View Full Version : Better Coach...Capers or Kubiak?

Capers' best year with us was 7-9 with a horrible loss with 8-8 on the line.
Kubiak's best year has been 8-8 with a gimmie game in week 17.

IMO, Kubiak has had a lot more talent to work with, but really hasn't produced much more than the ole flytrap did.

Thoughts?

Kubiak for the simple fact that he hasn't laid a complete turd yet like the one Capers did in 05, but I believe he's well on his way.

capers was 18-46 in four seasons..

Kubiak is 17 - 24 partway through his third season as HC..

so far, the numbers tilt in kube's favor.

Hmmm, at this rate two more coaching staffs and we might have ourselves a contender.

YUP, I just posted this in another thread.

Capers: 18-46 for .281 after 4 full seasons.
Kubiak: 17-24 for .414 in less than 3 full seasons.

it'd be cool if Kubiak could end up .713 considering how capers ended up.

The team hasn't quit on Kubiak yet, so right now I'd say Kubes...

I think Kubiak knows what it takes to win, I just don't know if he has the balls to do it...

I fail to see how the last game last season was a gimmie game. Maybe you've forgotten how many of OUR starters were out of the game. There were a ton of them.

That said - it's too early to answer this. Capers has a longer resume. Kubiak hasn't even been a head coach for three seasons yet, and he inherited a total disaster.

omg. That is likw me saying "who is the better QB, David Carr or Matt Schaub?"
Why would you even ask this question, let alone think it?

Kubiak all the way. Dom Capers gave me too many Jack Pardee flashbacks. Another thing is, Kubiak has killer hair. :heh:

I don't know... Kubiak has the offense light years ahead of what it was however Capers had the defense light years ahead of what it is now... reason I say that.. I couldn't imagine how refreshing it would be to have that defense on the field with the offense that we have

Not looking at stats .... I did feel sorry for Aaron Glenn and Walker and crew.. because the offense was so inept and in survival mode that at times it seemed like the defense was on the field for most of the game.. defense we have now can't stop anyone

The 05 defense was terrible ,the worst in football. Richard Smith isnt that bad.

I agree! I used to call Pardee "The Great Spectator". Capers used to have the same look in his eyes. Ha, funny.

Our guys were out no matter what. The Jags still could have ran out their starters and mowed over out backups if they wanted to. It's a gimmie game because the Jags didn't do everything in their power to win. They voluntarily held guys out of the game, our guys were out either way.

Jags basically played their 3rd string qb and Matt Jones led them in recieving. They didn't want anyone with a pulse to get injured before the playoffs.

i would say Capers was a better head coach but they are about tied as far as co-ordinators. Both are good co-ordinators.

from Wiki....

On January 23, 2006, the Miami Dolphins announced the hiring of Dom Capers as the team's defensive coordinator. There, he served as assistant head coach. With an annual salary of $2.6 million, Capers was the highest paid assistant coach in the NFL, alongside Washington Redskins (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Redskins) assistant head coach Gregg Williams (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregg_Williams). On Thursday, January 3, 2008, Dom Capers was fired along with all offensive and defensive coaches. It was said that the new head coach may hire the assistants back.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dom_Capers#cite_note-0)
On January 29, 2008, Capers interviewed with the Dallas Cowboys (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dallas_Cowboys) for the vacant linebackers coach position. It is rumored that he was offered the defensive coordinator or defensive consultant position.[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dom_Capers#cite_note-1)
On February 21, 2008, Dom Capers was hired by the Patriots as their secondary coach/special assistant, replacing Joel Collier (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joel_Collier).

both loyal to a fault, high character good people. Capers should have never been the Texans head coach (Texans got screwed both in Expansion NFL Draft & College Draft, very poor class) DC maybe? in his later years he remains a top notch secondary coach. Kubiak still has time (two years) to prove he can be the ultimate leader/delegator/HC. We all know he is a very good OC & works well with QB's. Maybe he upgrades DC in the offseason, someone who understands personel, then Gary won't have to worry so much about defense & focus his attention on the offense? Wade Phillips would be a nice fit as Texans DC replacing Richard Smith, maybe bring a couple players, current/former to fill these defensive holes we complain about week after week? wonder what his take would be on Jacques Reeves?

I don't know about Wade Phillips as dc, he has been a 3-4 guy all his coaching career and I just don't see us going back there with so much money invested in Mario as a de.

wouldn't he still be a DE in a 3-4? the bigger issue would be our lack of good LBs on our roster. that's why most teams use 3-4 instead of 4-3. when you have more LBs than D-linemen.

Capers had far less talent to deal with and Mike Vick comming out a year early kind of screwed the plan for the draft

Caserly's brilliant/idiotic picks (if they had been somewhat consistent it would have been better) never gave him a chance and the 2005 NFL Draft was awful
1. Carr (bust)
2. AJ (Pro Bowler)
3. Dunta
3.1 Babin (Bust)
4. TJ Bust

Kubes got this from Casserly:

5. Mario (beast)
5.2 DeMeco

That's the direction I was looking in when I started the thread. Capers pretty much sucked here but so did his talent. Kubiak is doing a little bit better but has much more talent on the team.

Didn't Casserly want Reggie Bush back in 2006? I thought for sure CC wanted Bush, which led me to believe Kubiak did that draft all by himself. Am I wrong in thinking that?

That raises some concerns doesn't it? From the perspective of a few years (not necessarily at the time) the talent during the Capers era is judged as bad, as is the coaching. That group peaked at 7-9.

The liklihood is that the current group will be around 7-9 and has peaked at 8-8. Yet somehow this group is considered talented with very good if not great coaching. Something is wrong with one of those evaluations.

As has been discussed before, the defense and quarterback position (turnovers) is holding this team back. The defense must get fixed this off-season for the current group to succeed. Beyond that, the reasons that the head coach and front office allowed the defense to be so bad for three consecutive years must be addressed. The NFL is a fast place league; taking four or five years to fix glaring problems will not get a team ahead of the curve. Taking that long to fix one major problem area (in this case the Texans defense) wastes the effort of the areas performing better (in this case, some aspects of the Texans offense).

The Texans need to do a legitimate root cause analysis and fix core problems. They have had the same or similar problems through two front office/coaching regimes.

The only pic in 2006 that had casserly fingers on it was Owen Daniels. Giving Asserly credit for Mario is cbs speak, in other words total ... BullShit!
