I am going on Sunday the 2nd and the 6th. Gil Brandt and Vic C from Sirius/NFL will be there Sunday and broadcasting live on Sirius NFL for those that can't go :)

Does anyone have an extra ticket for Sundays practice?

I predict that a rookie will be called a kid during Q&A with Kubiak by Day 2; Grossman and Orlovsky will be "neck and neck" for the #2 position going into the pre-season; an NFL production of Shanahan's development as a coach; and all Dunta, all the time.

I think GQ will continue to shine, Cush will be named very physical but will be very frustrated trying to cover OD 1 on 1.

Practice over... 20 minutes early.
Thoughts:
Nobody looked noticable sloppy to me. WBA did well in 7 on 7, but struggled a bit with bodies coming at them. Mario, and a few LBs had some sack opportunities.at have been a case of some D players playing at full speed.
My strongest impression is that the RBs looked quick and fast as a group. I only saw one carry by UFA Johnson. He didn't look particularly fast on that play, but I think some got a hold of his jersey going through the line.

I was out there and the first thing I noticed is Dan O is much better than Grossman right now . Dan has the most zip on his ball of any of the QBs and moves pretty good for a big guy . Rex threw some ducks and missed some guys bad .

I agree about Foster but would add Johnson has is very quick through the hole . I thought Brown and Moats looked good to but Slaton showed why he's the man when he excelerated on a sweep past everyone .

It's hard to tell alot of things because there's no pads so you make observations . So here's a few more .

Adibi is their most agile LB , even after adding weight .

I think Jacoby is Clifford Franklin .

Molden tried to stretch with the team and Kubiak called him over . You got to love the want to .

Yep ... Dan O rolled out to his right and hit JJ out of his cut ... he dropped it . JJ can't palm a WNBA ball because his hands are that small ... size matters here .

Any injuries today?

76Texan
07-31-2009, 01:02 PM
Texans head coach Gary Kubiak's Thursday presser.

(on players that had offseason surgery) "(DT) Travis (Johnson) and (CB) Antwaun (Molden) will be PUP (Physically Unable to Perform). Also, (TE) Anthony Hill will be PUP starting tomorrow; he's got a hamstring issue. I think the other two guys are going to be okay. I think (C Antoine) Caldwell will be taken off of that by tomorrow and (RB) Jeremiah Johnson. So that's where we stand right now."

(on DT Amobi Okoye's status) "Amobi's fine. He's passed the physical. But I want to be somewhat cautious with him coming off of the scope. You'll see him out there tomorrow morning. He'll be limited in what's he's doing. We'll go from there."

(on CB Antwaun Molden's status) "He's definitely PUP. We think he's a few weeks away. He will not be out there. We will work with him away from the team atmosphere. We will work with him individually. We think he's getting very close."

(on if DT Jeff Zgonina will be returning to the Texans) "I don't want to get too far ahead of myself but we are in the process right now of thinking about brining Jeff back. I am concerned, as we go into practice, with me trying to protect (DT) Amobi (Okoye) a little bit, I would like to keep (DT Shaun) Cody off the turf, (DT) Travis (Johnson) is not going to work for a period of time. So there is some discussion right now and hopefully we can get that done in brining Jeff back as part of our football team but there is some work to be done."

.........

What's the deal with Cody, anybody knows?

And what was wrong with Caldwell?

michaelm

Every run he made was one cut, and through the hole. Really impressed with how he got upfield in a hurry. He did pop one out to the sideline, but that move was after he was through the line.
It's hard to judge one players quickness and speed when you don't know who is going full speed, and who isn't, but just judging his cuts, and burst from those cuts, he looks to have well better than average foot quickness. He has a very nice move, kinda of a half juke, in traffic, and his first step from that move is already at or near top speed.
I don't want to get overly optimistic, but I though he was THE standout of practice. Also, they gave him a lot of carries, especially versus Jerimiah Johnson, who I hardly noticed.

IMO, the early competition is easily:

Foster 1
Johnson 0

I just got back to the office. I'll throw a few of my thoughts on practice. Keep in mind, it was a helmets only practice.

-Clifton Dawson's injury doesn't look good. He must've shredded it while making his cut while running a pattern.

-Slaton looks really good

-Brown, Foster and Moats look decent too. Even had a Jerimiah sighting.

