Oklahoma hopes to avoid Big 12 upset

The Sooners have scored at least 58 points in five consecutive games and at least 60 in four in a row. They won a tiebreaker to represent the South Division over Texas and Texas Tech in the Big 12 Championship Game, where a victory would allow them to play for the national title. And they face Missouri, which has lost to two South Division opponents, fell to rival Kansas in the regular-season finale and is a decided underdog against the Sooners.

"There are good offenses in this league," Missouri coach Gary Pinkel said. "But [the Sooners] are playing as good of football as anybody in the nation."

That's why Oklahoma should be concerned.

The championship game is the iceberg that often has sunk the hopes of Big 12 teams that appeared to be cruising to the national title game.

Exhibit A: In the inaugural Big 12 Championship Game, in 1996, No. 3 Nebraska was upset 37-27 by unranked Texas.

Exhibit B: Two years later, No. 2 Kansas State was upset 36-33 in double overtime by No. 10 Texas A&M.

Exhibit C: In 2001, No. 3 Texas was upset 39-37 by Colorado, which it had beaten soundly earlier in the season.

Exhibit D: In 2003, No. 1 Oklahoma was blown out 35-7 by Kansas State. The Sooners still went to the national title game, but an air of invincibility had been removed and OU fell to LSU 21-14.

Oklahoma has a similar air of invincibility. Since losing 45-35 to Texas on Oct. 11, the Sooners have been on a roll in which they've trampled opponents by an average of 28.8 points. The Sooners average 53.3 points to lead the nation in scoring offense and 556.7 yards to rank third in total offense.

Quarterback Sam Bradford has passed for 4,080 yards and leads the nation with 46 touchdown passes. Running back DeMarco Murray has exceeded 1,000 rushing yards, and backup Chris Brown is closing in on that mark. Tight end Jermaine Gresham is the nation's best at his position. Three wide receivers have more than 30 receptions and 500 yards. The offensive line might be the best in the country.

That all adds up to what must be the best offensive unit in the 10-year tenure of OU coach Bob Stoops.

Who gets the edge?

Oklahoma run offense vs. Missouri run defense

BCS be damned. Mizzou be damned. I want them to be blown out. I want Daniel to throw 4 interceptions and Maclin to stay healthy and declare for the draft.

In case you don't know, I do have a pretty strong bias against Missouri.

would love to see a repeat of that Kansas State game in '03. i remember the hype on OU that year being that they were the greatest team ever, and the Big XII championship game was just a small step to the title. best 2-loss team ever!

Yeah screw OU, I can't believe their going to back their way into the championship. Having said that, I don't think Mizzou has a shot in hell at beating them...their defense is putrid.

All I'm realistically hoping for now is that Texas can blow out the team they face in their bowl and somehow be awarded a split championship.......god this "BCS" sucks. You know what BCS stands for right?

I've been saying all along he isn't an nfl caliber QB. You can't be 5'11" in the nfl. You can't have 5 wr's every play and just chuck it up hoping for the best in the nfl. O-V-E-R-R-A-T-E-D.

Now Bradford? That's a different story. He is a great QB, although I will hate him as long as he wears a sooner uni.

So..it's going to come down to who's defense is gonna make the most stops. Florida's offense is potent....OU's offense is potent...whose defense/ST is gonna make the most plays. It should be a good NC game.

On a side note...Bradford's a straight up beast.

add Penn State, Texas Tech & USC to that list as well. I know it's hard to believe but you guys weren't the only ones screwed by the BCS.

They're the only ones with a legit argument (TT has a small one)..........USC lost to freaking Oregon St. and didn't play anybody worth a damn on their schedule. (sorry, but if you don't play anybody I don't have sympathy for you. Thus Penn State falls in this same catagory, they lost to freaking Iowa and they play in the crappy big 10. (You can't afford to lose to crappy unranked teams when you don't play anybody on your schedule.)

Until USC and Penn State actually start scheduling better competition I will not feel sorry for them.

Texas Tech got exposed and annihilated....but still they're the only team with any room to gripe besides Texas, just for the fact that they play in the big 12, but they still got absolutely destroyed on national TV.

Texas lost on the road on the last play of the game......their only loss all season and will watch this week as another team who lost at home to a unranked team passes them by.

What the NCAA needs until they can pull their heads out of their behinds and give us a playoff system, is just a plus 1. I'm willing to compromise...a plus one right now would do. I would rather see the 5th best team in the country get screwed over then the supposed "3rd best team", when nobody really knows who the 3rd best team is. Even a simple "plus 1" would be enough to do away with split national champions.

