 yds.

This one on Winston, but it took the WILL a little time to get to MS and we got a completion.

3-1-HST 29 (13:33) C.Brown left tackle to HST 40 for 11 yards (J.Leonhard).

TXN straight I, TE strong left, double slot receivers Right
Jets 4-3 Over, SAM on OD.

Chris Brown ran off LG.

D.Brown held off his man just enough to let Leach come up to help knock him off.
11 yd gain.
Good combo blocks inside.
Pitts then held off Jenkins, while Myers got up a good block on the LB.
Good blockings at and close to the POA.

1-10-HST 40 (12:51) S.Slaton up the middle to HST 38 for -2 yards (M.Douglas).

TXN straight I, strong left, split wides.
Jets 4-3 Under, SAM on OD, dbl sft

Slaton was to run left.
Jenkins with a great jump, he moved right with the snap (while everybody else had yet to start).
He got penetration, even though Leach came up to block, he couldn't stop Jenkin's momenum.
Leach thought he could, but he couldn't. It would have been smarter to help Myers clear Jenkins to the outside.

We optioned the LDE so there never was a cut back lane to start with.
I don't like this call.
Slaton, if he was smart, should have at least tried to go left.
He would likely gain a yd or two.

I know it's a wicked angle to make a cut, but he should know that we have already optioned the LDE.
It's not his fault at all for the following reasons:
Brisiel released but missed the LB.
Winston couldn't get a clean cut block on the LDT.
Both of these guys would add to make Slaton hesitate to veer to the left side.

We had good blockings on that side, but the right side was just a mess.

This one is a combination of Leach, Winston, and Brisiel and a good play by Jenkins.
You can put Myers on there if you'd like, but I don't think anybody can avoid that penetration, unless you have a big guy twice the width of Myers.

2-12-HST 38 (12:11) M.Schaub pass incomplete short left to S.Slaton (D.Harris).

TXN double TE, receivers split wides, single back.
Jets in 3 man front with both OLBs up to make 5 on the LOS.

AD motioned to slot right, inside AJ, and outside of OD.
RCB followed, man coverage under.
Jets blitzed 5.
TXN released both TEs and set up a screen pass.
The RILB dropped back with Dreessen, the LILB keyed on Slaton, he had no chance.
They could have Schaub pump fake quickly; that would have helped.
Incompletion (could have been an Int or a big loss).

Or Shanahan should have taken this call a step further.
Either have OD or AD run a slant route right into that zone between Slaton and OD.
Or a crossing route with OD picking off the CB.

This one is on the play calling.
Another receiver in that zone and we would have a medium 5-12 yd completion depending on the route

3-12-HST 38 (12:11) (Shotgun) M.Schaub pass incomplete deep right to A.Johnson [D.Harris].

TXN in shotgun, Slaton to the left of MS.
TE strong left, AD wide left.
AJ and Anderson slot Right.
Jets in 4-3 Over, WILL outside of Winston.
Jenkins then stood up and went back to LB level and became MLB.

They showed blitz up the middle with the other two LBs and we didn't have enough accountability.
They dropped two (of 7 men) and blitzed 5.
The RDE dropped back to follow O.D.
The WILL (who was on Winston) dropped back to help on Anderson and AJ.
I would have to put some of this on Winston.

Schaub took a hit as the pass fluttered out of bound.
That was the time to get out of the pocket to buy some time.
Heck, he might be able to run for a first down as well.
So a lot of this is on Schaub.
But on the other hand, if Schaub could have gotten off a clean pass,
AJ might very well broke it all the way with a great catch.

Some of this is on Winston.
Schaub wanted to try to make a big play so he took a hit.
Could have been a TD

4-5-NYJ 24 (10:20) S.Weatherford punts 43 yards to HST 33, Center-J.Dearth, fair catch by J.Jones. (The punt handtime was 5.1
seconds)

1-10-HST 33 (10:12) S.Slaton right tackle to HST 33 for no gain (E.Smith, D.Harris).

