To be honest, both teams looked equally bad. Neither one played up to what got them where they got to be last season.

Big Ben is something else in the 4th quarter though. He's a playmaker at the QB position and Tennessee lacks that with Collins at the helm.

It was a fun game to watch otherwise. I'm glad football's back.

From what I saw, anyone that can pass the football can destroy the Titans this season. I mean, Rothlisberger had 300 yards in the second half, and the Steelers were just destroying the secondary despite going one dimensional.

Yes, but Tenn historically has relied on being able to bring pressure with only their front four. That's their bread and butter, then they like to bring blitzes to keep you one dimensional.

That defense did not look like last years.

That defense did not look like last years.

Which means Haynesworth WAS a fairly integral part of their defense, despite Titans posters around here who said they'd do just fine without him.

And the middle of the field, just past the LBs, looked open-for-business all night long. I hope Walter is able to play, because he can eat up that area of the field all game long. OD, too.

I loved how tonight's game played out.

The Titans WR group has improved significantly, though.

I agree with you actually that the Titans did one hell of a job tonight, HOWEVER (I dont mean to be harsh so please dont take this the wrong way) But your doing to much of this, coulda, shoulda, woulda stuff.... Yes the Titans if they could have nailed the two field goals they would have won, however as we all know its extremely hard to make field goals in Pittsburgh so its not as easy as you make it out to be.... Not to mention if Hines Ward didnt fumble and the Steelers got a touchdown you can make the argument it would have been over right there... Both teams had chances to win and blew it.... It was a good game, but the Steelers were the better team tonight...

And in my opinion no Titans fan should get to cocky facing the Texans.... It will be a different type of game then tonight.... Everyone will admitt that both defenses played to the extreme tonight having something to prove... When the Titans play Houston it wont come down to defense at least not for Houston... They are going to rely alot on the passing game and look for Andre Johnson in that game to have at least 100 yards or more on the day... Not to mention the Texans O line is a hell of alot better then the Steelers. So I dont think there will be near as much pressure on the QB as there was tonight on big Ben, giving the Texans more time to make smarter plays. Also the Texans defense I think will hold their ground on this as well... They managed to hold the Titans to twelve points last year....

This is going to be an extremely good game, and I really cant see a blow out happening on behalf of the Titans or Texans, in my opinion it will come right down to the wire... I dont think the Colts, Titans and especially the Jags will blow out the Texans this year.... I am not running my mouth as a Colts fan that is for sure.

To be honest, the Steelers are the one team I would not want to be facing in week one (case in reference: Texans Week 1 2008).

It sets the Titans up quite nicely really, which is a bugger for the Texans next week. I didn't see the whole game, only the 1st and most of the 4th, but the Titans D still looked fairly intimidating....didn't see anything of their offense that really scared me though. If Collins has 35 pass attempts next week, I'm confident we can sit him on his ass, and cause a little bit of trouble in the pass rush.

Damn I'm gutted I'm at work during Sundays game!!! Football fever is well and truly underway!

Where's the smiley that goes with this question? Because I KNOW there's a smirk behind that question. Jeff will have them practicing with an attitude all week and will have an extra three days to remind them how behind the 8-ball they are.

I wish they were playing Indy after this loss because that defense will be looking for a QB to smash. I'd rather it be Manning instead of MASH-unit Matt.

I fell asleep and missed most of the 2nd half. LOL

Glad the Titans lost, but from what I saw they still have a very good defense. So, next week a good Titans defense faces an fairly good Texans offense, and a not so hot Titans offense faces an unknown quanity in the Texans defense. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I'm sorry, it's not that I'm agreeing or disagreeing with you. I'm just a little emotional right now. I never thought I'd ever see anyone say that (true or not).

I won't make a prediction on our trip to Tennessee until I see what we do against the Jets. I will say that Tennessee did look very good on this night against the Steelers but then getting up for a prime-time season kickoff game is one thing. This defense played intensely but will they follow this game up with another effort like this? That's not a given.

We held the Titans to 12 points last year here in Houston. In Possum Holler they hung 31 on us.

The grass is always greener, imo.

If our team had been the Titans and we had been watching that game, people would be in heree complaining about how our defense is too soft and how we never generate a pass rush and how we need to blitz more, etc. We'd be complaining about our run game and about our OL.

The truth of the matter is, the Titans have lost a LOT of pass rush. The Steelers have never been known to have a good offensive line. In the last half of that game, they barely made it to Roethlisberger. Of course they picked up a quick couple sacks on plays where he held on to the ball for 30 seconds, but when it counted, they couldn't get anywhere near him.

Their run D was dominant, but I'd like to see them do that against a team that can run the ball with authority. Lets not forget that the Steelers were terrible running the ball last year. they ranked 23 or so I think. The Titans run D was dominant last year and Steve still put up to 100 yard games on them.

Their offense looks just as bad as ever. The only big plays they had was when CJ made a ridiculous cut back that would only work if you can run a 4.28.

I think both teams looked very, very beatable last night

I know this doesn't really have to do with the game, but i think everyone who owns fitzgerald in fantasy should be shopping him before it's too late. the madden curse is back and its pissed!

Really?I thought their passing game looked like it had more big play potential and was efficient working different areas of the field at times. Their WRs were much improved. They were playing the #1 D and moved the ball well at times.

I heard Troy Polamalu was injured in the game tonight. Geez, the Madden Curse can be impatient at times. As soon as he steps on the field BLAM! Right in the knee!

It's a shame too because Polamalu was playing lights out before the injury. He made a fantastic play on Johnson on a run when the Titans were pinned back in their own endzone, and he made a one handed interception as the Titans on a deep pass to Kenny Britt (I think it was Britt). The Titans only TD came on the series immediately following Polamalu heading to the sidelines. I came away impressed with the Steelers defense for stepping up after losing such a crucial player. If Polamalu doesn't get injured I don't think this game ends up as close as it is, but he did get injured and now the Steelers will have to play without him for at least a few more weeks.