I'm with you as far as something other than this BCS mess, & it's ludicrous that a very good team can be knocked out of contention b/c of 1 bad half of football or b/c they picked the worst possible time to have an off game & lost late in the season. but having said that... 1 loss is 1 loss. & the only way a team should be ruled out of competing for a NC if they're within striking distance is if said team is blown out by another worthy team (sorry tech) or someone lesser or they have more than 1 loss & there are other worthy teams with less. Other than that, it shouldn't matter when you lose.

I only say that b/c most teams aren't gonna show up & play to their billing every game & any team can fall to a modest opponent if that happens. But whatever they come up with it needs to be more forgiving to teams late in the season b/c sometimes, a loss can galvanize a team & can help them to play better knowing that their backs are against the wall. Florida, USC & OU i think went this way. I think this year we've just seen much more of that than normal this year.

IF we can't get a playoff system...come on at least give us plus one game.

I'm glad OU won. Now, Bradford will face a real defense from the best conference in the land-the SEC. I'm tired of watching all of these soft ass, vanilla creme puff defenses in the Big 12. No wonder QBs like McCoy, Bradford, and Harrell shine like new money. Texas is the only team in the conference that plays a lick of defense. Thank you Will Muschamp (and your SEC coaching pedigree). It's time for OU and Bradford to become Gator Bait!

Or it's time for Florida to see what a big 12 offense looks like.........make no mistake about it, the QBs in the big 12 are for real.

I wish they were smart enough to let Texas play Alabama so they we could finally settle the SEC vs Big 12 argument this season. The top two SEC teams vs the top two Big 12 teams......that would be exciting.

Florida's offense is just as dynamic as OU's. Remember, there best offensive weapon in Harvin didn't play against Bama and they still won by 11. This game is going to be won on the defensive side of the ball and in special teams. Advantage: Gators. Oh...if you've forgot, Florida has this guy named Tebow at QB that OU's defense is going to have its hands full with.

I believe that Texas and Alabama would be a slugfest. But make no mistake about it - Alabama's defense is for real. And they have an NFL offensive line. Saban should have pounded the ball more against the Gators. I think Colt would struggle with the defensive speed of the Tide the same way Bradford will.

Florida hasn't seen an offense remotely as potent as OU or UT's since Ole Miss & you may recall that they lost that game giving up 30+ points. Also, Florida let Alabama's weak offense put 20 pts up on them which tells u all u need to know about Florida's defense. i.e. it's not all that. It should still be interesting nontheless.

I know it's easy to get caught up in the offensive numbers that OU has been putting up lately. But you have to remember that Florida has been doing the same thing offensively against better defensive teams. The one time this year that OU faced a bonafide defense against Texas, they didn't look as potent. Ole Miss was a bad loss by Florida, but I think you're underestimating Ole Miss a little. Houston Nutt is not a good coach, he's a great coach and one of the best gameday coaches in college football. The Rebs have two potential 1st round picks on their defensive line too. And yeah, sure, the previous number one team in the country has a weak offense:rolleyes:. Obviously, their offense was good enough to win 12 games with this season. Glenn Coffee may be the most underrated player in college football and Julio Jones is a phenom. Bama potentially has the #1 pick in the draft at LT in Andre Smith and the best center in college football in Andre Caldwell. They just got beat by a better team yesterday.

My point on the Florida vs OU game is that they both have dynamic offenses that are going to cancel each other out. Florida clearly has the better defense and special teams. Bradford will have a decent day, but I think he will struggle some because the Gators will put pressure on him and pressure isn't something he's use to playing against.

Umm...everyone knew that Alabama's offense wasn't all that & once it became clear they were gonna face a streaking Florida in the SEC champ game, everyone had them pegged to lose not b/c of their defense, but b/c thier offense probably wasn't going to be able to keep up with Florida's which turned out to be true. Them going 12-1 in the SEC has nothing to do with anything.

&.....OU put 35 points up on Texas. They also put 35 on TCU which statistically is better at defense than all of these teams we mentioned thus far. That's more than Florida put on Alabama & the 2nd most pts anyone has put on Texas all year; It's also more than enough to win a game. I'd say that's pretty potent & they can probably score on anyone.

I too thought that Florida's defense was very solid. But after watching bama gash them in the running game, i'm willing to back off of that just a tad bit. They can be had very easily. They wound up having to blitz alot to stop a medicore Alabama offensive team which is not a good thing against teams that run spread offenses & have competent triggermen. The only reason Texas was able to hold them fairly well was b/c they are 1 of the few teams who can pressure the qb with only their front 4 pretty consistently; very rare by today's standards in college football. I don't see Florida being able to do that consistently. The only thing that Florida has Clearly is special teams imo.