TXN 2-TE, receivers split wides, single back.
Jets 6-man front then shifted back into a 4-4 (from nickel pkg),
one safety played 8 yd back to make a 9-man box.
AD split left, motioned right and settled behind Winston (OD on the right of Winston)

Brisiel got pushed into the running lane.
Slaton tried to go outside, but OD couldn't hold onto the LDE.
Slaton tried to cut back to the left but again, we optioned the RDE.
(AD had gone toward that side, but they never had him even fake a block on the RDE).
Winston get up to the next level but was undecided and didn't take on any defender.
If he was to take on the nearest then that should have been #33 E Smith. The next one is B Scott.
That could have been a couple of yards gain instead of none.

Slaton could also had cut back right at the start to follow AD.
He would have a great chance to make the RDE miss in open space.

This one is on Brisiel, and some on Winston, a tiny little on OD.

2-10-HST 33 (10:12) M.Schaub pass short left to S.Slaton to HST 36 for 3 yards (B.Scott).

AD in motion, settled behind Pitts, CB followed.
We faked a run left then pass to Slaton.
Too bad, Leach got caught in the trash and couldn't get out in front to block.
Also, MS pass was low; that one could have been a long gain.
He was looking first for AJ who was double teamed.


3-7-HST 36 (8:50) (Shotgun) M.Schaub pass incomplete short middle to O.Daniels [B.Scott].

TXN in shotgun, Slaton on the right of MS.
AJ and Anderson on the right, AD on the left.
OD at HB (Half Back), behind and outside D.Brown then went into motion and settled next to MS (on the other side was Slaton).
I will call our right side the strong side (with 2 receivers AJ and Anderson).

Jets in 46 D (3-man front plus 3 LBs at LOS).

The down linemen:
Jenkins just outside Myers, in weakside A gap - will attack Myers
#50 Gholston played with hands down, directly on top of Pitts - will attack Pitts
#55 Westerman also played with hands down, slightly inside D.Brown - will attak D.Brown

The LBs:
#57 B. Scott lined up outside D. Brown, weakside - will come in free (MS ought to know this).
#52 Harris lined up just inside Winston, but looked straight at Brisiel - will manhandle Brisiel
#99 Thomas lined up outside Winston - will drop back into coverage on Slaton.

3 DBs played off-man on our 3 receivers.
1 safety played at MLB depth, 1 deep safety.

We released both O.D. and Slaton.

Brisiel was manhandled by a LB #52 Harris; luckily LB #99 Thomas had dropped back to follow Slaton;
Winston came to the rescue.
The up-safety flowed to the weakside to take on O.D.

Myers great one-on-one block against Jenkins.
D.Brown blocked his man well.
Pitts was pushed back 8 yd behind LOS, almost into MS

MS had no concept of where B Scott was. He would blitz from OD's side (5-man blitz).
Schaub was hit again by B. Scott.
He could have stepped up the pocket.
Myers had taken Jenkins to the left.
The double team of Brisiel and Winston had now neutralized Harris.
There should be 4 receivers in one-on-one situation.
Or Schaub could have run for the first down easily.
Bad read, bad QB's play!

O.D. motion to Left.

Jets in 4-3 Over, WILL close to LOS, weakside
SS Rhodes close to LOS on the strong side, but moved back as O.D. went into motion.

Jets brought up SAM #57 to blitz as ball was snapped.
Slaton picked him up.
Brisiel needs to decide quickly on who to help.
Pitts got ***** slapped by Jenkins who got penetration.
MS fired a quick pass to O.D. just enough for a first down, however.

1-10-HOU 43 (14:23) 8-M.Schaub pass incomplete short right to 20-S.Slaton.

TXN straight I, TE strong Right, receivers split wides.
Jets 4-3 Under, SAM on LOS.

Slow developing play action fake up the middle.
Leach ran into Myers.
Myers regained balance and tried to get back to help Brisiel on Jenkins.
(Winston had pushed his man inside just as Pitts did, so Jenkins was neutralized).
Brown got pushed right close to MS.
Schaub rolled right, incomplete pass to Slaton.
The pass was way low and behind. (Happy feet, not a good sign).


2-10-HOU 43 (14:16) 20-S.Slaton left tackle to HST 47 for 4 yards (99-B.Thomas).