I agree, Collins, Scaife and Gage looked sharp. Britt will be a player.

BA has a secret crush on the Texans.

To be honest because the TOMB was finally put to rest our server can not take the capacity during the games.

Great game ... I was a little disappointed Cook did not get some time after Scaife went down. If Shankapatomus makes even one of those we win but that is how football goes. I think our O looked good against a top ranked D. We moved pretty well in the air though our run game was a little soft. I think White should have been used more. Looking forward to a home game against a division rival.

I'm sure a lot of fantasy owners (myself included) are a little PO'd at Bironas right about now. But I'd rather see the Titans lose than them winning, even if it costs me a few fantasy points.

Yes, I'm one of those that have Bironer and was kinda pissed. It was more the snapping and holding that caused the shank and block.

Santonio Holmes made up for Bironer very nicely. :shades:

Not to mention the Texans O line is a hell of alot better then the Steelers. So I dont think there will be near as much pressure on the QB as there was tonight on big Ben, giving the Texans more time to make smarter plays.actually, the Steeler line gave Ben lots of time. He just holds on to the ball so long it just seems like there is always pressure. Ben is very strong and has really keen pocket awareness as well as those sweet feets, so he really gets creative and dangerous when the game is on the line. Earlier in games he always seems to struggle, but that is mainly because he isn't a great pocket QB.To be honest because the TOMB was finally put to rest our server can not take the capacity during the games. that's not why the tomb went belly up. The webmasters who manage the site offered to host it independently but the team declined to continue hosting that board when the league mandated more control over the servers this last offseason.

What I was impressed with was that they worked the sidelines some and then came back and would hit about a 15 yarder down the middle to the TE. They really seemed in sync as to the gameplan and working areas of the field.

Cook was inactive, so wouldn't have mattered. Why do you think Stevens caught a pass (negated by a penalty)? Was like watching hell freeze over.

Titans basically played a tape delay version of the Ravens game. Damn good team that does just enough wrong to lose to a hated, heated rival. The two biggest factors that contributed to the loss I documented on the tailgate.com board.

1) Special teams.
2) Defensive playcalling in the 4th Qtr and OT. We stopped blitzing and rushed sometimes only 3 guys. Giving Roethlisberger 5 seconds to find a WR is just flat out suicide. No secondary, not every great ones like the Titans, can hold good WRs that long.

I hate moral victories, but there were a few. Team was not afraid in that stadium at all.

Really?I thought their passing game looked like it had more big play potential and was efficient working different areas of the field at times. Their WRs were much improved. They were playing the #1 D and moved the ball well at times.

The two biggest plays I can remember were:
1. The CJ cutback play where he simply made a non-NFL sanctioned move (totally reversing field) that somehow worked because he is bullet-fast
2. The long pass down the sidelines to Britt followed by the touchdown pass.

The first one was something they could do last year, but only succeeded once this game. The second one was due to a very long time in the pocket coupled with some nice pump fakes AND the absense of Polamalu.

The key portion of your statement is "at times". Their passing game didn't really kick in until Polamalu went out for the game. Even Collins made the point that they attacked the reserve because they knew Polamalu was sitting. The Steelers were already missing a starting linebacker, AND the passing game picked up after another of their linebackers hit the bench. Thats the ONLY time the Titans scored on the Steelers. So I don't know if its fair to call them the #1 defense

Last year, the Titans passing game was pretty bad. Maybe it took a little step forward today, but I'd wager that its still the same offense as last year with the exception that everyone knows how to gameplan for CJ better. I still saw dropped balls, I still saw Collins throwing wobbly passes, and I still saw problems in the red zone passing game

Lets add to this that the Tacks had the #3 pass defense last year in terms of QB rating allowed (69.2) and they allowed Ben to get almost a 90 QB rating with almost 400 yards in the air. That one INT was irrelevent since it ended the half, so it should have been even higher. For a pass first team like us (yes, we're a pass first team in my opinion) with a better OL than the Steelers (I think so) this is a very good sign

Dont get to excited lol, Steelers had the worst O line in NFL last year other then maybe Detroit, and yes Big Ben is known to hold on to the ball to long.... not sure why.... In my opinion a healthy Matt Schaub is an accurate passer and wont hold on to the ball nearly as long as big Ben.... And all I am saying is if the Texans O line holds their own they will give the Titans some problems, mind you thats easier said then done.

I am fully giving the Titans their props... Their defense and running game looks exactly as it did last year. Explosive!! All I am saying is Titans fans better not get to excited and write off the Texans as a win.... I think they will be in for a sweet surprise.

Ya good point.... However a healthy Matt Schaub is a very accurate passer, and will not hold on to the ball as long as Big Ben did.... Take that for what you will... can be a good thing or a bad thing, but I will bet anything saying the Texans put up more then 13 points next Sunday...

damn good post my friend. Last year, they were able to rush the passer effectively with only 3-4 people b/c haynesworth commanded lots of attention.

They were dominant against the run, but they definitely missed haynesworth and his pass rush ability. KVB was silent all last night & the only reason kearse got his sack is b/c he came free on a backside blitz. all the other sacks were b/c of rothlisberger or b/c they blitzed.

Cook didn't dress.

Great game that I thoroughly enjoyed even with the loss. I am impressed with the offensive play (Scaife's injury/fumble was big) ad the defense was lights out until late. As stated, the line won't be able to rush four at the end of the game anymore, and Cecil can't resort to the zone like he did; Ben picked us apart.

Looking forward to getting Cook in the game plan, a long rest and a raucus crowd in Nashville.
