View Full Version : Greg Ellis -- DE

What are the chances that the Texans might be players for acquiring Greg Ellis from the Cowboys either through trade or waiting until he gets an outright release.

Ellis is a former first rounder for the Cowboys who has had over 70 sacks in his career. He is surely on the down slope of his career, but has been productive every step of the way including a switch from being an elite DE in the 4-3 to still being a difference maker at OLB in the 3-4.

I think he can still play and make a difference in the 4-3 at his more natural position and the Cowboys are dumping him because of his salary, the fact they have Anthony Spencer behind him, & his grousing about the move to 3-4 OLB.

He's not a long term solution, but it would be dang nice to have another DL to add to the rotation in addition to Mario & Smith. As the Giants proved, you can't have too many good DL that can get after the QB.

I like our chances with Mario and Smith as our bookends and then Barwin and Bulman being situational pass rushers. I wouldn't want to trade anything for another DE, if he becomes a FA then maybe see what he's got.

The only reason I wouldn't want to do it is because he wouldn't be here long. That being said, I think he would be awesome to have because I feel like Mario could still learn from a good quality veteran like Ellis. Mario did well when Kalu was there to teach him, he could possibly be better with a guy like Ellis.

However, I also feel like there are too many only ifs with Ellis. He will go to another team only if they are on the verge of winning a championship or only if that team is a desparate team willing to pay for him etc.... Those things make me think he isn't wanting to come to us.

Ellis has been a more consistent player than the others we have tried as the veteran pass rushing specialist and could actually play DE in a pinch. If you don't want to totally trust that Barwin comes in and gets it then Ellis is a solid option. also, given our lack of pass rush history, do you really think having another a low cost contract is a bad thing?

I'm just not sure he's going to end up wanting or getting a real low cost contract. I do think he'll likely want to go to a team where he'll play his much more natural position as a DE.

Wouldn't surprise me to see him on a team from the NFC South.

How low are we talking? I wouldn't be opposed to bringing him in on vet minimum, but I reckon he's looking for more than what we should be offering.

Price is always an issue. I doubt anyone gives him money as he is a reserve/pass rushing specialist who is over 30. Doubt if he sees more than 1.5 to 2 million for 2009.

Let's say we happen to sign him on the cheap. Who's roster spot are you willing to give up for him?

As we saw last year with Colvin, he would have to "earn" a spot, but if you want me to name a name, Tim Bulman. Try hard back-up, decent rotational player, but is not a starting type (see Smith signing, see Barwin drafting).

I think Ellis is a real longshot, as these type of players (no super bowl rings, with only a year or two left) tend to go to teams which they deem on the verge of championship contention when the money is not going to be great and they have multiple suitors.

I'm not a football philosopher... do 3-4 OLB's translate into good 4-3 OLB's?

Would be ok if he went back to DE, but we already signed one in the off-season that doesn't have to re-adjust to an old position. Also don't think he'd stick with the LBing corps we've finally put together.

Anyone know why the 'boys want to dump him..?
what's the story behind that?
I thought he was one of there studs.

Never mind; found it (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4206691&campaign=rss&source=NFLHeadlines).

CARROLLTON, Texas -- The Cowboys and veteran pass rusher Greg Ellis (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=1445) aren't waiting for another offseason spat before splitting up, apparently for good.
The 12th-year pro with a recent history of complaining about his role, his contract, or both will likely play elsewhere in 2009, owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday.

I vote no. One malcontent (D-Rob) is enough. Besides, I'm not sure if he'd work in our 4-3.

He was released today. I'm glad. The guy worked hard but he also worked hard at bitching too.

The Dallas Cowboys, perhaps wanting to avoid another offseason spat with Greg Ellis, released the Pro Bowl linebacker Tuesday.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones had acknowledged last week that the 12th-year pro, who has a recent history of complaining about his role, his contract, or both, likely would be playing elsewhere this fall.

Ellis, the Cowboys' first-round pick in 1998, played in 162 games, starting 156 of them.

He was a good player for a number of years and I hope he hooks up with another team and does well.

Unfortunately he does have a bit of a reputation of being outspoken and that's fine but it does tend to rub some the wrong way.

He's a whiner and he's older, but man, the guy had 8 sacks last year... but how much of that was because he had freaking DeMarcus Ware on the team as well?

Waste of time. Ain't gonna happen.

We already signed Smith to a lucrative deal and drafted Barwin to rush the passer as well. The Texans aren't about to sign another DE especially at the price that he'll want.

This has no way of happening.

Maybe some were Ware gifts but he's always been a pretty good player.

I know he's had some injury issues but don't remember now what they were.

He ruptured his achilles the year before he became the come back POY. That's a pretty serious injury to come back from.

Linebacker Greg Ellis has agreed to a three-year deal with the Oakland Raiders.

Ellis was released June 2 by the Dallas Cowboys.

They have a fairly solid LB corps there. I wonder if they're considering moving him back to DE where, outside of Burgess, there isn't anything special.

The Raiders. What a shock.

The place where all aging good players go to slowly die while collecting one last big pay check.