-Schaub and AJ appear like they haven't missed a beat.

-DanO was by far, and I mean by far, looking better than Grossman. I expect Rex to get better as he learns the offense, plus he was running with the 3rd team most of the time.

-Mario was being Mario. Beast

-Okam got a few reps with the 1's and got some decent push. He might've lost weight, but he's still stands out as the largest on the team.

-A. Smith got some decent push.

-IMO, the WILL is Adibi's to lose. The dude's quick

-Barber came close to a pick. A nice diving play in front of DA

-Barwin had nice speed rush around the outside early on, but was easily handled most of the time.

-The Oline looked decent. Mario got the best of Winston a time or two

-Anybody know who was wearing #70 on defense? He was the only player I didn't recognize and the number's not on the roster. He was a DT that got very good push against the 2's and 3's.

I'll have more thoughts as they come to mind.

I'll just throw in a few thoughts without trying to repeat anyone Glover had one pick. Dan was 3x better than Rex for now but that might change soon. AJ was AJ he does not let go of the football for anything man. OD and Conner were both out there so a deal must have been made with those two. Mario was a beast out there taking Eric to school a couple of times. All three QB's were a bit shaky today as fans would count on being it was the first day of camp that will change. JJ is still butterfingers that's about all there is to say about him. As a group the RB's ran well Foster might emerge as the team's second RB. I'll posting a few pics in this thread of the practice.

Dadgummit! I knew I'd missed something important! The wife must have been jibber-jabbing in my ear when Glover has his pick. I heard the cheer, then turned back to look towards the field and it was over. Pfft! Women! lol

Must be him, unless he's wearing #60, LOL!

Jamison is really quite strong, especially considering his size.
Jeremiah, I think, is not 100% at the moment. Maybe quite far from it!
Foster, I've always think will emerge.
U. Tenn and Oregon St., once in a while would run a version of the ZBS that has the blockers and runners go a little more sideway than normal as compared to us.
The runner may run along with the train to look for an opening.
If he sees one, he cut; if not, he continues to the sideline.

Also they have a better mix of outside zone play than us; our bread and butter was off RG, then off LG.

Their coaches gave the runners the green light to run to daylight more than ours.

But both Foster and Jeremiah are capable inside runners, especially Foster!

Here are my random thoughts in no particular order...

Cato June looked spent. He didn't seem to have the zip that I was looking for. June also played all three LB positions. He mainly flip flopped with Adibi. Adibi would play strong while June would play weak then another Adibi would play weak while June played strong. Basically flip flopping. I found that interesting. Anyway, June looked really slow.

Travis Johnson was at camp. I never saw Barwin but others on the board said he was there.

Slaton looked beastly. I was stunned at his speed and vision. Really! Slaton has his act together. He is a bonafide starting runningback. Moats had good bursts but Foster definitely has the upperhand. Brown looked healthy but Foster looked by far better.

Duane Brown kind of was pissing me off a little bit. He kept sitting down on the coolers. He looked very spent halfway through the practice. It just bothered me to see him coming back to the cooler and sitting on it. I think he did that four times. Nobody else sat on coolers.

Jacoby will not make it out of training camp if he keeps up the subpar performances. He looked terrible. Still trying to juke after the catch. He needs to take a page from David Anderson who caught kicks and ran north instead of juking right after the catch. He also dropped some passes as well as bobbled a punt or two.

Schaub is in CONTROL. He looked outstanding. This is his team. He stood out.

Orlovsky looked great! I'm very comfortable with Orlovsky.

Grossman looked terrible. His passes lacked zip in them. The passes would begin to sink once they reach their halfway point. It seemed like the players would have to drop their hands to pull up a Grossman pass. It also didn't go from his arm to the WR very quick. More of a floater than anythin else. It also seemed like Grossman hit the wrong WR a time or two.

We saw Kris Brown once again. We interviewed him a couple seasons ago and he recognized us. He picked up our newborn baby and we took pictures. Yay!!

Training camp was loads of fun. No problems this time around either but then again all I did was watch the field the whole time. I let the wife take the kids around.

Kris is always nice!

It's interesting about June and Adibi; I guess we wanted to try different things to see how they work.

What I noticed from last year was that at times, we have kinda like an acttacking OLB and a stay-at-home OLB. Same thing with the DTs and the DEs.

