McClain said on the radio that Cushing was hard at work at Texans facilities every day leading up to the opening of camp. Apparently a few days ago Cushing was told he was going to have to leave because he hadn't signed his contract--obviously players without a contract can't attend training camp (nor would you want to as you're not under contract i.e. not getting paid to be there)

Cushing was pretty upset about all this and flew to LA to continue his workout regiment, which is very rigid and I assume some facilities in LA housed all the equipment he needed.

My guess would be his agent told him he's killing all their leverage if he's right in our backyard ready to walk on to the practice field.

I'm just glad all these contract issues are solved. Oh wait nvm...:sarcasm:

Players are typically advised not to be in town until they sign. Agents tend to think it gives the team leverage if the player is in town and itching to get on the field.

Yes it is!

Now who do we have let out of the draft picks?

Edit* - nevermind, from the link in the OP.

Cushing is the last of the team's eight draft choices to sign. He missed only one day of training camp.

I'm a little surprised, but happy, this happened as quick as it did. I was thinking he would miss several days with all the reports about his agents having the 3 clients picked in front of him and how they would probably get them signed 1st. Just glad it's over and the rookies can go to work. Now, I guess, Smith will be working on Ryan's and OD's contracts next! We need to keep them in the fold. JMHO!

Here is how it went down...Cushing reported to camp per Kubiak's request (letter) the other day and when he got here Rick Smith told him he couldn't check in due to insurance reasons since he wasn't signed yet, so he went back to LA to work out with Ken Norton Jr. He isn't technically signed yet but he has agreed to terms and is pending his physical. As of this morning the last I heard he was on his way into town.

I think this has something to do with insurance, lawyers and what not. How remote the possibility, if Cushing had hurt himself working out at the teams facilities, without being signed it would be a legal disaster. It's somewhere in the CBA but I ain't looking it up. Same thing happened to Steve McNair if you recall when the Titans cut ties with him. They call that there thingy exposure.

Nothing against McClain but I like to see the guy who broke the story [and who drove out to IAH early this afternoon to meet Cushing and get more quotes and video] get the credit he deserves.

This Berman guy is a virtual legend it seems when it comes to scooping stories. He not only catchs Cushing at the airport as he arrives in town but runs his ole man down and also gets him on the record.
Anyway it sounds like Cushing and his farther are close which gives one some assurances that our top pick might be pretty well grounded if he's got that kind of family relationship.

The team told him he was not covered by any insurance and he could be on property. He was asked to go work out with Ken Norton Jr. in LA, that way he was supervised and not tempted.

At the time I'm writing this, NFL.com shows 13 1st round draft choices still unsigned. McClain wrote an article saying we should be happy that Smith and Olsen got Cushing signed and I have to admit, I agree with him on that.

Off the top of my head things that are a concern with Cushing:

1. Learns his coverages
2. Durability
3. Develops into a 3 down LBer
4. Brings the pain, attitude injection to defense
5. Helps improve run defense
6. Is a good human being off the field
7. Helps improve pass rush
8. Gets caught up in practice
9. Stays free of any banned substance. I'm not sayin', I'm just sayin'.
10. Develop good chemistry with his team mates

.....

14,178,933. Gets a haircut

If Cushing gets one, Dunta gets one. His hair is twice the length of Cush's.

Why forced?

Same here.

I don't know that I'd try and force anything onto Cushing. He might end up forcing something back upon the enforcers themselves.

Going to be interesting to see how this plays out.

David better pack a sack lunch and put some rocks in his pocket before heading toward Brian with the clippers.

Why forced?

its typical rookie hazing. No big deal. That and carrying the other players bags or perhaps buying dinner.

Has the NFL announced him as DROY yet? They might as well mail it, cuz he's gonna be named it.

On the surface it looks like a pretty good deal for the team. Doesn't seem to be an over pay situation.

Dunta is not a rookie, which is the only basis upon which Cush will play the part of Sampson.....................or maybe that's why Dunta hasn't signed...........out of FEAR.

I was reading somewhere that he was in on all the Nickle plays. Mario and Barwin were the DEs, Smith and Okoye were the DTs, and Meco and Cush were the Lbs.
