Depends on what they look to replace him with. If it's Frank Bush, it'll be forever before we know. If it's somebody else, then they might dismiss him rather quickly.

Count me in the crowd that hopes Smith is gone. Only person who really deserves to be kept on the defensive staff is Rhodes. There will be some big names available.

Thorn real curious as to why you would want Phillips to come in? We don't have the personnel to execute the 3-4 unless we overhaul the LBers and I'd really hate to see Mario wasted as a 3-4 end.

Don't know why Rhodes deserves to stay, other than he's only been here one season. I think Johnny Holland has done a decent job developing talent. That's really the only good thing I can say regarding this defensive staff.

And I agree that switching to a 34 defense would be ludicrous. The Texans don't have one speed rusher on the team, and the 34 requires two. And Mario ould be wastd as a 34 DE. The Texans need a true 43 RDE so that Mario can move to the LDE full time.

Wade is a heck of a DC, but he is a 34 guy not a 43, so I'm not sure how well he would do. Like you, I expect it to be Bush though. Anyone know his defensive philosophy? Does he like to blitz etc.

I believe him. Don't think a fellow long-time Texanstalk member would lie about something that is this crucial and put his reputation on the line.

Anyways, I hope Ray Rhodes, Johnny Holland, Frank Bush, and maybeee Jethro Franklin stays.

Everyone else can go.

I still wish Kubiak would've fired Smith at half time, and have executor escort him out of the stadium on handcuff and shackles, ala Medieval times, with fans booing and throwing tomatoes(drinks, popcorns?) at him on the way out.

That's how you go into the off-season with dramatic fashion.

PFW was speculating about this right before we went on our 4 game win streak.

I don't know if the Oakland game sealed it but when you look at the numbers at the end of the season they are going to be bad again. Since Kubiak has been here there has been a nice progression on offense but none on defense. If anything slight regression. Richard got three years, I hope the FO is ready to move forward.

Does the Comical ever come up with stories like this?

Bears defensive coordinator Bob Babich on the hot seat
HOUSTON—Given its dismal yearlong performance, the Bears' defense figures to feature several new faces next season.

But what about the future of defensive coordinator Bob Babich?

"You'll have to talk to the coach about that," Babich said after his unit allowed a season-high 455 yards during Sunday's 31-24 loss to the Texans. "Anytime you lose a game of this importance … it means something. Once again, as players and coaches, we take this one hard. It's a big game, we didn't play well and that's the bottom line."

Agreed. The front office will have to evaluate if there is another guy who could turn this cast into a strong unit. I doubt anyone really could. We have some huge deficiancies that will be addressed through F/A and the draft. If Smith has been asking for more behind the scenes and the team has shunned him than maybe they feel he deserves another oportunity with more weapons. Who do you think could come in and get the current players to do much better?

Yeah, for everyone who instantly writes off what Glazer reported because Kubiak denied it you have to account for who Glazer is actually talking to. Kubiak is not his source on this but I can almost guarantee you its someone involved in the process. Gary is not going to comment on R. Smith until after the firing has gone through. I'm sure the Texans could change their mind and keep Smith but the idea that I get from this is that whenever Glazer talked to his source the odds were heavily in favor of a changing of the guard defensively.

An article Solomon wrote this morning:

And the Texans' next defensive coordinator will be ...?

Three pretty good prospects hit the job market today, when former head coach Rod Marinelli, Romeo Crennel and Eric Mangini were fired by Detroit, Cleveland and the Jets, respectively.

Just for fun, let's say these are the choices, who ya got?

Marinelli, a longtime defensive line coach with the Buccaneers, would fit the Texans' 4-3 scheme. Crennel and Mangini are 3-4 guys, though Mangini has been known to mix it up quite a bit. Mangini is a smart defensive coach, who will make an excellent coordinator. Love him as a coach, but not sure he would fit here, personality wise, under Kubiak.

The Texans are years (and six good linebackers) away from having 3-4 personnel, so that is not an option either. (Heck, they are a couple linebackers away from having a legitimate 4-3 defense.)

Here are three names you should keep in mind: current defensive line coach Jethro Franklin, Redskins secondary coach Jerry Gray and soon-to-be former Jacksonville defensive coordinator Gregg Williams.

I like Gray for what he would bring to a defensive secondary, which showed signs in the second half of the season that it could be pretty good.

I like Franklin for the continuity it would mean, and his motivational style helped bring some inspired play from players who couldn't get on the field with other teams.

Williams is one of the best in the business. He coaches an aggressive style that the Texans will need to employ next season to be successful. Think that improved Texans defense you saw at the end of this season was nice? Williams would make it better.

There is no shortage of excellent candidates, and other names will surface. This will be the Texans' most important move since they traded for Matt Schaub. This move will either mean the playoffs next year or the firing of Kubiak next offseason.

Yeesh, when you put it that way, and I guess I kinda thought it but never vocalized it to myself, this is a pretty damn important decision. Which makes Williams rather attractive because we wouldn't be gambling on a secondary coach making the leap to DC or something similar. I don't think Kubes can afford to gamble.

Greg Williams, everyones favorite candidate for the job, hasn't even been fired yet. In fact, how many other teams who are heading into next year with their current head coach have fired a coordinator at all? What if the main target is someone currently coaching on a playoff team?

Richard Smith is a dead man walking but there is no reason for the FO to toss him out on his butt the day after the season ends. Once we officially fire him I doubt we jump the gun and hire someone immediately either. I would imagine they have a short list and perhaps even a favorite but we will most likely have several candidates interview and that could sway their decision. Kubiak could have shot down the reports about the defensive coaching staff, heck he gave Ray Rhodes and Alex Gibbs an endorsement and then when they asked about Richard Smith he talked about "evaluations." This guy is gone, call me optimistic for seeing it this way but I'll just call you jaded.

Tick tock . . . tick tock . . . tick tock . . . :foottap:

Whole bunch of people got fired today. Somebody didn't.

Time's running out on Glazer's prediction.

Let's go. Either shit or get off the pot.

Kubiak said at 6 pm on Channel 13 segment he was having player meeting today, tonight he meets with McNair, that is the meeting that will decide it.

If Smith makes it through tomorrow than he is back. Kubiak tone sounds like some changes where going to happen, so lets see what the fall out will be.

Yeah, the odds are as good as Sex Panther, by Odeon, working.

Brian, I'm gonna be honest with you, that smells like pure gasoline.

I do not believe Richard Smith will return as the DC next season. I just don't. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

3:00 pm is when most teams here make their big announcements, that gets them on the afternoon drive talk, and in time for the 6pm news.
