The New Orleans Saints, as expected, parted ways with long-time running back Deuce McAllister by giving him his release Tuesday.

McAllister's release comes one day after the Jacksonville Jaguars cut the franchise's all-time leading running back, Fred Taylor. With a $7.5 million cap number and McAllister owed more than $5 million this fall, the Saints figured to either cut his salary or release him.

A news conference was scheduled for Tuesday.

His release puts the Saints under the $123 million salary cap.

"Decisions like this are always very difficult ones to make," executive vice president/general manager Mickey Loomis said in a statement before the news conference.

"Deuce has epitomized hard work, leadership and productivity throughout his career and has been a source of great pride for all of us associated with the team. His records and accomplishments on the field speak for themselves about the type of player he was in a Saints uniform," Loomis said. "He truly ranks as one of the greatest players in our club's history, and we are very respectful of everything he has meant to the Saints and our community."

In eight seasons in New Orleans, McAllister rushed for 6,096 yards on 1,429 carries.

Knee injuries have slowed him down the past couple of seasons. In his past two years, McAllister had only 131 carries and 510 yards.

I hope he catches on with another team so I can continue rooting for him.

My favorite all-time Saint.

Not for that kind of money.

I know it is unfair to assume every vet FA RB is Ahman Green but even he wishes he could be as healthy as Ahman Green was for our team.

I thought there was a reason there was a FA/Players Released thread is stickied?

No offense to the original poster, but there's getting ready to be a boatload of movement starting next week and it'd be nice to have everything funneled into one thread.

Then again, I'm just a little orange horse so what do I know? :shades:

UUuuum Deauce is exactly what Green was before he came here but even worse. Deuce has had several injury plauged seasons and has a ton of miles on him. Green if I'm not mistaken at least was coming off of a 1,000 yard season when he came here. Deuce wasn't even close to that. If he would like to come here for dirt cheap dollars, then fine, but other than that I wouldn't want the Texans to waste any money on a guy like that he will for sure be on and off the injured list.

Ya but he wouldnt get "that kind of money" but if he would go for a reasonable price like I said, would love to have him with Slaton.

The knee injuries are a huge concern, no doubt. However, Deuce has six hundred fewer carries than AG.

Doesn't really matter. He's battled injuries continuously for the last 3 years and I see no sign of that trend ending. He's on his last legs, the same as Green was when we signed him. We need a younger back who can contribute, not a veteran who will spend more time on the IR than on the field.

Don't get me wrong Deuce is a great back, but we just don't need another veteran RB experiment. RB is the easiest position to draft and replace. Getting a young guy will help the team out more at this point than signing Deuce would.

In a 8 year career he has had only two season in which he played all 16 games. Anyone who blasted the Green signing and says they would like Deuce ... never mind I will leave it hanging like that.

Yeah, you're prolly right. His gamelogs from last season aren't too impressive.

Me too!

Unfortunately the time machine isn't ready yet and so we can't go get Deuce from 5 years ago. Looks like we need to pass on this one.

Sounds like when we were going to sign Ahman Green. I'll pass on Deuce. That being said, you never know he might have 1 good year left.

Green, Taylor, McAllister, are all the same. Old RB's that get hurt way to often.

Rather not sit through Green part II.

I agree he does get hurt a lot but when he is healthy he is good.
Plus we wouldnt have to rely on him to be our starting RB with Slaton in the mix.

Well if we are using a time machine, lets go back in time and sign Earl right out of college! Now HE would be a great compliment to Slaton!
Oh, and I hear that kid Ronnie Lott out of USC is pretty good too. Maybe he'd be a good one to sign too!

We would have an okay pair of safeties if we could go back and get Lott and that Atwater kid from Arkansas.

I was thinking that with our new safety, we could use a solid young DE to help out Mario. I am hearing some positive things about this young DE from Tennessee. He is a guy we oughta consider in the draft. I believe he wears #92. His name is Reginald Howard White. I think his friends call him Reggie...
