View Full Version : Texans Cuts and Waiver Wire

Any early rumors out there on who's getting cut by the Texans. I think we'll be picking up a couple of pretty good DL off the waiver. Phil and Tenn are loaded so they'll have to make moves or release a couple on each team.

Question:
If we make our cuts and then pick up a player off the Waiver wire, can we then cut that player later in the day if we see someone we prefer?

Aren't WW transactions a 24 hour deal? We could probably rescind the claim if we want something else.

All teams have to be 53 man rosters by 4 pm EDT (I think) today.

I don't think it works exactly like that. Waiver wire works in an order. It's like the draft. Worst teams give first shot and down the line. I'm not sure if the same process works on this cut. Guys with current contracts are handled differently than rookies or free agents.

Once players are cut by a team, they are eligible to be signed first by the team with the worst record in the previous season (in this case the Lions), then the second worst and so on until you get to the best NFL team. So if a player is cut and the Lions don't put a waiver out on him, he's eligible to be signed by the Rams and then the Chiefs and so on. Of course, the team that signs him can't go over the 53-man roster limit so they may have to make cuts as well to make room.

If a waived player is picked up by a team and then released again, he goes through the waiver wire process all over again.

Only players with four or fewer accrued NFL seasons enter the waiver wire. Here is the definition of an accrued season: 6 or more regular-season games in one season in which a player is on the 53-man protected roster, IR list or PUP list.

Players who have completed more than four accrued seasons automatically become free agents if they are let go at this point in the season.

This waiver wire order is reset on September 28th to reflect the current worst win/loss records in the league.

Absolutely. He fell hard in the draft and then got hurt his first season. He had a good game against us a few years ago. I would love for the Texans to take a look at him, granted he's healthy.

Other teams have his college tape, remember he chose less money with us over the Saints because he saw the opportunity here. He was wanted and if the opportunity isn't here there's a chance it will be elsewhere. Not saying he's a lock to get picked up elsewhere but I personally wouldn't risk it.

I'm a little disappointed that Davis got cut also. I really liked his hustle & he wasn't afraid to put a lick on someone. Oh well, you can only keep so many linebackers. It sure is a change of pace to be disappointed about players being cut.

As for the extra roster spot, it wouldn't surprise me one bit to see the Texans trade Grossman for a draft pick. He's at his highest value right now. Given that he's only signed for one season & we'll most likely lose him next year, I'll be surprised if we don't trade him. Too bad we didn't get a chance to pay Favre back for his cheap shot. :D

I was thinking along the same lines. We missed out when Sage was at his highest value. Although I think the Texans are better with Grossman here as insurance.

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/502821

Character: Sheets was a good team-oriented type his first two years, but started having problems with the coaching staff over his fumble issues in 2007. Frustration boiled over as losses mounted in 2008 and when Sheets had his famed meltdown after the Northwestern game, attacking the offensive game plan and QB Curtis Painter in the press, he was banned from talking to the media for the rest of the year. To say that his former coach is not a big fan of his is an understatement. GRADE: 4.8

Competitiveness: Sheets shows good toughness and aggressiveness, the type that is a fierce competitor on the field, but he needs to control his emotions and work within the team concept better. He never throttles down inside and shows consistency in his running style and is not the type that will lets bumps and bruises affect his play. GRADE: 6.2

Work Habits: Sheets is a good worker on the practice field, but must dedicate more hours in the weight room. Whether it is a lack of effort or just being naturally weak, a player of his size should show better power than he does (only 15 reps on 225-pound bench press). His frustrations with the offense last year caused the coaches to almost have to hose down the huddle before the heated arguments spilled over. For a senior player, he needed to show better leadership ability than to trash his teammates. GRADE: 4.9

I see a lot of people mentioning Terdell Sands's huge contract. It may be more than he is worth, but overall, it is not a bad deal for the Raiders.

Last season he signed a 4 year $17 million contract with only a $4m signing bonus

Break Down

2008- 1.2m, 1.3m roster bonus (3.5m cap number)
2009- 1.3m, 1.3m roster bonus (3.6m cap number)
2010- 4.6m, 800k roster bonus (6.4m cap number) (Doubtful he sees this year of the deal)

I admit it always seems strange to have a whole roster position taken up by a LS, but on the other hand, that's the one positon that you really don't want to have someone make any mistakes - any time they do, it's disastrous.

What about Shaun Smith ?

He might fall into the Terdell Sands category. Could probably help us as a big body interior line guy but character issues keep him away.

Anyone remember the John Lopez piece for SI when he was naming the "indispensable" player on each team (excluding the QBs)?

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/john_lopez/08/20/nfc.players/1.html

"Detroit Lions, Shaun Smith

It sounds crazy calling this notorious attitude problem not even yet at the top of the depth chart as pivotal to the Detroit Lions. But it is the Lions we're talking about. And all attitude and distractions aside, when healthy and on the field, Smith can contribute a lot to Jim Schwartz' defense.

One of the key aspects of Schwartz' defense is funneling as much as possible into the middle of the defense, where the 6-2, 325-pound Smith will be.

Keep in mind also, the Lions acquired Smith on the cheap, one-year, $1 million, after he wore out his welcome in Cleveland, reportedly punching quarterback Brady Quinn in an altercation. Nevertheless, if Smith keeps his nose clean, stays healthy and plays to his regular level, the Lions were in desperate need of a gap-filler who can make plays. Smith is it."

He must be pretty bad if he's a DT and he was cut by the colts.

I drafted him in my mock so since I bragged so much about picking Cushing, I must admit the T Taylor pick didn't pan out so well.

I thought he looked really good last year in Denver in pre-season before getting hurt. He had a 4.7 ypc average... which coincidentally was the same as Andre Hall's. But what I remember of him, he looked really explosive in the ZBS.