Ball slightly inside the right hashmark.
TXN in offset I Left, TE O.D. strong Left (next to DBrown),
AD behind D.Brown, Leach behind AD slightly to the outside.
AJ split wide right, outside the numbers.

The LCB #24 Revis played press-man on AJ.
The deep safety (#25 Rhodes?) had to stay home (therefore cannot support the run quickly).
He never showed up in the play.

Jets in 46 Defense off the 3-4.

6-man front, from left to right:
#50 LOLB Gholston on the lefthashmark, outside Winston
#91 LDE Pouha on Winston, just slightly inside
#77 NT Jenkins on Myers, just slightly on Brisiel's side (the weakside)

(The other LB) LILB #52 Harris played normal depth (a little more than 5 yds from LOS) looking at Myers.
The RCB #26 Sheppard walked up to about 7 yd off the LOS, just outside O.D.
The SS #36 Leonhard was to follow AD after the snap. He lined up facing AD, about 5yd from LOS.

AD went right, straight at #50 Gholston (this temporarily froze him).
#26 RCB Sheppard mirrored AD on the other side of LOS.
In the short term, we took out another defender on this running play.
Now we have one-on-one blocking.
I like this call.

Winston sealed off the backside on #91 LDT.
(Needs to do a better job, but for the short-term it was OK).

Jenkins lined up on Myers, but slightly toward Brisiel's side.
He would try to penetrate the weakside A gap.
Brisiel came in and laid a perfect cut block (right in the thigh area) that brought Jenkins to his knees (hear that Pitts?).
Had Jenkins tried to work on Myers, Brisiel would be in position for the combo block.
Also, at the same time, AD was about to be right there behind the LOS and would hinder Jenkins' advance as well.
(another nice element in this blocking scheme).

Pitts with a good block on #79 RDE
Brown on #57 RILB Scott
O.D. on #99 ROLB Thomas

Again, Leach needed to watch where he was going.
He tried to get in between D.Brown & O.D., and in the process got his feet tangled with D.Brown, preventing him to keep locking on to B.Scott.
D.Brown had taken Scott to the outside.
If Leach had gone inside tackle he would have been in great position to lay wood to the RCB #26 Shepphard, most likely destroying him.
It would have been a bigger gain for Slaton, a first down was pretty much in the book instead of a meager 4yds.
And if Slaton can cut outside to the open field, he would also have plenty of room to run.

The other safety was nowhere in sight, even in the frontal angle.
At the very worst, Slaton would have him in one-on-one in the open field.
An examplary good chance for a TD.

3-6-HOU 47 (13:34) 8-M.Schaub pass incomplete short left to 11-A.Davis.

TXN single back, TE strong Left, one receiver slot Right, two receivers split wides.
Jets in 46 dime package (LDE, WILL, NT, MLB, RDE, S #33)

Good protection. AD dropped the ball.
MS needs to look to AJ. He was open further downfield.
There was one-on-one either for AJ or Anderson on the right, with the LB dropping back (but not soon enough).
We also sent O.D. long.
What's the use of springing 3 guys long and not looking for them when there's no blitz?
It's a possible first down, but you know Harris was ready to lay wood on A.D.

1-10-HST 30 (12:26) S.Slaton right end to HST 29 for -1 yards (V.Gholston).

Texans in offset I left, TE strong left.
Jets in 4-3 UNDER with SAM on LOS outside O.D.

Slaton would try an outside zone run weakside.
What are the Texans doing asking AD to come in and stand up a LB #50 (lining up at LDE) for that long?
Winston pulled around AD and whiffed on the block, missing the LCB.
(Winston should have turned upfield sooner.)
Doesn't matter, Gholston had overpowered AD to get to Slaton.
Another defender also brought up the rear quickly.
I don't like this call. We were short on men to block, and we also put a little guy on a LB for too long.

(Side note - B. Scott should have been called for a foul slapping at AJ's head after the play had ended, sending his helmet flying.)

2-11-HST 29 (11:42) S.Slaton right tackle to HST 27 for -2 yards (J.Leonhard).