Guys who sat down were younger guys.
I think last year Duane was all hyped up as a rookie, so he never even think about sitting down, and didn't pay attention to whether any guy did.
This year, he probably thought that he can rest his laurel a little.

Ah, gotcha. I was going to mosey on over there, but with no pads I didn't think the big nasties would be going at it very hard. When the pads are on I usually make it a priority to watch the trench work on the other field. I just kicked back in the stands today.

Were they just fly routes, post routes, crossing routes?

Did the receivers make any kind of move once in a while?

Any one had an upperhand on another?
As far as coverage and route running go?

Were the DBs more off-man or more in press coverage?

I'll be honest with you... Kubiak seemed a bit disconnected overall. He'd be standing far away from all the players. When #30 went down with the knee injury, Kubiak walked over there looking annoyed that he was on the ground blocking his view more than anything else. Did anyone get that vibe?

Good footage of training camp.

LOL. So, let me get this straight. Kubiak has Chris Brown practicing in the mornings and basically watching in the afternoons...and this is an NFL running back that's going to be able to get into the game and do something productive? This is one of those deals where you wonder why in the wide wide world of sports Kubiak and Smith have been able to saddle themselves with this guy. It just doesn't make much sense to me.

That's to be expected of a person with hearing loss in their life. I can completely relate to this. Don't misunderstand it to mean anything negative though. It's just tougher to keep up with group conversations so we generally just go in and focus on ourselves. He's only thinking about getting to the QB. Nothing else. Believe me. It's a positive thing.

Cushing wasn't there. I mean it wouldn't be hard to find him, he's taller than everyone else and is our only caucasian LB.

I saw Barber blitz a couple of times and some LB stunting. It also looked like when the o-line got beaten so badly it was because of some slant action by the d-line... HOPEFULLY...

Don't get too excited. We've done the same thing since 2006. We show aggression and a tendency to blitz in training camp, and the first two pre-season games. Then our passing defense is exposed in the first game of the season, and the blitz is put on hold.

Don't get too excited. We've done the same thing since 2006. We show aggression and a tendency to blitz in training camp, and the first two pre-season games. Then our passing defense is exposed in the first game of the season, and the blitz is put on hold.
I agree with what you said about us showing aggression early. I think you're making some sense here. I can buy it.

Ugh. I hate Debbie Downers though. Lol.

I hope Mario does what he did to Steve more often and runs more back to the house. The TE's are a lock pretty much. Mario played even better when they did the 11 on 11 than he did one on one against Brown.

Any sighting of Jamison (DE) , #61 Verdell (OLB) , #71 Watkins (OT), #33 Nolan (S), #41 McCain (CB), # 27 Richardson (CB), besides Quin of course!

I'm a little confused on exactly how many practices the Texans are having? I've heard several different things such as...

Kubiak cut practices back to one a day. Kubiak hates open practices so he reduced the number of opens. Etc etc...

I read Nick over at HT and he talked about Cushing's contract. Kubiak states that Cushing will be in time for the afternoon's practice today.

http://www.houstontexans.com/news/Story.asp?story_id=5400

Okay... obviously they're still doing two a days. Did they have a closed practice yesterday afternoon? Are those closed practices off limits to the media thereby explaining why no quotes or pressers yesterday afternoon? Does anyone know approximately how many practices are there going to be total? Both open and closed total.

Quotes on HT that arrested my attention.

(on WR Jacoby Jones staying in the team hotel) "The guys have a choice, if you're a veteran you can stay at home or in the hotel, but he's one veteran who didn't have much of a choice, so he's at the hotel."
What? Anyone want to elaborate on what he's talking about? I don't understand where this quote came from. Did I miss something?

(on the backup quarterback decision) "We really didn't bring them in to... we have our backup quarterback, right now it's Dan (Orlovsky). Orlovsky is our number two, Rex (Grossman) is our number three. We brought him in because we wanted him to push him and we expect him to make Dan better. If he outplayed Dan, obviously it's just like any other position, we'll make that change. Dan's taken the two, Rex's taken the three. Rex is trying to show that he's worth us keeping three quarterbacks. We've only had two every year we've been here. We'd like to be able to keep three. So we're just trying to get a look at him."
Sounds like we're going in with two QBs this year. Grossman is just camp fodder.

