View Full Version : Brian Orakpo: Would you trade up for him?

First off, let me say I'm opposed to trading up & having to give up additional draft picks. But, if you felt a player could make a significant impact immediately, would you do it?

In my opinion, Orakpo may be the one DE prospect that could step in from day one & make a significant impact. There's a definte possibility that he could drop to the 8-10 spots in the draft, which would make him a little more cost effective to trade up for. If we assume we have to move up to #8 (1400 pts), it would cost us our 1st (1050 pts) & 2nd (450 pts) round picks to make that move. Of course, you could substitute next year's #1 pick & keep the 2nd this year.

Either way, you're potentially giving up 2 starters for one potential impact player. With a more aggressive DC, the young prospects we have in the secondary, the return of both Diles & Adibi, & any possible free agent moves we make this off season, making this kind of a bold move might be just enough to put us over the top.

Would you do it?

I would not do it.

If I could choose any player for the Texans first round pick this year it would be Orakpo. I think he would make the biggest impact on our team.

But I don't think we can afford to trade up in the first round. We have more than one need and we cannot afford to give up the extra picks this year.

Yes. be glad I'm not the GM. I'd offer up a three this year and next years #1. Throw in Weaver to boot.

Absolutely, positively not. I like him, but I wouldn't trade up for him.

Absolutely not.

He may be ranked the best DE now, but I'm not convinced that he will be considered the best DE from this draft at the end of next season or after that.

Even if he is still considered the best DE, the question then becomes how much better is he than the other DE's drafted after him.

Depending on when Orakpo is picked and the other DE's are picked there may be a great difference in the production versus pay ratio that could greatly favor the later picked DE's.

In otherwords, even if Orakpo is the number 1 rookie DE in terms of sacks at the end of next season, it is quite possible that someone picked later, maybe even in the second round, could finish within a few sacks of his performance and at a considerably lower cost.

I know sacks are not all that matters for a DE. I just used them for comparison purposes because they are easier to understand and quantify.

In reality one would want to compare how disruptive each DE was to their opponents and at what cost to their particular teams.

I like Orakpo for the Texans, but would not trade up. In fact the only player I ever wanted ot trade up for was Adrian Peterson as I felt he was a once in a generation type player.

Even if it meant for sure you would win the division out right and give the DBs on the roster enough pressure that they will become more productive ? I'm all for safe....and yes I see the world through orange colored glasses here, so I'm a bit prejudice in my judgment. But I truly believe that move gives us the conference crown out right. And if I believe that I'd be a fool not to make the move. So would Kubes and Smith. They maybe targeting the kid from A& M who knows ?

If we were to draft any DE to play opposite Mario I would choose Orakpo. But, I still wouldn't trade up. We are not in the position to just be giving away draft picks this year. We still have alot of depth that we need to add to and positions that need upgrades.

If that was our one major need then I'd consider it, but with needs in the secondary, at OLB, DE, DT, and a few along the O-Line, there's no way I would consider giving up a second or third rounder along with the first just to get him.

Orakpo is a stud for sure but he has had his fair share of injury concerns both this year and in the past. Can't sack Peyton from the sidelines.

Having said that I wouldn't be opposed to trading up for him but not nearly at the price that the OP has stated. The Jags managed to trade up into the 8 slot last year from 26 and they didn't have to give up their 2nd or any future draft picks. Throw out the old draft pick value chart that everyone always sees because those mid round picks are more valuable to teams now and because those top picks are very expensive.

I sure do hope he falls to us. Just checked out his combine and man he was impressive. Aside from what I saw at UT, he should be everything as advertised but I wouldn't trade up for him.

I also think the Williams kid from Texas Tech looked impressive.

The thing I like about Orakpo is that he just seems like a competitor. Like a blue collar, hard worker, does what it takes to get the job done kind of guy. Supposedly he doesn't have a quick first step, which is important for a DE, but he's relentless in pursuing the QB. Some guys can just get the job done, will he be able to in the pros against top notch LTs? Who knows. Pete seems to think so. I have my reservations but I'd love to see the kid succeed.

To move up in the 1st round you have to give up top picks, especially the closer you get to the top of the round.

For example, if we were to trade up from #15 to #12 we would switch 1st round picks and then give up our 3rd round pick and we would probably get a 5th round pick in return.

Or if we traded up from #15 to #13 we would switch 1st rounders and then give up our 4th & 5th round picks just to move up those 2 spots.