TXN single back, TE strong right, receivers split wides.
Anderson in motion and settled just behind and outside D.Brown.
Jets 8 in the box.
UNDER front, all 3 LBs played normal depth.
One DB came in behind and outside the RDE, checking on Anderson.

Brisiel was weak, couldn't hold on to his man #91 who stuffed the running lane.
Winston needs to take the first man (Leonhard).
It doesn't matter, we were shortage of blockers on that side again.
Slaton tried to cut back all the way to the left.
We had number there. But since #91 had gotten past Brisiel, Slaton went back to the right.
I think its' highly likely that he could have made #91 miss, but oh well, it was a split decision.

3-13-HST 27 (11:00) (Shotgun) M.Schaub pass short right to S.Slaton to HST 41 for 14 yards (D.Harris).
NYJ-B.Scott was injured during the play.

TXN in shotgun, Slaton on MS's left.
TE strong left, slots right and left, one receiver split left.
Jets in 3-man front + 2 OLBS on the LOS.

Slaton in motion wide right (become a wide-out)
Jenkins shifted back to MLB position.
They would try the same thing as before, blitzing up the middle.

This is a good way to handle this blitz.
We have the O-Line motion to the right (almost like moving the pocket).
Then we released Winston, Brisiel, and Myers out to the right to block for Slaton.
Awesome blocking by the trio.
Similar to the one that we will run for AD later on before the half.
Too bad, #57 B. Scott chased behind and get a little piece of Slaton's right foot from the back.
Could it be that Slaton is not as explosive as last year?

They blitzed 5 and we hooked up with a quick pass to Slaton who lined up wide right.
Good strong running by Slaton there but does not seem truly explosive.

1-10-HST 41 (10:26) M.Schaub scrambles up the middle to HST 47 for 6 yards (D.Harris).

TXN in offset I left, TE strong left, split wides.
Jets in 3-man front + 2 OLBs + a DB a couple of yards off the LOS (facing O.D.) to make it the 46D in a dime package.
2 DBs played off-man on our wide-outs.
2 DBs played 5-6 yd off LOS at LB depth.
Single deep safety.

Could have AD run a slant inside to pick off the safety or LB, and OD run the crossing route outside left.
MS held on to the ball too long, 3-1/2 to 4 secs (almost got sacked by #99 Thomas - Leach's blocking was not good but not bad.

They blitzed 5 and had double coverage on all 3 of our targets as O.D. released.
Schaub needs to realize this and step up the pocket and make a run for it.
He could have gained more than six yards. There's a good possibility for a first down.
Or at least it wouldn't look ugly.

2-4-HST 47 (9:42) C.Brown right tackle to NYJ 48 for 5 yards (J.Leonhard, D.Harris).

TXN in 2-TE set, single back, receivers split wides.
Jets in 3-man front with 2 OLBs on LOS
2 ILBS played normal depth.

AJ motioned from wide left to the right and settled behind Brisiel.
The RCB only came in to just outside the formation to make it 8-in-the-box.

Good job by Pitts at POA
It was good blocking all 7 on the line actually.
AJ went back to the left, taking away the RCB and temporarily froze one of the ILB #57 B. Scott.
This allowed Pitts a split second to get up to the second level.

1-10-NYJ 48 (9:05) M.Schaub pass short left to V.Leach to NYJ 34 for 14 yards (L.Sheppard; D.Harris).

TXN in straight I, TE strong left, two receivers split wides.
Jets in their standard 3-4 with two OLBs on LOS and two played at normal depth.
One safety played 8yd off LOS checking on O.D.
One deep safety.
Both CBs played off-man.

Good protection.
We released O.D. to the left, sent Leach left and Chirs Brown right to fake a counter run.
The O-linemen moved the train left in the run fake.
Leach slipped out into the short zone and was wide open.
MS was a little late, it could have been more than 14 yds, perhaps 5-7 yds extra.
At any rate, Leach dished out some punishment on Sheppard.

1-10-NYJ 34 (8:24) C.Brown up the middle to NYJ 35 for -1 yards (B.Scott).

TXN in straight I, TE strong right, AJ split left, AD behind Winston.
Jets in their standard 3-4 as mentioned previously.