(on if he has goals to work with his father) "My dad and I are close. I made it a point not to go with him early on. I wanted to try to pay my dues and earn some respect, but some day, I'd definitely like to coach with him. Maybe I'll have to give him a job next year, hire him as my assistant."
I doubt it'd be in Houston though. Schaub spoke highly of Shanahan in today's quotes as well. Shanahan is a man on the rise. FAST rise.

Andre Johnson. I <3 Andre. He said all the right things.

from papabear

I was at the Saturday morning practice today. Thanks again to Nconroe for giving me tickets.
They're not in full pads so it's hard to really see much. Especially on the defensive side. Anyway, here are my mental notes.
-Adibi is noticeably bigger. He said he's gained 20 lbs since last year when he was sick and had trouble keeping on weight. He was spltting time with Diles at WLB. Cato June and Chaun thompson were splitting first team reps at SLB....Cushing signed this morning, but he wasn't out there.
-Mccain(rookie late round CB) is FAST....but he's small and had trouble jamming WR at the line. He also was lining up as gunner on the punt coverage team and had a LOT of trouble getting around the guys jamming him.
-Okam took some reps with the first team. Travis Johnson was out there, but limited and I didn't see him do anything. The coaches seem to be coaching Okam pretty hard...not that he was screwing up, but they really seemed to be trying to push him...like they know he's the only true NT on the roster. They did seem to get on him a little once though.
-Jacoby had two nice catches. One was an out that he had to go up and get and he did a nice job dragging his feet at the sideline. The other one was on a deep route where the CB had outside leverage. He did a really nice job leaning into him to create space back inside and had a nice little veteran push off before making a nice diving grab. Winston said he muffed a couple of punts at mini-camp, but he caught them all off the jugs machine today.
-Owen Daniels looked like a man on a mission....to get paid
-Casey had a great catch with two guys all over him. Gibbs was talking to him a lot on his blocking.
-Duane Brown looked really athletic getting to the edge on an outside zone play
-Demeco was pretty vocal, and he seemed to be enjoying himself. Lot's a laughing and smiling.
-glover Quinn looked decent at Corner....I think he's got the size for safety.
-David Anderson looked good catching the ball....but the best part was when they were stretching and he's singing and dancing the whole time while everyone else still looks like they are asleep. He cracks me up.
-Buster Davis is short
-heard the coaches atta boy Barwin a couple of times, but I really couldn't see what he did either time.

AJ's comments on day 1

http://www.examiner.com/examiner/x-778-Houston-Texans-Examiner~y2009m7d31-Texans-training-camp-report-Day-1

# Practice started with defensive unit walk-throughs on Field 1 (the field closest to the bleachers). QBs and WRs worked on Field 2 while the Hogs worked in their corner of paradise on the north end of Fields 2 and 3. Fans are able to stand beyond the endzones of Field 1 and 2, or sit in the bleachers along the east sideline of Field 1 (where the photos above were taken).
# Brice McCain won the 'first on the field' award for Day 1. He was accompanied by Glover Quin, Matterral Richardson, and John Busing.
# Troy Nolan and John Busing stood out size-wise among the safeties (similar to Brandon Harrison). We'll see if they can cover and run.
# Individual unit walkthroughs were followed by the 'movement' warm-up routine that was put in place last season. I saw no organized stretching after practice.
# Johnny Holland put the linebackers through agility drills along the lines of three-cone drills.
# Frank Bush had the look of a coordinator as he did his MBWA's (managing by walking around) among the defensive units.
# The Hogs are back in their little corner of heaven, trying to out-finesse and out muscle one another. Duane Brown appears to be ripped up compared to this time a year ago.
# David Gibbs tossed long balls to his DBs in simulated coverage. The first ooh-ahh of the day went to David Pittman who made a great one handed snag of a ball well over his head.
# The first groans came when Busing and Nolan consecutively brick-handed balls on simulated 10 yard outs thrown by Gibbs.

# Heard in the crowd: "Mario just has this other gear" as he blew by Eric Winston and Duane Brown on consecutive pass rushes. Yes, Mario looked like an All Pro today.
# Heard in the crowd II: "He's a lot quicker than I thought" as fans watched Arian Foster take a screen down the far sideline.