Although, actually, if I had a choice, I would probably go with Kory Sheets (assuming he fits in our system, of course.) He's got more size.

Cedric Peerman was the fastest RB at the combine, running a 4.45. He's 5'10" and 216 lbs. He has small hands and could be prone to fumbling, but he definitely has his upside.

From the NFL.com scout report:

Positives: Short, thick build that appears capable of handling NFL punishment. Quick to the hole. Good lateral agility to make defenders miss. Runs with surprising authority. Can bounce to the outside and has the burst to get to the second level. Might lack elite stopwatch speed, but plays fast and can pull away in the open field. Soft hands out of the backfield. High effort player who makes those around him better.

Negatives: Lacks the bulk teams are looking for in a bell-cow runner. May have to be a change of pace back in the NFL due to his struggles in staying healthy. Missed second half of 2007 with Lisfranc surgery on his right foot and missed time last season with a bruised knee. Very small hands, which scouts fear will lead to fumbles. Didn't help his cause in this area with a fumble during the Senior Bowl.

Injury Report

2007: Missed the second half of the season following surgery to fix a Lisfranc injury to his right foot.

2008: Missed time with a bruised knee.

http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/cedric-peerman?id=79629#player-profile-tab-set-1:player-profile-tab-analysis

The part in bold could be a word for word description of Slaton.

Korey Sheets ran a 4.47, is 5'11" and 208, and is said to be an excellent goal line back.

Positives: Lanky build with the room for additional mass without a significant loss of quickness. Quick to the hole. Agile. Can make defenders miss in tight quarters. Quickly gets to top speed and can accelerate through a gap and to the second level. Patient runner who follows his blocks, but can stick his foot in the ground and explode through holes. Good speed for the stretch play. Good vision for the cutback. Despite a lack of prototypical bulk and leg drive, is an extraordinarily effective runner near the goal-line. Good hands out of the backfield. Experienced kick returner with the vision and speed to contribute immediately in this area. Four year contributor who has never missed a game due to injury. Enjoyed a solid week of practice at the Senior Bowl. Could have been hidden a bit by Purdue's reliance on the passing game and surprise at the next level.

Negatives: Lacks the bulk and lower leg drive necessary for grinding out the tough yards. Only had one season as the team's primary back. Operated out of a spread offense, and will likely be forced to acclimate to a more pro-style offense in the NFL. Marginal effectiveness as a pass blocker. Supplies good effort, but simply lacks the strength to hold up. Complained about the struggles of the rest of the Purdue offense -- specifically quarterback Curtis Painter -- to the press.

http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/kory-sheets?id=80684#player-profile-tab-set-1:player-profile-tab-analysis

Peerman was drafted in the 6th, and I believe Sheets was undrafted. What I'm wondering is if the Texans would have taken either of them over Foster is they were available.

The thing that would make Smithiak pick up either of these three is how they do in blitz pickup. In our offense, if they can't pass block, they're a liability.

You'll be happy to know that, according to the current depth chart (http://www.houstontexans.com/team/depthchart.asp), DelJuan IS the starting NT.

And I'm with you, I'd like an upgrade at FS over a nicked up Eugene Wilson or a very young, albeit promising, John Busing.

I don't care what position it is.......if it upgrades our team, it's Rick's job to pull off that move.

I'm not real high on Moats, I'd rather have a backup that can actually be a high quality pinch starter incase Slaton gets hurt and I think Sheets can do that....you can never have too many good backs and with the health concerns of C. Brown, RB is still a need on this team.

People mention the RB position because it is a lot easier to find a player who can help after cuts have been made. Also, there have not been a safety worth a look that has been cut so no one will mention that position.

Big BACK?????????? He's 5'11"/211. Slaton's 5'9"/215. It was questioned going into the NFL if he was big enough to ever be a power back or fast enough to be an every down back. I guess we know what the Vikings thought. But, of course, we have a different system. An interesting pick.

I'm a bit disappointed we released Tim Jamison and Buster Davis. I understand that we'll likely bring Jamison to the Practice Squad but I dont think Davis has that eligibility. I would've preferred we bumped Bentley out to SAM and had Davis as primary backup to DeMeco which would've resulted in cutting Chaun Thompson. He's been injured and covers more positions but I think Davis is a better Mike than Thompson is at anything. Bentley is certainly a better SAM and with Barwin we dont need him to drop down to DE in pass rush situations so much anymore.

I think this is a case of our coaching staff relying on a "jack of all trades" outlook rather than looking for QUALITY in any one position.

I hope we bring Jamison to the PS!!!

I think this is an effect of having to designate players as inactive for a game. When you can only carry a certain number of dressed players for a certain position it becomes important that they can play multiple spots. It's why Caldwell can be so valuable. He and Butler will probably be the only reserve O-Line active each week.

Salaries aren't garunteed after week 1.

They risk losing the chance to get Pollard but the risk is worth the reward. IMO

I'm actually feeling pretty good about Deljuan Robinson and Cody lined up next to each other on 3rd and 1. With Dunta's return and Diles play WLB, I think the only glaring issue on defense right now is our SS play and FS play while/if Wilson is out. I was hoping that we could get some help at safety. I'm really not looking forward to Barber starting, based on everything I've seen.

The other issue, I suppose, would be if the coaching staff continues to insist on Okoye playing 50 snaps a game.

I'd like to think that's true (I'd like to see us pick up Pollard), but the salary guarantee only applies to "Vested Veterans", and a "Vested Veteran" is one with four or more years of NFL service). Since 2008 was Pollard's 3rd NFL season, I don't believe his salary would be guaranteed for the full season if if the Texans had him on the week one active roster.