It comes at a high cost to move up once you get close to the top 10.

Yes I know, but you said you would be willing to give up a 4th or 5th round pick to move up.

What I pointed out was if we were to move up 3 spots we would have to give up our 3rd and if we were to move up 2 spots we would have to give up our 4th and 5th.

We'd probably be giving up a Starting SLB (#15 pick) and Slaton's insurance/backup/goalline/grinder RB (4th rd pick) to get Orakpo. In all actuality though, we'd probably have to give up a 3rd intstead.

If it guarantees us we make the playoffs, then sure. I just don't see how you can say we'd definitely make the playoffs if we do that.

As I see it right now: They could target Bennet from A & M, thinking with a healthier guy at Weaver's position they would get better production out of the slot. The USC DE fits that profile as well.Second day guy....fit what they reportedly want. Leave Mario where he is take more of a beastie run stopping guy for the other end.

The can Stand pat....take one of the OLBS Cushing or Mathews.....With what Cushing and Mathews ran today they should be able to cover either outside Linebacker positions. And push one of the current starters for the starting position....by September.

They could move back and Gamble on Gilbert for Weaver's eventual replacement. Which would mean a four month window to get him trained as a 4-3 DE.

They could move back and make a value...Brain Urlacker Pick and Take Conner Barwin.....who could cover three sore spots for us Rush DE, TE, and outside Linebacker. I think he too...after a year or so could cover both OLB positions.

Barwin's never done it before but just watching him he has it all. But so did Jason Babin...He's a Gary Kubiak, Mr McNair guy. Their going to love him. I think they'll fall in love with Cushing and Mathew's demeanor as well. All three are Texan's guys.

And of course the other option....wait and see if Orakpo or Maybin falls enough to move up and go get them. I don't think Maybin is fast enough to play on the out side at linebacker, not in a 4-3 anyway. Orakpo no doubt is. Orakpo is also stout enough to play DE for us. However....he's dinged again. Going to take someone with cajones for someone above us to take the guy.

Sidbury is a very high end prospect...looks the part...numbers say he's going to be great with some good pro coaching. Every three four team out there will be playing chicken the first two rounds with the guy.
So, I don't think he makes it to our third round pick. Especially with Green bay and K.C. Switching. But if we moved down and got some ammo to move back up again....might happen. I think this is true with Gilbert as well. If you want him, better move back and use a late first round on him.

Orakpo finished 3rd among DE's (behind Sidbury & Barwin) in the 40 with an official 4.70

He finished second among DE's (Veikune) in bench reps with 31

He finished second (Barwin) in the vertical with a 39.5

I guess there are no official times in for the broad jump, cone drill, & the shuttles.

USC ILB Rey Maualuga suffered a hamstring injury on a forty-yard dash attempt at the Scouting Combine.

Texas DE Brian Orakpo pulled out of position drills at the Combine Monday due to a "tweaked" hamstring.

I don't see that. four TEs ?...OD, Joel, Casey, & Barwin ? that's four by my count. Someone's out the door. If you take Casey or Barwin....they cover two spots and special teams. If they take Barwin one of the tweener DL's is out the door plus they don't have to draft a rush DE nor a #3 TE. If they take Casey....one of the Wr's and RBs is out the door. Casey is our H Back,#6 WR and #4 Rb.

IMO, DE is not primary need rather NT is. Stopping the run is more important IMO (again) as some of our back ups showed ability to get into QBs face, but non could stop the RB. Do we need a DE? Sure, but not at 15 unless Raji is gone and Orakpo falls to #15. Then I will be hoping Ron Brace is available in 2nd. If our DBs improved as most think + we draft a FS, stopping the run increases even more in priority.

1st Raji 2) Robert Ayers or Shaunessey DEs 3) Rashad Johnson FS (maybe available in 4th) 4th Gartrell Johnson Pwr back 5)best OLB or O.G. available

Some team (maybe us) is going to break a lot of peoples hearts when they draft Sidbury very early, those numbers plus his production are going to be hard to ignore. He could be the DE equivalent of Rodgers-Cromartie from last year. When its all said and done I could actually see us spending the 15 on him. He is raw but he has that Osi/Kiwanuka build and has the potential to really rush the passer.

Well no disrespect, but every scout at the combine has him making the move to linebacker. Somebody is wrong here Earl. And considering his production in college, He could be on our radar. and I know Casey is a board favorite, I wouldn't take him either as an H-back. Not with Slaton on the team. Gotta be able to block.