Well after a brief nap, I only have this to offer. It's difficult to analyze the whole scheme of things when they are just going through the motions with no pads on. I saw some flashes of speed from a few of the running backs, a deep ball from Grossman to Jacoby, but the player that made the consistent catches on the hard balls was Daniels. I say we take up a collection amongst ourselves and pay this guy :)

Nitro...I too was in the endzone when jacoby made that spectacular catch and I stayed to watch the defensive line practice ...LESS THAN FIVE FEET FROM MY FREAKING TEXAN LOVIN BATTLE RED #32 JERSEY i AM SHOUTING BECAUSE I CANT BELIEVE THE DAY I HAD.....

Did anyone see Antonio Smith go at the defensive line coach...its about time a coach lit a fire under a player. I am not sure what it says about Smith's attitude.

Mario was coaching up Barwin..who by the way is a good guy..but I didnt see him beat anyone off the edge.

Tim "In a china shop" Bulman is just that a freaking madman. He is Texan force unleashed. If that guy practices that hard.....play him now later and as long as he can.

I was fortunate to get some autographs and I think I was in front of gary but I wasnt sure (until I saw the pic on this thread....I wish I would have asked now.....sorry gary my kid was a handful..I will track you down tomorrow.)

Travis Johnson brought my kid out his shy shell and had him smiling. Sean Cody made his day and his attitude towards my son impressed my wife. Connor Barwin is nice and Tim Bulman is starting to be my favorite player because he plays hard and he seemed very appreciative of us fans

Jeff Zgnina was great he chatted up the line and talked with my son for a bit.

It took me a couple of hours to come down off the high....but guess what I get to do it tomorrow!!!!! see yall then and Gary I will track you down.

Just going to go and hope they don't try to turn us out. I don't think it's going to be a problem anyway. The Texans brass have their stuff together.

Looking forward to seeing Barwin and Cushing in the AM.

Yeah it was intense...the defensive line coach made a comment that if smith had made the sack they would have won the superbowl and the next play smith got blocked and I didnt hear what was said but Smith when at the coach and had to have two players block him.

Also Tim Bulman and an o lineman mixed it up..but Bulman was the one who got it going ..his motor was just higher...nothing ..the ol player cooled him down.

a couple of general comments I sent to a friend just now...

I liked how Buster Davis moved. He is so short, but he is fluid and turns well and doesn't seem to need many steps to get to full speed.

Deljuan Robinson looks bigger...actually he looked quite a bit larger than I remember him looking last season in camp.

Grossman looked exactly like the book reads on him. Wildly inconsistent with a sprinkle of really awesome passes mixed into some tight coverage....but that's with no pass rush. I can imagine how he looks when the heat is on. I bet "maddening" may be a nice choice of words.

Studdard also looked like he may have lived in the weight room last year. He really looked big and strong looking. He's still a little stiff when he moves though.

some people were asking me what I thought of this and that and honestly, I don't think we can glean too much out of no contact drills. The smallish fast/quick guys always look the best early in camp. Once the hitting goes live then the bigger more physical guys start to shine and the men start to separate from the boys so to speak.

Most, but not all of the reason he is doing some fullback work is that Vonta is attending a funeral and they didn't want Grigsby to get wore out taking all the FB reps.

Short review of things I noticed at today's (8/2) open practice:

Defense:

Brian Cushing - Moves around very well for a big LB. That was very evident on a particular punt coverage, when he beat everyone to the returner. He looks like the starter in the nickel D, as well as the base defense. Cush seems well coached and doesn't take a lot of false steps (something I noticed Ryans had trouble with as a rookie). I was impressed.

D-Line - Mario was a beast, whether he lined up on the right or left side. You can tell that he really enjoys playing football. Okoye was running 1st team, but went MIA about half way through practice. Don't know if he was just getting limited reps or if something came up, injury wise. After Okoye left, Robinson, Okam, and Cody ran some with the 1st team. Cody looks nothing like the undersized DT that came out of USC. Barwin was running 1st team in the nickel defense, but playing LDE as Smith moved inside next to Mario. My overall impression was that the D-Line outplayed the O-line, today. Was #70 Jamison? Looked like he was out of his league.

Linebackers - Ryans looked quicker than he has been the last couple of seasons, even jumped a route and picked off Schaub. Diles seems to be running 1st team over Adibi at Will. But, Adibi was very active with the 2nd unit and could still win this job. Didn't notice much from anyone else, and wouldn't be surprised if the starters were Cushing-Ryans-Adibi in the season opener, with Diles backing up every LB spot.