Brisiel lunged too early on the combo block, allowing penetration by Jenkins.
Leach got knocked back by the LB 57 Scott.
Pitts also got pushed back very slightly (but not really affecting the play).
Myers good on the LB 52.
C. Brown could have cut to the left between Pitts & Brown.

This one is on Leach & Chris Brown, a lot on Chris for not seeing the hole.
Brisiel was also bad, C.Brown had no room to go right.
A tiny little on Pitts, it would help if he had a better push.

2-11-NYJ 35 (7:43) (Shotgun) M.Schaub pass short left to S.Slaton to NYJ 17 for 18 yards (D.Strickland).

I've always said that O.D. needs to improve his blocking.
Without the hold, B.Scott would either get to MS or force him to throw the ball away, or scramble, and he won't get away.

1-15-HST 5 (2:43) (Shotgun) M.Schaub pass short right to A.Davis to HST 5 for no gain (L.Sheppard).

Again, O.D. missed the block on Sheppard on the quick pass to the flat.
This could have been a TD.
Such a waste on 3 awesome blocks. Winston had neutralized LB #57.
Brisiel and Myers had sprung out to block; Brisiel on the SS, Myers sealing off the pursuing LB #52.
D.Brown also good in his block, but Pitts let Jenkins went right past him and almost get to MS in the end zone.
AJ and Anderson occupied the RCB, the nickel back, and the FS.

Two-Minute Warning
2-15-HST 5 (2:00) PENALTY on HST-E.Winston, False Start, 2 yards, enforced at HST 5 - No Play.

2-17-HST 3 (2:00) M.Schaub pass short left to A.Davis to HST 10 for 7 yards (K.Rhodes).

Pitts got *****-slapped by Jenkins again. He almost got to MS, real close.

Slaton needs to look to pick up the blitz.
MS needs to step up in the pocket and wait for AJ and a first down.
Looks like AJ was able to turn to the outside past the marker.
If AJ can't get open, throw the ball away. What good does it do throwing way short of the marker?

Great job by our O-linemen.
Myers released to push #52 out of the way.
Brisiel also went up and turned around to block the backside on Jenkins.
Pitts dashed ahead to force the safety #25 Rhodes to slow down.
Slaton made one guy miss (#57 Scott).
OD & Anderson can do a better job blocking.
Instead they got in Slaton's way.
If those two had concentrated on just blocking their man, Slaton had a very good chance to take it to the house.
I imagine AJ had taken two guys with him.
Slaton could go all the way to the right sideline toward the endzone.

I've always said that O.D. needs to improve his blocking.
He's supposed to get under B.Scott and didn't, so he got walked back all the way to MS.
Without the hold, B.Scott would either get to MS or force him to throw the ball away, or scramble, and MS won't get away, especially with that ankle.

O.D. missed the block on Sheppard on the quick pass to the right flat.
A similar play as the one to Slaton previously.
This could have been a TD.
Such a waste on 3 awesome blocks. Winston had neutralized LB #57.
Brisiel and Myers had sprung out to block; Brisiel on the SS, Myers sealing off the pursuing LB #52.

D.Brown also good in his block, but Pitts let Jenkins went right past him and almost get to MS in the end zone.
AJ and Anderson occupied the RCB, the nickel back, and the FS.

There was no other defender back there, just an empty field.

I would have like to see how this play turn out.

With Winston moving back, I would say it's a pass.
We would have AJ in double team on the weakside.

We would have one of these four candidates in one-on-one situations on the strong side:
O.D., AD, Anderson, and Slaton.

FS played deep on weakside to help on AJ

Pitts got *****-slapped by Jenkins again. He almost got to MS.
Jenkins lined up at RDT.
Jets rushed only four.
MS fired off a quick pass to AD, a little high.
AD only had time to pull it in and brace himself for the hit.

Slaton needs to look to pick up the blitz.
MS needs to step up in the pocket and wait for AJ and a first down.
Looks like AJ was able to turn to the outside past the marker.
If AJ can't get open, throw the ball away. What good does it do throwing way short of the marker?