Secondary - Ferguson and Wilson were starting at the safety spots. No surprise. Harrison seemed more active, but still takes some bad angles to the ball. He did knock Boomer on his can on a sweep to the right. McCain (who seems very small) was tested early on a deep route to AD, and had solid coverage. Parsons also madea good play on the ball, running with the 3rd team.

Offense:

Quarterback - Schaub did not look sharp today. He missed some open receivers early, and was forced to eat the ball once during 7 on 7. Orlovsky ran the offense smartly, and put some zip on the ball when necessary. Found Anderson on a curl when he looked to be covered up in a zone. Grossman was the most intriguing QB. Saw the good Rex (nice touch on a deep fly to Martinez; hit Jones on a corner rollout under pressure). And the bad Rex (forcing throws over the middle, throwing late on the outs). My general feeling regarding the backup QB spot is that if the Texans had a lead or were close, I'd want Dan-O. If they needed to rally from behind, I'd want Rex. And hope I got Good Rex.

Running Back - I didn't really notice that Slaton had gotten bigger. I guess he carries it well. Still looks like Slaton to me, and that's a good thing. Chris Brown ran hard up the middle. Not surprising. Can Brown answer the bell for 16 games? That would be surprising. Foster looks and moves like a NFL RB. I expect good things from this rookie. Johnson looks small and unimpressive, to me (he fumbled late in the practice). But, I thought the same about Domanick Davis the 1st time I saw him in practice. Moats was solid, and I think he will make this team due to his versatility. Leach did not practice. Grigsby looks much smaller than I thought he would be.

Wide Receiver - Andre ran away from Reeves on a crossing route, early. He's a total mismatch against any Texan corner. Walter got open easily, as well. Anderson looked quick on the short routes. Jones looked good ( on a quick slant and later a WR screen). Not so good when he dropped an excellent pass from Grossman on the sideline. Oddly, Jones did not field punts, today. Glenn Martinez did return punts, and looked good doing so. Very crisp with his cuts and can get downfield quickly. Also was able to beat a corner (Parsons?) on a double move and hauled in a Grossman TD pass.

Tight End - Didn't see Hill, despite being removed from the PUP list. Daniels looked a little shaky with the ball. Still, he can get open at will. Dreessen made a couple of good catches in traffic. Casey mad a nice catch and turned upfield quickly. His ability to make yards after the catch should be valuable. But, he did drop an easy ball on a crossing route. Clark needs to make this team as a snapper.

O-Line - No Pitts. Studdard was the starter at LG. Duane Brown looks muck quicker than a year ago. Rashad Butler got out to the edge very quickly on a sweep and knocked a DB on his can. Didn't notice much from the young linemen, other than Washburn picking up a couple of false starts. There was one play during 11 on 11 nickel where Brisiel lined up at Center, with Myers at RG. Did anyone else see that? I hope there is a photo of this.

OK, it wasn't that short of a review.

Lucky,

LZ in his blog:

Amobi has been held out of many reps because he's still having some problems with the knee. I did see him whip Brisiel today in one on ones at one point today. Okam should be called "first rep" Frank because he is always very good his first rep and then does nothing on his second. It's like he literally runs out of gas after one play.

Houston_Fanatic

I thought Schaub looked a little flat this morning. I thought Orlovsky did pretty good and will make a decent backup. Grossman struggled.

Slaton looked great, so did Arian Foster. Jeremiah Johnson looked average. Chris Brown looked good - hope he can stay healthy.

I liked Glenn Martinez - made some good plays and looked decent on punt returns. Glover Quin looked good on punt returns also, but it is hard to tell when you don't have a full line coming at you.

Didn't see too much out of Cushing but it was his first day.

I thought Duane Brown looked in better shape this year and seemed a bit quicker. Demeco looked good, too. In fact, I would say overall the conditioning of the team has improved with their new strength and conditioning coach/program. Jacoby finally has some muscle on him and doesn't look so skinny.

Speaking of Jacoby - I like the way he is protecting the ball this year. If he had caught that pass from Grossman that was right in his hands I would be singing his praises.

Casey looked impressive - caught some good passes.

Demeco and Adibi looked very fast and fluid out there. We have a great LB corp this year.

Mario looked like a beast. I got a laugh when he chased down Slaton and karate chooped him on the top of his shoulder pads.

The defense outplayed the offense this morning, which is a good thing in my mind. We already know what the offense can do and are looking for big improvements on defense.

Anybody know who batted down Schaub's pass towards the end? I was on the other end and couldn't see. Was it Barwin?

We already know what the offense can do and are looking for big improvements on defense.

from what ive read, yes it was barwin. if the play you're talking about is a screen then yes it def was

seems to be a slight difference of opinion on whos the best backup qb so far (well LZ says rex, everyone else says dan)

martinez is interesting. alot of people are starting to notice flashes. the first i heard about him was in a nick ferguson interview a few weeks ago when he mentioned that guys like him & AD have to step up and make more plays to help aj. i just thought it was interesting that he was the one guy mentioned alongside those instead of DA or JJ

From the photos, it looks like Cody batted down one pass. Moats picked up the fumble. Williams swatted the ball out of Moats hands. Nice stuff.

Here's a picture of Williams, Barwin, and Smith tearing up the pocket right before Schaub's interception throw. I like what the defense is doing.

Lucky, #70 is Jamison.
He's small for a DE, just a little over 260.
He will need at least a year in some strength and conditioning program.
All I'm interested in at the moment is whether he can move around the blockers.

He may not even make PS, because the spots are at a premium this year, which is a good thing. But I like him.

I really had high hopes for Okam. He looks like King Kong out there.:kingkong:

LOL, it's actually Brisiel. Smith came in between Brisiel and Myers, and it ended up looking like Brisiel is just standing there. The pictures right before you can see Brisiel trying to block Smith.

Here's pictures prior to that one...

None of them look like they are doing a great job of blocking but in that picture the person currently not blocking anyone is Brisiel, not Myers.

I did not see the Schaub interception obviously. I'm still pretty sure Ryans intercepted Grossman as well. Maybe they were not playing 11 on 11 when the Grossman interception happened?

I really can't see Grossman making this team. He's really seemed to be subpar in the two times that I've seen him. Maybe I'm imagining the interception as a result? Lol.

Eh. No matter.

But wouldn't that mean that either Grossman was running the #1 offense or DeMeco was running with the #3 defense? Neither seems likely.

Wonder who the fourth DL was on this play...?
I only see Mario, Antonio, and Connor.
You're telling me that just those three guys totally collapsed the pocket like that??

...oh and where are the rest of these photos?

What number is he? I'll be out there tomorrow. There are three more if you include the open practice with the Saints who the Texans will send marching out right off the field when they get through with them. HA

I had/have high hopes for Okam this year since he came to came in much better shape, and supposedly better conditioning. But these initial observations are somewhat worrisome, since this was the same criticism which I heard in college and personally observed last year in his limited action.
I expect to kick Okam's ass until either his ass produces or gets kicked out of Houston..........I'm still hoping for the former.:mcnugget:

Yeah. I brought it up with Mary Jane and told her about Lucky pointing it out that it was Schaub. Mary Jane rolled her eyes and told me that she said Schaub threw the interception. I just immediately dismissed Schaub and started dissing Grossman for the interception. She tried to stop me and correct me but I was already ranting so she just went... eh. Lol.

My bad, folks!!

I really do like Grossman though. He could air it out at Miami. I just hated what I saw on Friday. I guess what I saw on Friday left THAT much of a bad taste in my mouth. I'll try to be more objective in the AM.

I have some thoughts on Martinez. He made some great catches over the past two days in camp and looked decent on punt returns as another person has stated in this thread. I like what I've seen from him so far although it has only been two days. I know how stacked at WR the Texans are right now. Does anyone have any other thoughts on this guy? Does he have enough to make a push on either of the wideouts who made the team last year? It is too early to tell right now? I am also wondering about number 84, Jenkins. Does anyone have any other thoughts on Martinez and Jenkins and their chances of being a Texan and where they might fit in on this team?

I saw Jenkins get a talking to from Kubiak when they were doing 11 on 11 routines. I think Kubiak's watching him and talking to him is a sign of things. I like Jenkins' hustle.

I tried to get over to you to say hi today but it was a little too crowded and we decided to wait then you went past the lines into the VIP section. Lucky dog! Anyway, it was good to see you watching practice today.
